We picked up a 2022 Dodge Durango for a week at the Hilton in downtown Rapid City. The car had a full tank of gas and looked somewhat clean on the inside and out. The windows are tinted so you can't see in and a full-size spare tire is underneath the vehicle. It was a comfortable SUV to drive. Unlike other rental car agencies, there is no "touchless" pickup at SEA-TAC airport. So waited in line for 20 minutes at a counter with eight positions, only two of which were staffed. Their agents are paid on commission to upsell you insurance, vehicle upgrades, XM radio, navigation systems, etc. so they want you to talk to an agent even when there's nothing to say. My reservation said "Toyota Camry or similar", but I drove off in a Dodge Hornet (a "sporty plug-in hybrid" compact crossover) barely large enough for three people and their luggage. Ended up paying $650 for six days, about $200 above the advertised price due to silly add-on hidden charges like "Concession Recovery Fee (11.11%)"; "Customer Facility Charge ($7.75 per day)"; "Energy Recovery Fee ($0.60 per day)" and "Vehicle License Fee ($0.99 per day)". These are meant to sound like government surcharges, but are not. read more

Worst experience dealing with management, the employees are doing their job but to get a call back from a manager, a call back from this location manager is like asking the president if the USA to call you back. Ive been calling daily to help resolve an issue that was promised to be easily resolved with a promise daily a call back, it's been 5 days and not call back. I do not understand what type of company has management that hides like a kid from a problem. I will let corporate know that management does not understand customer service. read more

Checked in for my car rental that was already reserved and got such a poor service. I definitely felt I was an inconvenience and just started off my experience with this location bad. They ask if you are going to drive far, is that so they can give you a poorer choice of a vehicle. The big thing they need to realize that all the other rental companies are just 20 feet away. Although I had to wait for a car for a couple of hours, I found that the ladies behind the counter were very professional in a tough situation. Note that this shortage seems to be the rule, not the exception. Next, be aware of sticker shock on your bill: I think taxes are close to 30%. We got hit by a deer on the highway driving to SD from CO and needless to say, rental car was trashed. Called Avis in Rapid City and Melissa was amazing! Got us into a new car right away and handled the damaged car being picked up by the tow truck. She was an absolute sweetheart and made this whole experience stress free. read more

I rented a car through Priceline and was quoted $138.03 with taxes and fees for a 24 hour rental. I returned the car 21 minutes early at Avis' counter but since they were busy and we had a flight to catch I completed the paperwork and dropped it in their car return drop box with the keys. I put a total of 44 miles on the car and left it in perfect condition including filling the tank right before returning it. When I got home I received an email with my final invoice totaling $205.07. I called to see why I was charged so much and was told I returned the car an hour late which is a complete lie. We never even got to the basic overcharge or the fact I was charged for gas. I was told the manager would call me tomorrow... I hope that happens but either way, the Avis car rental center at the Rapid City airport falsified paperwork to make it look like I returned the car late... thank God I took pictures! My wife and I just returned from Rapid City and had a fantastic rental car experience with Avis. I called and left a message before the trip to ensure a car would be available being it was a holiday weekend and they were sold out after our booking. Richard from Avis returned my call to ensure us we would have a medium SUV as reserved. Richard was working both on the arrival and drop off and was very friendly and helpful. The medium SUV was clean and ran well. We were very happy with the entire rental experience and want to thank Richard for going above and beyond. read more

A car rental company is a car rental company as far as I am concerned. They all have newish cars and their prices all seem competitive. Basically, the only way for me to compare them is to rate them on their customer service. That said, there's a reason I always use their competitor and will not use Avis again. What happened? Scare tactics, I believe. In the amount of $25.99. When the sales agent didn't like my answer of "No" to his question "Would you like to buy the additional insurance?" he claimed a "HUGE" hail storm with "Golf ball sized hail" was rolling in "Within hours" and that my insurance would not cover the damage. I tried to say mine would, but he convinced me that even if it did, the car would be in the shop for days and that I would have to cover their loss of it being out of commission. Wouldn't you know, once I rolled out of the parking lot and turned the radio to the weather station, the forecaster only mentioned "Rain", "That night". Night was 12 hours away and I only needed the car for 6 hours. Needless to say, when I returned the car, another worker was on duty and refused to credit me the $25.99, saying "Only a manager can override that charge and he won't be in for 4 days". Okay, 4 days later, I called for the manager and got a curt no-can-do for my $25.99 "addt'l insurance" credit request. When I asked "Would you rather I dispute that on my credit card?" He replied "Sure". Done. I have disputed the amount on my credit card. Now, instead of turning my bad feelings towards this transaction around, he's made my feelings towards this company worse. Not that the manager that I spoke with sounded as though he cared. It seems to me that the people working for Avis (that I dealt with) solely base their revenue on new customers and not repeat customers. I have received an email back from corporate disputes department. They said no to the credit as well, because I signed the papers agreeing to pay for the insurance. Not that it matters that I explained that I only signed them because the man at the pick-up location told me a horrific storm was coming, that would greatly damage the car, or that my insurance wouldn't cover it. It's not like I was asking for the $100 rental fee back; just the insurance. I guess they would also rather lose my business than credit me the $25.99. read more

My wife and I flew into the Grand Rapids airport on our trip to Mount Rushmore. We had a great experience with the staff and with the process. We even added my wife as an extra driver without any headaches from staff that can often be the case with other rental companies. They had the car available for us with clear directions of where it was at in the parking lot. They offered us additional benefits without trying to force them down our throats or use scare tactics. They rented me a Subaru with a defective ignition switch. Got stranded in the Badlands. Key would not turn. Avis did nothing to assist. No help. No empathy. "Solve it yourself". Luckily we had internet, went on YouTube, found "Subaru ignition lock" and learned how to overcome the defect. Why didn't Avis tell us that? As far as they know, we are still stuck in the Badlands living off prairie dogs. Also, the car was dirty when we got it. Trunk lock gets stuck. Bad experience. read more

If I could rate lower than 1 Star I would. Do not rent from this Avis location. The staff is rude and just plain awful. The car we rented had air conditioning that didn't work. When we asked to have another car they made us drive all the way back to the airport to exchange the auto. The counter rep (Lindsey) actually hung up on us when we called. The manager told us to go ahead and call the corporate office because he wasn't going to adjust our bill. Thankfully we got a great car and even greater service from the Hertz rental agency at the Rapid City airport. They were great to work with and really had good customer service. Maybe Avis should take lessons from them !!! read more

There must be something going on with car rental companies at this airport. We had a horrible experience with Hertz here last year - they did a bait and switch saying the car we contracted for wasn't available and they had no internal record of our contract. We took what they had and later battled them through our credit card company. Hence, we used Avis this trip. As with Hertz, Avis didn't have the car we contracted for and swapped in a much larger vehicle. They also tried to pull a fast one with prepaid gasoline charges. I had them rewrite the contract without the gasoline fees. All went well with the actual vehicle, but we were an hour and half late returning the car (5 day rental). They hit us up $44.00 for that --- almost $30.00 an hour!!! I'm sure there's hidden language in the contract granted them the priviledge to gouge like that, but it taints their reputation. I am writing on first hand knowledge of an incredibly incompetent handling of a rental transaction with Avis. On August 22, 2021, my colleague rented a Toyota Corolla from the Rapid City Airport Avis kiosk. He purchased all the rental insurance coverages and roadside assistance. On August 23, 2021, while operating the vehicle on the Wyoming highways, on the way to the fabled Devil's Tower, the rear tire blew out. My colleague, a learned mechanic, changed the tire with the provided "donut". As any one worth his salt would know, one cannot drive for extended time on a donut. He contacted roadside assistance, who informed him that they would charge him for the service-- a service that he paid for. He called Avis, who told him to get the tire repaired at a local shop; however, reimbursement was not guaranteed. He attempted to return the vehicle to the Gillette airport as the Rapid City airport was over 2 hours, 155 miles away. As Gillette had no vehicles, my colleague attempted to get assistance from Rapid City and roadside assistance with the same results. Consequently, he left the vehicle parked at his hotel and he had to secure rides from others. On August 24, 2021, he contacted Rapid City Avis, and spoke with "Jeffrey". Not only did he give conflicting information, he was ignorant, rude and belligerent. He actually suggested that the vehicle be taken to a local repair shop the next morning- the morning he had to catch a flight back home from an airport about 2 hours away. He further threatened my colleague with a $1,000 fine if he dared return the vehicle to Gillette. And just so you know, he claimed that Rapid City was independent of any corporate office and that Gillette had nothing to do with them. That statement conflicted with that of the Gillette manager, and still conflicts to this day. Finally, when informed that any attempts to charge the credit card for the $1,000, would be blocked, Jeffrey threatened with litigation and crowed that they could not be beaten in court. The call was terminated by Jeffrey, and after going through several possible resolutions with roadside, they agreed to pick up the vehicle and tow it to Gillette. The rep indicated that she spoke to a manager who represented that she managed both offices. We recorded the conversation for posterity and the vehicle was towed to Gillette. Upon closing out the contract at Rapid City the following morning on the day of the flight, the rep still insisted that Gillette had nothing to do with them and totally undermined the instruction of roadside assistance until he was shown that we had the conversation recorded. The account was closed, and my colleague caught his plane. My closing thoughts? I expected better from such a reputable company. Shame on them. My colleague paid $400+ for an economy rental which he only used for one day. ----And Jeffrey claimed that the blowout was not Avis' fault and suggested the my colleague may have ran over an elk. Really? He even claimed that inspected the tires on each of the vehicles before they were rented. If anything, my colleague traveled slower than speed limit- he was following us and we had to pull over several times before he caught up. My colleague deserves a refund and Jeffrey is an idiot. read more

But, instead I went into Avis at the airport and Josh Becker and Eric Colgrove took their time and worked everything out to my advantage! Great work! Great customer service! This establishment is a straight up fraud. They will try to instruct you not to fill up your tank before returning the car by stating that they charge a lower rate than the gas stations nearby. What they don't tell you is that they will charge you for a FULL TANK regardless of how full you bring it back as. No joke the lady who rented us the car literally said "It's cheaper to not fill it up." They then tack on a massive charge and swiped my credit card before I could say anything or even check the bill. That's right, we were NOT informed of the charge until they had swiped and closed out the account. We tried to clarify and the male staff member instantly said that he would be calling airport security if we didn't comply. I knew racism was a problem out in South Dakota but I never thought that law enforcement threat would be used against me over a rental car. I only found out once the bill was handed to me. This bait and switch is not how you do business and is a complete fraud. Do not use their service! read more

I had prepaid for my car with a travel agency. The front desk asked me if I wanted the insurance and the gas option. I said fine, how much would it cost considering I had already forked over $300 for the car already. Notice my surprise when they charged me an additional $300 after I had returned the car. They said the gas would only cost $1.98/gallon, and I returned the car with the tank half filled. I had filled up the tank earlier to the tune of about $30. To find out that I was charged $33 for filling only half a tank is unbelievable. As for the insurance, maybe I'm naive, but I was not aware that insurance was $188 plus taxes and fees for only six days, almost double what I pay for my own car. So thanks for customer service's clear (unclear) communication on the charges to my account. Never rent with Avis. read more

My family rented a car from Avis at the Rapid City airport in June. We returned the car with absolutely no damage at the end of our trip. Weeks later, we received a phone call from a claims company in Utah claiming there was over $8,000 in damage to the car! When we asked for photos of the damage, they were dated days after we turned in the car. This is a clear attempt to scare and extort money from renters from Avis and their collection agent. The most disgusting part is that we have rented from Avis for over 20 years. Never again! I would highly recommend renting from someone else. read more
