I have loved Hidden Star for a long time. On their advertisement it stated $5 "cover fee" which I assumed was to park? As I have gone in the past and paid a fee to park there. Drinks were delicious, everything was reasonably priced, and the service was personable. My husband and I came on a Saturday afternoon. We had been to two other Apple Hill locations with his family that was very busy, as expected on a Saturday. We went to this location to try its cider fights and donuts. I was shocked because there was a crowd but it was much smaller than the other locations. Service was fast and friendly, drinks was great. You are not going to go far by having a sour, unfriendly presence like that woman behind the counter. Why have I come more than once then? Because of Shorty's donuts. Cool place, nice selection of good ciders, good food, great kids area. Lost a few stars because of the blatant money grab of charging for parking. They claim it's to support the kids area but that, for the most part, was there when they got the place. Really pushes the locals out to make way for the apple hill tourists. Love supporting local businesses but prefer to spend my money inside of the actual establishment. I guess will have to wait for the next owners to have a greater sense of community. Came here for the hard ciders. Everything was extremely overpriced. We purchased the flight. None of them were amazing but we figured they would improve at making ciders with time so we reluctantly purchased a few bottles to support them. Ciders weren't bottled properly so the entire bottle would explode upon opening like they were an amateur home brew. Also the taste was completely off so we dumped what little cider was left in the exploded bottles. Upon passing through recently we found that they are now the only orchard that charges for parking. Not sure how they can justify charging for parking considering that they are high in the foothills far from the city. read more

We stopped by since we saw that this place seemed very nice and cute. We were just walking around and taking some casual pictures with the snow. Someone came out and was extremely rude to us, asking if we had a permit to be out there and acting as if we were exploiting their ranch for money. No we're just walking around, sir. This place is expensive - which would be fine for specialty donuts but the donuts are nothing special. I would go as far as saying they are not good and I'd rather go to Safeway in pollock. We got 6 donuts and paid over 20 dollars. Also the girl working the front with the piercing was super rude - maybe that's why we have a bad taste in our mouth. Giving two stars for the ambiance. Hidden Star is an awesome new place to visit in Apple Hill. Some great hard ciders, but with Shorty's Doughnuts taking over the bake shop, you can find the best pies in Apple Hill here. And I've tried them all (30+ year Apple Hill resident). Morgan is dangerous when it comes to making killer baked goods!! I'm pretty sure I'll be putting on 5 pounds this season, attributed entirely to her pies. The owner of Hidden Star is also an awesome dude. Very friendly and always has a good story while you enjoy one of his 10+ ciders on tap that he makes. Also a very fun play area for the kids. Just be prepared for them to get a little grubby. Highly recommend stopping in and grabbing a piece of pie and a pint of cider! You won't be disappointed. read more

Stopped in for cider tasting. The bakery had slim Pickens but the cider choices were good. My favorites were the Pomeroy and Cherries Garcia. The area is under improvements which will be nice once it's completed. They have extra seating these days which is great. read more

A family reunion. A beautiful fall day. A picnic in apple hill. What started out as a storybook afternoon soon descended into a dark tale, one I hope you, dear reader, might never experience. We chose Hidden Star Camino, despite the long drive, because one family member had fond memories from many years of traveling here. We picked up some pizza and arrived around 1pm. When we arrived, we noticed food trucks. We love food trucks but alas, nothing about lunch for sale was mentioned on their website, and they certainly hadn't served lunch all the many years before. https://www.hiddenstarcamino.com We trekked up the hazardous and hilly parking lot to a table but were immediately approached by a woman who told us we could not bring in outside food. Only then did we notice the small sign near the ground, having been preoccupied with strollers and starving children. No problem. We trekked back to our cars and quickly fed our children on the dusty gravel, still determined to enjoy the day. When we re-entered Hidden Star, we made a purchase so that we would be allowed entrance into the play area. Then we were again accosted by the same woman, now quite furious. She unfairly assumed we were playing without paying and would not be deterred from giving us a sound tongue lashing. When she finally took a breath, we explained that we had indeed spent some coin, as requested. But instead of apologizing, she angrily reprimanded us for eating in the parking area, which she said was wildly disrespectful. She was not interested in hearing us out, but finally we just said ok, we understand. Some of us moved on to the cider barn. The same angry woman was pouring but in the spirit of goodwill, we proceeded. Before serving the sister she had already berated twice, she said "LET'S TALK." And proceeded to restate her grievance with us, this time stating that if "the owner was here HE WOULD HAVE THROWN YOU ALL OUT!!" Not sure how to respond to this, we again attempted to diffuse the situation and move on. Two in our party could no longer take the abuse and said so, only to be told that their money was no longer good here. Still wanting to buy pies, cider, etc, we decided to give them one more chance and sought out another employee in the bakery to explain our perspective. This woman seemed much more reasonable, however the angry one was listening at the door and immediately dashed in for a final confrontation. Her excuse for this vile behavior was that the small family business needed to protect their bottom line. Ironically, the woman she continually harassed had promoted Hidden Star and been the reason 9 different families had visited that day. Had we been shown a little grace, we had planned to spend hundreds of dollars on goods. But sadly we couldn't justify supporting this harsh and cruel enterprise more than we already had. This is my favorite farm. The owner started this project about 5 years ago with this place. His expansion is impressive. The kids play area is unmatched, he makes his own hard ciders and has many delicious drinks and has 24 on tap now. Some non alcoholic as well. He has a bakery too. I haven't been because I'm not a dessert person but my friend travels year round for their treats! He said every Saturday night in October he has live music and now he has weekend vendors. The amount of detail, art, creativity and consideration that has gone into this for families in such a short time is insane. Each play structure in his little town is so cute. With a maze and tunnels and plenty of things to climb, we felt great letting our kids run around. I love that it's now fenced off so they are more protected. We saved it for our last stop to let the kids get their wiggles out and can't wait to go back. I've never been on the weekend so I'm looking forward to seeing it get the attention it deserves real soon. The owner is also so friendly and very easy to talk to too. And his dogs are super well behaved and friendly. Hidden Star is more than perfect and super accommodating for anyone who can manage basic respect and follow the rules that are posted! read more

Beat cider bear in California! We moved from the central coast where ciders were all the rage, this spot rivals anyplace on the coast

We first tried Hidden Star at a Farmer's Market in San Francisco so we were excited to learn that the brewery was actually up at Apple Hill during our annual visit. We really enjoy the product, too. That is why it is so difficult to write a review with such disappointment. This company is breaking the law by not enforcing masks for ALL of their workers. There were signs posted, probably out of obligation, but when the employees themselves do not lead by example it is a shame. It is ILLEGAL in California for employees who are in face-to-face contact with customers, ESPECIALLY in food and beverage service, to not wear masks. I have to report this to the state because it is literally a public health violation and it is UNACCEPTABLE! Lone Star: if you have employees who are refusing to comply with the mask mandate, please put them in roles and in positions, or during shifts, in which they DO NOT come into contact with customers. Easy solution. DO BETTER! read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would! The owner of this establishment / or staff (I was told he was the owner) was an atrocious person. Love this spot! The cider tasting room is fantastic, they have about 15 ciders on tap that you can get a glass of or do a flight. And the view off the porch is amazing, especially around sunset. read more

Perhaps this should be a shortys doughnuts review but we were at Hidden Star so here goes. We love the play area but we're disappointed that the one flushing toilet is no longer available and instead there are porta potties. Porta potties can be fine when well maintained. These were disgusting. We told the person inside and were brushed off and told it's the cider places responsibility. That was it. I asked if the cider place was open so I could let them know and it was. However, I'm sure their customers use the bathrooms too. They should have notified the cider people. I went to the cider barn and they were so nice. They apologized and told me they were supposed to be services this morning and hadn't showed up. He immediately got on the phone to find out where they were. I will definitely come back and try the cider but if you don't care about the condition the bathroom your customers are using is in I am not interested in giving you my business. read more

Our family has been going to the orchard for 30 years, Mill View. Our favorite, the applied pies that are 4 inches tall, the dinner plate sized apple fritters, the apple cider and of course the apple cider donuts. Along with friendly people and the smell of baking apples. All gone, new owners since July 2020. Average apple pie, one side burnt crust, apple fritters from your local bakery, no apple cider donuts and the apple juice they said was actually apple cider. When we got home we saw a sticker from San Leandro on the side. Not cider. The hard cider had taken priority, They were not friendly, actually kind of defensive and the good smells from the bakery and kitchen are gone. read more

If you have kids but enjoy your adult time too, this place is it. The playground is so neat and unqiue and my kids love coming here. While they play I can enjoy a hard cider or a donut, and their ciders are GOOD. I'm not usually a cider fan, but I liked almost all of the flavors I tried. It's usually not overly crowded unlike the rest of apple hill that had so many people you just wait in lines half the day. Not here! I doubt I'll ever come to apple hill without making a stop here. read more

Apple pie $22.00. Bought for a friend. He said crust was so thick he needed a steak knife to cut it. Fork wouldn't do it. Apple seed pods were in the pie. Filling wasnt mixed throughly with pockets of seasonings lumped together. He said dont buy him another one. Abels pie is $15.00. read more
