Visited Hickory House in early April 2025. Outside the establishment you could smell smoke so I went in hopeful the food taste would match the smell. Unfortunately the food wasn't what I would consider "smoked" at all. The ribs were thin and had zero flavor. The brisket was pulled/shredded (?!) and also had no smoked flavor. The only saving grace for both of these portions was that they weren't dried out. The best thing I had to eat was some rib eye which you could tell was cooked over an open flame and tasted fantastic. Fantastic find in Aspen! Was looking for a breakfast spot after viewing the Maroon Bells in Aspen. A local ranger said she only eats at the Hickory House and gave us directions! We spent too much time at the Bells and had lunch instead! Wow! Incredible value and so much food! Had the ribs lunch... 5 stars, bonus mom had pulled pork sandwich 5 stars Took some brisket home to hubby! 5 stars. If in Aspen, this is a must for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Mediocre at best. Got the ribs, a very small Caesar salad, and the pulled pork. We also ordered the onion rings which didn't come until after we paid our check. Our server was ok but I'm pretty sure he forgot to put in the onion rings and blamed it on the kitchen. The ribs were fine- not anything special.. their bbq sauce was ok... nothing memorable. The Caesar salad was 2/5 at best and the portion was incredibly small for $7. We only came here because the places people recommended in downtown aspen were a long wait. Im 100% sure I was sold someone else's food that was eaten and returned. i would leave negative 5 stars on this place. I've had issues here before with food quality , but today I ordered 8 smoked wings to go and I ate three wings and when I picked up the 4th wing to eat it there was an eaten chicken wing under my wings. I took it back and asked for the manager, i told him what happened and he was smirking and had a big smile on his face, so I told him he should be apologizing not smiling about it. and I asked for the owner. he said he was the owner and I was surprised that the owner would treat a guest that way so I said "you're the owner!" , I guess I don't have anything else to tell you then. id just like a refund, I'm disgusted and I lost my appetite. he gave me the refund and told me not to come back Several times yelling it trying to make a public scene as though I was the issue and not him or his establishment. The milkshake flavor of the month does not actually reset on the first of every month, but rather when the restaurant runs out of the past month's special ice cream. How this place has positive reviews is beyond me. I've been living in Aspen for over a year now, and have gone to Hickory House a few times. The first couple of times were fine. But today, we learned they no longer do the weekend brunch menu and when we asked about it, our server was more than annoyed with us for even asking. Flies everywhere--I get that it can't be helped when you have the doors open but they weren't helping the situation as all the tables around us sat dirty. The table that we were seated at was sticky and unclean. The Bloody Mary we ordered was inedible, I took one sip and it had the texture of tomato paste. Like straight up gel. The Smoked Salmon Benedict had no flavor, was ice cold, the eggs were not runny. The only thing I could ingest while there was my greasy sausage links. I could feel myself getting diarrhea as I was sitting there. We had to ask for water and coffee twice. We watched other tables around us get frustrated with the service. There was a child running food. A child! I get that times are tough and you want to pay children a little less, but children are straight up gross and don't wash their hands, they pick their boogers, just gross overall. On my recent visit to Aspen, I stopped in this place for an early lunch. It was before 11:30 am, so they weren't serving lunch yet, but told me they were still serving breakfast. So I decided to go for it. This is a nice cozy place somewhat away from the center of town. The prices are quite reasonable and the food was very good. I had the All American Breakfast, which included 2 eggs, sausage, hash browns, toast and coffee, all for only $9.99. For $10, I was amazed at how filling the food was! The Sweet Potato Tots were more than enough to share between 4 people, especially since our own entrees were filling enough! Banana Cream Pie (A la mode) - BEST PIE I'VE EVER HAD. The other reviews mentioned it was pretty good, but I didn't expect it to be the best pie i've ever tasted! The pie crust wasn't too hard or soft. The taste banana and cream were spot on. It wasn't too sweet. It was PERFECT. I asked how I could get my hands on more of it (I'm from California), but my server said that a local baker makes them. I can't stress this enough but BUY THE PIE. What a wonderful lunch we just had, splitting a whole rack of ribs with onion rings, baked beans, and coleslaw. The sauce has won the worlds best sauce award in the past and it easily shows when you taste it. The spicy sauce version is also excellent. Our experience was good. My wife and ate brunch and had the steak and eggs that we shared. We added a side of pancakes. The steak was a little thin and did not look like it was going to taste good but It had nice flavor. We ordered a side of avacado to go with our biscuit (their toaster was broke) and it was good. I ordered oj and It was freshly squeezed but it was $8 for maybe 8 to 10 oz of oj. Picked up from Hickory House Ribs and got the brisket sandwich with a side of French Fries. I'll just say it, the BBQ sauce is critical for a BBQ spot. If you don't have more than one type of sauce I'm a little suspicious. If you only have one sauce and it comes in a pre-packaged Papa John's-esque sauce thimble, I'm scared. This sauce is vinegary, thin, and way too sweet The fries were bland, extremely under seasoned. You'll like these fries if you like potatoes, not like pizzazzed up potatoes, like if you would just microwave or bake a potato with nothing on it and eat it, you'll like these. The brisket on the brisket sandwich was ok, a little overcooked as I would say 1/2 of the brisket had that beef jerky consistency, definitely not the tender fatty typical brisket you'd expect. Before you get to far into this review let me note that I visited immediately after a rather rambunctious après at the sun deck atop Ajax and I was intoxicated to say the least. I chose a simple Mac and Cheese bowl topped with their pulled pork and House BBQ sauce. It was extremely good and I suggest it if you do not think you can stuff a whole plate of meat into your hole. I'm not a fan of onion rings but I will always eat one or two when the table orders them. Hickory House's rings were the best I've ever had and I couldn't keep them off my mind until we left the premises. I thank our delightful waitress for suggesting them. Not my thing. Restaurant EMPTY. No one else there. We asked if we could sit at another small table & the AHat said no. Take it or leave it. So, we went outside. Had walked in the cold to get here & figured we'd stay. Outside. In the rain. 10' from the buses & non stop traffic. No music. But! They do have umbrellas!! So sorta dry. Please keep in mind this is a dumpy little rib place. It's not like they had reservations assigned to tables!! Our server, Keiryn, was very nice. Dinner was marginal at best. Ribs teenie tiny but ok. Chicken a little dry but okay. Augrautin potatoes, gross! Tasked like they had vinegar in/on them. Could not eat. Coleslaw dripping in mayo.
