Great coffee, good atmosphere and size, and pretty amazing service as well. The sister and I both had small lattes (which is close to a gibraltar when it comes to balance of milk and espresso, but a little heavier on the milk; all lattes are doubles, size just indicates amount of milk) and they were pretty great. Their espresso blend is from Fantastico but is unique to their shop and despite liking bolder espressos, I really liked their blend -- it was pretty even and full flavour-wise. If you're looking for a well-pulled and well-roasted coffee, the latte is a good way of sampling what they have to offer. When it came to atmosphere and service, it totally complemented the coffee. The place is modern and clean, with a very brightly designed space -- lots of white with light wood and brass accents -- and the service, in typical YYJ style, was eager and helpful and generally nice. 10/10 would recommend to a friend. Will totally visit again whenever I'm in town! PS Home made pop tarts are pretty amazing too. read more

We were in the area and we decided to grab some coffee here. I ordered the honey orange blossom latte. The latte was smooth with a hint of sweetness as I ordered it half sweet. I appreciate the latte art for a drink I ordered to go. Service was fast. Coffee shop was busy with lots of customers. The space, itself, is small, and cozy. read more

Chic spot with a bright space albeit limited seating. Cute merch and nice coffee bean selection, though they don't roast their own beans. Baked goods look enticing -- would've loved to try the strawberry rhubarb meringue if not for dietary restrictions. Pourover coffee -- an important indicator of a cafe's quality -- got the hubby's stamp of approval, with the extra perk of being affordable (less than $6). Not too many non-caffeinated options for me, but the ginger warmer I got was good at warming for sure. read more

Honestly, this place makes the best lattes ever. Hands. Down. The house-made vanilla syrup? Amazing! Since it 'tis the season, I recently had their gingerbread latte and it was flavourful and spicy but not overly sugary, so yummy I've been back to have it again...twice. They also carry a great selection of whole beans from local and artisan roasters - on my last visit I picked up some beans from Vancouver-based modus coffee roasters and they were delicious. Came here on a cloudy Monday morning with my toddler and mom. All tables were taken but we found a few empty chairs. Outstanding coffee and good selection of baked goods. The real charm was a small selection of local crafts and products. Cookbooks (local flavors), handmade cards, and some tshirts. This really gave the place a local edge. Small collection of wooden toys kept my little one relatively happy - this was a great bonus but not to be confused with a "family friendly" space.... Having all three of my kiddos there would have probably been a disaster. read more

Visited from Seattle, and always love checking out coffee places. Coffee and atmosphere was great. It's the type of place that I could totally do some work here! Sort of minimalistic decor, with really nice art and cool coffee products and books. They even make their hemp and almond milk in house. Music isn't overwhelmingly loud either. Two small critiques: 1) The cookie I bought. It was a chai white chocolate chip cookie (sounds amazing right?!). The flavor was tasty and wonderfully thick, but just a little too crunchy, like a stale type of crunch. Made me think, how old is it? If their hemp and almond milk is made in house, shouldn't their pastries be fresh too? Once I got to the center, it got a little chewier which was better. 2) no soy either which is unusual from my experience with coffee shops, and what I usually request. Well for me it was more of a seek and couldn't find. Ordered an espresso and the crema was no where to be found. The "barista" passed me a espresso cup full of black coffee. If he was blind I get it,but he counted out my change so all was good with his vision. Not sure in this competitive market one can screw up that bad. So hide + seek wasn't good to me and I hope you have a better cup. Ps I would have taken a picture of the crema but to no avail, and I searched, sadly there was none. read more

I suppose there's a reason it's the top rated coffee in the area ;) Our barista was very knowledgeable and so sweet... We both ordered the Feature Espresso, but they only had 1 serving left before switching to a new roaster. It took a little while to get the new roast dialed in, so she brought us a couple of Sandwich Cookies to compensate for the wait. What a sweetheart! Both espressos were great, and served with soda water that they make in house. We also ordered a Nanaimo Bar and Poptart pastry, both very good. The space is very open, clean, modern, and peaceful. Stopped in for the first time today. Loved the all white decor and the paintings for sale on the walls. The staff were super nice. I enjoyed my non fat latte very much. Also had a home made pop tart. Super flaky. A little more filling would have been nice. My only drawback was the super tiny tables that barely fit 2 coffees. Not allot of space for two grown-ups to sit and was infact a bit uncomfortable. Other than that it is a great place to check out. read more

This has become a regular weekend spot for us. The coffee is consistently good. It's smooth, not too strong (which depending on your prefer can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your preferences). For me personally, I'd rank them slightly behind Fantastico (even though they serve Fantastico beans) and Township for their coffee, but ahead of Discovery, Hey Happy, and Habit. This speaks more to their style and my personal tastes rather than their quality - which is top notch. The atmosphere is the best part about hide and seek. Kills discovery in this regard (which is the only coffee shop worth mentioning within a 10 minute drive of hide and seek). Absolutely worth a try if you're a coffee lover! Elegant decor, great service, locally roasted coffee, and a very unique lever espresso machine. H+S also offers local pastries, goods, and features local art. The lever espresso machine requires a very skilled barista and is a nod to a classic method of producing some of the best shots of espresso you've ever tasted. Well, after many suggestions from people around town and ending up at sub-par chain coffee shops my brand new wife and I stumbled upon Hide + Seek and we couldn't have been more excited. This is a shop that craft coffee lovers like ourselves have come to expect, except Hide + Seek exceeded our expectation with great knowledge of local roasters/roast selections and above the line guest service. Jesse the barista went out of his way to make sure to make my wife and I feel welcomed and special once he found out we were on our honeymoon. Sad to think I'll be heading back to the states soon and may not see this shop for a long time because we absolutely fell in love with it, and will be there everyday for the remainder of our trip!!! read more

Charming little coffee shop in the heart of Oak Bay! Upon checking in, I mentioned to the barista they had a 5/5 rating on Yelp, to which she was genuinely ecstatic to hear and went on to brag about the rating to the other barista! We had a great interaction and joked around while I placed my order - the barista talked about how she loves being able to have conversations with customers since it helps embrace the true essence of a coffee shop experience! Ordered a Flat White which was made with lovely coffee art! Also tried the Original Old Fashioned Glazed donut from Empire Donuts. Both were very good! I noticed one of the baristas wearing a Hey Happy shirt from the coffee shop at Nootka Court DT, also noticed they had Cafe Fantastico grounds, and of course their baked goods sourced from Empire Donuts. I love how collaborative and supportive Hide + Seek is of other local businesses! Upon finishing our coffee, we brought our empty cups and plates back indoors (sat outdoors on two painted white chairs with a cute small table looking out towards Oak Bay Avenue) and was asked how everything was - awesome customer service which definitely makes you feel like a valued and appreciated customer! Even though the coffee is good the place itself is nothing special. Very little sitting space and usually packed. It is facing North so doesn't get much sun, feels cold and dark.
