We had the opportunity to have lunch at the Hideaway on Black Friday. There were six of us and we were so thrilled by the waiter Shawn and his excellent, prompt service. The food was incredible. I had the Baked Brie with Chambord Sauce, all I can say is OMG, so delicious. Others in our party had French Dip, Clam Chowder (which I will get next time, never saw so many clams and the taste I had was unbelievably good), Hot Wings, Stuffed Mushrooms, Cheesy Garlic Bread with Marinara Sauce. Even met with the owners who came to check on things; Jim and Cindy Caramante were so gracious and kind. Beautiful family restaurant with fantastic food. Went here to get a few glasses of wine and some apps with my Mom when she was in town. The food was great - but you can't go wrong with Calamari and spinach & artichoke dip. However, I will admit the service for us was a bit slow, which for a Tuesday evening I did not expect. I would definitely try it again if I am in town though! read more

I've been here a few times and while the food is decent the service just keeps getting worse and worse. I want to say tht the peach pumpkin soup is amazing. But other than that the food cannot save the service. The service is way too slow- like absurdly slow. Also the servers don't write things down but then forget the orders. I hate that. There is no shame in writing down orders! There are so many little things htat have added up to me just saying meh forget it...but the icing on the cake was yesterday...I ordered my chicken salad melt with no tomatoes. It came, had tomatoes on it. I tried ot pick them off but they were, of course, very juicy tomatoes. Tomatoes juice and seeds all over my sandwich. I had already taken them off my sandwich myself but asked asked to have ti remade with NO tomatoes. Server took it away, and another woman brught it bck out-no joke- about 30 seconds later. Mind you, this was a chicken salad MELT. It got grilled. There's no way it could have been remade in that time...so I opened it back up and of course still found tomato juice and seeds all over my sandwich. I had already picked them off! I wouldnt have sent it back if it was that simple. I mean come on. And then both women completely avoided our table (because they knew....) so I brought my plate up to one of them, showed them all of the tomato guts I was picking out, and asked once again to have my sandwich remade. Experience and meal ruined. by the time I got my sandwich AS I ORDERED IT....I had lost my appetite, and my friend was done with her meal. I hate that. So awkward. If they can step their game up with service, I'd go back. Prices aren't bad at all and the food (when made correctly) is tasty and on par for the prices. On vacation in Old Lyme. 6 of us went to dinner. Food was good: from scallops, sword fish, burger, Fr onion soup. All were good. Even the service was good. No complaints. Avoid this place if you can! The food is usually less than mediocre, the service is ok but the management is rude and dismissive. As really the only sit-down non pizza casual place in town for many years, it has survived, but I have seen the overall quality and attitude decline steadily. I live locally and generally try this place about 1x a year because I forget how disappointing it is. The latest visit produced a baked Brie that came frozen. We sent it back, it was still frozen but this time the lettuce and fruit on the plate was heated to mush. By the 2nd time I sent it back I was done. I've eaten here a number of times. The food is reasonably price but poor quality! The place is dated and doesn't seem very clean. The owners wife obviously doesn't like people or having to be in the restaurant. Bar tender Mike is nice and the drinks are okay. All in all I go there only as a last minute resort. What can I say... You should all hide from the hideaway! The atmosphere will remind you of an '80s ski lodge, with outdated green torn up carpet, and maroon painted walls, which compliment the oddly placed green Christmas lights. If you have back problems please for your own good STAY AWAY! Everything is outdated and disappointing. The staff is very kind, but I simply cannot over look my dry chewy steak which I hardly consider food, there was more fat on it than there was actual meat. Arrived at about 6:30 and shown our table next to a bow window overlooking the salt marsh. Very nice. I was very happy to find German Specialties on the dinner special menu. I live in OL year round and have been going to the Hideaway for over 6 years. I'm not a regular at the bar and only know the owners well enough to say hello. My wife and I dine at the Hideaway once every other week. We have tried just about every item on their menu and have never been disappointed. The food is fresh with ample portions and nicely flavored. People coming expecting a 5 star restaurant in appearance will be disappointed. Though the place is clean the interior is tired. The service is decent but can be sketchy at times as there is a decent amount of waitstaff turnover. However, I don't come to the Hideaway expecting a country club type of environment. I know where to go if I want that type of experience and will expect to pay prices that match that type of experience. At the Hideaway, I know that I'll get a great meal at a decent price. The Hideaway has a friendly and well aged environment- both the interiors and the patrons. I'm 54 y/0 and am almost considered a youngster. Two weeks ago I had their take out - good food. Worst service ever experienced. No sense of urgency. Chef is a cook, not a chef. Medium sirloin was raw (twice). Was not the size as listed... Comped $5.00... big deal! I had to bring it home to cook it... No lie! Scalloped potatoes were smashed cheesy potatoes. No wonder this place has gone so downhill! I will NEVER eat there again OR recommend it to anyone... Burgers were rubbery (seasoned meat is their description... no truth in advertising on that point -the filler had the texture of rubber pellets). Chicken fingers were swimming in grease, slid right through my cousin. My son's baked potato was fine as was the side salad. Food was quite good for the price. I had the pork chops with scalloped potatoes and butternut squash and it was really good! The soup was pumpkin peach and it also was delicious. We were seated within a couple of minutes of arrival and our waitress arrived within 5 minutes to take our orders. She was attentive during the meal without hovering. First time there today. Food was yummy, down-home basic. Loved butternut squash as a side. We are excellent cooks at home and value food prepared well. Hideway was not necessarily fancy, but was delicious and did not disappoint. The staff, especially waiter Mike, were beyond helpful. Ok. We went here for our last anniversary so my parents assumed we had a nice experience and bought us a gift certificate for this years anniversary. We brought the kids for dinner tonight and I wish we'd opted for another place based on the service and one dish. The food was excellent apart from the kids chicken fingers. I ordered clam chowder, my wife had seafood chowder. We had spinach artichoke dip for an appetizer. All of these items were really good. The seafood chowder was a bit vinegar dominate but pleasant. I had the French dip - good but small with tons of fries. My younger daughter had an very good, fresh burger. My older daughter had the chicken fingers but wouldn't eat them (she isn't picky). My wife and I tasted them and they tasted a bit tangy - not quite right. They were deep fried but the meat was whole and looked like the chicken fingers from our favorite Chinese restaurant. We told the waitress that they didn't taste right to which she responded, "Oh?". No manager ever came and she asked no questions about what we thought was wrong. Prior to that service was poor at best. there was another waitress in the section that had an amazing and very funny personality. She clearly enjoyed her job and made her customers feel comfortable. We ended up with a waitress who showed no engagement, pleasure or minimal professional dedication. We had spent a great day at the beach and sailing so we weren't going to let her sour mood ruin our dinner but it unfortunately did. We had four visits from her during our stay. 1. drink orders, 2. dinner order,3 delivery and 4. the check. No drink refills or follow up on how we were doing. The place was pretty quiet apart from a decent bar crowd. Absolutely unacceptable. This place is begging for a restaurant intervention like you see on TV. So much wasted potential! We are moving up the street and this is the kind of place we'd normally visit once a week but unfortunately we will be sharing our experience with others and avoiding the Hideaway. My friend and I decided to meet here because it is a halfway point for both of us and it is right off the highway. The atmosphere is casual/comfortable. When we walked in we stood there for a few minutes before we were greeted, the hostess was not very friendly, not rude at all but just seemed like she was "tolerating" her job and really not enjoying it. I don't know about anyone else but when I walk into a restaurant I would like to be greeted by a friendly, enthusiastic host/hostess, it makes me feel more welcome and not hum drum. The waitress was very nice, she was starting to get busy, again seemed as if she was tolerating her job but very nice person. The bar was pretty busy, it was 5:30 (happy hour) on Thursday. There were a few people eating in the dining room and we chose to eat in the dining room as it was much more quit than the bar. We both decided on burgers, I had the black forest burger, a burger on marbled rye bread with swiss cheese, red onion and thousand island dressing, I added bacon and roasted peppers and onion rings instead of fries, the bacon was extremely under cooked and chewy but my burger was cooked medium as I specified, the onion rings were very good. The food was mediocre, not bad but nothing to write home about. We plan on meeting there again and will try something else and I will provide an update. read more

I ate here today with a friend, celebrating his birthday. Walking it, it wasn't clear where to sit. We wanted to be in the dining room, but no one was at the host stand. The bartender finally came out of the bar and seated us. He was friendly and apologetic about no one being at the host stand. A female server took our order for Black Russian Burger and Stuffed Perch. We both ordered soup Pumpkin and Peach soup, was very tasty. I also ordered a Woodchuck hard cider. I waited a very long time for it, before she came over with it saying, "I rang it in and then...." fading off. "forgot it" was how I'd finish that statement. However, after she delivered it, we never saw her again. Service improved when Jonathan seemed to take over the table, though nothing was mentioned to us. He was very good, he delivered the meals, did the check back, checked again a bit later and came to clear and offered dessert. The food was all good and tasty, and once Jonathan showed, service was also very good. I'd go back, but I'd have my eye open for the female server who didn't provide the best service. It' not OH WOW, but it's definitely "OKAY" and I'd go back for sure. read more
