Was brought there for Mother's Day. Music was loud asked them 3 times if they could turn it down never did had to yell to have a conversation with sons. Young women close to out table dancing as if in a strip club all on top of each other. I ordered Curry Chicken was served Curry Goat. Was not told until I questioned that is was not chicken and was told they were out of Chicken. But would replace my order with something else. Ordered Cat Fish although it was hot it was greasy. My sons did not get their sides until I questioned the server who then brought out one son's side and told the other they were out. I really struggled on how to rate our visit....so here goes. We visited as a party of 6 for Saturday Brunch at about 2pm. We were the only guests so we were immediately seated. As many have mentioned the music is loud, but we didn't mind because the Pandora station they were playing was great. Our waiter was nice, but seemed like he may have been new. But he did a decent job. Because of reading reviews beforehand we brought our own mimosas, which was a $10 "corking". They do not have a liquor license, but you can BYOB for a fee. Our group ordered a variety of items.....pancake tacos, salmon croquettes, catfish and grits, shrimp and grits, Gem breakfast, wings, Big L breakfast. Everything was EXTREMELY good....once we finally got our food. They told us while ordering, they didn't have the fruit bowl for the Big L, so would credit the meal $6.....no biggie. As I mentioned, we were the only guests in the restaurant and it took about 45 mins to get most of our food. They missed one of the orders, so one in our party didn't get a chance to eat with us. It was finally ready after everyone finished eating, so we just got it packed up to go. Thankfully we had enough food to share, but sadly we weren't even offered a discount for the inconvenience. We couldn't figure out what could have taken so long to prepare our food. The kitchen is in view and it looks like there were 2 cooks. Except one kept going in and out the back door. I won't say that he was smoking, but there was a very pungent smell every time he returned back. If he spent more time in the kitchen maybe our orders would have been complete and quicker. Again the food was DELICIOUS and the prices were fair, except for the corking fee.....but the wait was outrageous. Our party arrived around 5:30pm to celebrate my son's birthday. Three in the party were visiting from out of town. It was a pleasant experience, the food was excellent and the service too. The owner was there too and we had the opportunity to meet him. I will definitely eat there again when I am back in the "D". My experience was horrible. the food was mediocre and the service was also. I should have left when I noticed the cook was not wearing a hair net with long hair. The salt in the salt shakers was so old and stuck that it wouldn't shake out of the shaker. They added 18% gratuity to a party of 2 and charged 3% to pay them. This place was saved on me and my boyfriend's list of places to go for a while now. But I will never come back to this place ever again it's Hidden for a reason. I went for a friend's birthday this past weekend and it was five of us. The server sat us pretty quickly because it was no one there waiting. There was four us at the table and we were waiting for my boyfriend to get there but I ordered for him so we all ordered our food at the same time. But EVERYONE got their food separately. One person gets their food and is almost done before the next person gets theirs is ridiculous. The birthday friend got his first of course and he says his was good (Salmon and Shrimp Alfredo), second person to receive his food got the Curry Chicken with mostly bones and rice, my boyfriend then receives his the Curry Goat at this point is when the kitchen decided to let our server know they can't make two orders because they don't have enough goat. Like really they couldn't inform her before when she placed the order!!!! Anyway our server asked if I wanted the chicken curry instead but after seeing all the bones on my friend's plate I was not with it. So I said no and asked for the Jerk Chicken. Our server clearly told the kitchen Jerk Chicken I heard her because the music stopped midway of our visit and also we were sat right in front of the kitchen. Then comes my food the last one served after everyone is almost done eating and it's the Curry Chicken I let the server know that I ordered the Jerk Chicken not the Curry and the kitchen apologized and remade my order. But honestly by the time I got my food I was ready to go because everyone was done eating and on top of that I was missing rice. My whole thing is I've been a server, bartender and cook back in college like I understand things happen low staff etc etc but when there is a problem with a table I always let my manager/owner who ever was in charge check on my table or they would do it automatically even when there was nothing wrong because they care!!! This is one of those places that seems like it wants to be somewhat nice without knowing what nice actually is. The service was a bit long but standard for how busy it was. The walls and chandeliers are cute in a more cheap-but-nice kinda way. Black ceiling tiles are a choice, but can perhaps work well enough. The flooring, tables, chairs, and table arrangements all seem more suited for a mix of Coney Island and Olga's. The volume level was also a bit much. It sort of has one of those hookah club in the hood vibes that normally just park a food truck outside for the food. The added security very much added to this. Like does this place want to be more like a dangerous strip club or a somewhat fancier establishment? I don't get it. Nothing really screams trashy like having the need for security. All together it comes off very cheap. The food is a perfect reflection of this. Halfway decent chicken dishes given the ol' random sprinkling of parsley to liven up the plate. Choice grade steaks amateurly cooked and topped with a sprig of rosemary. My friend was dumb enough to opt for the curry chicken. It looked like steamed frozen vegetables and chicken mixed with a store-bought curry packet. It honestly looked like school cafeteria food. Another friend had the salmon and that seemed to at least be plated nicely enough, but he complained that it was overcooked (I get that most restaurants do this because people are dumb and always complain that salmon is undercooked when it's actually cooked right.) Another friend got the salmon bites for the table and having eaten one of these myself, I was much less impressed. It tasted kinda fishy and off and solidified my primary instinct that salmon probably not ought to be breaded and deep fried. Lastly, for myself I got the crab cake dinner. These weren't the worst I've had but there was really nothing particularly wowing or even good about these. All in all this feels like the kind of quality you get when you're going top-of-the-line at Walmart or something. The candied yams were the only item I got much enjoyment out of. I think this place just needs a reality check on what it is and what it isn't. This is faux-upscale where appetizers like the flaming wing dings or caulifower bites for $14 fit in great. The salads are all decent for the price. You can get away with halfway decent lamb lolipops for $35; and perhaps at a small stretch, you might be okay spending almost $3 a pop for a nice chicken wing. This is not a place for $20-28 curry entrees or a $42 subpar strip steak. It's very much not the place for $35 crab cakes or VEGETARIAN SHRIMP FETTUCHINI. Weird place. Felt like I should be able to smoke weed at the dinner table or have waitresses twerking in thongs. It'd probably be better going into that direction from where it's at. read more

The rice and peas tastes like plain dry white rice with not even a hand full of peas. The catfish has no seasoning. The fried turkey chop was so dry I could have choked. The steak bites had no seasoning. I tried to doctor up the hibachi fried rice and it was still awful. Well, I came here. The food may look good, but (outside of the turkey chops), it was NOT good. It was about 9pm on a Saturday night. When I got there, there were people in the back room (it may have been a private party) and to the side was a bar with young people there. How are you going to charge me to drink something I've already purchased before I came to your so-called establishment? It's like I'm paying for the same liquor twice. That's not cool! I'm really confused here. Make it make sense, please. Now, for the food, it took about 20-30 minutes for me to get my food. I asked the waitress what her recommendation was and she suggested the turkey dinner, so I had the turkey chops with potatoes (which were diced with onions and peppers). The turkey chop was seasoned nicely. It could've been juicier, though, and I only had about three tablespoons of potatoes. They were ok, but they could've gave me more than that. They were generous with the turkey chops. I also had the flaming wings and a grilled chicken Caesar salad. I didn't like the salad. It had primarily iceberg lettuce in it (not enough romaine) and the chicken tasted sour. On my way home, I almost threw up and my stomach was bubbling. Throughout my dining experience, the music stopped and the cooks were earshot from me. They were cursing like sailors. So unprofessional! I gave this restaurant a two stars, because the waitress was pleasant (one star). My turkey chop was good (two star). But overall, I will not be back. This restaurant has potential, but their prices do not reflect the ambiance of the restaurant. I ordered a simple wing dinner and a lamb chop dinner and my bill was $72 that included a 18% gratuity, which in today's industry, is far to expensive for a restaurant to charge...unless they offer a more elegant environment. I wanted to give a black owned business the opportunity to win me over and consider them for future dining, but they have missed the mark on service, ambiance, and presentation. A note to the owner- Guests should not be sitting at the table waiting for their meal, without the benefit of some type of carbohydrate (e.g bread or toast). If you desire to have a better connection with your guest, your servers should be prepared to answer any questions about your menu items and have a more pleasant disposition, because there were several restaurant choices and I chose to dine with you. After reading some of the recent comments about guest experiences, there seems to be a cohesiveness in regards to your overall service, so this is 1 more comment that will hopefully prompt you to make positive changes that reflect customer focus. read more

I really hate to give this black owned business a poor review but my experience was horrible. When my boyfriend and I arrived, it was empty, we were immediately seated. The server told us when she brought water out that they had no straws. We asked for plastic cups she brought us fresh waters. The table clothes were dirty and noticed a dead Nat in the hand sanitizer that they have on each table for guest. We order lamb chops, Mac and cheese and yams. Although the food was good (the only reason why they got two starts because it would have been one) the mac and cheese was cold in the middle of the bowl. We sent our order bake to be reheated. After we ate, we asked for the bill. The total was like $86 for both our meals and tax and gratuity was added in the total, we paid but when we got the receipt, the total was $6 dollars more than what our original receipt stated. As we were waiting for them to fix the bill, I noticed a roach on the floor to the left of the table and I immediately got up told the manager and waiter and left. They did not offer any type of refund or anything for our experience. I will not be going back here. read more

Had brunch here this morning. The hostess greeted us with "do you have reservations?" We did and we were seated right away. The dining area was dark and the music was rather loud. Someone brought ice water after which we sat for about 20 minutes. We began contemplating at what point in this wait we would decide to walk out. At that point my date told me there was a $150 cancellation fee for the reservation! I was incredulous and wondered why he made the reservation in the first place. We also wondered if we walk out will the card be charged? My date said he wouldn't walk out, he would ask to speak to a manager. Just then the waitress appeared and asked if we were ready to order. I asked if there were menus. She pointed out a QR code on our table that contained the online menu. No one had previously mentioned this, but there was no way I was going to let this waitress leave the table since there was no telling when she'd return. Fortunately I'd looked at the online menu that morning and I picked something I remembered from it, build your own omelet. I asked for a veggie omelet with mushrooms, onion, cheese and spinach. My date ordered chicken and waffles. He was asked what chicken pieces he wanted and he requested a wing and thigh. We didn't wait very long for our food, but the plating was lackluster. My omelet looked stingy, flat and small on a large plate. It wasn't warm enough for me and I started eating right away. My date's plate had a smaller sized waffle with a tiny wing and a drumstick. The waitress mumbled an explanation for this which neither of us actually heard. His food wasn't hot either. The butter didn't melt into the waffle. And there wasn't any syrup, it arrived about five minutes later. Once my date started eating the chicken he thought it tasted sour. He actually took about three bites, doubting himself at first but then realizing his stomach hurt. At this point the waitress told us the chicken thigh was on its way. A good thing from the service side but a bad thing to hear as my date's stomach was bubbling. So we essentially just needed to get that bill and get out of there ASAP. Which was only part of my order the catfish and grits. 10 minutes later my potatoes and eggs. NOTHER 10 TO 15 minutes I receive the French toast that was burned and sent back. Everything came out seperate, bland, or burnt. Out of 6 people 2 never hot food before we left. To top it off I was charged twice. This was before I decided to ordered. Probably around 2:30pm I decided to order the fried cauliflower, 2 chicken sausage patties, buttered wheat toast, and a coffee refill. To my surprise I received my order plus potatoes, scrambled eggs. The toast appeared to be stale and had a whitish texture. The owner assured me I would not be charged for the extra items , but I was . I was charged around $38, that included an 18% tip. The seating was crowded probably because of our reserved tables for the brunch. Tables were to close. Everyone was getting their food at staggered times. As we were leaving, I noticed that some other couples, maybe two were seated on the other side of the restaurant. That area seemed more spacious. I do recommend the fried Cauliflower, it was great. I asked to get the charge off because I didn't receive grits or fruit and she said she could not. My friends and I decided to visit the Hidden Gem on 11/13/21 when we walked in the first thing we noticed was that the music was too loud. We were seated and told that we had to scan the QR code to get the menu and that we could only order from the lunch menu and there wasn't much to choose from so we all ordered appetizers. The wait time to get our food was about 45 minutes to an hour. The food was delicious and overpriced for what you get. If you want a great dining experience this is NOT the place. Fine Dining and a Hole in the Wall for a restaurant is not a good mix and that's exactly what the Hidden Gem is. For a great fine dining experience try going to J Alexander's, Marios Restaurant, Big Rock Chop House you might as well you're going to spend the same amount of money as you would at the Hidden Gem. read more

TERRIBLE ESTABLISHMENT!!! I came in today at 9:10pm I was told they were not letting ppl dine on only carry out. I proceeded to place my order and one employee told another to ring me up who then told her she was doing something else first, so the employee went to find another person to do the job SHE COULD'VE DONE. Nevertheless that's not even the worst part I waited over an hour and still my food was not done ! At this point it's 10:25pm passed closing time. My experience at Hidden Gem walked in and the music was loud to the point I couldn't hear the host , "no big deal". Was seated in a tight spaced area and half of the table was still dirty guest next to us were literally 3" away and it was extremely crowded. It took 30min for a server to even greet us. I wanted to sit in and enjoy myself but do to the circumstances of the entire restaurant, I chose not to but I still wanted to support .... Mannnn it was a 2hr wait and the manager kept trying to offer me a job and speak on how the business needs help in the mist of my date ‍‍‍‍ I mean literally came and sat at our table, ask for my number and begged if I knew anyone could I let her know smh all because in the mist of a small conversation I mentioned I used to cook even after I repeatedly told her I'm not in that career field any longer . I didn't receive my sides and Shakia side was a cut in half potato ‍ like she couldn't even get a whole potato and your charging $75 each (NO LIQUOR/WINE BECAUSE THEY DNT HAVE A LIQUOR LICENSE) it's BYOB btw. The worst part of everything was the fact they only had a 3-4 choice menu at a set price inwhich I wasn't aware of. oh and they didn't use a to-go soup cup or bowl for my lobster soup, instead they decided to use air trays so yeah my whole meal was ruined .idec at the fact the meal was $150+ ok cool but damm can the service match it , the least I could've got was everything I ordered or my wife a WHOLE POTATO .
