If you rent here and have issues on the road, Hertz will try to exchange your car at an airport but you will NOT be able to exchange at a local Hertz counter anywhere else. I was stuck with an off-track driver's window AND NO A/C for most of the ride. Hertz Roadside kept sending me to the rental desk at SYR but they NEVER picked up the phone (must have called 20 times in an hour)...also no ability to leave a message for assistance. When i returned the vehicle, one of the agents gave me a card with an email address and basically said good luck as he "hadn't talked to anyone at management in 2 weeks". Watch out for the crew at SYR Hertz desk. I booked a car on carrental.com. The original price was for $297 on a 7 day rental, a good deal. After I returned home SYR Hertz dinged me for a bill on the 7 day rental for $754.00. I called Hertz at the number from my credit card and got everything refunded(Thank You Hertz). Make sure you watch what they are doing? Also, they seem to have no dress code for the staff, they all dress like they are from the hood. read more

As a Hertz Hold member, I have enjoyed the convenience of being able to complete my rental agreement online, pay at checkout, and pick a car from the lot. However, I've had a much different experience this time. I get to the counter and the female working the counter was cold and calloused. She never greeted me with a smile, instead, she was rude in the way she kept telling me that I needed to leave my credit card in the credit card reader as she worked her computer. When I explained that made me uncomfortable, she started to get short with me about that being the necessary process to get things moving. In the end, she added all the upgrades and insurance that I've declined when I reserved the car, and up charged my credit card almost three times more than the agreement online. When I brought this up to her attention, she said the card was already ran. I asked for a supervisor and she sat there on her phone, perhaps texting her supervisor, but the whole process to get the price corrected took 40 minutes and 3 attempts in total. By this time the price was corrected, we were rushing to get to our destination with 3 receipts in hand, all with different prices. It was a frustrating start to the trip and an unpleasant experience with Hertz. I hope I'm the future, there will be better training for staff to efficiently and empathetically do their job especially at a location as busy as the airport. read more

This was by far the absolute worst car rental experience I've ever had. I was left waiting until nearly 1 a.m.--an hour and a half--for a car. The staff were completely incompetent, rude, and downright unprofessional. They had zero customer service skills and couldn't communicate anything beyond a pathetic excuse of "lack of staff." I had a reservation but they didn't have cars. The agent at the counter had poor communication skills and the manager was having a very bad day. They were waiting for customers to return cars. The line of customers waiting was about 24 people deep and about an hour wait. When we finally got our car, it reeked of cigarette smoke!! No way was I getting back in line to switch cars. Kess was terrific; he sprayed the interior down with Febreez and noted the smoke on my receipt so I wouldn't be charged for the PREVIOUS customer smoking in the vehicle. I'm a Hertz rewards member but would look at other options at this particular location. Poor management. read more

Reserved a car about a month ago and I was told they had no cars when I arrived and they put me on a waiting list at 6:27. Most places upgrade you so you don't have to wait. At 6:38 the guy said, "he had no idea" when the car would be available. Really? None whatsoever? So much for a reservation. I went on online chat to complain. He couldn't help me. Everyone has to wait in line in order to pick up their keys, the elite membership perks that allow you to walk up to a car and leave within minutes is nonexistent. Waited almost 2 hours on a weekday afternoon to get my keys, the line was horrendous and slowly moving. Only one employee was working at Hertz and he was also helping the Dollar counter. Nightmare experience and will avoid renting from them at all costs in the future. Of note, the Avis line was much more manageable so I recommend using them if you need a rental car at SYR. read more

Wow - the staff is beyond rude. They do not answer their phone and when they do they hang up immediately. I'm sorry but this is not acceptable even if the they are 'understaffed.' The issue: The car I picked up smelled like l marijuana, had a toothpick in the cup holder, hair and dirt all over the the seats ... and all the check this/that lights were on. I was told 'nuthin I can do.' Really!? Nuthin! No cars. No options. No return. Corporate was not helpful - roadside was not helpful. Their solution 'it's an independent dealer so you have to take it up with them.' Bottom line: don't use hertz. Ever! Spend the extra cash and go with enterprise. My family's experience with the Hertz was horrible. When we first arrived at the airport they wanted to charge us $900+ for a 3 day car rental when we already pre-paid for the car. Additionally, we left something in the car and no one from customer service can even talk to us. We submitted a form online, yet they haven't gotten back to us within the 3-5 business days. We also tried to view the products/items left in the car and the link doesn't even work. It is so frustrating when we can't even talk with someone. When we arrived their office was closed and there was no arrangement for us to pick up a car. I attempt yearly with this location for my holiday travels and sadly it never fails there is always a discrepancy. Even with being a 5 Star member the employees are extremely rude. The latest occurrence was with employee "Pete" I asked for a supervisor to call regarding incorrect fees and he insisted on cutting me off during the conversation and tried to hang up on me when he wasn't able to provide a call back time exception. He instead informed me to "to what I have to do" and that his supervisor is doing the job of 5/6 other employees, they are short staffed and is unsure if a call back will be within 48 hours or a week! Which is insane. There is no reason a customer should know your business is understaffed or what the supervisor is performing but a time bound expectation for a call back should be delivered. This is only one example. I will update my note once I hear from the supervisor. read more

I've got mixed feelings about this Hertz location. There is no Gold express service here - meaning no electronic board with your name on it. You walk up to the Hertz counter, stand in line, get your keys and agreement, then proceed out the door, cross the street and go into the garage to find your vehicle. At pick up, there was no wait. Guy working the counter that night was efficient and was able to give me directions to my hotel. The car however, was another matter. In general, I've had good luck with Hertz vehicles: cars in the past have been clean, well maintained, and functional. This vehicle had the passenger side windshield wiper falling off the wiper arm. The vehicle smelled like they had attempted to clean it with a substance designed to mask the smell of cigarettes. Finally, the car would vibrate annoyingly on the interstate. Upon return, there were no Hertz agents waiting for you. There is a sign advising that you need to note the mileage, fuel level, and lock the car. You then proceed inside to drop off the keys and get a receipt. I did not have to wait long at the counter, the man working the counter was apologetic and courteous when I described the problems with the vehicle. read more

I returned my car early-morning and there was no one there, so I left my keys in the drop box. 1.5-weeks later, I'm continuing to get calls from Hertz vehicle control that I didn't return my car. I took pictures of my car in the Hertz parking spot, but it doesn't matter because I'm still waiting on the Syracuse Hertz location to close out my return. In the meantime, I've already gotten an extra $700 charged to my credit card while waiting (and an additional $100 each day this goes on). I'm hoping a manager will see this and reply. Hands down the best customer service. Our flight was delayed. We booked a car with Avis. Got to the airport and Avis was closed. We called and called customer service and got no help. I almost cried. Thankfully Hertz was there to save the day. They got us a comparable rate even though it was last minute and the service people really cared about our well being since there was so much snow. No attendee when I went to return my car. I brought the keys inside to give to the receptionist and asked her for a receipt. She said she would have someone check it in now and have the receipt emailed to me within the hour. I got my receipt a day later with an additional day charged and an additional 140 miles driven. I tried calling the branch all day but the phone was busy every time. Finally I got hold of customer service on the internet and in 5-7 days they will send me the correct receipt I hope. Been a faithful customer for close to a year. Was recently upgraded to gold elite member status. Rented a full size car and was not upgraded as the gold status membership made it seem. Asked 3 separate times at the counter if I could be upgraded because their presidents circle was a Kia Optima. No one thinks a Kia Optima is a presidents circle car. Guys in front of me got a dodge challenger. Def more of a presidents circle type of car. Tried calling the hertz numbers 5 separate times and asked to speak to managers no one gave me the time of the day. Would of been totally happy if they just told me they would call in the morning and that I could come back and pick up a better car. But seriously for $650 plus no one thinks a Kia Optima is a nice car or even deserving of a "gold member". I tried to give them Several chances. And called 5 times to the numbers. We landed at midnight and went to pick up our reserved vehicle. The long was SOOO long and only one person we working the counter. That one employee was handy looking hertz and dollar rentals. Thankfully that employee was moving quickly but from a business perspective they should.be aware of what time the reservations are and should staff accordingly. I typically go with Enterprise, primarily out of habit, but I had to take advantage of the discounted prices when shopping around for my last trip. That, and I got some bonus miles with my United flyer program thing. It wasn't a bad first experience, but wasn't anything spectacular either. The check-in process was quick and friendly. After flying all day, I'm glad I didn't run into any big issues. However, I had reserved a compact car and all they had left was a choice between a Grand Marquis (not a fan of big boat-like cars) and a Versa. I chose the Versa. Not a terrible car. It got from point A to point B and back without any problems. However, I guess I'm used to a few more features in my rental cars... like a built in clock? I had to keep pulling out my cell phone to check the time, all the while hoping some NY State Trooper wouldn't pull me over for cell phone usage while driving. With my luck, something like that would totally happen. I will say that the Hertz wooden snowbrush/ice scraper in the passenger seat was a nice touch. It's not like I would have thought to bring my own, and it certainly came in handy on the last day of my adventure. The return process was equally uneventful as the check-in. Their return guy took all of the information, processed the transaction on my credit card, and wished us a safe trip home to New Orleans. Would I rent from Hertz again? I fly to Syracuse for business twice a month. I am gold / presidents circle. My car is already assigned and I have an envelope with a key sitting right behind the counter - just out of reach. Even though a sign says 'gold members' they do not utilize and we all wait in the same line - can you imagine trying to get to a meeting while people are asking about car availability and trying to choose the rental and plan they want? This is beyond confusing - I have never had such slow service at any hertz. Help! read more

This is one of my favorite Hertz locations. My car was ready to go with Gold Counter service when I touched down, and Presidents Circle status was recognized with upgrades. The lot is adjacent to the airport. No shuttle necessary. Highly recommend renting from Hertz when flying into SYR. read more
