This is a small-time Hertz airport location and it shares a parking lot with all the other rental agencies. With that said, if you're President's Circle or Gold Plus, you DO need to go to the Rental desk first prior to getting in your rental, there isn't a "Black Board" with your information waiting for you. Once you're done with the Rental desk, the shared parking lot is a short walk and you'll be in your rental car in no time. I don't know who controls the inventories, but I was put in literally a brand new Toyota Sienna XLE Minivan with 20 miles on it. it was a great ride, i've never rented a cat and got a brand new car! Returning the rental was a bit odd, they weirdly don't have trash cans at the return area and stated just to keep the trash in the car. bizarre. read more

Priceline made the 4 day reservation and Hertz confirmed with me the pick up time, I arrived on a Monday, the receptionist said "sorry we can't honor the reservation we are over booked, we are only honoring from last Friday and prior" . We were left stranded and had to walk a mile to a Walmart. After an hour I received another email confirming that reservation, I called Priceline and they hung up on me, and I called Hertz customer service to ask why are they still offering ghost cars that don't exist on every single third party site? The customer service at this location was HORRIBLE. We had a delayed flight and missed our connecting flight to ECP. Our options were to wait until the next day or fly to VSP. We choose to fly to VSP. When calling Hertz at ECP, Rob was so nice and understanding. He said he was unable to modify the reservation that late but added a note about the pick up change. When calling VSP to confirm Alexis was incredibly rude and told me I could not change my pick up location and didn't even think they would have a car available for me. My only option was to completely cancel my existing reservation and book a new one. When I did that, a new reservation was going to cost me hundreds more. I ended up booking through Budget which was cheaper then my original reservation with Hertz and they upgraded me to an SUV for free for my hassles that day even though they had nothing to do with it. They came through for me in a stressful situation and all Hertz did was make it more stressful with their poor customer service. Hertz corporate canceled my reservation without notifying me. I booked and paid my reservation through Travelocity. One day before I was scheduled to leave for my wedding, I received an email from Hertz with an invoice double the price I paid to Travelocity. I called Hertz and the rep couldn't explain why I received the invoice. The rep said call Travelocity. Called Travelocity and they didn't understand either nor could they reach a rep at Hertz. Day of my departure I called Travelocity to confirm my reservation. Get to Fort Walton Hertz counter and NO CAR! Called Travelocity and they couldn't book us a car or find one in the area. The rep was able to get an answer as to why the booking was canceled, Hertz didn't agree with the price Travelocity quoted, so Hertz canceled the reservation without any recourse. I rented from Hertz car rental @ 450 Racetrack Road in Fort Walton Beach and was given a car that smelled strongly of cigarette smoke. There was only one agent working at the location and she was friendly, but looked like she had just rolled out of her bed. She got into the car, checked the mileage and fuel level then issued us this Chevy Malibu. Once we got in our car to begin our trip, she walked out of her office to smoke. I do not smoke, have never smoked, and would never allow anyone to smoke in a vehicle I was driving, because of my asthma. I didn't mention the smoke to the agent, which is apparently my mistake. Initially, I didn't realize just how badly the smoke odor permeated everything. I had to stop at a store and purchase Lysol wipes in an attempt to remove the odor from the steering and other hard surfaces-that didn't work, by the way. I returned the vehicle at the end of our trip, and was billed $400 for a cleaning fee for the cigarette odor and ash marks on the interior ceiling-which my son noticed a couple of hours down the road. I contacted the office immediately and was informed they had photos of the markings and the charge would stick. I called corporate office and got the same response. This is an integrity issue. The agent who issued this car KNEW this car reeked of cigarettes. That same agent is sitting back allowing me to be billed for that knowing it is unethical. I guess they needed to have it cleaned, and I was the scape goat they stuck it on. Never ever will I rent from this company again. Many years using Hertz while on active duty with no issues. One rental from this location and I am so disappointed in the dishonesty of this rental agent and the company as a whole. Read other reviews on this location, they resemble this one-go figure! Hertz has an online check in that is basically just a waste of time. I mistakenly thought downloading my drivers license and taking a selfie would speed up the process. Since I had to uber to the airport to pick up my car i only brought my military id and credit card but since im a gold member who has rented many times i thought they could check my drivers license that i just downloaded. They said they cant do that and would not accept the picture of it that I just took. After speaking with Mark Froelich and offering no alternatives I will be spending another $80 in uber fees going back to get my license so they can see the same picture i just showed them. read more

Ugh. Your experience at Hertz, just like any other rental place, will largely depend on the people that work there. The punchline of my experience here is that I will not be using them in the future. Period. Part of the problem was my airline and part of it was the airport itself. The people were nice and professional but other than that, it was a horrendous experience. First of all, I'm a Gold Member and they didn't respect the Gold Member line. Ok. Strike one. On top of that they were super slow. I mean VERY slow. I waited about 20 minutes in (the standard) line and while I waited they apparently ran out of cars. Awesome. I get that there are certain things out of their control, but it gets worse. They were so disorganized. They didn't know their own inventory of cars, no clue. The service agent that was helping me (after waiting for 20 minutes) took ANOTHER 20 MINUTES TO GET ME CHECKED IN. His excuse was that the computer wouldn't let him check me in. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE COMPUTER I JUST WANT MY CAR!! The attendant apparently could not think outside of the computer. Ultimately the computer wouldn't take my Amex discount code. So, it took them 20 minutes to "override" their own "code" which means they just had to do an entirely new reservation. When they finally checking me out the guy asked me for my social security number to use my debit card? WTF?! All the while my wife and kids waited while we were all starving. No apologies either. Ahh but it gets better - they finally got me into a pickup truck - not what I wanted as it meant my luggage would get wet in the rain, but it's all they had so I took it. As we walked out to get into the truck I noticed that they ACTUALLY HAD SEVERAL CARS IN THE LOT THEY DIDN"T KNOW ABOUT. REALLY?!?! One of these cars was a mini-van. Being a gold club member provides no benefits at this airport. There is no canopy service and when you arrive you have to stand in line with everyone else. Additionally, the walk to the lot is a pretty good haul. When I did arrive to my vehicle I found that it had a flat tire and smelled like an ashtray. The interior was also quite stained. After returning back to the terminal I was given another vehicle that was in mint condition. Not the best experience but I'm a pretty loya customer. Hertz Gold does not apply at the office. You have to wait and start your documents from scratch when you get here- this is not the Gold program. They seem to only have an agent and a driver at most times so you have to wait a long time. Phone calls come before people who came into the office. Even though the airport is $7 more and 10 minutes down the road, I recommend using that office if you must use a Hertz rental. read more

Staff did not select any gold members from the separate line until the main line had gone down. Would consistently call forward standard customers even if a gold member was in the gold member line. Car I received was not parked where I was directed to. Took 2 staff members walking around the lot to find it. Turned out to be a completely different model vehicle. When I went to load my bags the interior was dirty, trash, etc. Ended up having to make 3 trips with all my luggage back to the service counter from the lot to straighten it out. Do not rent a car from them!! They over-book their cars and ruin dozens of vacations daily. My experience: We booked a full size car from Hertz months in advance. Locked in a price to even include a toddler seat and was ensured it'd all be ready for us. Had a confirmation number ready when we landed. Walked over to baggage claim and quickly grabbed our belongings. Looked over at the rental car lines and all other companies had zero line except Hertz, which had about 15 disgruntled people waiting. While in the growing line of furious people, we began hearing everyone else's complaints up at the counter. They were out of cars. Hertz had ZERO vehicles of any kind to rent out, but had a line of 15-20 people who ALL made reservations and ALL had confirmation numbers. My wife waited in the Hertz line for an hour to cancel the booked vehicle that didn't exist and make sure we weren't going to get charged, all while I walked next door to National/Alamo and haggled with that employee to grab their last vehicle big enough for my family and coordinate locating a toddler car seat for us. The price ended up being $150 more because it was an SUV and last-minute, but I was very pleased with Alamo. I will NEVER consider Hertz again, and I will tell everyone I know traveling to never consider Hertz. read more

We were greeted at the counter after one of the last flights of the evening at VPS (NW Florida Regional). It was late and the customer ahead of us was pretty irritable and treated the customer service rep somewhat rudely. After they were done, she waited on us and couldn't have been nicer. Glad she didn't let their bad attitudes get to her. Anyways, we rented an SUV. Vehicle had only 3800 miles on it. Vehicle was nice but engine was a little undersized for the size of the vehicle. Really had to step on it to get it moving at a stop light and avoid being run over by the traffic behind us. However, because it was a 4 cylinder, we saved on gas, so that was a good. We noticed that there was like two packages of dried up ketchup squeezed out in one of the rear cup holders. We also found some jelly beans under the seats, but I didn't like the flavor, hence the four stars (haha just kidding) We mentioned this to the clerk upon returning the vehicle and she gave us a $75.00 voucher for the next rental. Not sure when we will travel again or if we will ever use it, but it was a nice gesture anyhow. Pick up and drop off were both super easy and clerks provided great service. read more

I reported problem to customer service the very next morning and was told the local manager would be contacting me to discuss the situation. On Aug 4, they charged my credit card $35. for 4 $1.30 tolls supposedly not paid and the rest was administrative fees! As of Aug 19, neither Hertz or PlatePass have contacted me. If this is how Hertz does business and treats their customers, I will take my hard earned money and business elsewhere! read more

Rented a car at Hertz/Fort Walton airport last week and had a great experience. The car was an Equinox which is exactly what they had told me on the quote. I rented through AAA and was able to add my other 2 drivers at no additional charge. The final charges were exactly as quoted. The car was clean and brand new. The parking lot is right outside the door so quick walk to the car. Would definitely rent here again. read more
