Unfortunately I did not read these reviews prior to booking but seemed to have had a similar experience to many others on this site. Used my own car insurance and got charged around $2k for damage to the hood that was possibly from hail (3/4" dent with paint penetration qualifying as damage) though I had the car for about 15 hrs and experienced no inclement weather. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THOROUGH PICTURES/VIDEO or a walk around with employee before and after to avoid this. Get names/times etc. Many of the hotels/National parks/Gas stations etc keep footage for 2-4 weeks as well if you don't happen to get your own pictures. The auto shop/Purco/Hertz people I spoke with were all very shady and there were constant troubles of "not being able to download files", "time stamped photos are unnecessary" and things like " you are not entitled to that information". They definitely try to pressure you into paying quickly but keep pressing for more information. I mentioned nearly 10 yrs of sketchy yelp/trip advisor reviews to the staff as well and was met with that negative reviews are just much more common in this line of business etc. Save yourself the hassle and go elsewhere or be incredibly thorough upon renting. Going to report on TripAdvisor and BBB as well. It is entirely possible that this damage did occur during my brief time with the car though the whole scheme of the claim with threats is just pressuring customers to pay. When I rented from them 4 years ago they tried to scam me by notifying me weeks after I rented that I owed them money for hail damage. They are also affiliated with the body shop where they get all of these false repairs done. They are professional crooks with a long history of doing this. These guys are crooks. Stay away! I rented with them (first time using Hertz) and did not buy the insurance. Apparently many rental car companies have a practice of submitting claims around $500 against people who do not buy the insurance, as that is a typical auto insurance deductible. I was the victim of one of these scams. And while I fought the claim (they claimed a tiny door ding, which I contested did not occur during my rental), ultimately I ended up paying off the third party claim company they sent after me. They would not let me rent the vehicle using my debit card and told me the new policy was started enforcing credit card only depot 23 days earlier. I asked for the manager and got another young guy who was not empathetic fo my situation. I told him I wanted to talk to corporate and he told me he is it. Lame customer service and lame company. It started off well. The small airport is nice and the young man at the counter was nice. But some red flags raised when he was very insistent in making sure we knew we would be responsible for ANY damage if we did not buy the insurance...even a tiny ding...and there was actually an illustration at the counter of the sizes of dings and pointing out that we would be responsible for all of them (even tho most small dings and scratches on rentals are usually considered normal wear and tear and not charged to the renter). We were given a diagram of our car with current damage noted and were to review it when reaching our car. No Hertz employee went with us to do this. We returned the car, damage free, and left it on the open air rental lot. No employee came out to inspect it. Weeks later a third party tried to collect money from us for damages they say were caused to the car while in our possession. Long story short, they dropped the claim. Private message me if you need advice on how to accomplish this. But after finding numerous other stories online just like mine about this particular Hertz office, I'm astounded that they're still running the business the same and still pulling this on people. It needs to stop. But if you do rent from them, cover your a**. Make them inspect the car with you before and after and have them sign off when you leave saying you caused no damage. They did not have the car I booked and stuck me with a vehicle I did not want. They were indifferent about this too. I eventually traded it at the expense of my time and hassle. They did nothing to smooth over this situation, didn't even offer to top it off with fuel, nothing, a pretty big issue which costs me hours of my time and hassle and lost vacation hours. Then they charged me $90.48 over my initial booking and said it was right. I later call the 800# for the main Hertz customer service and am told they indeed did not give me my full AAA discount but noone is going to refund this difference. My flight was at 0530. I got a call from some Hertz damage investigator that the truck has hail damage while I had it. I was never in any weather. So I did my own research. As you should do when you are falsely accused. People and animals outdoors will be injured. expect hail damage to roofs, siding, windows, and vehicles. expect considerable tree damage. wind damage is also likely to mobile homes, roofs, and outbuildings. locations impacted include, rapid city, rapid valley, ellsworth air force base, box elder, new underwood, caputa, farmingdale, rapid city airport, thompson butte and railroad buttes. this includes interstate 90 in south dakota between mile markers 57 and 81. A tornado watch remains in effect until 1000 pm mdt for west central south dakota. I was already in North Carolina when this storm occurred at the Rapid City Airport of all places. So if you rented a car on the 18th you need to make sure they do not try to scam you to pay for their damage. read more

I had a trip to Spearfish planned for athletics. Numerous flight were delayed coming from DC and Dallas. I called and spoke with Hertz and explained when I would be arriving, they said it would not be a problem, they would be open at that time and I would have a car. I figured Hertz had a good reputation and all the rental agencies had very similar prices so I booked a car online for my trip. Check out was quick, though the guy at the counter was obviously bored and droned on about the details. He did explain there was an $18 charge added that would be credited back if the car was returned clean and filled with gas. There were 60 mph winds when I returned the car so no one went out to check on it. When I got home I received 2 emails: the first crediting back the $18 and the second charging $18. I sent 2 emails asking why since the car was fairly clean and had a full tank of gas. I never got a response. So I talked to my credit card company and I had proof that I bought gas in Rapid City since I used the same credit card. Hertz didn't respond to my credit card company either so I got the credit back. But it was annoying to have to go through this. And I've read the other complaints listed here. I will check reviews before renting a car again. And I probably won't use Hertz again. Hertz also never responded to the negative review I gave them on the survey they sent me. Be aware of a bait and switch! We reserved a mini van at a cost of around 800.00 for the week through AAA. Upon arriving we were told that a mini van wasn't available and that the only available vehicle that would meet our needs was a large suv at 1900.00. These prices don't include taxes and insurance. We happened to notice a mini van sitting right outside the door and we asked about that vehicle and were told it was reserved for a later arriving party. Needless to say this is very poor customer service. AAA resolved the issue the next day to our satisfaction after a lot of negotiating and one day of not having a vehicle. Just got dicked out of $116.36 for an "extra day" of rental on a car that I had rented for 9 days at $256.62. Yes--that's an extra 45% charge for one day compared to my bill for an entire nine days. I made two bookings on Hotwire--one for an SUV for the first several days of our trip while our party would be five people, and the second for a full-size car for the remaining nine days after our party shrank to two people. Apparently I returned the SUV and picked up the car a couple hours earlier than planned when taking family to the airport, therefore, when I returned the car at the time I originally planned for, those extra two hours got translated into an extra day. And because they consider that time outside the rate that Hotwire secured for me, they were only too happy to charge me a full $90/day. I've rented cars for years from Hertz and other agencies and never been treated to this before. The agents said nothing to me about any changes to my terms or any charges at pick up or return. The charge for $116.36 just showed up several days after my trip had ended. I made two phone calls to the agency to dispute the charge, but apparently they want to screw me over this and don't care about my repeat business. I return to the Hills every year for at least two weeks to visit my family as I'm originally from the area and always rent cars for my trips. This trip I rented the SUV for $444.89 and the car for $256.62. So take that last $116.36 from me, Hertz of Rapid City, and enjoy it. I made reservations in advance via the internet. I paid in advanced so it appeared we were going to get a discounted rate. We arrived at Rapid City in our 40 foot motor home and I dropped my wife off at the bus lane in front of the airport. She went in and it went down hill. I could not drive the car unless I personally went in with my drivers license. Since there is a lack of RV parking at the airport, that was not going to happen. So she ended up solo driver. Then there were all the extra fees they tried to tack on, which she refused. Then she was told if we smoked in the car, had a cat or dog in the car, there would be a large fee for "detailing" the car due to people with allergies. Plus the usual BS about a full gas tank, etc. When my wife returned the car 12 hours early there was no one in the return lot to turn the car over to. Eventually a couple of guys washing cars told her to park at the front and go inside. She did that and when she asked about inspecting the car the guy at the counter said no, it would be inspected when it got washed. So she said there was no damages and since he did not want to inspect, we would put down that it was undamaged and that they had better not try to charge for damages later. Then after we left, a couple of days later they charged an additional $110. Seems there were "local fees" that the national agency did not know about so were not on their website list. So instead of getting a better deal paying in advanced all it did was break the bill down into two billings. Better figure $65 per day no matter how you figure it. (THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I POST IN YELP. YOU CAN UNDERSTAND HOW UPSET I AM) This is the worst Hertz experience I ever had. The manager there Tim P. is totally unprofessional, rude and unethical. He would rent out vehicles that are not properly serviced or maintained. I rented a Toyota Corolla for 10 days, I picked it up from Rapid City airport location and intended to return it to Bozeman, MT for my vacation. After driving about 150 miles or so, the "MAIN REQD" light was on. I was in the mountain area with dense fog. The cell signal was weak, Wherever I could, I called the Hertz Roadside Assistance. They told me that it might be the gas lid not closed properly I subsequently refilled gas two times and the light still did not go away. When I called back Roadside Assistance, they asked that I exchanged a car at a location 40 miles away. In the meantime, we had to drive in a poor weather condition with a fear that the car might breakdown, not to mention to it also took away half of our day from vacation for the 80 miles round trip. I was advised by the exchange location to contact Hertz at Rapid City. When I called Hertz at Rapid City airport location, I was told that the signal was due to the oil change and I should have read the operation manual instead of calling Roadside. I know that generally the "MAIN REQD" can signify different problems. When I asked if they were certain that it was for the oil change, they could not. They also told me that with Toyota, the minute after they change the oil. the "MAIN REQD" for oil change can come on, which I found it hard to believe. I had a Toyota before and this never happened. I asked to speak to Tim, the manager. He said he would call me back but never did. I subsequently called him a few times. Each time his staff said he said he would return my call. He totally ignored me I found this behavior totally unacceptable. I finally called him back today and asked for him, he insisted that "MAIN REQD" light is a normal problem for the oil change. I totally disagreed. If that is true, since they know that I will be renting a car for 10 days returning to a different state, they should make sure the oil life will be good for another thousand miles before they release it to a customer. The light should not come on after 150 miles after I picked up the car. In addition, most customers would not know what the exact underlying problem is. Driving with fear in the Montana or Wyoming mountainous areas with the problem light on can be worrisome and caused additional distraction or accidents. It is totally unsafe to drive under those conditions. I have filed a complaint to the Hertz Headquarter and received no response. Since neither Tim nor the Headquarter respond to any of my phone calls, I filed a complaint to BBB. Tim received the complaint and tried to close the complaint by sending me a $50 gift certificate. He should understand that $50 gift certificate is useless to me as I am not planning to rent from Hertz anymore. I feel that I should let everyone be aware of the Hertz at Rapid City airport location before they rent any vehicle there. read more

I filled up the Chrysler 300 only 15 miles from the airport and drove straight to the airport with no stop and go. Hertz charged me 30 dollars for half a tank of gas and claimed there was 4.1 gallons that needed filled. They would not make it right and refund my money. Instead they told me I was wrong when it's impossible to go through 4 gallons in 15 miles when the car averages 26mpg read more

All went well with our pick up in Rapid City airport but fell apart quickly when we decided twelve days later to return it to the Salt Lake City airport instead of the Park City location which is thirty miles from the airport we were flying! For some crazy reason the Rapid City agents (evidently private owned) wanted us to pay an EXTRA $100 per day of our 12 day stay. That's an extra $1200!!!! Bless the Hertz agent (Darlene) at Park City, Utah for helping us find a solution!! That agency is company owned and not a licensee like Rapid City, SD. The interesting thing about Park City, Utah was that she WANTED us to return the rental car to the airport so their agency wouldn't have to do so! Read a lot of bad reviews for this Hertz location but that was not our experience. When we arrived, Josh promptly helped me and could not have been any better. No pressure to buy insurance or anything else. Gave me some information about where we would be traveling, directed me to the car, and we were on our way. The car we rented was just what we wanted so we were happy campers. After reading those reviews, we did take pictures of the complete car when we checked it in just in case. Especially since we had an early flight and they weren't yet open. One thing to remember is that this area does occasionally get hail. Be sure to check on your own insurance, or credit card coverage, to see if they have you covered. read more

We set up a long term rental for my husband's business travel. We picked the car up today and on the way home we tried to use the cruise control and it didn't work. We drove back to Hertz expecting to not have an issue and just exchange for another vehicle. Unfortunately that is not what happened. They told us they didn't have any other vehicles in our vehicle class or lower but they did have vehicles in the next class higher. I asked the obvious question, could they give us the upgraded vehicle for the same price because the vehicle we were given is not operating properly and we were told sure, for $10 more a day! My insurance company paid for repair of all physical damage $4,666.48 and Hertz still billed me $5,239.62 for diminished value and rental fees lost for repairs. First off, they give me a car with a cracked windshield that is spreading. Upon realizing that my trip must be extended, I call them to check about holding the car for an additional 12 hours. LITERALLY 8 hours, but whose counting. Anyway, the person who answers the phone proceeds to tell me that I will be charged $130!! FYI, that is nearly double what I paid PER DAY!!! I politely clarify that I had asked about this when I picked up the car the first night. No budging, $130. "All our cars are reserved and it is necessary to have all cars...". This Hertz and PurCo is trying to charge me $8673.72 for damage that didn't occur during my rental period. If anybody has advice about how to best fight this, I'm all ears. Does anyone knows of a class action lawsuit or anyway to fight this? In the meantime I will keep contesting their charges. They are saying that I dented the hood and the roof. I say, sounds like a crooked scheme. This whole situation is the biggest load of BS I've ever had to deal with. Never rent here! After declining their insurance they cautioned me "are you sure, because there has been a lot of hail damage in the area and you would be liable". Guess what? The car was turned in in perfect condition. Three weeks later I get a letter saying they are filing a claim due to hail damage. There wasn't even any rain the entire trip. My insurance co paid the claim because they said it was cheaper to pay than fight. That leaves me paying $500 deductible. I have never felt more violated! I will not pay for something that is fraudulent. They have sent me final notice and will soon turn over to collections. read more
