When there is so much competition in the car rentals industry, I think hefts better offer that extra service. I walked in, and was charged a lot more than online. They don't care if u take or bring the car back, you will be charged for the whole day. You can choose them to gas the car. But you will need to pay $$$$ for it. Car is very clean. I mean very. And they will leave a brush in case it will be snowing. You will appreciate it when you enter the car after snow. Overall they are OK. I have no clue how they manage to stay in business if they constantly claim they have no cars for their customers. I had to come here recently to pick up a friend who was completely abandoned by Hertz, even though she had a perfectly valid reservation. When we tried to get it sorted out, the guy working, "John," was shockingly dismissive and completely rude. I arrived at Hertz office -- which required a $15 Uber ride to get to from the Amtrak station -- only to find out that they cancelled my reservation without letting me know in advance of arriving at their office. Do NOT rent from this Hertz location. Juan is verbally abusive to customers and is extremely unprofessional. I lost my driver's license traveling to RI, and since I had rented a car for the trip back home, I called them to see what documents I would need in order to pick up my rental. The website said as long as I had my temporary license as well as all the necessary documents (government formal ID, bank/utility statements, credit card, etc.), that it was acceptable. I was told I couldn't pick up my rental because they do not accept temporary licenses, which is the total opposite of what the website says, so I asked nicely if I could inquire with the manager about it, and she gave me Juan's number to call. I called, said hi and stated my name, and before I said anything else, he said "f@!? you!" and hung up on me. They did absolutely nothing to help me resolve my issue, nor did they even cancel my reservation if they could not help me. I called Hertz customer service and they reiterated that I should have had no issue renting a car with a temporary license and all the required documents. I have rented numerous cars in past and I have always sat in the drivers seat, door wide open, legs outside of car to smoke my cigarette. This rental agency is trying to charge me $400 for doing as such. I've never heard such a thing. There weren't even any no smoking signs, and when I was handed the car was said, and I quote "All we ask is you don't smoke or vape in the car", as the associate was running out the door to leave by 5pm. I will never use Hertz or any of their affiliated rental companies (Dollar, Thrifty, Firefly) ever again. The company canceled my reservation and did not notify me. I found out when I attempted to confirm my reservation on the website the night before. I prepaid for the vehicle and the charges were still on my account when I attempted to confirm. I called the customer service number and was notified that my reservation was canceled by the location due to no vehicles being available. I was told I would be refunded in 7-10 business days. When I expressed that I needed a vehicle for the date of my previous reservation, they offered to make a new reservation at another location but the rate would be more than what I previously paid. I was expected to pay the full amount even though my previous payment (which was canceled without my consent or knowledge) was still not refunded to my account. When I asked if my previous payment could be applied to the new reservation, I was told that their rates change all the time and I would need to pay the full amount. I asked to make a complaint and was told to write an email. I asked to make a verbal complaint and was told the supervisor would give me the same information. I asked again and was put on hold for more than 15 minutes. Never again! read more

CAUTION: Returned my car on time, got an email the next day with the final receipt which included a $12 late fee. Called to say I returned the car on time and was immediately told they had updated it in the system and I would receive a new receipt--didn't even ask me to prove I had returned the car on time. (This was after I spent 10 min on the phone trying to figure out how to talk to an actual human and go two annoyed I almost gave up.) My only conclusion is that it's a giant scam where they lie and try to steal from you by just giving you a late fee and assuming you won't call or will get too frustrated and give up. CAUTION: They "upgraded" my car from a smaller model to a larger model but only because that was the only car they had. I asked for the smaller car I had booked and they said they literally didn't have anything other than the large SUV I got instead--which is just great given the price of gas! :( At least one of the other reviews for this place mentions that they literally had no cars even though someone had a reservation and they were just SOL. I booked a car and received a confirmation to pick up at this location. When I went there, it was raining hard, the attendant promptly said he had no vehicles and offered to simply do nothing. Mixed feelings about this one, but we're going to give them the benefit of the doubt until I'm proven wrong. Reserved a rental car here as it was way cheaper than renting from Providence Airport. Took the train in from Boston and arranged for them to pick me up for the train station. A little tough to negotiate but they were indeed there to grab me. Got a really nice car even though I only reserved an Economy. I believe it's a Standard size car with GPS included. Pretty sweet. The trepidation? They added "prepaid fuel" to my bill and told me they'd take it off when I return the car if I have it full. I rent a lot of cars and haven't seen this one. I'm no dummy, so I won't be paying that either way, but I imagine they do this because people often forget and then they just get the extra money. I truly wish I read reviews about this Hertz located at 400 Silver Spring Street in Prov. I would have NEVER rented from them! I booked my reservation online May 4th, eleven days before I needed the car, and paid $48. 87. When I went in on May 15th and gave them my credit card with which I paid for the reservation, they were "unable to process it." They said they would have to charge me again, and that I could call the 800 Hertz number for the refund. I reluctantly agreed because I needed the large vehicle to move my daughter out of college that day. Due to Covid, we had a specific day and time for the move. When I agreed, the EXACT same rental was suddenly $59. 60. I asked why the didn't honor the online price, and they said it was because it was a same day rental. ARE YOU KIDDING??? I calmly explained that the rental was made 11 days prior, to which I received blank stares. I have since been battling my credit card company to refund me the higher, second overcharge, but they said they couldn't because this location is an independent franchise. I was credited the original $48.87 by the credit card company, but should have been credited the $59.60 overpayment. I believe this Hertz location did this BY DESIGN-SHADY!!!! Booked a vehicle 2-3 weeks ago. They call me on the morning of pickup to tell me that they did not have the vehicle I reserved. They then tried to swap out an SUV for a mini-van. Why make advanced reservations if they aren't going to have what you reserved available. When I told them this was unacceptable, I got attitude. Now I scramble to get a vehicle as I am hours away from leaving ony trip. This is not the first time Hertz has done this. I thought being a Gold Member meant something but it appears not. If they treat Gold Members this way, I shudder to think of how they treat guests making reservations. I believe i am going to attempt to establish a relationship with another car rental company. I booked my car for work last minute on my Concur and it shows that this Hertz is located at the Providence Amtrak station, turns out it's not. But whatever, it's my fault for not checking. I came here to return the vehicle. The drop off was quick and easy. I picked up the car in New Haven at 11:30a and dropped it off here at 2:15p, but the guy here didn't charge me for two days so that's very nice of him. They do offer pick up and drop off service to the Amtrak station. You do have to allow yourself extra time because there are only two people working there and they can't just leave the office empty. I waited for about 15 mins for the other Hertz guy to come back and take me to the train station. read more

HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! HORRIBLE! DO NOT RENT FROM HERE! Please. Let me tell you why. The past two times I booked a rental through Hertz, they weren't the absolute best experiences, but their location on Silver Spring Ave. is close to my house and the rental rates are quite reasonable. I was in need of a rental car from 12/23 evening through 12/26 evening. I booked my reservation online and selected the "pick up service" option. As instructed by the online booking as well as previous conversations with employees at Hertz, I wrote in the comments section what time and where I needed to be picked up. Not hard, right? Well... let me tell you something. If it comes to reading and/or customer service, it must be very hard for the employees of this Hertz Local Edition to do. I wanted to be picked up 12/23 at 5 p.m. at my home. 5 p.m. comes and goes. I call and speak with Juan, the manager, to confirm my reservation and tell him I'm waiting to be picked up. What does Juan tell me? Juan tells me that his driver leaves at 5 p.m. every night. I know for a fact that they see all of the online reservations that are made, as soon as they're made, so WHY oh WHY didn't someone call and/or email me to tell me that their driver leaves at 5 p.m. each night so that I could've made other arrangements. So now, here I sit with no rental car. So instead of Juan offering to drop off a rental car tomorrow morning or afternoon when I get out of work, I'm told I can leave my own car overnight and then come and pick it up tomorrow. You know something? It's impossible for a person to drive two cars at once, so I'm not exactly sure HOW I would pick up my own car tomorrow, considering it's Christmas and everyone I know is busy and/or out of town. If I could give this lower than a 1 star I would. 1. Bad reservation system 2. Reservation policies are terrible 3. Bad customer service I made reservations on April 9 2014 for a rental in May 2014. My flight was due to come in a little past 11AM. All the flight information was entered into their Hertz Rental system. Paid with a credit card and got a confirmation number. Two days before my flight, I call the airline to confirm flight... check..everything OK Contact hotel to confirm...check..everything OK. I call Hertz to confirm rental and there is where the PROBLEM began. Hertz said that their office location closes at 12 noon on Saturday. I advised them that when I made the reservation, there was no indication that the location would be closed, I also advised that they needed my flight information when i made the reservation, and that I should have been advised about your location hours. The agent then stated that I needed to call the main reservation number and talk to someone there about this. I called the main reservation number and talked with an agent: 1. She then stated "I'm sorry for the inconvenience" asked me when I made the reservation and advised her that it was made 30 days in advance. On hold again... 2. She then came back on the line and said "I'm sorry for the inconvenience" there will be a $50 cancellation fee. I asked her "why do you need flight information on the reservation on the reservation? If not one person, not even your system can check and make sure your locations are open when people make reservations after they have your flight??. No answer and put on hold again 3. She came back on the phone and said "I'm sorry for the inconvenience" but you will be charged $50 and I have cancelled your reservation, thank you for calling Hertz..click So my credit card was chard $50 dollars for a screwed up reservation and inconsiderate customer service. I WILL NEVER USE HERTZ IN THE FUTURE. This was not an "inconvenience" it was a MAJOR PROBLEM. read more

Worst Experience Ever. Not just this location in particular. The TF Green location, the call center, everything. INFURIATING. We had to rent a car because someone hit my husband and their insurance was going to pay for the rental. We picked up our car at the TF Green location. Immediately found an old toothbrush in the door. A couple of days later, we noticed the registration was expired...... Bad sticker, bad registration. We called the Silver Spring location and were told the registration automatically renews...but that still doesn't fix the fact that we'll get pulled over the moment a cop sees the bad registration sticker... Granted it would show up as good in the system, but what else would they try to nab us for... We would like to avoid unnecessary encounters with police, thank you very much. Brought that car to the Silver Spring location to get one with an obviously good registration. The car was good enough. The location's staff were friendly, though the building was a little dingy. When we rented the car at the TF Green location, we had to give our debit card because the insurance hadn't gone through yet. We expected that they would just switch everything over to the insurance company. HA. Silly us for expecting something so seemingly simple. When we first rented the original car, they held $360 or so from our checking account. A couple days later, the hold disappeared. Next thing we know, every day the amount changed that was being held. $4, $131, $90, etc. Terribly inconvenient because we simply don't have money to waste like this. Like many Americans, we're barely scraping by. We contacted the collision center fixing our car who works directly with Hertz. They said they would take care of it. Even after this, the holds were still on our account, fluctuating daily. A week or so later, we start getting calls saying we haven't returned the car yet. Duh. Our car isn't done being fixed yet... I call Hertz and they say we have to pay $324.70. We don't have that kind of money. We were expecting the insurance to cover this with no cost to us. I told the woman on the phone that this is not acceptable, the insurance is paying for it, and that we don't have the money. She proceed to tell me that if we didn't return the car within so many days, they will be out to repo it... I am never again dealing with Hertz, and will discourage ANYONE I speak with to go to another rental company. This has been NOTHING but a HASSLE when we should have never been inconvenienced in the first place. read more

Let me tell you, this location has improved quite a bit the past few years. The new manager, Dana is AMAZING to work with. She will and does do anything she can within her power to help you. A lot of people seem to leave negative reviews about how the employees aren't willing to help, however they aren't ABLE to. This is a hertz corporate location and not an airport location which means they can't pull strings like the airport can. However, as a Gold 5 Star member, they treat me as I feel I should be treated. Perfect example, the Hertz website states I should be getting a free upgrade EVERYTIME I go. She pointed out to me technically it is on an "as available basis". She also tells me outright if I am unable to get the upgrade, or what day I CAN get the upgrade. I rent weekly from this place, and after getting on a more personal level with people, you tend to see their "non-customer service, not always smiling" side. And trust me, I've seen them all when they are stressed out, and they still try to help me the best they can. The cars are clean, the service is good, and they are ALWAYS willing to help you (even if they have 30 rentals going out of there in a day) I will NEVER use the airport again simply because compared to the silver spring location, they're useless. The airport wants to pump cars out, and even with someone with a good customer history, they treat you like a no name and they aren't welcoming. Horrible, Horrible, Horrible....... THE TF GREEN AIRPORT LOCATION and this location......This location says they are not connected with the airport location yet Hertz gave me their number to address concerns for the airport location. The airport location says they are required to charge all the fees by the airport authority. Experience spelled out: We rented a car from the airport location. The blizzard hit and had to rent an extra day. They refused to honor the rate for the extension which is within their rights but then they quoted us a rate that was already higher than the extended rental rate that was printed in our original rental agreement and could not explain where they came up with the different rate. Then our flight got canceled so we had to fly out of Boston. They wanted a $1,000 fee to return in Boston until I got Hertz corporate involved. Now gets better.....just wait.....turn the car in at Boston and the agent says they have fees on here I have never even seen before. When you get home call Hertz main customer service this is not right. Hertz corporate gets a call and they cannot explain some of the fees on the invoice. They refer me to Boston thinking Boston misunderstood and added taxes unknowingly....nope Boston say you need to speak to these jokers. They ran an original bill of $141.51 all the way up to $377.65 for an added day and their fluff fees. Fluff fees included Concession fee - allegedly because the airport charges them for each rental sent out = $27.53, O and M fee (Hertz did not even understand this fee- but its a fee to help them buy new cars allegedly. Is that not called part of the rental and costs), Customer facility charge $24.00 Hertz could not explain why that is not the same as a concession fee, Energy surcharge of $1.49, Tax differential (which is not a tax at all but the location says is another service fee- wait did I not already pay that once or twice before?), and then the regular tax of $24.71........... Update.....I called the TF Green Airport administration and nobody can confirm the exact fees rental car companies based at the airport should be charging.....The gentleman at the TF Green location stated that all those fluff fees are required by the airport and they have been complaining to the airport. When asked for who I complain to he says "I don't know over there." Kinda fishy.......All I can say is as a Hertz Gold Rewards and Marriott Platinum, After this experience, I am done with Hertz and absolutely will avoid the TF Green airport for flights. My boss went nuts when he saw all the fluff fees. We travel to Boston, Philly and other high priced places for rentals and TF Green is out of their mind with these fees. I hope TF Green administration read this. We have 12 guys in our department and each could fly through Boston or Green and guess what we will not be using Green any longer because of this. read more

It's sad to hear that people had such bad experiences with this location because I had a great experience. Juan, the manager, was very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The shuttle picked me up promptly. I got a free upgrade - I had asked for an economy size and was given a compact at no additional charge since there were no economy size vehicles left. The polices and whatnot were explained to me thoroughly and clearly. My only complaint was that I did not receive an email confirmation after I booked the reservation so I had to call about it. I have been renting from this location for over 20 years. I made a reservation well in advance to rent a car for 12 days. I got a midsize car that was dirty & pretty banged up on the bumper. I tried to exchange it twice but it was a holiday weekend so I waited a few days & they never had a car that fit me. I would never drive a car like that on my own so why should I pay good money to rent one. Budget had a better deal at $149 a week. I like the manager there but I don't like the cost of driving a junk car for full price. I'll check out other options in the future read more

Not only is the staff incompetent, hypocritical and deceitful, the location is dangerous. Here is a quick summary: 1. Needed a car to drive my daughters so I had to leave my work van overnight at the rental location. Asked if I could park van on edge of their lot and was told NO, no explanation of why or suggestion of alternative. - my van was sideswiped while parked on the street outside Hertz 2. I am not sure how involved Hertz's reservation sequence is, but should it really take a customer 30 minutes to rent a car in a location that has 4 employees and NO customers? Not sure about the two hipsters that were texting and eating but the one that I got was clueless. 3. In returning the car, they decided that it 'smelled' like smoke and assessed a $50 cleaning fee. I challenged this, stating that for the 30 miles that I had driven in the car with my daughters, I DID NOT smoke in the car. They explained that they had decided that it smelled like smoke and they would take several hours to clean, detail and 'isolate' the car from other customers. they cited no evidence of ash or burns, just that it 'smelled' like someone 'might' have smoked in the car, or next to it. Seriously... They weren't so concerned about the cars cleanliness to do something about the nasty vomit stain all across the back seat. DONT GO HERE !!!! read more

Absolutely the most horrible car rental experience! Never use Hertz again and I'm a Gold Plus customer. Was supposed to pick up rental on the 23rd at 8:30 in Pawtucket and was called shortly before pick up time that it was changed to Providence. Luckily, I was able to get a ride. The car being in the garage was the next sign of "bad". When I saw the car and asked for the Toyota beside it, was told it was returned by a smoker and had to air out. Was given a 2014 banged up Nissan with no bluetooth (which I needed), cig lighter outlets weren't working which left me with no way to charge cell phone when traveling into Boston for 3 days of graduation ceremonies, almost 35K miles and tires weren't good, can't contact corporate and had it for 5 days before I could exchange it at another local Hertz dealer.
