The small portion steak and shrimp seemed tasty, but the veggies and rice were cafeteria quality at best. Sweet mayo sauce was as good as it sounds, blech. The steak egg roll thing is bland ground beef and has no real Asian food equivalent. The menu is unimaginative, bland and over-priced to the point of being insulting. The beef was tepid and flavorless, as was the shrimp.. the fried rice was in no way fried rice, it was just brown colored rice with no flavor whatsoever. Recently, I've been on the hunt for Hibachi places since Charlotte seems to not have that many places to go at the moment. Hibachi Express & Grill is located off of Tyvola, tucked away in a business park shared by FedEx and a couple of other businesses. Proximity to the airport, surrounding hotels, and the business parks around it...this is a definite food oasis - most likely formed due to the Hornets Arena drama that used to be on Tyvola and then imploded away. The good thing is that the new City Park development is bringing housing and businesses back to the area. As far as hibachi goes, their offerings here are generous and filling.... and super fast. There are a ton of booths here to sit down and enjoy the bountiful meal. I also noticed a lot of door dash folks and people taking out so this is a popular spot. Staff are helpful and the line moves fairly fast (order at the counter and the staff will bring it to your table). I don't remember getting a number, but I think they have some sort of system in place. The hibachi is pretty heavy on the vegetables, which is rare (but a good thing IMO). Of course the "shrimp" sauce is here. I'm a dipper when it comes to the hibachi sauce, but I know people that just douse their plates in it. Overall, I'm glad there's another hibachi place in the city where they are lacking. Would I drive out here just for this particular hibachi, remains to be seen. read more

Consistently good. I've ate here often. This place is always clean, the servers are always nice, they never mess up my order and the food is always good. Is it Brazilian steak house good.. no but your not paying $80.00 a plate either. Most places are hit or miss / only a few items are good on the menu. Not here everything I've ate here has been good and the portion is enough for 2. They also give you a card they stamp , after 10 times your meal is free. It comes with a side of sweet tender carrots and cabbage both tasty. You choose rice , fried rice or noodles. The fried rice is my favorite. I would Definitely recommend this place. Staying in a nearby hotel, I walked over on a warm evening. The first thing I noticed after entering the restaurant was that the A/C was not functioning; it was around 90 degrees inside the restaurant, and employees were clearly sweating. The oppressive muggy interior wasn't helped by the fact that the look and smell was dirty, grimy, oily, sticky, and unkempt. I should have taken that as a sign not to order, but I had already come into the restaurant and was the only person there, so it would have been awkward for me just to turn around and leave. So I ordered a shrimp hibachi combo. While waiting I looked through the condiments to find that they are the cheap, artificial kinds full of preservatives such as sodium benzoate. Even the hot sauce had corn syrup and sodium benzoate listed on the ingredients. No thanks. (That makes me concerned about what's in the food itself.) I took the food to go, not wanting to sit in the restaurant's heat. The shrimp was ok, fried rice was mediocre, vegetables were meager except way too much cabbage and some oddly very sweet carrots. I like fresh and hibachi carrots, but it's as if these had been marinating in high fructose corn syrup; it was so disgusting that I could not eat them and ended up throwing them away so that they did not make me sick. I will give 2 stars because at least the man who cooked the food did so lightening quick (took maybe 2 minutes) and was very friendly, handing me the bag with a smile. I wish the quality of the entire restaurant matched his good nature. Now I watch the clock, hoping and praying that was I just ate from that dirty restaurant doesn't make me ill. read more

I don't know what all the complaints are for. We have been ordering regularly from here for 7 years. My entire family of 6 enjoys the food with never even one complaint. The lady who takes our order knows us and is always courteous. We have complicated orders and they have never once messed anything up. Great food great prices great service. The carrots were soft and sweet which was an interesting side and I couldn't eat the cabbage because it had a bad taste after trying a few bites. I also ordered the steak rolls since it was the advertised promotion at the checkout and it was not worth $5 extra for 3 rolls of a little steak wrapped in wonton paper. I have to give a review because this place does not, from my experience, deserve such terrible reviews for what it is. (Are you looking for authentic, expertly prepared Japanese cuisine? Don't expect it here!) The parking was easy at dinner time, staff was friendly enough, the service was quick and accurate. The price for shrimp and steak hibachi with double fried rice, no veggie, 1 generous portion of shrimp sauce, and a drink was $11, which I thought was fair. I have a big appetite and the portion size certainly filled me up. It was a lot of food for a fair price. The food was good. It was not amazingly fresh like a "real" hibachi restaurant, but I was satisfied with the quality of the steak, and the shrimp was surprisingly DELICIOUS. Rice was good. Shrimp sauce good. But, I do not like a lot of flavor in my food, so I enjoyed the relative blandness. It's probably not good for someone with more adventurous tastes! The cook/cashier allowed my substitution no problem/no charge because he said he wants to make the customer happy. The ambiance of the restaurant is appropriate for the food, maybe even nicer than I expected. Nice enough to look at while you eat but it's definitely casual enough to wear whatever. They had a decent amount of seating, tables and booths, but it would maybe be hard to find a table at a busy lunch time. Silverware was plastic, napkins cheap, little packets of extra soy sauce available. I wouldn't probably take a guest here for a lunch date, but it's good enough for takeout for me when I have that craving and don't want to spend $35 and two hours waiting for it. I just think people who gave this 1 star have absurd expectations for a hibachi express place! There is one TV, password-protected wifi, and restrooms as well. Major Cons: When I went to fill my soda (Pepsi fountain drinks if you're curious, free refills), the Pepsi was out and running completely clear carbonation. He fixed it in under 5 minutes, but I can imagine it would've taken longer at a busier hour (7:00 pm and there were two of us in line.) No problem, mistakes happen. 2nd, the chicken was rubbery. 3rd, and the kicker... The "salmon" was not salmon but some other fish that tasted too fishy. I KNOW it was not salmon, yet I was charged salmon price. When I called them about it, the guy tried to pretend he didn't know what I was talking about. Decided to grab a quick take out dinner here since I was staying at the hotel behind it. The food was average. Had the beef hibachi and a side of egg rolls. The hibachi was bland, but cooked ok. Crab Rangoon's were flavorless with very little filling. It is about what I expected. Next time I would opt for the Mexican place next door or the sub shop. I forgot something very important today. Checking on Yelp before going in here. Since I had not had Asian food for a while, the word "Hibachi" caught my eyes and I went right in. I ordered Hibachi Salmon, and watched the cook cooking my salmon (which did not look like salmon at all by the way) on the iron plate, and I was regretting that I ordered it. They were very thin slices of whitish color fish pieces and did not have any orange or pink color even before it was cooked. Although I was brave enough to try it but it came back right out of my mouth. Yikes! If I were Gordon Ramsey, I would say, "Are you trying to kill me????" I'm sure. I really should have read Yelp reviews first. I usually do that, but today, I only had 10 minutes for this quick bite, and omitted my usual routine. Look, Yelp is getting more and more useful and strong. I am glad I'm one of them to help guide people to better restaurants and shops. It's unfortunate that this area doesn't have a yummy Japanese takeout for the huge business crowd during lunch hours. Hibachi Express will most likely last because sometimes you have that craving and you rather just stomach the dry chicken, steak, or seafood because you can drown it in white/shrimp sauce right? I rather not have to load up my meal with containers of sauce but there is no where else to go on a 30minute break. I'm giving 2 stars because they are quick and efficient in their services, the food is just not something you salivate over. I wish they served the sweet carrots, but instead you will get a heaping portion of bland cabbage and mixed veggies. Not good at all. The only reason I am not giving this 1 star is because I didn't get ill from food poisoning. I debated writing a review at all because I don't want to hurt anyone's business. However, this is a case where the food was so bad it could potentially cause people to get sick. I ordered the salmon teriyaki. The "salmon" did not even look like salmon. It was white. The fish also smelled stinky like it was sitting around for days. The manager at one point came over and asked me how was my meal; and if you ask, I'm going to be honest. I told him the fish was not fresh. He then went on to explain that he just cooked it fresh on the grill. I replied by saying the fish tasted and smelled like it was sitting around for days before he cooked it. Then he explained to me that fish was expensive and that they had to buy it frozen and could not buy fresh fish. I disengaged at this point and he walked away not offering me a refund. I tossed the fish and just ate the white rice. My message to the restaurant is if you don't want to serve fresh fish, then don't offer it on the menu. read more
