Absolutely love this place!! I've only been twice so far but each time the staff is so welcoming, friendly and helpful. I see Hannah and she is the absolute best at what she does. The first time I went for a haircut and tone and she made my hair feel brand new. This past time I did a full color and cut and she did amazing per usual. My hair always feels so soft, bouncy and healthy when I leave and it stays that way for a while. So this place has really become a hit and miss for me. I love the actual salon, it's very nice and clean inside. Everyone there is very sweet and friendly, especially the owner Jenne. My issue is with the service. I've brought my kids here a couple times before for haircuts without any issues, we just made our appointments for whoever was available first to cut their hair. We all walked away happy with the haircuts each time. However, the same couldn't be said for myself. It had been a long time since I had gotten a hair cut. Even longer since I've had any color, my hair was essentially virgin hair. I was making a big change and going from very long hair to short. I originally wanted to see Jenne but she is, understandably, not taking on new clients right now because she's so busy. It took me a few weeks after that to decide that I didn't want to wait several months for a cut I was ready for now, so I booked an appointment with whatever stylist was available. I had to cancel because he was on the mainland the day I was supposed to go see him. He texted me about cancelling, and when I texted him back asking when I good time would be to re-schedule, he never replied. I rescheduled with another stylist who seemed to have nice "after" pictures of her client's hair on Yelp. When it came time to do my hair, the second stylist was very friendly of course, and went ahead and did my cut no problem. For my color, I wanted the one I chose but as a balayage. I was concerned about what it would like like when it faded but the stylist worked out another color to go underneath the one that would fade so I would get a nice caramel color. The stylist had to leave several times to make more bleach because she kept running out. I asked for balayage but the highlights went all the way to the root. The color in the back was a hell of a lot brighter than the rest of my head. Ok, I'll roll with it I guess. Not 100% what I wanted, but it looked okay, especially after my hair was curled. What annoys me now though, is that I didn't discover that some hair by my neck had the color starting right smack in the middle of the strand when the color goes to the root everywhere else. I only saw this a week later when I was straightening my hair instead of curling it that day. I really think the stylist curled my hair to hide mistake, and she talked like she purposefully made the hair on the back of my head brighter, so I could style it differently to show more color depending on my mood. For almost $500, I think I should have walked away with something better, and the stylist should have been honest about messing up. I tried calling the salon again to ask if Jenne is yet to take on new clients. I explained what happened, and wanted to see if she could do a color correction for me (or whatever it's called). I was told I'd get a call back from Jenne but never did. :( Unfortunate because, for the most part, I do like Hi-Lites. I'll try them one more time to give them a chance, otherwise I'll have to find a new place to get my kids and my hair done. I've attached a picture of the hair with the color starting in the middle. I've been here three times now and every time I have booked with Skye. Their website has an online booking option which I loved. The first time I went here was when I needed to get my hair done for the Marine Corps Ball. I booked a service after Ulta had cancelled my booking and I was not disappointed. Skye did a braided bun updo and it held up for about 14 hours! She did such a great job that I booked another appointment to get highlights and haircut with her too! Again, I loved how amazing she made my hair look and feel. She gave me the biggest confidence boost. I booked with her to get a highlight refresh a second time and I'm hoping to book with her at lease one more time before I move off island! EDIT: I absolutely hate my hair now! All the curls fell out since yesterday so I decided to straighten it today, and it is so choppy I hate it. And no matter how much I straighten it it will not lay flat! He didn't thin the bottom at all! Now I'm embarrassed of my hair and feel like I should have waited till December when I went home to see my normal stylist to get it cut. I want to cry right now I can't do anything with my hair now! This is awful! I saw Takuji Takahashi today for a cut. I was super nervous because I've only let one person touch my hair since I was 13, but he made me feel so comfortable. I had my hair done back in August and let me tell how much I need to. Looking at the before and after pic says it all. I got my luscious locks done by Nanea and she is the ONLY hair stylist I've ever had that made me so comfortable while doing my hair that I nodded off in the chair. She doesn't make you feel ashamed or ridiculed for having not gotten your hair done sooner. I've been to salons where they talk down and lecture you, rather than educate. I told her what colors I was looking to have in my hair and she was able to customize it to where it would compliment me, rather than wash me out. I'm super fair skinned at the moment so pretty much anything might make me look even more pale than I already am. During the entire process, she takes the time to walk through all the steps so that you don't miss a beat. She also gives you explanations as to what and why she is doing what she is. At the end of it all, she gives you recommendations for products to use to maintain the color, healthy texture, etc. My color still looks amazing after the past few months! I'd hands down tell anyone and everyone who wants to find a long-term hair stylist (i.e. not someone you go to once, then never again to keep getting different peoples work) to make an appointment with Nanea and let her work her magic on your hair. I've had my hair done by three of the amazing stylists here. Kanaia is incredible and meticulous. I've seen her a few times for cut and babylites. My hair few out beautifully with her work. When she was unavailable, Patrick was awesome and gave me a great cut. I skipped adding color because I was so happy with the grow out. This time Abby worked some color magic and made my mermaid hair dreams come true. I loooove how it turned out!! She left it nice and long only trimming the ends just like I hoped. Also, the scalp massage was just what I needed. Thanks, girl! Highly recommend any of the three. Oh yeah, fine, the salon is cute, well lit and clean. I am a huge fan of natural light for haircuts and this place has giant windows with perfect lighting for the perfect cut. Pricing was reasonable. $175 for a cut and full highlight. You know you need a haircut whenever you spot a pair of scissors (or two) and wonder what it'd be like to pick them up and just start snip, snip, snipping away. But since I don't have the best track record when it comes to cutting my own hair, I thought it best to make an appointment and make one quick before my appointment became a remedial course of action, rather than a simple cut. As I perused Yelp trying to figure out the best hair salon for my needs, I found myself continually coming back to Hi-Lites Salon. If I had to be honest, I think the main reason for the choice was due to how close it was to home. However, I also appreciated the fact that their prices were affordable and their website gave prospective customers a glimpse at each of their stylists and what they specialize in. I ultimately chose Takuji for my appointment because with a profile that boasted twenty plus years of experience with clientele in Japan, L.A., and Hawai'i, I was definitely intrigued. I arrived about ten minutes early to my appointment and was quickly checked-in by one of the staff members who' d been taking a break outside of the salon. She had checked my temperature and then let me know that I could take a seat and that Takuji would be with me shortly. Apparently, Takuji had been running a little late that morning, but fortunately for me, I had the day off, so had no issues at all. But the staff was very attentive while I waited, and even salon owner Jenne had come by to ask if I'd been checked-in and if I wanted a water while I waited. Takuji himself had even stopped by a couple times to check on me and to apologize for the wait. And before I knew it, it was my turn in the chair. I liked the fact that Takuji took the time to assess the health of my hair as well as what I'd hoped to achieve with the appointment. I had told him that I wasn't quite sure what I wanted--though I do have to note that earlier that morning I was about ready for a buzz cut--but that I wanted something light and short due to how long and heavy my hair had become due to two years' worth of growth. To put it simply: Cousin It had been living rent-free on my head for the past two years and we needed to evict him pronto. I also informed Takuji that I'm really bad when it comes to maintenance, so something that didn't require a lot of styling or frequent trips to the salon would be ideal. He then made suggestions (layers and gradual trims to see what length would be suitable) and then we hopped over to the wash station before returning back to the chair. Now, if you've never seen Takuji in action, I have to say that he's probably the only hair stylist that I've ever seen where each movement or decision is all with intention. He is truly passionate about what he does and really takes into account his clients' needs and how best to showcase their best self through the medium of their hair. I had a few kinks here and there due to how dry and thick my hair was, but rather than yanking at them, Takuji would gently unfurl them until they straightened out and would go back to cutting my hair. He would even check-in with me to see if the length was appropriate, and whenever I'd say shorter, he had mentioned something along the lines of, "I'm worried" or "I'm scared," so eventually, I just rolled with it, and I'm glad that I did. But the cut was just one piece of Takuji's magical work, the second piece was the blowout and/or style. Initially, when he began rolling my hair up with barrel brushes, I thought he was messing with me for giving him such complex hair to work with, but once he had finished styling my hair, I honestly couldn't believe my reflection. My hair was soft, shiny, and full of body, something I can't ever recall happening to my hair in all the years that I've gotten haircuts even if they were far and few between. As we checked-out, one of the other stylists had even complimented the cut and color of my hair (the latter of which I got from my mama), and I left the appointment feeling so grateful that I made the appointment with Takuji. When I had returned home, even my husband--a man who notices nothing--had even commented, "WHOA, BABE!" Overall, I would highly recommend Hi-Lites Salon because it was a really phenomenal experience from the moment I walked in to the moment I left. Whether you're looking for a haircut, style, or even in need of other services (check out their website for more details), Hi-Lites will have you covered. The staff are also friendly and welcoming, and I can only imagine how talented each and every one of them are based on my experience with Takuji. Plus, I appreciated the fact that Takuji didn't reprimand me for taking such terrible care of my hair or attempted to push products on me after my appointment. This place is so cute and Abegail was super helpful! I took my mom here to get a full highlight done for her birthday and this salon definitely didn't disappoint. My mom is probably the worst when it comes to describing what she wants/likes (or really anything in general) but she was listened to with patience and consideration until they were both on the same page. Unlike many chain salons, there's just an overall personable vibe in this salon which makes you feel welcomed and appreciated. The highlights turned out amazing with everything blending together really well, and it's like her hair glitters in the sun, so basically everything you'd want from a highlight appointment. I wish I had a picture but my mom is weird about pictures on the internet, you know how it be. The location has some tight parking (both literally and in terms of magnitude), but there are quite a few options within walking distance that are available. As for pricing I think it's quite fair and accurate to the website. My mom has really thick, straight hair that goes to about the bottom of her shoulder blades with grey hair only at the roots of her hairline. With the full highlight plus grey hair coverage the total was $188 after tax (not including tip). The appointment came with complementary drinks, highlight, grey cover-up, wash (with toning shampoo, etc.), dry, and a choice of simple styling like flat ironing or waves so i'd say it's well worth it. The salon has some great equipment too like no contact heaters and the decor is so aesthetically pleasing there's always something to look at and ogle over. Abby, the "colorist" said she wasn't comfortable doing my hair after I simply said, like I do to all of my new colorist, to be careful because my hair turns orange very easily. She worked wonders to balance out the blonde by adding color-match lowlights to my natural color, as well as a root melt and blonde toning. Talk about great customer service!! Today I decided ramdomly that I wanted a haircut. So I decided to look on Yelp. I reached out to Hi-Lites Salon via Yelp to schedule an appointment. The owner was quick to respond and even though they were closed today the owner Jenne offered to come in and give me a haircut! I am so appreciative. It is always nervewracking to go to somebody new to cut your hair but looking at the reviews and pictures I felt like this was a safe choice. Jenne did a great job cutting my hair and even took the time to show me how to use the curling iron to style it. The atmosphere of the salon was friendly and everyone there seemed happy to be there. She also talked to me about products that I could use based on what I was looking for for my hair and wasn't pushy at all about buying something.
