DO NOT GO TO THIS VET- NOT SAFE FOR PET We took our dog, they took her back without us meeting the vet which was red flag number one. We agreed on 3 vaccines for her, we were charged for 2. I called them when we got home and asked if she had gotten the 3 vaccines or not and they said yes and I need to pay for the third one. I have no proof that she was given the 3rd vaccine, so was not comfortable paying for it. When I explained that I have no way of knowing that our dog received all 3 vaccines because the shots were not given in front of me and my receipt only reflects 2 shots, the receptionists laughed at me. I have a call scheduled with the manager next week, I will change my review depending on how that goes, but most importantly I am not ok with them taking my pet without me having met the vet; that is unsafe. read more

Higgins has been taking care of my dog since I moved to Chicago about 10 years ago. One thing that is consistent about Higgins is the care is consistent. I know what to expect at his yearly check ins, things to be cognizant of as my guy gets a bit older. One of the things I appreciate most though is if I have an urgent question or concern, the staff will happily talk to me over the phone and advise if I should bring my dog in or treat with home remedy. My only "negative" is the cost of care tends to be a bit steep but at the same time, I know my dog is being well taken care of. I'd recommend the Higgins animal clinic team. read more

I have been taking my cats here for 23 years, but no more. A beloved cat who had been seen by the doctors at Higgins for seven years died on November 6. I sent an email on November 7 advising them of this. Then when I received no response for several days, I called to see if they got it and to make sure I wouldn't get any health reminders for him. The person who answered the phone never said "I'm so sorry to hear that." Is it that hard to send sympathy cards to longtime clients? Or to just send a warm note of condolence over email? There are plenty of other clinics in Chicago, and I'll be taking my cats elsewhere in the future. For reference: Scout, the emergency vet service who saw my cat the day he died (they couldn't do anything, as it was a neurological event of some kind that wasn't treatable) sent a card and a plant when they learned he died later that night. Lap of Love, with whom we had an appointment for the next day, sent a card even though they never actually came out, due to his dying in the night. But the vet practice I went to for nearly a quarter century and spent a LOT of money at? Nothing. Not a word. Very poor. read more

They let us know that he would not need to be sedated for it and then they ended up charging us for him to be sedated anyways. So we went in to see if we can be taught how to put this ace bandage fake cast on or if they can try and put it on for no charge since they said it would last two weeks and it lasted four days. They refused to help or do anything without the charge of $500. We've been going here for, eight years with three different pets and spent for sure $10,000 and we are so unhappy with the way we were treated under this crazy circumstance with our injured cat. They are so overpriced which was 100% fine with us if we could count on them but we couldn't at the end of the day! So sad that they have no morals! We had bad experience after bad experience here. We chose this vet because they were within walking distance to our apartment, and one of our roommates said he had used them when he had had a dog in the past. Every time you go in, you will see a different vet. The vets there don't take into account your concerns about what's going on with your pets and no matter what, they just want to run blood tests and such rather than examining the symptoms and working to figure out what may be going on. They make blanket statements without considering your pet personally. You may as well go to the pet equivalent of webmd for all the good it does to go to this place. Our cat experienced an intestinal blockage (which they did take care of, though leaving our poor baby an absolute terrible mess - It occurs to me in hind sight that another vet likely would have cleaned him up afterward) and they recommended we put him on an all wet food diet. We expressed concern about his dental health because he had had issues with his teeth before, and we were told that his teeth were doing "better" (though this vet hadn't seen him before) and that we shouldn't be concerned. In the subsequent weeks, we struggled to get him to eat wet food and his breath kept getting worse, followed by him being sensitive. When we took him back, we were told that his teeth were so bad that one of them may just fall out on its own, and we were told they were going to charge $1200 to remove two teeth. We traveled instead to our hometown to take our cat to our trusted vet there. We had a TERRIBLE time getting Higgins animal clinic to transfer our vet records for our cat back down to our hometown vet. We were on the phone with them multiple times and were told multiple times they sent the records, but our vet never received them. Our vet at home had to reach out to Higgins personally to request them. Our home vet told us that the progression of our cat's teeth absolutely could not have gotten this bad over a couple weeks or months and that the other vet should have seen it. They ended up removing three teeth for just about $600. Since his teeth were removed, our cat's breath has gotten worlds better - I can't even describe - AND he is more willing to eat any kind of food. Our cat went through needless suffering because Higgins was not taking our concerns about him seriously or paying attention to medical evidence that we couldn't see because we're not trained to look for it. Jump forward a bit - we moved back closer to our hometown vet and asked Higgins to send all the records they had for our dog and cat back there. They confirmed on the phone that they sent the records. So we try to make our dog an appointment. Annnnd our hometown vet has nothing from Higgins about him. Absolutely useless, unreliable, and they'll charge an arm and a leg for the inconsistent services they provide. read more

To top it all off the staff is just flat out rude. Update: The doctor's response is full of lies. I requested a 6 day supply. Your staff refused at your direction, that's when the lecturing started. The YELP reviews here speak for themselves. You are a compassionless person and the reviews of your practice demonstrate so. I WAS very happy with the service here. I was a newish - but, a loyal client of the staff and grooming service. I spent on average a couple of​ hundred​ bucks a month in the place - ABOVE & BEYOND​ - The major expenses, So, I would guess a few grand in 180 days or shorter. My puppy was in distress​ from what appeared to be allergies. I called in the morning to ask if my dog could be cleaned up around the eyes where some discharge had come about. I brought her in in the early afternoon only to discover the groomer had left and I made a second request to have a quick look at her eyes. The vets were right there. I was told by the receptionist​ to give​ her an OTC medication and had to ask 4 times in what dosage and how often. Finally,​​ the receptionist​ took my puppy back to the vets who were standing around and brought her back less than a minute later and said give her the OTC and if she gets worse take her to the ER. I knew right there this wasn't the place for me. I posted on social media my need for a new vet and the reason why and received an insulting response to my statement. They even referenced my puppy "as your white dog" - This pissed me off. They had no response and while there might be many good things about this place. It only matters when you really need your vet. Animal clinics are businesses and I respect that. But, true customer service needs to be provided in this industry when it might be inconvenient​ to the business. As long as the customer is willing to pay the price. Which I was. Online statements have real consequences​ - It goes both ways in a real and meaningful manner. read more

The African-American girl is extremely rude. I was told one price on the phone, then upon checking out I was told another, twice as much as the original price. The doctors were nice enough, and the Caucasian girl is nice. Also, we have 5 pets total, 1 is a service dog, and they are unwilling to give any kind of a discount if we were to go there for future care. In response to Humphrey - I used ethnicities because I did not know their names, and it was completely acceptable by society's standards. The review was written prior to meeting with the manager, and yes, an adjustment was made which was appreciated, since I was told one price, than charged another. The question regarding multiple pets was for any possible future visit to your clinic, and albeit not at all common in Chicago, it is in several other states in the country. Everywhere in Chicago is too money hungry and greedy to give any kind of multi-pet discount, or discount for a legitimate service dog. I will be sure to take my 4 pets and service dog to a veterinary clinic that appreciates the business, we will not be back to yours. For the record, my dog is not aggressive, which was proven when at the clinic, it was an unfortunate, circumstantial situation based off of fear. read more

I was first introduced to Higgins through my foster dogs and was so thoroughly impressed with them that I started bringing my cat here. Both Dr. Quarrels and Dr. McReynolds are fantastic and have always made sure I know what's going on and offer lots of advice when I encounter a new issue with a foster. The techs are all amazing, they shower my cat and fosters with love and I'm always comfortable dropping them off with them. I saw a few complaints about their billing but coming from both a pet owner and foster perspective, I feel they don't over charge and are very up front about the costs of additional tests, procedures, etc. read more

All I can say is stay away from this place unless you can get some kind of guarantee that Dr. Roberts and/or vet assistant Melissa will be exclusively handling your veterinary needs. I have nothing but good things to say about these two. It was because of them that we recommended this clinic to friends and neighbors in the past. About a month ago, we had to take our pup to Premier ER where it was determined that she possibly had IVDD. This preliminary diagnosis came with a recommendation of strict limitations to her movements (basically crate confinement) for six weeks along with a myriad of medications. About three weeks in, she was doing much better and started to get her personality back. During this time, we noticed her nails were getting a bit long and she was due for a grooming appointment. We contacted Higgins to discuss this and were told to bring her there for a nail trim but the full groom should wait. We took her in on 4/8/21 for the nail trim and got a bordetella vaccination while she was there. When we got home from the visit and took her out of her carrier, we immediately knew something was wrong as she was exhibiting signs of pain and acting as though the three weeks of improvement had simply gone away. We contacted Higgins immediately to see what might have happened during her appointment that could have caused this and were astounded by the response we received from the vet tech. Apparently, our pup was not holding still for the nail trim so, under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Mistar, the vet tech placed our 9 year old dachshund who was in the midst of recovering from a spinal cord injury in a headlock hold (vet's description not mine) while another individual lifted her from her belly to trim her nails. Let me say that again...instead of informing us that our pup, who was midway through her recovery from a spinal cord injury was not responding well to having her nails trimmed and recommending we come back later into her recovery, Dr. Mistar, instead decided to place an animal recovering from a spinal cord injury in a headlock hold to trim her nails. Consequently, we are now back to square one and have to begin a new six week treatment plan, to include harsh medications, and crate restrictions on our pup. This experience has hands-down been the worst experience I have ever had with a veterinary hospital. If all that wasn't bad enough, Dr. Mistar had the audacity to contact us today 4/9/21 feigning concern for our pup all the while defending her and the vet tech's actions while claiming they did nothing wrong and our dog's re-injury may have occurred simply because she was stressed. If you are unfortunate enough to encounter Dr. Mistar, you will be much better off postponing your appointment or going elsewhere. read more

I have take my cats and new puppy to Higgins for years now and they have always been so kind, patient, assured and careful. They have been compassionate when we had to put two of our cats down and even sent sympathy notes home. Their behavioralist Adele helped us to get our cat to stop peeing in the house after a long period of doing so. She is fantastic! We recently got a new French bulldog puppy and they played and snuggled him for at least 20 minutes before the exam. I love and trust the doctors and team at Higgins completely. read more

A) Sometimes when your neighbors are raking up piles of leaves and setting them on fire, you like to do the same to cash. C) Your toilet is made out of gold For everyone else, Higgins is an overpriced, low-rent animal clinic with doctors who try to upsell like car salesmen. They're pretty enough that you'd think they've been deployed by the sales department of a major pharmaceutical company...hypnotizing you with batting eyelashes as they hand you invoices for overpriced tests that reveal nothing, then claiming more overpriced tests are needed. If Higgins wants to be the city's most bougie vet, act the part. I want dim purple lights, a Moet bar, sleek black leather furniture, and little chimpanzees trained to give foot massages in the waiting room. That would be a good use of Higgins's outrageous billing. If I'm going to shell out lots of money at the vet, the last thing I want in return is modesty. I go here because all my paperwork is here already and i don't feel like switching. Having given that glowing preamble...here is my review: It's not awful. In fact, it's very clean. Spotless. The staff is midly friendly, the receptionists are usually friendly and they have a wide range of appointment times to handle most schedules. They even give my dog a "celeb" entrance because she tends to not like other canines...so that's a nice touch. I just have a problem with feeling like I'm getting ripped off all the time. I consistently have to decline services I deem "unnecessary." I know MOST vets are like this...but it's like, yeah...a lot of money for "routine" stuff. It makes me irritable when my dog's visit...is more than my doc visit. They guilt you into thinking you are not being a good doggie parent. It angers me. One time, as I dragged my poor, sick little pooch in after 3 days of continual "sickness" they tried to convince me to leave her overnight. I said, "will someone be here to let her outside?" They said, "no." I replied, "well what good would that do to leave my dog who gets sick every hour at a place where she'll be in a cage all night?" They looked awe-struck. HELLLLLLO? But, that is just my rant on vets in general. Higgins is pretty legit. I've just become educated on what the dog needs, and what she doesn't really need unless she is sick. Higgins could have been so good. Right around the corner from me. A nice building, seemingly nice staff. But Higgins is not good. I won't be taking my dog back here, or any other animals I might happen upon in my future. I've heard of bad bedside manner, you wouldn't BELIEVE the bedside manner at this place. Not to mention the PRICES. My dog was 5 weeks old and very sick... throwing up, shaking, the whole bit. I rushed her over to Higgins, worried sick, where the vet told me in not so many words that my dog was going to die and that was that. Oh... but I could do a $600 test to SEE if it was parvo, but all in all she was pretty sure it was, and dog was a goner. Not only that, but she went on to tell me how she sees dogs die of this all the time, and it really wouldn't surprise her. Thanks for the info! I walked home from that place with my puppy wrapped in a scarf in my arms DEVASTATED. I mean, I don't even know how I put one foot in front of the other. The vet literally looked at us and said VERBATIM "I wish i had some better news." and up and walked out of the room. Well guess what, 3hrs later, puppy was fine. Better than fine. Romping delightfully with her toys. I was willing (I still have no idea why) to let this go. I was not willing to pay $700 to get her spayed. I did some price checking and found a place near my work that would do it for around $250. I called Higgins to see if they would reason with me... maybe lower the price a bit. Not only would they not do it, they were absolutely incredulous that I would even ask, and were rude about it. My final decision to remove my dog's records and not go back was based on the fact that this place is ALL about money. I mean it's like dealing with the freaking New York Yankees business managers just trying to get some shots for dog. They will upsell you on every last thing you can possible conceive, and seriously i'm here to keep my dog healthy, not to run a million tests etc. etc. If I had to say something positive about Higgins, I would say that I appreciate getting reminder emails about when my dog is due for shots. Called and explicitly requested a full de-claw for our cat. This place confirmed they did in fact perform this complete service. Fast-forward to today - the faux doctor decides to pull a bait-and-switch by telling me fully de-clawing a cat is "inhumane" and goes against her beliefs / feelings....so this animal hospital discriminates against customers who simply choose to have their cat's claws fully removed. Needless to say, I found a cat doctor in the city who wasn't mentally ill and scheduled service. If this review rings any bells, you probably read something in the news a while back about a cake. The best part about this story is that none of the staff / faux doctors / morality police had any issues with the fact that the cat is a a specialty-breed....but taking the claws?! GTFO! The service here used to be great. Those times have changed. All the good vets have left and the service level has plummeted. I call them on friday to get a prescription filled. The tech said she would have to speak with the vet and get right back to me. That was at 3pm on friday. On saturday afternoon I realized they hadnt called back so I called again to find they had already closed for the day. So I left a very irrate message, disgusted with the level of service and that I expected a call first thing monday morning. No call on monday. So I just called now asking for an office manager, to be told no one available, but they would take my number and have one call back. I said forget it, I am taking my business elsewhere. Two unreturned phone calls with the promise of a third. I think not. Too many choices in this city to deal with this crappy service. read more

My puppy hurt his leg over the weekend, and in my search for an affordable and reputable vet to visit and get his leg checked, I stumbled across this gem of a clinic. The staff were all wonderful to interact with and eager to help us help our puppy. The first visit was free, which is excellent compared to some of the emergency vets in the area (152 dollars for an initial exam alone), and I will definitely be back with my puppy and other pets in the future. The vet was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave him a full exam; I just wish that she would have come back to the room after the initial exam to answer some of our questions, both about our dog's condition and about his general care.
