This is the worst Hertz location I've ever been to, and believe me that's saying something because my expectations for Hertz are pretty low. First of all, it's in a garage with no shelter, no tent, no indoor place for customers to stand and no heaters or even a canopy. Repeat, NO HEAT. The employees are basically working in a steel container and they didn't look warm either. The customers can't go inside the steel box because it's tiny, even if we were allowed to go inside. Just egregious corporate greed and disrespect of customers and employees is at work here. Today in 31F wind chill, about 5 people stood waiting for over an hour with the wind whipping through the garage. One lady didn't even have a coat. There was ONE employee to answer phones, deal with customers and he even had to vacuum out the cars himself. I ended up leaving after waiting in the cold for an hour and a half, after another employee and manager came in and allowed new customers to cut the line in front of us. You can tell Hertz does not respect us as customers or their employees. They are making bank, and are still outsourcing phone customer service to the Phillipines so they don't have to pay a decent wage. They can't manage to pay enough employees on site to take the load off ONE GUY. And I cannot stress this enough, the absolute skinflint miserly scroogeness of making an "office" out of a small shipping container and not making a way for customers to be protected from the weather. read more

Avoid at all costs! Disgusting Ghetto Employees This is the most ghetto and unprofessional Hertz in the entire Tri-state area! Avoid this place at all costs! They will allow you to show up for your rental reservation and tell you they don't have it available AFTER you arrive. The location is grossly mismanaged and the area manager, Mike Ruggiero, won't even pick up the phone for his employees when there's a problem. I arrived 15 minutes before my pickup time and no one came out to help several waiting customers for 15 minutes. I knocked on the door and this agent with a nasty attitude reluctantly came out to "help." She informed me they didn't have my vehicle available and she wasn't going to "deal with it" when I questioned her about not being informed prior to arriving. Absolutely the worst car rental experience. They told me the tank was full when I rented the car, it was not. I drove 120 miles and it cost me $22 to fill the tank. I rented the car for one day and they informed me upon pick-up that I would have to return to another location in Jersey City because they are closed on Saturdays. And I was charged an additional $100 after dropping the car off--early for some unknown reason. I incurred no tolls and returned the car early with a full tank. Tank is rarely is ever full. If you call them out, they tell you dont worry its in the computer. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. There are 2 gas stations across the street. Care is also rarely ready on time. THey're always cleaning something or other. Car renting is not a complicated business IMO. I put the reservation in online, you know what time it says I'll be there, just have a damn car ready. They didn't have cars for anyone there - all customers with reservations. One customer stormed into the garage to scream at the employees. My husband rented a car here weeks ago and when he showed up there were no cars for us. He waited four hours for a car, starving because he hadn't eaten all day. We have a young baby so this was a nightmare and threw off our schedule which was intricately planned around her nap time. He kept 4 groups waiting for over an hour and a half each. One group booked on an unsupported website and didn't have a reservation as a result, he quoted them a very high price and said there was nothing cheaper. The woman booked on her phone for $100 cheaper. It was an unnecessary waste of everyone's time and was clear he was trying to cheat the woman. I usually rent cars at this location on Saturdays for the weekend, but recently I rented during the week and it was a total nightware. As a matter of fact one of the times I couldnt even get the car because the 'manager' was running my credit card on a faulty card reader and insisting the card was being declined. In addition to that he was rude, unprofessional and a disgrace to work with. The second time I rented during the week, I asked to have my card read at a "working" terminal to avoid the same situation, and he "sent me" to an even ruder lady to process my rental that thought i was "in her face" and filming her with my phone while I was tending to a facetime call From rude to ruder.... I want to note, however that the employees that work on Saturdays are a pleasure to deal with, helpful and corteous and I have never had a problem renting from them. When I showed up, Hertz said booking.com doesn't ever send them the rental information, and they did not have my car, or any car for me. Several other people in line had the same issue. The person at the rental counter said this has been going on for MONTHS and yet Hertz has done nothing to stop it. As Hertz had no cars, I had to re-book for a car at Newark airport. I have nothing bad to say about this location. Sometimes Hertz can be on the pricier side for rentals compared to competitors in the area. But, with my Optimum discount and being a gold member they have been very competitive. The fact that they are 2 blocks away helps too. Every time I have been here the service has been prompt and friendly, I have only dealt with one girl and one gentleman there, both have been great. I accidentally left my house keys in the car overnight. I went back first thing the next morning and they stopped what they were doing, opened the car up and let me get my keys. For a basic rental these are pretty much my go-to. I don't dabble in the hourly stuff because I usually need a car for the entire day which is more cost effective to rent for the whole day. The fact that they are next to a gas station is nice so you can fill up before you drop off without having to hunt for a station. read more

This place is a fcking scam. Yes I said the F word. Let me justify my statement. First of all, I picked up a cargo van on a Saturday morning before 10:00 am. There already were 5 or 6 ppl in front of me waiting for their cars. And they were told no cars available. One guy saw me picking up a cargo van, he came up and told the lady "if there were some cars available, I am the first one, my family is waiting outside. We are going to the beach". The lady replied " sir, there is no car, you don't have to say this to me. I do not need to know this. You will get your car when there is a car available". So rude. And when that poor guy returned to his seat speechless, she was mumbling " why r you yelling at me, this is out of my control". That is a yelling to her? That is barley a complaint. OK, now it is the scam part. The lady told me the tank is 3/8 full and I only need to come back with that level of tank when she handed over the key. But when I checked my credit card after I returned the car with half full tank, I was billed $196.04 for fuel. So I called them at least 20 times the day after in the morning, finally got someone on the phone, after 10 mins, he told me it was a mistake, he started the refund, I should receive the refund within 3 business day. I was pissed off when i called 20 mins straight yet no one picked up that god damn phone. But I thought anyway, I got my money back. However one week later, I still have not seen a dime. So I called this morning, without surprise, no one picked up the phone at first, but after I called 5 times straight, some one picked the call while not responding. Smart, that way I could not call them any more. That is how fcked up this place is. So I went to the store, I explained to the guy at the counter, the same dude who picked up the phone to prevent me calling, calmly, cause I just want to get my money back, he told me that since I called some one last week, he is not able to do anything, I have to wait for an hour til the manager arrives. OK, I could do that, even though I know it is total BS. Some guy came in 30 mins later, I explained the same shit to him. He wrote down the trip number, saying he would put in the system, I asked for a receipt, he said there is no receipt, I could find on hertz website after put in my driver license. I said how would I know you start the refund, he said you would know when you see it on your credit card. It usually takes 7 days. 7 days now, not 3 business days anymore? Something at work came up at me, so I left. Pretty sure I would need to go back next week to confront those crotches. read more

I wanted to return a car on Saturday afternoon and because they close at 1:00 pm I had to park the car somewhere overnight (they close their lot so there is no key drop off). The car I had didn't have any wiper fluid and when I mentioned that when I returned it, they didn't note it so the next person isn't going to have wiper fluid either. First I must admit that I thought it was an old location that went out of business due to the faded signs and crummy outdoor look. That is all the bad things I have to say about this Hertz service. The people that work here are the reason why I became a Hertz Gold Member. The service is impecable and the professionalism and work ethic unbelievable. They don´t bother you trying to upsell you with crap nobody needs, they always offer you an upgrade if available and to make matters even better, their prices are the best in town. I once rented from a different company that I will not mention ( I will only say that it starts with A and ends in VIS) and it was the worst car rental experience of my life. Working with these guys sucks because I was trying to make a case to my wife about buying a car but they are not helping me by always giving me a great deal and making things so easy. I am indeed a fan. I found the staff to be very professional, and ironically opposite to many of these reviews, there were plenty of cars and many customers. Instead of standing in a long line, we had the pleasure of sitting and watch repeatedly that each customer was carefully taken care of... The manager even made my Hertz reservation for me when I called to inquire if they had vehicles for a one way to JFL a few days earlier, and when I asked for the gas to be added at the last minute, he made the change with smile. I particularly like a reasonably priced gas station is directly across the street from this particular Hertz location. I would recommend this Hertz car rental agency. read more

Surprisingly quick, easy, and painless. Rented a car for a 1 week vacation up to Maine and back. Total cost was $288 and got a sweet 2013 ford focus with over 40+mpg. Was really expecting a horrible experience but I simply showed up at my reservation time, got the keys and was off. Drop off was just as easy, just dropped the keys off and that was it. DO NOT GO TO THIS LOCATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I signed up for Yelp specifically because this was so horrible I had to leave a review and warn others. NOTE: this was the comment I tried to submit to the Hetz customer service website. Ironically, just as I hit submit, the site encountered an error. Fortunately, I had already copied my comment to post to Yelp. This was completely unacceptable. I made my reservation online and paid with a debit card, and was charged over $100. When I arrived to pick up my rental, I was informed that for the security deposit, I had to provide a credit card, not a debit card. Having just cancelled my credit card, I could not do this. They also said they could not refund the over $100 I had already paid. AT NO TIME on the website was I warned or informed that the method of payment I was using would not be accepted at this location. I am EXTREMELY dissatisfied with the service. Just the fact that I could not rent the car is frustrating enough: but the fact that they would not refund what I had already paid is entirely unacceptable. To be clear: I had the money and the desire to purchase this service, and I was denied service and actually CHARGED for the privilege of being inconvenienced. Rented the car over the weekend, returned it overnight with a full tank of gas (took a photo as proof).. Hertz sends me a bill charging me for almost an entire tank! I call Hertz Hoboken, and speak to the manager. He says it was Hertz Central who made this charge (on what basis, not clear) and promises to have the claim submitted and refunded within a day - and get back to me with a confirmation. Three days pass - it's radio silence from Hertz. I call again - he now says that it will take up to 12 business days for them to refund me the money.. Not good.. read more

This was the first time i ever had to deal with this company, and after this incident, it's my last. I called to be picked up from my mechanic before I even got to the shop so i can save time, and they said they will be there in 20 minues. I go to my mechanic, dropped off my car waited another 20 minutes, called again, they transfered me back and forth to 3 diffrent location!! finally i got someone on the line saying " oh yea, sorry, we forgot to send someone, they will be there in 20 minutes." I waited another 20- 30 minutes, THEY NEVER SHOWED UP!!!! never showed up. My mechanic had to call a diffrent company because he was closing up, so he stayed an extra hour waiting with me after closing so he can get someone to pick me up. Horrible customer service!!! Patricia had the WORST attitude. She needs to work on her customer service skills. Hertz as a company should really update their system. My visa/debit card can be used either way. EVERYWHERE I have gone shopping the option of using your bank card as either debit or credit card. Get a new system!! How can you make a prepaid reservation online have with a debit/ credit card and then when you go to check in your denied your reservation. Best part is when they told me to go to another rental company that takes debit/credit card. Unbelievable!!! Terrible service. Hertz called me the morning of my reservation to tell me that the car I ordered would not have a GPS; if I needed one I would have to drive to another location. I was also running a little bit late but was still going to get the car. They (the woman I spoke to claimed to be the "Manager" perhaps she was but she isn't a problem solver) then proceeded to tell me that if I didn't get the car within two hours that my reservation would be cancelled. I made the reservation well in advance of the date so this issue should have not happened. Customer Service is the number one reason people have loyalty to a company. Most people will pay a little more for better service. I called Enterprise shortly after. The person that made my reservation was pleasant, efficient and well mannered. They are located on River St. Do yourself a favor avoid Hertz. read more
