A lot has changed around the airport, but National continues to deliver the same dependable experience that made me a fan in the first place. Tampa has shifted all rental cars to a separate facility that you reach by shuttle train. The ride takes about five minutes, it runs smoothly, and in the handful of times I have used it, I have never had a delay or a hiccup. It is an easy, predictable part of the arrival routine. National is simple to find, and as an Emerald Aisle member, I still get to bypass the counter and head straight to the garage. I used to be Executive, but I am regular Emerald now, which means choosing from a slightly lower tier. That was not a problem today. For this visit, I specifically wanted a minivan and had my pick of at least a dozen, walking right past a row of SUVs and sedans to get the most boring and generic one with a Florida tag. Exiting the facility and heading to downtown was just as smooth. A friendly agent checked my ID, waved me through, and I was on the road within moments. The van itself was spotless, had fewer than 2000 miles, and ran without a single issue for the entire week. Returning the car was equally straightforward. The signage is clear, the lanes are well marked, and the whole process moves quickly. I had the email with my final receipt before I even stepped back onto the train to the terminal. They offered to put us on a waitlist for one to be returned and cleaned, but we were hoping to get on the road right away. When I asked about other available options, they quickly offered a Volkswagen Jetta--a smaller sedan--which ended up being a perfect fit. The staff handled the adjustment on the spot, completed the paperwork efficiently, and had us on our way in about 15 minutes. The car was clean, comfortable, and turned out to be a great choice for fuel efficiency and travel during our week in Florida. The gentleman I spoke with on the phone wanted to see if I'd like to reinstate my reservation, and of course I said yes. When I arrived early the next morning, I was greeted by a friendly staff. One gentleman showed me to my vehicle, and while I was outside, the same gentleman I had spoken with on the phone (whose name I unfortunately don't remember) came outside just to thank me for my patience and understanding throughout the situation. He absolutely didn't have to take that extra step, but he did, and it really meant a lot. When I returned the vehicle on Monday, I was greeted by that same young man, and he even remembered my name. That level of personal customer service is rare these days. I was honestly a little nervous after reading some of the negative reviews, but my experience was the complete opposite. The lady then starts yelling at me that she will only talk to one person at a time. She yells this at me over and over. So i then tell her back then talk to her and stop being rude. She then storms off and goes to the back area. The man working at the counter next to her then follows her after he helps a customer that was at his station. The "manager" named "Brittany" then comes out and all we want is for my moms information off the screen. We then ask for the ladies name she tells it's Emily and that the mans name is Lewis. Neither of those names fit either of the people. We then proceed to go to the Avis counter and get a car and "Emily" comes out and makes a show out of saying Hi to the gentleman helping us. Very unprofessional. We then find out that her name is Yazra (this may be spelled incorrectly) and the mans name was Lewis. Whoever runs that place needs to either hire new workers or put them through customer service training. Worst experience at a car rental place ever. And to top it off when we got to the car it wasn't even what we reserved.
