Never again! Horrible experience. Reserved a car and waited for an hour and a half past my reservation time only to be told that there was no car available for me! Witnessed a full on screaming match between other customers and endured the slow response from the one employee working. Going to take 7-10 business days to get a refund! Tried to come here to get a vehicle with my car in the shop.. I received a confirmation email, and called to try to finalize the details. They weren't even capable of setting up their phone properly. I figured they might be busy or have issues with their phone, so I called the corporate customer service number to try to get through to them. After speaking to Shanon/Sharon, she was rude and abrasive and did very little to hide her contempt. She did nothing other than transfer me to the same phone number that I had told her several times doesn't work. I called my insurance, and switched to enterprise. Within A MINUTE, a MINUTE enterprise had called me and we set everything up smoothly. If you're looking for a clear example of a place that doesn't give a damn about it's customers, by all means please take notes out of this place. DO NOT RENT FROM SALEM HERTZ. I cannot attest to other local locations but this office is absolutely terrible. They never answer the phone, EVER. They are rude. They are dismissive. My car was damaged and while it was in the shop, I had to rent. The rental was covered by the person's insurance who damaged my car. Hertz charged me over $700 instead for 7 days of renting. I had the car one week. I returned the car almost a week ago and I am STILL TRYING TO GET IN TOUCH WITH HERTZ TO REFUND ME FOR THIS RENTAL. They suck. Don't use them. I'll never use Hertz again, no wonder they filed for bankruptcy. read more

Worst customer service ever. Was given a vehicle with 1/8 of a tank of gas. The vehicle smelled like smoke. There was an alert flashing that the coolant was low. We paid a $150 upgrade to a range rover and was extremely disappointed. read more

Recently I have had to rent vehicles frequently from Salem location and I have had great service, always accommodated and the rates have been great for the most part. Only complaint is that you can't join gold card club and earn credit for your rentals without using a credit card, I pay for my rentals using my td bank visa debit card but that is not accepted to sign up for the gold card membership? Makes no sense and should not be part of the reward program for business read more

Hate giving bad reviews but my rental was not cleaned before I picked it up it smelled like cigarettes there was broken glass in the back seat my little sister almost cut herself on also bird poop all down the passenger side and when I went to return the car they unplugged the phones and locked the doors to not have to deal with customers I could see them through the window just not a good experience read more

Would give this place negative stars due to unreliability and poor customer support. Make sure you make back up plans if you try to rent a car from here. They are supposed to be open until 12pm on Saturdays but, without any notice, they decided they wanted to close early on 9/8 (nobody was there when we arrived at 11:30am) which completely screwed over our entire weekend plans. I get that things happen but their customer service was non-existent after the fact, as well, and did absolutely nothing to fix the problem this place created (you can expect the typical "oh we are very sorry, good luck" response from them). I will not be coming back here and will be using the Enterprise on Jefferson in Salem instead. read more

If you need a rental car in Salem or on the North Shore, try to deal with the Hertz on Canal Street. Kind of a sophisticated, small town vibe. If you're in business and you get Frank to help you, you'll struggle with wanting to hire him for your company. He's like some personable, professional, whirring, work ethic poster child (in a good way) who lets nothing slip by him. You'll have your keys, your car and your contract before you know it, and it's a good bet he'll remember your name when you bring it back. read more

I really like this Hertz. They people working here, and the atmosphere in general, is so laid back. I half except to hear Jimmy Buffet blasting when I open the doors. There's all sorts of little signs scattered across the tables and walls that you can tell the employees just print out when they're board and hang, saying the most morning things but in the friendliest way possible. Things like "Paying for a full tank of gas now will make it so much easier when you return the car! Ask about our other great promotions, and have a really wonderful day!!" with, like, Microsoft Word line art of kittens and ice cream cones on the page. There's also a chalk board with has the most random things posted on it. While not super enthusiastic, the employees are a hundred times friendlier than those I've run into at other car rental places, even other Hertz locations, where it feels like they're having the absolute most miserable time in the world and seem about ready to just spontaneously combust from lack of excitement. A Hertz is a Hertz is a Hertz, but at least this one tried to be a little homey... read more

Absolute incompetence. On May 14, I rented a vehicle from Hertz Salem at 8:09am and returned it, per the agreement, 6:47pm on May 17 - for a total of $265.63 (of which I have photographs to indicate such). Hertz Salem misplaced the vehicle (or didn't check it in), for an additional five days, then attempted to charge me $550.42, claiming I had the vehicle, which I did not.  Once I started receiving automated messages indicating the vehicle wasn't returned, I contacted their main customer service and Hertz Salem. I was told that they would not investigate until I paid the full balance of $550.42, and I said absolutely not and would only pay the amount agreed upon of $265.63. This is now at collection and I'm disputing it there as well. For 21 years I have rented from Hertz, I have spent thousands upon thousands due to required travel, and these morons got my privileges revoked from Hertz over $300. Ironically enough, I just rented from Budget a couple weeks ago that cost me over $1000 for an extended rental, that I normally would have used Hertz. read more

Obviously, one has many rental car options, but I can't recommend enough the Salem, MA location for convenience and a friendly and helpful staff. This suburban off airport location is centrally located, easy to find and an easy shot for points West and North from Boston. Having said that, however, if one is not from or familiar with the area, be sure to opt for GPS unless you have WAZE or Google Maps APPs on your mobile device. My experience is that main streets are never sign posted "because everybody knows it's name", and one can drive for miles with only cross streets posted! Give this HERTZ location a try; you'll be impressed! read more

I locked the 1 key they gave me in the trunk of the car, I called snd they told me to call AAA I did my membership had expired...it cost me 97$ to renue my membership to AAA and get same day service..I will NEVER use them again I was not even 10 min away from the shop...so sad!!! read more

Was trying to avoid Lynnway location and remembered seeing this one in Salem. Spoke with Bryan in the am to make sure they will have the car of the right class for me to pick up later in the day. I was in and out in under 10 minutes with keys to a lovely Ford Fiesta. Bryan was helpful and relaxed, over the phone and in person - cannot recommend him enough! Return process was just as smooth, 5 minutes and we were out of there! Will definitely rent there again - thanks Bryan and Michael! read more

This Hertz is very customer friendly. Much better than the Enterprise across the street. The employees are nice and patient and don't give you that sleazy car rental place vibe. They pick you up and drop you off at the shop where your car is being fixed and are overall a friendly bunch. read more
