High Grace used to be Johnny White's, a 24/7 watering hole beloved by many. It's still 24/7 and there are still folks in the bar at 5 am having a good ole time. The early morning crowd are a bit rowdy, but the hip-hop music is always bumping so I just go with the groove as I walk on by towards the Mississippi for a run. I finally decided to drop in on a Friday afternoon for a drink. The bartender was an absolute sweetheart, and he was playing some killer '80s tunes in honor of Southern Decadence. I soaked it all up while admiring the funky décor, which included an homage to Johnny White's, a crow in a top hat, a Voodoo King Doll, and dollar bills on the wall. Happy Hour is daily from 8 am - 3 pm with $5 drink specials. I ordered the Lavender Lemonade - a happy hour special. It was tasty and refreshing. I regret that it took me so long to come here. I walked into High Grace one afternoon on a whim. I walked by, and it seemed like people were having a good time in there. When I went in, it was very welcoming, and the bartender was very quick to serve me. I tried their specialty, lavender lemonade with some gin. The drink was amazing, both taste and strength. One of many shotgun style dive bars on St. Philip. Close to Pat O's. This used to be the old Johnny White's (RIP to that great bar). Not much has changed other than some new branding. The inverted Nike logo with the slogan "Over do it" is clever. Really great bar tenders. It' s not as cheap as it used to be. The bathrooms are abysmal. It has a Touchtunes juke box. My main complaint is that the music is always so loud, you can barely hear the person sitting next to you. It's weird to see Malort on a bar menu and their Michelada (which is fantastic) is called the Chi-town Michelada which makes me wonder if there's a Chicago connection (cursory Google didn't reveal anything). read more
