Will NEVER use Hertz again - 59 years old and worst customer experience of my life. 1. The original reservation was for a mid-size SUV. The counter agent in Sarasota Florida argued with my wife (who drives a full-sized European SUV) and told her she couldn't handle anything larger. (sexist) 2. The counter agent refused to let her decline the OPTIONAL damage waiver and refused to rental if she did not take it - in spite of the form saying it was not under coercion or duress. 3. This overcharged the rental (doubled the price) 4. When I called mid-rental to add myself they refused - and my wife had to drive 15 hours (said it had to be added in person) 5. Same call arguing about the wrong vehicle with 3 adults on a 9 hour drive - I had an agent who could not speak English - who argued with me when I asked for a supervisor ("Why?" answer - "because you lack the authority") When I got a supervisor they "put notes" but could not remove the bogus damage waiver charge "until the car is turned in". He promised to call back "next day at 9 am" (didn't) He promised to process refund (didn't) I insisted on an email while on the phone - that took 15 minutes of them figuring out how to provide me proof (because I have read other horror stories of Hertz online. 6. Had to call back today to confirm refund. Their AI is RUDE (interrupts) and RACIST (I spelled my eastern-european name It ignored me and said "that is not the name on the rental" and proceeded to insist upon spelling it phonetically. This is the 2nd time the AI refuses to "get an agent" - it repeatedly says "we will get through this" in a condescending fashion. 7. The agent (20 minutes later) today spoke even worse English - not as a first or second language - just can't function in the language. 8. The info you must tell the AI (rental record) is not passed forward to the agent so you get to repeat that, your name (while they question you), they argue about it being your spouse with same last name, they want checkout and checkin date. Then they waste time, put you on hold 3 or 4 times - spend 10 minutes doing a 30 second task ("process the refund that the manager put notes in about in less than 2 minutes"). Let me put this very clearly - I am a computer engineer who doesn't have a job in my field in this country due to moronic decisions like this by front-office Peter-Principle idiots who would not know "customer service" if it bit them in the rump. I feel for the poor 3rd world call center (that is not Panama, Nicaragua, the Phillipines, Belize, or any of the places in the world that CAN do this with passable English-language skills - so Hertz without question scraped the bottom of the global barrel for their vendor. Their managers/officers clearly have never used their own processes or played "undercover boss". The experience must be hell for the poor call center - I guarantee one hundred percent of their calls are people who are pushed to the point of fury. You add to this Hertz's game of video checkins that mistake glare for dents - and their habit of sending out arrest warrants on extended contracts and returned cars (google it - we knew about this and took dozens of pictures on a car FAR less than perfect when we got it). It's just not worth the stress and headache. This miserable company cannot die fast enough. I could not possibly list the Senior executives who all deserve to be fired and lose their million-dollar salaries retroactively to the day they were born. One can only hope there is corporate justice in the world and they pay the ultimate price. I have been using Hertz for many years and have never had such a disgusting experience as in this Venice, Fl office. My job at Ford had required intensive travel and I can claim hundreds of car rentals over the 30 years of my career. Upon return, clerk objected vehicle's cleanliness and punished me with the $400 cleaning fee. There were no scratches, stains, paint spots, burns, oils and, or chemical spots or traces. We don't smoke or do drugs. The vehicle has been returned after three weeks of rental and does require normal vacuum cleaning and preparation before the next rental. There were a few bread crumbs, limited fiber from my wife's cashmere jacket and a few flower leaf. The clerk complained his Hertz office is short on people and he would need to clean the vehicle. The clerk refused to provide his manager's full contact information and provided me with the receipt where a charge of $400 was listed as an accepted charge. He declined to revise the receipt with the statement that the interior cleaning fee of $400.00 was the disputed charge. Hertz contract states that upon return car requires more than Hertz standard cleaning, Hertz may charge you an additional fee. The vehicle doesn't require more than vacuum cleaning. The clerk requested me to leave the office and threatened to call the police. I will be contacting Hertz head office on Monday to escalate the issue and will be exercising legal options to compensate my monetary and other damages. Now I need to return the car and be brought home and they're telling me they only have drivers on Monday and Tuesday and I need to take an Uber. It was quite clear from the beginning. I called to reserve a car for my neighbor and was given a confirmation number. I was told a car would be available at 3:30 today (4/5) at the Hertz location on Tamiami Trail in Venice Florida. When we arrived we were told there was not a car available because Hertz has an open reservation system. I rented a car for 48 hours and promptly returned it. The guy took my keys and I asked him if I needed anything else and he said no I would get an emailed receipt. I never got a receipt and then they called me a week later stating that I had never returned the car. I was shocked and told them I did a week ago and then they charged me for that whole week! Who would I speak to about getting absolutely screwed over by your company's customer service and poor planning? I showed up to get my rental, which they admitted to having the reservation for, but no car. I'm supposed to be moving my brother back to Indiana from Florida and now I'm screwed because of your poor planning. I was not allowed by the lone, apathetic staff member to speak with a manager or supervisor. Not only was I screwed over, but a number of other customers standing in the location as well who were either receiving a car they did not reserve, or no car at all. Not only that, but I was told there was no vehicle for me after the staff member had taken my credit card information. This is a concern because after looking at the yelp reviews for this Hertz location, it has come to my attention that they have a history of charging credit cards for cars they were not able to rent out to customers. This is inexcusable and must be addressed immediately. Seems to be an underhanded operation, and Hertz should be embarrassed. I come to Sarasota every year and so does my family. I rented a vehicle from them January 17-19. This is the second time we have rented from this location, and they confirmed for me that I will never rent from them again. The first time they gave us an old Altima with 40k+ miles on it with scratches all over. This time we paid for a compact car but were given a small Toyota Yaris that I'm almost positive was an economy car, and a downgrade. It had 30K miles on it. I am pretty sure they rent old cars and try to pull the wool over our eyes because we are younger, but we travel a lot and are familiar with renting cars. The representative flashed a price on the screen, which happened to be about what I paid to Hotwire. I specifically asked for the cheapest car. He asked how much luggage I had - 2 carry ons. Flashed a Nissan Ultima on the screen which I said was fine - I didn't realize he upgraded me to the tune of $32 a day!!! Shame on me for not understanding and actually trusting the rep. He NEVER mentioned upgrade. The manager I called offered to refund me half without viewing the video. I told her that was not acceptable. She said she would review the video but as long as he put a price on the screen I was responsible for it. She mentioned that it happens all the time. Don't use Hertz. We went into the office in Venice, Florida about 2 - 3 weeks before we needed the rental. We spent about 30 minutes there to make sure the car would be ready for us on the day and time we needed it. We were told they would pick us up at the body shop. They never showed. We had the body shop take us to the rental office. When we arrived there was no car ready. They told us they had no record of us coming in. After I told them we had been there earlier, they magically found it. We got there around 10:20 AM. We were then told they had already rented 19-20 cars that morning and that was why there were no cars, and they don't reserve cars for insurance customers. They only reserve cars when the insurance customers come in to the office. We were told that walk in customers have priority over insurance customers. Why did we spend 30 minutes earlier to have a car ready if that was the case? The agent that waited on us basically told us we were not being truthful about being there prior to reserve the car because that is not how they do it. When we finally got a vehicle, it was filthy. The mats were covered with dirt, sand. and rocks. The exterior of the car was filthy. The back hatch area was covered in what appeared to be broken chunks of drywall. The agent did vacuum the front mats off and do a quick job of washing the vehicle. He told us it was not his job to clean the vehicles and acted like he was doing us a favor by doing a quick clean on it. Nothing was done to the dirty hatch area. All of this was done while we were standing inside the office. The rear seats were filthy with who knows what. It appeared to be a stain from something that was spilled and ran all over and was never cleaned. All the agent wanted to do was argue with us that what we were saying could not have been true. He wanted to know who waited on us 2-3 weeks ago. We did not have his name, but I told him to check on the claim number we had from State Farm Insurance, and he then told us that Hertz does not save that kind of information. I then asked him if he knew the name of the person that waited on him in McDonalds 3 weeks ago. That is the same kind of reference as to being asked who we saw 3 weeks ago. He then loudly went around the office and pointed to people and asked "was it him"? He did this over and over with all of the people working in the office. I told him he could point to everyone and I still wouldn't know. He kept it up, so I told him yes to the last guy, but he just kept going. It took us the better part of an hour with this wise guy to finally drive away in the car. We had to go back inside the office again since he still had the key fob in his pocket. He was very unprofessional in his manner. The office was very dirty. The carpets had not been vacuumed lately. Huge black stains all over the carpets. All of the carpets need to be cleaned. Counter areas around the computers were covered with large amounts of dust. We had our own business for over 25 years and we would have been embarrassed by the condition of this office or the way this employee treated us. Example: I returned car which they claim they found a (less than a millimeter chip) and I would have to pay for it. What? I have never experienced such scrutiny from a rental car company. When I asked him to show me, he could barely find the speck! When I told them it may have already been there since it was so small, he just said, I had to pay. My first experience with Hertz on 5225 S. Tamiami Trail! Driver picked us up at local repair shop. Drove like a mad man back to the Hertz office. Told us to go inside for help. No one was visible in the office. A couple of minutes later a young man strolled in from the back. Never greeted us or offered us to sit down. Had to clean food wrappers and trash from the top of his desk then had to move paperwork to get to the computer. Chair next to his desk, I assume for customers, had his jacket draped across. Left me standing at the cube, never offered to move his jacket and let me sit. This was an insurance rental which was setup and confirmed in advance. Had to do all the info again. Threw the keys on the desk and pointed outside and said that's your car. Did not explain mileage, return, or anything. Did not bother to get up and walk out to show us the car!
