I had the best time here kinda late at night last Saturday. We got there at about 10:24pm and were really just happy they were open. The host greeted us and was super nice, she did mention the kitchen closes at 10:50 but that we were more than welcome to come inside just that we should order soon. I really appreciated that!! Our server was nice and attentive and I made sure to order quickly. I was starving anyway so this was all perfect, honestly lol. I tried the sora roll which is: spicy yellowtail and cucumber, topped with yellowtail and avocado, crispy shallots, masago, spring onions, and yuzu miso reduction. THIS WAS FANTASTIC!!!!!!!! It's in a hip neighborhood with quite a few new construction apartments, one rt across the street called Ellos. And, the light rail is a walkable distance. The only access problem was the parking as the parking lane is very narrow. I don't know if there's additional parking for Yama but I drive a truck so I had to back out of the parking entrance. Just drove around the corner onto a Main Street, not South Blvd, n viola there was street parking on the side, no signs for time limits. All good. It was for a late lunch with visiting friends. Atmosphere for this meetup made us stay later than we should have bc I think we stayed til around 4:30pm? Lunch service finished maybe around 2:30-2:45? Felt badly for the person at the reception but he said it was no problem. I hv bn to Yama in Waverly a couple of times n now Yama Loso. Both serve a modern twist to Asian dishes. I love traditional Japanese meals but I also enjoy twists in recipes once in a while. Spicy edamame for starters. Looked great but I can't eat spice at the moment so I can't rate it tho my friends did eat it all up. Ate the sushi rice bowl but w/o the spicy aioli sauce n asked for something else which was on the sweet side. Comforting meal, not overwhelming, just right. Edamame, cucumbers, yellow pickled daikon, tuna, salmon, avocado. A simple lunch was all I needed. Then, the hamachi neck part came grilled, not on the menu but if they hv it they'll serve it tender n juicy. Only reason I left a star out was bc of the parking. Quality food, varied menu and great service! We came on Friday night (J4 Holiday) and sat on the patio. It was a little warm... but that was our choice to sit outside. The patio faces west, so keep that in mind if you plan on dining outside. They had an IPA on draft (which is unusual for a sushi place), so that was a good start. We started with Sea Salt Edamame ($7) and it was okay. They were a little tough to break open. My bride ordered the Yama Sushi Bowl ($25) and absolutely loved it and ate every last piece of rice. I went with the Totoro with no eel sauce ($19) and Maguro Nigiri ($10) and they were both excellent. Service from Ashley was outstanding! We will be back. read more

My first time at Yama LoSo was a 10/10 experience! The restaurant is nicely decorated and such a vibe. Our server Kali was attentive, knowledgeable and funny and her recs were spot on. We ordered the Ebi Shumai, Spicy Crispy Rice, Totoro roll, Waverly roll, Matcha Passionfruit Cheesecake, and the assorted Mochi. I didn't have a bite that I didn't love! The Shumai was perfectly steamed. The crispy was nicely crunchy and had a nice kick. The Totoro roll is perfect for any salmon lovers, it was fresh! The Waverly was hands down our favorite of the night, so much so that I ordered that and the Crunchy roll to go! It was spicy, crunchy and delicious. And to end the night with the Matcha cheesecake was the perfect ending. I thought the passionfruit would be too sour but it was very complimentary and not overpowering and the cake was smooth and the perfect texture. The mochi was also great! The bento box has a good assortment of different things to try in sushi, nigiri and sashimi, all of which are great if also a bit standard. It also has a ginger salad that, while the salad base is nothing special, is given a dressing that really brings it up. The service is good as well. Avery was attentive without being overbearing, and I never ran out of anything I needed or got lost in the menu. If you're looking for a quieter place, this may not be what you want, but I do enjoy the techno-sushi style this place takes. read more

The appetizers were good - we tried the edamame, calamari, and the shrimp shumai was incredible. I had a roll, Kyuri, wrapped in cucumber that was super fresh (3/5). I also had the snow roll that was increíble (5/5). This was my favorite roll!!! The tequila drink that is spicy it was amazing! I started with the Harumaki (spring rolls) and spicy edamame, both of which had incredible flavor. For my entree, I got the Niigata roll and a tuna roll. It was fresh and flavorful, and the Niigata had the perfect amount of spice. Yama Loso was a fun spot to meet with a friend on a random Tuesday. It wasn't too busy and we didn't need a reservation but I could see it being a very popular spot on a weekend. The decor/ambiance is very cool and I noted to my friend that they were playing a lot of Dua Lipa and other pop hits while we were there but not to the point where my friend and I couldn't hear or had a hard time talking over it. Our server was EXTREMELY attentive, to the point where we wondered if he was flirting with one or both of us lol. I knew I wanted a lobster roll but asked our server for his opinion on what to get for a second roll. He suggested a LoSo roll which was delicious and mildly spicy. I've attached a photo of my rolls in this review. The roll closest to the end of the table was the lobster roll and the other roll is the LoSo roll. I thoroughly enjoyed my rolls and found them to be very filling even though they seemed a bit smaller than the rolls at other sushi restaurants I've been too. My friend got the chicken teriyaki with a side of rice and stir fried veggies. They gave her a generous portion to where she gave me some and still had enough to box up to take home. Our server also boxed up the leftovers for her which was a nice touch. Our server also let us sit and chat in his section for about an hour after settling the checks and got us fresh drinks even though we were done eating. My husband and I were in town for a basketball tournament and decided to try Yama Loso (on valentines night). We were promptly seated at the sushi bar and proceeded to have one of the most amazing experiences we have ever had. The sashimi and nigiri was absolutely amazing- melted in our mouths. The Wagyu was sumptuous. And the sake was delicious with an amazing variety. And our waitress Bella was fantastic, absolutely adored her. The ambiance was inviting and beautiful. I've been to Yama a few times now for both lunch and dinner, and overall, it's a solid spot in the Lower South End area. The food is pretty good--fresh and well-prepared. The atmosphere is is lovely, calming and relaxed. II especially enjoy coming for lunch and ordering the bento box. It's a nice, well-rounded meal that always hits the spot. The standout for me has consistently been the service. I wish I remembered her name, but the waitress I've had on multiple visits has been absolutely incredible--attentive, kind, and just overall great to interact with. While it's not one of those places I'm constantly craving or feel I have to return to, it's definitely a nice addition to the neighborhood and a welcome break from the usual bar food in the area. Took my mom here for sushi for her bday. Yama is relatively new to the Charlotte area and I wanted to try new sushi since there isn't much good cheap sushi around. (Not saying their sushi is cheap) Upon entry all the staff were super friendly and courteous. Well attentive and provided good service. Order: sea salt edamame, crispy Brussels sprouts, baked mussels, lobster roll, Morrison roll, snow roll, Totoro roll, eel hand roll, spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, and chicken yakisoba. Most of the rolls are self explanatory such as the basic spicy tuna, spicy salmon and eel hand roll. The lobster roll was probably my favorite; it had tempura lobster and asparagus, topped with poached lobster, avocado, yuzu creme, and black tobiko. The Morrison roll had tempura shrimp, topped with seared filet mignon, masago, spring onions, and spicy aioli. The snow roll included yellowtail, tuna, salmon, avocado, and masago wrapped in soy paper. I wasn't a fan of the soy paper but it needed the soy paper to make it white like snow. And lastly the Totoro roll had spicy negi toro (minced fatty tuna) and cucumber, topped with salmon, spring onions, eel sauce & truffle oil. Overall the food was tasty. I had book a reservation last minute because it was a last minute choice. Although we couldn't be seated early, we just end up sitting at the bar where they do offer full service. The service was good. Nice waitstaff. The food was okay. I had the kyuri roll and it was delicious. It's definitely more like an appetizer versus a main course. The yakisoba noodles were dried, no flavor to it and some of the chicken was hard to chew on. I wouldn't come back. This is one of those places you check out once and that's it. read more
