While in New Orleans for a conference, my group and I stopped in looking for a place to have a few drinks. From the moment we walked in, the experience felt uncomfortable and unwelcoming. I was briefly recording outside when the door staff told me no videos or pictures were allowed inside the bar--totally fine, no issue with that. Once we walked in, the bartender immediately told us we needed to buy drinks if we wanted to be there. That was already the plan, so the comment felt unnecessary but we brushed it off. Things escalated when one person in our group was simply texting on her phone. The bartender lowered the music and yelled over the mic that no pictures or videos were allowed. We were not taking photos or videos at all. Meanwhile, the door staff continued staring at us as if we were doing something wrong. If they didn't want our business, they should have simply turned us away at the door instead of wasting our time. Overall, the staff came across as rude and overly aggressive for no reason. The atmosphere felt tense and uninviting, which is not what you expect when visiting a new place. Plenty of other bars nearby where you're treated kindly--this just wasn't one of them. read more

This place was one of the bars we hit after we had dinner during the Mardi Gras festival. Cool goth bar, I had never been in a goth bar before but it was perfectly fitting for New Orleans and it had an eerie vibe to it but in a cool way. Please not you are not supposed to take pictures inside and my husband almost got us in trouble for doing so, lol. The guy was pleasant though who told us no pictures allowed. But don't feel so bad anymore after seeing all of the pictures other people got away with. I wonder why they don't want pictures in such a cool spot but I'm sure they have their reasons. Drinks were fine and the bartenders were awesome. It's very dark in this place but colorful at the same time. Overall it was a cool vibe. read more

Okay, this was my first time coming to The Dungeon, but my friends and even my husband have been here many times. Operating since 1969, The Dungeon is an icon in the circles I orbit. It's a tiny metalhead bar with some outdoor space that has a small water feature, an outdoor velvet-lined coffin; you know, for photo ops and a small dancefloor area. I don't drink alcohol but I did get a Sprite, which was very good. But the reason why I feel compelled to review this place is how the literally saved the day. We were on a girls trip and spent about half an hour here consuming our drinks, taking pics and chatting. We left around 10-ish on a Friday night and headed back to our Air B&B. About a third of the way back, one of my friends realized she left her purse at The Dungeon. The attentive door staff found my friend's purse and kept it safe until we were able to arrive and claim it, thus saving our girls weekend! I thought The Dungeon was a cool joint to begin with, but they really propelled themselves to superhero status with how they saved our trip. Bravo The Dungeon- well done!. Everytime I come to New Orleans I always visit this place. There two stories. No cameras or recording allowed inside. The drink selection is very limited. The major of items I asked for they didn't have. So we had to stick to generic over priced drinks that were watered down. The service was slow. The music was nice. Seating was extremely limited so you're standing shoulder to shoulder with people. read more

Came here on a Sunday evening when it was dead so can't say I was able to get the full experience that the Dungeon may have to offer, but had an overall good time - mostly because the people around were friendly. Everything about this spot is narrow so if you're not into dark, crammed places, why are you here? They don't have a menu so it's kind of up to you to know what you want. I don't drink so I asked the bartender to concoct a mocktail for me - she made a combo of orange and pineapple juice. My friend got a glass of Rumple Minze mixed with Sprite. Together I think our bill came out to be $12 which is not expensive at all compared to the New York prices we're so used to. Apparently there's an upstairs but it was closed as they didn't have enough traffic to open the extra area. read more

Unique hidden dive bar, with a jukebox that only requires $1 per song. It's a very small, narrow and dark bar. No pictures/ recordings allowed, which we found strange. Restrooms are a joke- don't expect much. The upstairs bar area was closed. The bartender seemed cool but then she screamed at a guy that was either attempting to take a picture or recording at the bar. For what this place is, it does it pretty damn perfectly. I mean, if you like hard rock and metal and dim lighting and skulls, this is your jam. This was one of the last stops of the evening, so I was feeling pretty dang good and got into the metal jams more than I normally would have. Like, YES. The ceiling is so low that someone warned me I was about to hit my head as I was jumping around. Wheeeeee. They don't serve food and the booze selection is limited. It's not about good selection - it's about skulls and red lighting and ROCK AND ROLL. Service will probably laugh at you if you request some fancy drink here. Just guessing. Maybe this used to be a cool vampire bar, but I guess not anymore. Nothing about it is vampire except for the coffin in the courtyard that you can take a picture with. The doorman was rude, and half the bar was closed--apparently the top part is only open Thursday-Sunday, and there isn't any information online that would let you know that, so I was disappointed that I only got to experience about 300 sq ft of the bar. read more

I went "back in the day" when the Dungeon did not open until midnight. I think their hours were midnight to 8 AM. Typical of NOLA, drinks were pricey and once upstairs, you were elbow to elbow - it was tiny and always packed! You could not fit a stage in the upstairs area, and I know there was not live music. I enjoyed the super-divey atmosphere and the punk rock vibe of the era at the Dungeon. It was dark, crowded and it was difficult to see the kitschy items displayed in nooks in the walls. I was really happy to visit the Dungeon, even though we did not make an entire night of it. read more

We came to The Dungeon expecting a unique and edgy experience given its long-standing history in the French Quarter. What we got instead was a thoroughly miserable time thanks to the two bartenders on the lower level who were, frankly, absolute C's. There are rumors of the place closing or the son of the owner taking over. Whatever the case may be, they really need to get their act together because this place will not last with that type of service. After reading other reviews, it is clear my experience was not unique. People have been calling out the same behavior from these bartenders for well over a year, and yet they are obviously still there. And to top it off, my vodka soda tasted like water. Those dumbasses are lucky they walked away with a tip after giving nothing but attitude, ignoring customers, and serving crappy ass drinks! read more

i thought this place was pretty lame. we came on a friday night and it was busy upstairs but not so busy downstairs. and i think the reasoning is because the downstairs bartender totally sucked! there were dirty cups left all over the bar and she spent SO much time at one end just talking to a guy. and then she would disappear to the back area (but i could still see her) and then come back "out" and talk only to this one guy. seriously after 40 minutes of us sitting there, she made her way down asking if we wanted drinks. my boyfriend got a whiskey coke and i got a whiskey sprite. and she was like "what, a sprite? that's so weird, are you sure?" and i was like "...yeah?" so she goes to make them, brings them back and does that bartender straw taste test in front of me and says "it's just so weird, i had to try it. and it's gross" before pushing it in front of me. like, okay thanks for your opinion. The decor upstairs was cooler, but there was very limited space/seating and you're not allowed to take any photos inside. so all things considered, it was totally nothing special and not worth going to. like, net negative experience. read more

My girlfriends and I had had this bar on our list of must go-to's bc my fiancé who has a history with NOLA stemming back decades recommended it. We were super excited to go here. Unfortunately, it sucked. The bartender was a huge b. I wanted to know if they had any signature cocktails and she said "We're a dive bar" in this snarky ass tone. Girl, f'n duh. But you work in a touristy locale and most bars, even dive bars, have signature cocktails. I ordered two vodka tonics with lime, a Diet Coke and sparkling water. The Diet Coke was all water, our drinks were shit. She had a f'n attitude when I said to keep it open and said they hold onto the card. Girl...I wasn't born yesterday. No need to talk to me like I was. She said it like I've never been in a bar in my life, like she was schooling me. Get over yourself. I work in the industry. I am sensitive and appreciative of servers and bartenders and tip accordingly. This girls f'n attitude left me wanting not to tip at all. I almost wrote on the receipt because we heard her complaining about tips to a patron. She was so snotty and I suspect was drunk/on something... Whoever manages/owns this bar needs to do some re-evaluation of their employees. If I treated customers the way she did at my bar and restaurant, I'd be fired. Don't recommend. I spent $41 on two vodka tonics, a nothing Diet Coke that wasn't a Diet Coke because they haven't switched their syrup bag for their gun and was too interested in acting like hot shit to other patrons and ignoring us. My husband and I went in on a Sunday night, and I think we just hit it at the wrong time. When my husband asked the bartender about the history of the place and shared what he had read, she had no idea what he was talking about. She totally blew him off. I found one of the secret doors within the bar, but the space it led to was dark and not being used that night. There's supposedly another secret door that I did not find, and it's unfortunate that the bartender wasn't willing to engage us in the mystery of this place, because it would have made our visit a lot more fun. It's a great themed dive bar, so worth a stop if you come across it. Just be prepared for an experience. Or not. read more

I'm giving this place two stars simply for the decor it's a very unique gothic themed bar with the worst cocktails ever. They were overpriced and I've never known a screwdriver to taste like cough syrup and wouldn't be able to drink it. Another kicker is New Orleans is notorious for not wanting any pictures taken inside their stores and restaurants kind of odd but ok so it's really hard to give reviews on places when you can't back them up with pictures all a person can go by is experience and word of mouth. Maybe beer would've been better but I don't recommend mixed drinks. This place is super small inside so there's not many places to sit so with that being said I wouldn't suggest this place for large groups of for people who like mixed drinks. read more
