I stayed in an Airbnb with this company. This company is a little unorganized in how they manage their properties and cannot take criticism well. I can see from their responses on here that I am not the only one who was blamed for the problems that occurred during our stay. I feel the need to make a thorough review since the response to my review on Airbnb seemed to need clarification on the timeline of when/how things went down. When we arrived, the manager came unexpectedly to take photos of the place before we settled in. No big deal, but thought it was weird that they weren't prepared for us. After the manager left, we noticed the gas was left on and propane tanks were empty on both the fire pit and the grill. We messaged them on Airbnb right away. While we were waiting for a response, we found two propane tanks on the side of the house, so we hooked them up to the grill and fire pit, which is when we noticed the grill was not working. I guess the message about the propane was received (although no response yet at this time) because the manager came back to drop off one tank of propane in which she dropped off by the gate without saying anything. As I saw her car leave, I waved her down to come back because the grill still did not work. She came to look at the grill, and then sent a maintenance person out to us. Thankfully the problem was fixed within 2.5 hours after we checked in. Additionally, the little pool on the property was not clean, the hot tub was low on water (the jets would spray water everywhere unless 3+ people were inside at the same time), and the remote for the light in one of the bedrooms was missing. I know nothing is perfect, I'm a reasonable person. I posted a respectable, honest, and nice review on Airbnb, but simply mentioned the hiccups that occurred. I even left a 4 star review. Their reply was surprisingly petty, blaming us for the problems that occurred. On the public airbnb response, they claimed that me and my guests checked-in early, and if we would have just checked in on time, the problems would have been fixed on time for our check-in. They also said that when the manager came to take photos of the place initially, that's when she discovered the grill was broken. That is not how it went down. She took photos of the grill AFTER I waved her down the second time she came to the place to drop off the propane. The grill took 2.5 hours to fix, and the other details (propane tanks empty, missing remote, low water in hot tub, dirty pool) would have taken quite some time to fix/clean/prepare. Blaming us for "checking in early" is unfair. Whatever problems that occurred would have taken significantly longer than a couple of minutes, especially given the fact that fixing the grill in itself took a few hours. I understand that not everything is perfect, but the fact that they felt the need to blame me and the other guests for checking in early when we literally pulled into the drive way at 2:58-2:59 (check the cameras) is what really got to me. It's not like anything would have changed if we pulled into the driveway a minute or two later. When the manager initially came to take photos, she could have checked the grill, fire pit, pool, etc then, but she just took photos and left. They were simply unprepared, but blamed us for checking in 1-2 mins early as if that would change anything. Judging from their responses, it seems they cannot take criticism well. Criticism is what makes a business better for the future, but they immediately jump to blaming guests which is a shame. Most Airbnb hosts would apologize for the inconvenience, but instead I got blamed for checking in (literally) 1-2 minutes earlier. Edit to add: I was ASKED to leave a google review. Your response still does not address the fact that you actually lied in your response to make you look better. You lied by saying we "checked in early" instead of just saying "we apologize and we will take this into account for the future" like literally every Airbnb host with maturity would do. But instead you blame us for checking in early when actually did not do so. Saying if we checked in 2 mins later would have changed ALL those problems is simply a lie and not true. Your response actually proves my point that you can't take criticism well and are very immature to be owning a business. Please don't blame guests for all of your problems. I've never had an Airbnb NOT apologize for the inconvenience and have never been blamed for checking in 1-2 mins early, which you know is true since you have not addressed that part of my statement. This is the worst business on the planet. Shanan and her team are the definition of discriminatory and felonious Karen's. We booked an air bnb on our move from LA to Vegas with a one night stopover in Yucca Valley. They notified us 2 hrs before our arrival the hot tub didn't work (which is why we booked the space) and offered a nominal refund. I accepted it and they still cancelled the reservation as WE WERE ALREADY ON THE PROPERTY AT CHECK-IN. Why did they cancel on us in 100 degree heat at 3Pm with my service animal and pet in the car? How unsafe is this to leave us with no place to go in the desert? 'Karen' didn't care. She presumed to call the owners to tell them we were trespassing.. and the police came. What in the world? I had a reservation I paid for & living with a medical disability and leaving me and my service animal and dog out in the desert sun was her purpose - to keep us in danger. I don't know about you, but if this is the kind of thing that happens with air bnb and a rental agency, you're not safe with them. Your family is UNSAFE on any property they manage. Do NOT book with Hi-Desert dwellings. They will literally kick you out when you have a reservation based on her mood. The house was clean and smelled great! i know that is such a weird / off comment that it smelled great. But I have stayed at places that smelled like chemicals and just muggy. Not like a home at all. Unsafe hammock at one of the properties broke and caused my friend to fall and suffer a serious concussion. He's vomiting, and can't stand, open his eyes, or do anything, he has to lay down all day to recover. Can't work and a family trip for Christmas is now up in the air. Pending claim with AirBnB to have justice served. Stay away from them. As you can see from the photo, one of the sides of the hammock had clearly already broken before and had been 'fixed' with a flimsy rope. This company deserves less than one star. My friends and I booked an Airbnb managed by Hi-Desert Dwellings last week for Memorial Day weekend. Our check-in was on Saturday at 3pm. We asked if we could check in earlier since we were already in the area, but we were told we could check in at 2:30pm, as the cleaning company still had to get the place up to the new standards due to covid19. Cool, no problem. We get to our Airbnb. The place looked as advertised - nice, cozy, and clean...or so we thought. My friend went to use the bathroom and noticed that the bathroom smelled a little funky. She also noticed that there were urine stains on the toilet seat. We go through the cabinets to look for toilet paper since the roll on the wall was already half-used and see that there was only another half roll. We start to wonder if the place was ever cleaned. My friends and I unpack and go to Joshua Tree to hike. We get back around 8pm and get ready for dinner. After doing the dishes and cleaning up, we realize there weren't extra paper towels available and maybe three trash bags...for the whole weekend. We make do with what we have and get the dinner table and kitchen cleaned up. We all decide to shower before hanging out and having a game night. We go to the bathrooms and realize there's only 4 towels for 6 people. My friend who booked the Airbnb contacts the host and let's them know about the shortage in toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, and shower towels. The host tells him to look in the cabinets, but unfortunately there were none. Each couple ends up sharing a towel. We figured, it's just for tonight, they'll give us some more tomorrow. We all decide to sleep around midnight. We turn in for bed....and this is when things got really ugly. I untuck the blanket to get under the covers and found dead bugs on the bed!! They have to had been there for weeks or even months because it was under the tucked blanket. This is when we realized NO ONE cleaned our Airbnb. At this point, everything that seemed cute and cozy about our place looked and felt disgusting. The furniture looked tacky and bought from a thrift store. The kitchen chairs were tacky and rusted. And after further investigation of the house, more bugs were found on the walls and corners of the room. Nothing about the place felt clean or safe anymore. My friend calls Airbnb and talks to a support representative about the situation. After 2-3hrs of back and forth, the representative tells us that she can refund our stay for Sunday, but since it's 3am and we have no place else to go, we would still be CHARGED FOR THE NIGHT REGARDLESS OF HOW BAD OUR EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN. This was unacceptable. We were able to speak to another representative who was a lot easier to communicate with and sympathized for us and gave us a full refund. However, we still had to leave that night. So at 4am, we packed our bags and left the hellhole Airbnb at 5am and drove all the way home back to Los Angeles. There were no other Airbnbs or hotels available; all rooms were booked as Joshua Tree opened up this weekend. This was was the worst experience I've ever had with any type of host from Airbnb. I do not recommend anyone to stay at any property managed by Hi-Desert Dwellings, let alone let them manage your personal property. They've ruined my first Joshua Tree experience and tainted my perception of Airbnb. read more

This past Memorial Day weekend, me and 5 friends stayed at the Airbnb location known as the Cactus Hole, ran by Hi Desert Dwellings. From the pictures the house seemed cute and quirky but when we got there we realized that it was all bad. The owners said we couldn't do early check-in until 230pm because the "cleaners" were going to be extensively cleaning the house especially due to COVID-19. You will quickly realize why the word "cleaners" is quoted. 1) when we got there, the restrooms smelled really bad. one restroom still had urine residue on the toilet seat 2) both restrooms had toilet paper rolls that were already half used. Also there weren't any replacement toilet paper rolls. 3) 2 lightbulbs in the kitchen did not work (we were warned by the owner about this) however there was a flickering light in the shower (wasn't warned) that made taking a shower very unpleasant 4) the trash cans outside were not emptied out before we got there so it made it very difficult to throw our trash away 5) there were no trash bags inside the house, we had to buy our own 6) there were no paper towels in the kitchen, we had to buy our own 7) one of the bathrooms had washing soap dispensers were empty 8) when we finally took a shower after our long hike, we found out there were only 4 bath towels. We tried contacting the owner about the other 2 towels since they were aware that 6 people were staying at the house. The owner said they would be in the hallway closet however they were still not there. After contacting them again the owner never responded. 9) the chairs at the dining table were either "vintage" or taken from a old classroom because they didn't work and were broken 10) the furniture inside the house didn't match at all, was almost as if the furniture was bought from goodwill 11) to top it all off, there were bugs/insects/flies on the beds in multiple rooms and the master bedroom. Coming full circle to the quoted word "CLEANERS" makes us wonder if the Hi-Desert Dwellings management company even got their cleaners to come disinfect and clean the house. This host was terrible! It's almost as if this house had not been occupied for the past 3 months and the owners decided to open up for booking just to take advantage of Joshua Tree re-opening. It was a traumatizing experience. We had booked this place, rented a car and bought a lot of food to cook during the weekend. When we found the bugs before going to bed (at 12am) we tried contacting the owners but no answer. We were left to contact customer service and around 5am we were finally able to cancel our reservation. In order to get the full refund, we had to be out of the house. We drove home at 5am without any sleep which was very dangerous however we felt safer with that option than to stay at the "Cactus (Shit) Hole". The Hi-Desert Dwellings claims that they "bent over backwards" for us but they literally didn't do anything to prepare the house for our stay. It's such a shame especially with COVID-19 going on that they didn't care to extensively clean up the place like they said they would. I would give them 0/5 stars if I could! AVOID HI DESERT DWELLINGS AT ALL COSTS. Their customer service is crap. It's almost like talking to an automated bot and if something goes wrong they'll either not respond or not take care of the situation. I hope that Airbnb has a full investigation on them. read more

Worst Airbnb experience ever. If you are an Airbnb guest, take my advice and look for another host. If you are an Airbnb host, look for another management company that reflects your values and your property's reputation. Read the many other poor reviews here on Yelp -- if you stay at one of their properties and write a negative review, they will lie about the conditions and use the opportunity to insult you. The location and style of the house we stayed at was really beautiful. But there were many, many dirty, broken and gross amenities that we brought to Hi-Desert Dwelling's attention. Took them 4 hours and my prompting them to respond. They never apologized for any of it, just encouraged us to write an honest review. When we did write an honest review, THEY ATTACKED OUR CHARACTER, motives and integrity. Dirty dishes in the cabinet and wet silverware in the drawers; no ice cube trays; refrigerator stunk; non-working microwave (which they admitted didn't work but didn't bother to put a sign on it to let guests know); non-working light and fan above stove; non-working remote/streaming TV (their listing advertised free Netflix); clogged shower head and non-working electric outlet in one bathroom (outlet in west bathroom was NOT GFCI); a gross, pilled throw on the bed that looks like it came from Goodwill. There are many beautiful places to rent in Joshua Tree, Pioneertown and Yucca Valley that aren't managed by this company. read more

After much research and planning, I was looking forward to celebrating my birthday in Joshua Tree. That being said a friend of mine suggested HDDNB, so I splurged and I rented one of their nicer properties, Shadow Mountain house (~$500 - $600 per night) for 3 nights at around $1.9k total. My friend and I arrived later in the evening at around 7pm and immediately began unpacking my things and checking out the place. The best feature about this rental is the large see through doors on the west side of the property. I noticed the view and then decided to go inside and finish unpacking, however, I realized that the large see through door was not locking and that the latch was broken. I immediately called the management office at around 8:30pm when I discovered this, and I left a voicemail because it was after their business hours. I was terrified for my safety as you can see in the picture that it is an extremely large door and a big safety concern. Not to mention I'm a woman not from the area and paying almost $2k for three nights - this is not something I thought I would have to deal with. The next morning I receive a call back from the property manager and after I tell her several times I understand how the door locks, she still says "If you want, I will send another person to come show you how to close it". I was perfectly capable of closing the other door with a similar latch and I explained to her it is a problem with the broken door lock. A few hours later, a property manager shows up and determines it is indeed broken. Without any tools or any way to fix it, he mentions he will need to have a maintenance person come later in the day to fix it. I gave the green light of course because my friend and I had trouble sleeping through the night and we wanted someone to fix the large door ASAP. What threw me off guard is that he said he came by yesterday and the door was locking fine, which I'm assuming he was blaming me for this issue. I found that to be a blatant lie because the next thing he said was that I shouldn't be worried about the low crime rate in Joshua tree. He said they "aren't concerned with crime and that their cleaners frequently leave doors unlocked." This leads me to believe that it's very unlikely someone checked the door locked before I checked in. Also, another red flag is that I immediately flagged this issue as soon as I came across it. I never even once had a chance to lock this door because it was broken and I did not hesitate to let both property managers know that I was concerned and needed this fixed. When night comes around, I give the property manager another call because it is now 9pm and the door still has not been fixed and no word from the maintenance person who was supposed to come today. The manager picks up the phone and isn't friendly at all - I tell her the issue again and she says that the maintenance person had another problem to take care of today and couldn't get to mine. Even though it was agreed they would fix it today, I respond, "well could you have someone fix it tomorrow then? It is a concern of mine" and she again passive aggressively says well it was working yesterday. How is that an appropriate response for a property manager to a guest? I have already told the two different managers that it was broken when I arrived. She then responds "if you want, we can have someone do it". I don't understand how this is a big ask (or why I am having to ask so many times), especially the price I am paying for three nights and I have already had to spend two nights with a door that doesn't lock and sees through the entire house. It's clear the property manager is trying to avoid blame by placing the blame on me. It is beyond frustrating that she is annoyed at me for just raising my concerns. On the last night, the door was finally fixed. Nonetheless, I was very disappointed in this birthday trip and can't say I would recommend to friends or family. Note: I requested a late check out weeks in advance of my trip because we knew we would be arriving late in the evening, so it is inaccurate to say that these were all offered because of the door not locking. As a woman and minority owned business, with everything going on in the world now, I would think that compassion and empathy for a young woman traveling to a new location, that safety would be a priority. read more

Rented their biggest and best unit Casa Coyoacan and it was a disaster. There was broken glass in front of the refrigerator, bottle tops, and a used juice box inside. Outside their was more broken glass around the pool and grill, a ton more bottle caps around every chair and entry way, solo cup, trash everywhere, and dog poop all over the backyard. There were also nails and staples and the hoses left out and thrown across the yard. The front receptionist was so kind, but the Hi Desert Dwellings manager, Shanan, will absolutely not care and is extremely unprofessional and rude. She called me after the receptionist (not me) suggested that she call us and she answered with the worst attitude as if I was interrupting her pedicure or something. The only thing she offered was to continue to charge us and get a cleaning lady over there the next day sometime when she could find one that isnt "Covid Concerned". Funny thing is we drove around in our car for 3 hours in 115 degree weather with our dogs because she said we couldn't absolutely not be there the same time as the cleaning people even to drop our food off in the refrigerator BECAUSE of Covid. After telling her she never offered another place, an upgrade, future credit or discount for a stay or anything. I had to continue to push back that it was not acceptable for the money I spent and that I would not be staying at which point she tried to still get the money and offer 50% off for the days remaining AFTER I left and wasn't even there. I didn't at all appreciate her trying to swindle me out of my money up until the time we left. Especially when we just got there and immediately told her. We immediately left the next morning and moved to a nicer and cleaner Air Bnb. read more

Stayed at their "Cozy Cabin" location in Pioneertown, and encountered an excessive amount of vermin excrement throughout the property. Found one of the mice rummaging around under the sink while there. I was at the property for less than 24 hours and instead of apologies, the owners responded by belittling me, and tried to blame me for their negligence. If they had shown any sort of remorse I might be singing a different tune, but their responses were utterly cruel and the amount of feces was... disgusting. I recommend you *never* do business with Hi-Desert Dwellings unless you'd like to experience a profound sadness and disappointment in your fellow man. Truly awful all around. read more

HOME OWNERS stay away from this local company. They are mainly a cleaning company, one of their cleaners recently quit and started working for us. The same house she is cleaning for us for $120 they used to pay her $75. They will keep your house booked for peanuts resulting in hi occupancy rate = devastating weather and tear and ridiculously low income for you. They do not care, the more the house is booked the more they make money on cleanings underpaying their staff ... yes they also make a good commission but that is not their core income anyhow. Confronted on this they also lied to us saying they give the cleaning fee away entirely to their cleaners! They lied to us blaming the market and coming up with lame excuses and they do not invest a dime in promotion and marketing. Do not waste your time and trust in this company. They also gave us as reference customers whose income does not depend on rentals, they never used any other companies so they are totally unaware of what's going on out there and all they care is just covering their expenses. read more

In commemoration of the Independence Day, we traveled to Joshua Tree. In the first home run by this host, there were 100 flyflies in the toilet. And I saw two mice. The host has moved to another hostel. It's a house with a private pool, and it's usually $250, but I discounted it for $190. The water in the pool was very dirty and was unmanaged. Worst experience that we have ever had. The company basically cancelled our reservation at the time of our check-in, leaving our family of six with nowhere to stay in Joshua Tree for two nights. There was no offer by the company to compensate us in any manner for our troubles... they simply told us that they were "sorry for the inconvenience." We had made this reservation roughly 9 months in advance. We connected with the company one month prior to check-in and everything was a "go" at that time. On the morning of our check-in the company sent us check-in details and how to access the home. We asked the company if we could check-in 30 minutes early, and the company responded that the house was being cleaned and that we could not check in early. When we finally arrived at the home (about an hour after the designated check-in time), the company cancelled our reservation (via e-mail) and told us that there had been a "mix up" and that we would need to find somewhere else to stay. Yes, that is correct... there was a "mix up." We spent the next two-and-a-half hours on the phone with this company and AirBNB, trying to resolve the matter, only to learn that the house had been sold 3 months earlier, and it was no longer a rental property. WHAT??? Yep, that's correct. And it didn't occur to this company or AirBNB to notify us of this issue, until AFTER we were supposed to check-in. After two-and-a-half hours on the phone, we were finally able to get some assurance from AirBNB that our money (paid over 9 months ago) would be refunded in full to us; however, neither this company nor AirBNB offered anything else, except that they were "sorry for the inconvenience." We were basically left stranded with nowhere to stay on a very busy weekend in Joshua Tree. After two-and-a-half hours on the phone, we decided that we had to drive thru Joshua Tree and the neighboring towns to hopefully find a hotel with vacancy (at 7pm) for two nights that would comfortably accommodate our family of six. We were tired from the day's activities, had not eaten dinner yet, and were very stressed by this situation. Needless to say, everyplace that we stopped was either booked, or didn't have enough room for a family of six for two nights. After three hours of driving around, we were finally able to find a run-down MOTEL that had two rooms with two queen beds each. It was not very nice, but better than sleeping in the car. I would recommend staying away from any properties managed by this company. If they don't realize that a house was sold three months ago and is no longer available for rent, I can't imagine what else might fall thru the cracks. read more

My husband and I along with our 18m old just got back from a stay in Joshua Tree! We rented from Hi-Desert thru Airbnb and wow, we had an incredible experience! We stayed at the Mañana Mesa and everything was 10/10. It was absolutely spotless when we arrived and had every possible amenity we could need for meals and having a comfortable stay. Communication was also great which made checking in and out so easy. They provided us with a guide book upon arrival which we referred to so many times. Traveling from so far, you never know what to expect upon arrival with rental properties. I was so thrilled with how helpful both Jessie and Shanan were during our stay in Joshua Tree. The house was perfect, exactly as pictured. They were so helpful, we even considered purchasing a property of our own and asking them to manage it. BUYER BEWARE: Arrived in the property in the middle of summer with the A/C not working for almost 24h. The company offered to reimburse only $60 on a $600 reservation. Short sighted mentality and not impressed by their sense of ethics. Best to book through Airbnb that way you are dealing with a larger more professional company. Since for some reason I couldn't respond to the misleading comment from the manager below, I'm adding it to my comment here: Do you know that trick when companies charge a low nightly rate but then somehow the total bill works out as almost double the nightly rate due to all sorts of arbitrary fees? tax, but then also "service fee", cleaning fee, "booking fee", "processing fee"... maybe I should also get charged a "key fee" for receiving a key, and a "communication fee" so that I can communicate with the property manager? In any case somehow all of these added up to almost double the nightly fee: so $600 for a total stay. My request was simply for you to reimburse me a more fair amount of my total, as opposed to a palsy $60 given that 24h of our stay were pretty miserable. The fees that you choose to add are your own, determined by you, so while technically $60 is half of one night, it is 10% of the total amount you charged me. I explained to you that switching apartments is not a satisfactory solution due to the great effort for my parents both of whom are over age 75 and who were exhausted (not least because of the heat). So your so called helpful solution is at greater expense and work to me, while all the while you are telling me the work will be done within the next few hours. What I find the MOST suspicious about this is that you'd be willing to pay the cleaning fee twice ($75) for this apartment plus the one we'd be moving to, rather than just give me an extra $60, which works out as cheaper for you and is what I'm asking for. The fact that you had to pay $800 for the AC (especially when it's 90 degrees at night) is not my business - that is the cost of being a property manager and you definitely do not get brownie points for that. Lastly, this incident aside I am deeply unimpressed by your poor level of service - only one kitchen roll and two toilet rolls for a family of 4, no dishwater tablets and no kitchen detergent to wipe surfaces. Despite the architectural house and expensive furniture we got the cheapest of dishes, utensils and condiments (think Dollar General). For a small business claiming to be high end and with big ambitions I must say I'm sorely unimpressed by your ways. read more

It's interesting that it seems like all of the reviews are either 1 or 5 stars. I don't necessarily doubt the 1 star reviews, but our personal experience was great. Our trip was a last minute overnight stay. I felt the cleaning and booking fees were a little excessive for a one night stay. However, the money spent for the property itself was more than reasonable. I only wish we could have stayed longer to help absorb the agency fees. I chose the least expensive STR that allowed a one night stay with our fur baby. More than me just being cheap, I really wanted to see what the bottom of the STR market had to offer. I wasn't trying to tempt fate with a potentially 1 star experience. Quite the opposite. I was trying to show my desert hesitant wife how beautiful the desert can be. My wife fell in love with the desert because of this AirBNB. We're never going to move to the desert, but it's a great place to visit and unplug. read more

Perfect weekend for a group of 6. (Even had an early check in; lucky me!) Kitchen had just about everything needed; from coffee, cooking oil, filters, pots and pans, etc. (we brought our own seasonings for our food) Restrooms had hand soap, body wash, shampoo & conditioner, towels, I think I saw a blow dryer too. Toilet paper was also provided but brought extra just in case. Watching the sunset was a perfect view while on the lounge chairs. As the night got cooler the hot tub made everything better. The propane for the fire pit was low and I messaged them to let them know and right away they responded and brought us one. (Little did we know there were two extra ones on the out side of the house near the ac, wow!) Theres an outdoor grill as well, perfect for grilling burgers and salmon during our stay. Would recommend to any and everyone. (Kid friendly!) Thank you for accommodating my weekend stay. Would definitely come back, and/or check out more of your hosted air bnb's! read more
