Hertz is not a place to go for a rental car!! I ordered the Tesla with prepay, a few weeks in advance for my travel. When I go to Jersey City to pick up the car, the agent said there are no Tesla cars available at all! The options are: 1. take the downgraded car 2. Give up the space and let others take the cars. I asked, "Why did I order the car with prepay fee and no car for me to pick up?" The answer was, "That was done by the system, we have no control here, we can only give whatever cars are available." That's the Hertz deals with the customer, either their system is obsoleted, or their business process is to take the money from the customer first, when customers show up, they have no choice but to take whatever car Hertz gives to them. Avoid this location at all cost. We should have listened to all the bad reviews. We reserved a full size car but none was available. After a 45-minute wait, we were upgraded to a small crossover vehicle, really a compact car and is raised up slightly. We couldn't get all our luggage behind the rear seat so we had to put our extra piece of luggage on the rear seat. It was good that we only had 3 people in the car. This was the worst car rental experience. Those guys at the counter seemed really nice, until I realized that they lied. I rented a car from Saturday to Sunday. Turns out that they are closed on Sunday. The "nice" guy said that it was ok, because I had reserved it online. I should park it in the garage and leave the keys. Which I did. Turns out that is not the case, I was charged the extra day. Rude guy at Hertz 800# transferred me to the actual rental location, was told they would credit me. Still waiting for it to happen. My situation as it stands is this, I rented a car for 1 day and was charged for a week long rental due to a processing mistake at the location. The Hertz corporation claims they contacted the location to verify the invoice, but the manager assures me in person, that he has not been contacted by anyone! I was charged: $751.82 I was supposed to pay: $119.79 A refund is due: $632.03 I have a photo of the return parking stub and the location manager himself tried to issue me a refund. This is THE WORSE Hertz operations that I ever seen in my 25 years as a Hertz customer. The staff was bad and the cars were even worse! This location is a small room / box in a garage. When I was there, they had 3 persons working the windows (the customers were outside) but they must had 5 other people behind them in the room doing the "water-cooler" conversations. Well, more did not mean better! They gave me a car with only 3/8 of tank of gas and had low tire pressure light on. I went back and told them about the low tire pressure light They tried to convince me that it was the warning light that was broken after they pumped air into the tires. Be honest, I was pissed that they disregarded my safety because they didn't want to switch the car with mechanic issue out! I insisted that they give me another car - and they down-graded me to a smaller car than my reservation - and charged me the original price! I was in a rush so I took the smallest car that I'd ever driven. Then the garage attendant won't let me out - because the Hertz staff forgot to put a "sticker" on the ticket that Hertz gave me along with my rental agreement. It was another Hertz mistake. My conclusion about this place was total failure of management that resulted in cars that were not meeting the safety / cleaning standards, staff had no regarding their customer's safety, the staff was lazy / taking the short cut, and made mistakes in some of the simplest things. Long overdue review. I have been using this hertz frequently for the past year and a half. The service has always been great. The staff is very helpful in helping you choose the right vehicle and they go out of their way to help. What made me finally sit down and write a review was an incident today. I dropped off my rental but left my cell phone in the car. I was already at home a couple miles away when I realized it. I called Hertz and they located my phone. The manager offered to drop it off at my home and I had it back in my possession within the hour. The location can be a bit tough to find(it's inside the parking garage of the building that houses 5 Guys Burger), but that's the only downside. I highly recommend this Hertz. read more

Had a worst customer experience among all Hertz locations I used. Managers intimidating attitude. The operations are very slow and usually you need to wait in the line for very long time to get a car. Car is usually not cleaned well or gas is not adequately filled. Overdue review. I have been using this Hertz location for about a year now and I have always been satisfied. The people that work here are always so polite and helpful. During one rental, I had an issue and left them a message. My call was returned in record time and issue was resolved. This place also seems to have fair rates. I grew up in Cape May County, NJ and moved to Hudson County in 2010. In 2013 I finally parted ways with my car, so I've been relying on rentals ever since then to get me back home a few times a year to see my family. I almost always have a positive experience with this Hertz. I always book in advance online, and I always go for the low-end cars (looking for maximum fuel efficiency since I usually log several hundred miles over the course of the weekend). I always get the kind of car I chose in advance (a couple times I got free upgrades), but I've also never sprung for anything above a C-Car. The two negative experiences I can recall have each only happened one time - on a Saturday morning (it might have been a holiday weekend, I don't remember) I went to pick up a car right before noon (which is when they close on Saturdays) but they were out of cars - we had to wait for someone to return their rental, which took almost an hour. But the manager did stay with us the whole time to make sure we got our rental, he was very nice. The other time I was disappointed by the service at this location was when the person at the service window tried to force me to buy insurance. I was really insulted by the way they went about this - I haven't had so much as a speeding ticket, let alone a car accident, in over ten years, and certainly have never returned a rental car with any damage issues. The agent's pitch for trying to sell me the insurance was to imply very strongly that it's really like I'll be involved in an accident, it just came off as insulting. But that has only ever happened that one time and never again. Overall I have no qualms about using this Hertz as my main location for booking rentals cars. read more

We decided to rent a car on a Monday after Christmas to go to the mall - it was only $41 so it seemed like a good idea. We didn't realize you have to call ahead if you need a ride to their garage, so we sat there waiting at our home and no one showed. Once we called, someone arrived to pick us up within 15 minutes. Now we know! Checking in was simple enough. However, the car was not in the spot we were told it was in. We spent about 20 minutes searching each floor for the car, and then found it only a few spots away from where we started on the first floor! I believe we were upgraded to an SUV which was great. The EZ Pass is weird - you have to slide it out of it's cartridge, which we didn't realize until AFTER we drove through the EZ Pass lane and it said it didn't work! Now we know! Overall, it's a great deal and much cheaper than renting a Zip car for the same amount of time. HOWEVER, they are only open for 4 hours on Saturday, and closed on Sunday, so you can't really rent a car on the weekends which SUCKS! What is the point of running a rental car business? If they were open on weekends, we'd probably rent a car from them once or twice a month. For now, we'll only use this location sparingly. Hey Hertz, in case you didn't know, the population of JC is growing rapidly. You'd probably make a lot more money if you were opened on weekends. Just saying. read more

On Friday, March 10th 2017, a new god was born, and his name was Manny. My girlfriend and I arrived 15 minutes late to pick up our vehicle, which was scheduled to be picked up at 6:00 PM Friday evening. This particular Jersey City location CLOSES at 6:00 PM (so I'm really not sure why they would allow us to set a pickup time right when the business closes...) Nevertheless, though the shades were drawn low and all signs marked "closed," lights still appeared to be on inside when we arrived. We desperately knocked on the window to see if there was anybody who could help us. Enveloped in a pulsating golden aura, a superhero, who only humbly introduced himself as "Manny", emerged from behind the office door. He asked us what we needed. We explained our situation: we had just traveled for over an hour by multiple trains to arrive at this Hertz car pickup location and would be stranded for the night without a ride. The indomitable Manny apologized that the computer system was shut down for the evening and explained that there was nothing he could do. However, as we continued to plea, Manny, in his infinite wealth of compassion, admitted that he was also a superstar employee who stayed late on Friday night to do paperwork. He said he'd be around a little while longer and offered to attempt to turn the computers back on and to call us if the system successfully rebooted before he went home for the night. We parted ways and began contriving alternative plans, should Manny let us down. How naive and feeble-minded we were to think that Manny the badass new god would ever let us down, for not 10 minutes later my phone rang. It was Manny preaching the good news. The computers were up; our car was ready; a new god was born. Manny saved our weekend. Mediocre service - I once got a car on Empty, and the guy said,"just return it at the same level" ...thanks for the tip buddy! I let it go and didn't post anything. This time the guy at the front desk was a lot nicer. We got a van for a weekend getaway for four adults and two babies. Van didn't have air conditioning. Worst customer service I have ever experienced. After booking a reservation Monday for a Friday, getting two confirmation emails, AND having my credit card charged, Hertz never showed to pick me up at the specified time, which was 6pm. Upon calling corporate, we were told that since that Hertz location closed at 6pm, we should not have made the reservation for them, and that it was OUR fault. THEN WHY DID THE SYSTEM LET US BOOK IT? We assumed we'd be the last reservation, since it should take less than 15 minutes to rent a car with a reservation. One would also think, that someone at Hertz would be monitoring the reservations and see that one was made, confirmed, and charged for one at a time they could in fact not honor, and then maybe call to set up a different time. Nope. BOTTOM LINE: never assume your reservation will be honored. Hertz Corporation went on record stating they could not help us, and that all Hertz location managers had complete control whether to honor reservations or not. They took no ownership over their mistake, acknowledged this happens often, and admitted they will do nothing to help. Reserving a car with them is like playing Russian roulette with your plans. Shocked and appalled, this jeopardized one of their corporate partnerships with a Fortune 500 company, to which they said they still refused to do anything. read more

Extremely disappointed with the service I received from this location. I had to return two cars in the same day due to upkeep and mechanical issues. One Hertz associate was pathetically rude, dismissive and ignorant to the norms of customer service. This associates (or manager) knows who he is - customers deserve better. I wasted my morning and missed critical time sensitive meetings. Corporate should seriously investigate and review the persistent customer complaints regarding this location, management and staff. I rented from Hertz in the Newport Mall. I was running behind due to work and got to the mall right as this Hertz location was closing. I got VERY lost trying to find the office. When I called the desk to let them know, Dana picked up the phone and said she would wait for me. She waited 15 minutes after the location had closed. I cannot tell you how grateful I was. She was so lovely and funny and wonderful. She could not have been more understanding. I received exceptional customer service and Dana went above and beyond to make sure I was accommodated. I have found that Hertz can be hit or miss depending which employees are present at the time that you pick up and drop off your car...This might explain the negative reviews here. However, I had an excellent experience. Upon returning the car I noticed a charge on the bill that I had not anticipated, due to a misunderstanding on my part. Once your card is charged they cannot reverse the charges, but the manager did give me a voucher with a credit to use on my next rental. Not bad. A word of advice: CHECK YOUR RECEIPT BEFORE LEAVING WITH YOUR CAR. They don't charge you til you return, and disputes can be settled in the beginning with little hassle. read more

We rented a car from this location Memorial Day weekend, my booking was for 9am, but we decided to pick up our car as soon as the location opened so we could hit the road (I called in the day before to make sure that was ok). I got there a few minutes before 8am, when they open, and there was a large line of folks looking to pick up their rentals. It didn't seem that the store was sufficiently staffed to service everyone in a timely manner, I had to wait about 40 minutes to get the car. The customer service was good, the car did the trick for our trip, and the they honored a corporate discount. Overall we were happy with our rental. I am surprised to see the negative feedback's on Yelp. We are in desperate need of well run car rental companies downtown Jersey City - hopefully Hertz makes good with their dissatisfied customers. read more

I booked through Priceline and had purchased the Priceline insurance, which I was told was less than adequate by the Hertz representative. He then told me that I would be reimbursed by Priceline if I purchased the Hertz insurance. He claimed people did it all the time. Priceline is not reimbursing me, though. He also said someone would be at the desk until midnight on Saturday; when I returned my car, I had a question, but no one was at the counter; so I had to return to the car to lock the paperwork inside, and come back downstairs to leave. Their phone number doesn't work--it either continues to ring, or I get a busy signal--and there's no opportunity to leave a message. I would not recommend this Hertz, which is unfortunate, as they usually have cars available and are inexpensive compared to Manhattan. read more

The worst car rental place ever. I am part of Hertz President's club and this is the last thing I am expecting when I have been renting form hertz for five years for months in a row at times. I returned the car over a weekend and they did not bill me until the next week with the additional 7 days included cause they did not close it out and said I had the car with me! I had to argue to get it fixed. Then I had to wait another 10 days for my receipts even after calling them literally 20 times Nick is the guy I was talking to who if I had the option would fire him today. The guy is rude, disrespectful and thinks is doing me a favor. Every time I'd call he would put me on hold and then forget about it or disconnect. That is being a jerk. My neighbor a sweet 50 yrs old lady used to rent from them until she encountered a similar situation and how rude these guys are. To her bad luck she spoke to Mr. Nick as well! She has now moved to Avis and much happy with the rental location in the mall. I am going to do the same. We are done hertz. Not because I have a problem with you but I have a problem with the people who work for you in this location. The staff, Brandon and Tamika are excellent, attentive, helpful and friendly. Their customer service is second to none. The cars are always clean, new, and exactly what I need. INCOMPETENCE and POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. I will never rent from them or any other Hertz again. I reserved a car three weeks before the reservation date. I then called four separate times prior to the reservation date to confirm that I needed a large SUV with extended cab. I specifically requested a Suburban, a Yukon XL or a Escalade XL. Told them I definitely needed it for a ski trip for 7 people with a lot of luggage. I also, called the night before and confirmed. They assured me that the vehicle I reserved would be there. Of course, when I arrived promptly at the pickup time at 9:30 AM, the morning of the trip to pick up the reserved vehicle, they switched the vehicle for another vehicle a Yukon (without the extended cab. So while you had room for seven, there was no room for luggage. I told them this was a problem; they acknowledged that I had specifically reserved the bigger vehicle; they acknowledged my multiple calls to confirmed. Yet, they just shrugged and said that this was what they had. They told me if I wanted the car I reserved with them, I would have to drive the car they gave me to Newark airport and make "an easy quick exchange. The manager (Asian or Latino guy with glasses said he would call over to Newark. I did just that drove 20 minutes over to the Hertz at Newark. They had not received a call from the Jersey City Hertz, did not have any available cars, and simply stated I was out of luck. Finally, after 2 hours, one of the kind service folks at Hertz (Newark Airport) pulled up my reservation, notice that I had reserved the bigger vehicle and got me the right car (for an additional $120.00). They Newark agent called Jersey City, he admitted the error and apologized to her. My trip was delayed 5 hours by this debacle and I had to pay late fees at my destination because of the incompetence and dishonestly of the Jersey City - Green Street Hertz crew. They manager should be fired or reprimanded. THIS WAS THE WORST SERVICE EVER. DO NOT RENT HERE. read more

I called to be picked up from my mechanic before I even got to the shop so i can save time, and they said they will be there in 20 minues. I go to my mechanic, dropped off my car waited another 20 minutes, called again, they transfered me back and forth to 3 diffrent location!! finally i got someone on the line saying " oh yea, sorry, we forgot to send someone, they will be there in 20 minutes." I waited another 20- 30 minutes, THEY NEVER SHOWED UP!!!! never showed up. My mechanic had to call a diffrent company because he was closing up, so he stayed an extra hour waiting with me after closing so he can get someone to pick me up. This is my third time renting a vehicle from Hertz and the last. The other two times stemming from 2011 and again on 2012 experiences was positive hence why I rented from this particular location the third time. This third rental will be my last as those commissioned to work behind the counter, lack communication as it pertains to communicating with the customer and the insurance provider. In short, I rented a car as a result of an accident in which the other driver was at fault. The other driver insurance provider communicated verbally and non verbally that since their client was @fault, the rental charges accrued for the duration of the rental with the exclusion of the deposit would be paid in full by the @ fault driver's insurance company. However, since those employed at this location do not know how to communicate to the insurance provider on the amount that is owed in full to Hertz they instead placed an hold onto my account thus making it impossible for me to have access to the funds I worked for. So, note to those considering this place, if you're renting as a result of an accident occurring, please please please constantly call those people, to in fact determine if they as in Hertz are billing the insurance carrier and not directly billing you instead. Because they do not perform their due diligence by proactively contacting the insurance provider and/or sending them the bill directly, they will in turn place a hold for several of hundreds of dollars onto your account as a remedy. And if you use a debit card as myself, that is surely an inconvenience, because you are unable to have access to the money you're entitled to which is the money you've earned. So please make sure you contact them, because they do not contact you to tell you that said insurance did not authorize payment or provide access to direct billing as they term it. Per my case, said insurance did authorize payment however because the "actual" amount was not articulated, Hertz will place a hold onto your account, until they receive the amount from the insurance provider. One would think receiving authorization operative word authorization agreeing to pay would suffice but nope, they will place a hold on your account until payment is received. This has been one of the worst experiences I've ever endured with a rental company. I could see if the insurance provider was disputing the rental, but nope, they are agreeing to it. New staff at this location needs client service training! I spend several thousand dollars per summer at this location and previous hertz employees made the effort to remember and service regular clients. Current team is awful. Charged at late fee even though I returned car a day early? then put me on hold for extended time before dealing with issue. Makes me want to use up my points and move on to National across the street. read more

I had a great experience and even got a free upgrade. Easy to follow instructions for picking up and dropping of the car. Unfortunate that some others didn't have the same experience. Wouldn't hesitate to rent there again. read more
