I have random days that I just think, PURPLE DRANK! It is delicious. I am not really a daquiri girl as they usually taste too sweet or artificial. Not this VOODOO PURPLE DRANK! I love it so much. Its vacation in a cup - even if you are not on vacation. I need to come here at least once or twice when I am in New Orleans. The staff is always great. Thank you! read more

Always and I mean always a must stop when I am in NOLA. Even if I'm not there to do touristy things, I still need to swing by. I love Lafitte's so much. I mean you can't go to NOLA without getting some cherries and purple drink, amiright? Of course they get crowded but service is fast and good. To me it's worth the wait for a table or a spot at the bar during those busier times. This is a piece of NOLA history that shouldn't be missed. read more

Decided to try out the oldest bar in the US as I have heard stories about it. I got a juicy hazy IPA and my partner got a hurricane . Both drinks tasted great, prices are reasonable. The spot does stay busy so you might have to wait for a seat/table but there is a lot inside. read more

Located in the prime Bourbon St, this is a pretty cool bar with blacksmith shop ambience and known for their Voodoo Daiquiri ("The Purple Drank"). Despite being busy on a Saturday afternoon, the wait was no more than a few minutes. Unlike most of the country, here the open container laws allow you to take the drink to-go, so they serve the drink in a foam cup with optional lid. It was a good amount of drink for $11 before tax and tip, and enough for 2 people to just try a good amount. It is served frozen, so it is meant to be enjoyed slowly. It is not too strong of a drink, so it is a nice little spiked drink to cool off in the heat, just feels a little watered down in certain parts read more

Great Effinn Bar. I feel like this is a local bar that some tourists who like to explore outside of the party scene come across. They have a touch tunes box, they have a live piano performances at night during the weekend and definitely has a great vibe. Drinks are well made and prices are not bad. read more

We stopped by because I'd heard online that Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar had one of the best Hurricanes in New Orleans. If you're looking for a very strong, alcohol-forward Hurricane, this might be exactly what you're after. Personally, I was expecting something fruitier and more balanced. All I really tasted was the alcohol with just a hint of grenadine. It just wasn't my style, so I ended up giving it to a homeless gentleman outside who had a sign that jokingly said he was "allergic to water." He was incredibly grateful and absolutely made my day. Even though the Hurricane wasn't for me, I'd definitely come back. The atmosphere is one of the coolest and most historic in New Orleans, and it's worth visiting for the experience alone. Next time, I'll just order a different cocktail. read more

I made it a point to stop into this legendary spot while visiting New Orleans. I've been wanting to try their purple drink. I stopped in around 11pm on a Sunday night and it was busy. I got quick and friendly service from the bartenders. Of course I had to order the legendary purple drink. It was very tasty. Like a frozen grape slurppee sooped up with booze. A must stop when in New Orleans and every time we do it never disappoints. Fun times are always had here from the friendly bar service you receive along with good conversation with bartenders that will throw in some cool facts about which bricks are original from when building was built in early 1700's. Fun fact: this was a real blacksmith shop back in the days, but was also a front for a pirate (yes, a real pirate), that used to sell smuggled and stolen goods. Nothing fancy about this place just flat out fun and COOL. I love the history of this place and the original details. Music is always going whether a piano being played or music on speakers. Drinks are always served quick and they take cash or card. There is always people hanging out here no matter what time of the night. When we're back in Nawlinz we will def be back here multiple times and I recommend to fellow Yelpers and friends. read more

Lafitte's was one of the recommended bars for our group during our visit to New Orleans. It's almost at the end of the street when walking in the French Quarter, so it was a little far to walk, given our big group. It was a nicely themed bar, and the live music was nice. I did have to put earplugs in. It was also VERY crowded, even on a random Saturday night. I didn't order any food or drinks, probably because of the large crowd. read more

It's been 7 years since my last confession about Lafitte's and I can say I still give it 5 Stars for the best ambiance bar in NOLA, unless you like some good old fashion ribaldry, then I'm sure there are plenty of other places you'll like better. I recommend going at night for the dark, mysterious vibe and some live piano music. Think lots of candles and all pics using night mode on your iPhone, or Blackberry or Pudding Pop (or whatever the latest Android is). They're sort of known for the Purple Drink, which is a slushy drink and that's not my thing, so I stick with the Hurricanes which are really strong and come in their iconic plastic cup. I'd have a stack to the ceiling if I saved them all! I still have yet to feel the hauntings of Jean Lafitte himself, but my guess is he's hanging out in the women's restroom. What else would you expect from a Pirate other than being bad at baseball? read more

Located in the heart of the French quarter on Bourbon Street, this spot has a lot of history of an infamous French pirate from the 1800s. I stopped here midway through a haunted walking tour. It's a simple and kind of darkly lit bar with various seating indoors and out, but be aware that part of the indoor seating has a very high step to navigate. Service was adequate and they had the usual bar selections. read more

Second bar on my oldest bars in America tour is Lafitte's Blacksmith. While no one has an exact date on when it was built, I think they estimate in the 1720s (wow!) but the legend of the bar far more awesome than anything you might want from actual history. Pirate brothers? Check! Pirate booty? Check! Rum? Check! Characters with names like Jean and Pierre LaFitte, and and and RENATO BELUCHE?!?!? Like what??? Renato Beluche will now be the name I travel under. But I digress. I'm giving this 5 stars mainly cause it's just plain awesome. There is nothing elegant here, nothing fancy or any mixology going on. It's big old cups of drinks and some bottles and a whole lot of fun. It was packed in the middle of the day, so I can't imagine what it's like on a Friday night. What a great time read more

One of the oldest bars in America. Kind of hole in a wall, kind of not. I like all the candles they have set up here. They do not have a drink menu and the booze selection is to be desired. They are basically known for their 2 drinks - purple drink, which has a lot of juice base, and something with everclear. I want brave enough to try either. read more

I've been down French Quarter three times now. Out of all those 3 visits this is the only bar I always make sure I stop in. It's dark, mysterious, and just pure history in itself. It's one of the oldest bars in America, technically older than America. Lafitte's predates America and carries nearly three centuries of New Orleans history in its candlelit, storied walls. Whether staying here for the rest of your adventure around French Quarter or just stopping in to absorb the vibe while sipping on their purple drink it is truly worth a visit. read more

Historic bar! Whah more could you ask for in a dive bar? Dimly lit, cheap drinks and friendly staff. It was pretty empty on a rainy Tuesday evening. I had a gin and tonic, which was solid. This place has a great vibe!! We visited during Halloween and it was festively decorated. We went twice to have the purple drinks. One per visit is enough!! They are strong and they go down easy. Go to Lafitte's to get your famous purple drink/voodoo daiquiri! They aren't very expensive ($11) and are quite potent. According to my research, Lafitte's is the oldest structure housing a bar (and not the oldest bar in America, as many believe) so that's a cool little tidbit! The place almost looks themed. This bar was always packed and busy each time we passed by it. We went twice, once on our own, and the second time as a stop during our ghost tour as it supposedly has some haunted history. It's so packed that you can hardly find a place to stand around, let alone sit. Luckily, you can get your drinks to-go in NOLA and it's fun to walk around sipping on your purple drink. The drink itself is frozen, and it does have a grape Gatorade-like flavor. You can taste the alcohol, but it's not so punchy that it's difficult to drink. It actually goes down pretty easy. At first, I wasn't sure if I was in love with it, then it grew on me. By the time I had my second purple drink, I realized I would miss it when I went back home. read more

Named after Jean Lafitte, He was a French pirate and privateer who operated in the Gulf of Mexico during the early 19th century especially around Louisiana. This bar is special. It's one of the oldest bar and technically older than America. It's nice to have this building is still standing. I'm fortunate to have visited, had a cold beer. An overall just a pleasant visit. read more

The bar is awesome look wise. It's pretty cool. Service I got right up to bar and ordered a drink. But the main drinks suck!!! They are NASTY!!! The hurricane is not the normal one that I have had. It was super sour. I had to have him put grenadine to at least help with the taste. The purple drink was the worst of the 2. Didn't even drink it and threw it away. At first it does taste like grape cool aid but idk if they use a cheap liquor or what but after the first initial taste it's horrible!!! So if u go there order what you like not the tourist trap drinks!! And I'd definitely go again. read more

We got to Lafitte on a Saturday night around 8:15pm, and we had no issues finding a table, although it was still full of cups from the previous party. The server came by a bit after and helped clear the cups. You could have placed your order with her, but we decided to go directly to the bar. The live music was awesome, and we loved singing along, but the drinks were just okay. I tried a Hurricane, a Purple Drank, and a cherry bomb. The Hurricane was meh, the Purple Drank was not that bad (although it does taste like grape flavored Motrin), and the cherry bomb was VILE. It's soaked in Everclear I think, so it tasted like antiseptic. Honestly though, it's kind of fun to prank your friends into trying it. And I believe it was 3 for $2 or something like that. read more

Great historic bar near the French Quarter. This is a must when in the Big Easy! Not sure if they have a piano bar every night but on this Friday, they had a great pianist singing a lot of good classics. What a great bar man. It's way down on the south end of Bourbon away from all that hot mess. Lots of history at this spot. It's supposed to be haunted by the ghost of the Pirate Lafitte, but I didn't sense his supernatural presence on this occasion. It's also hailed as the oldest bar in the country (actually it's not; it's the oldest building that houses a bar...there's a bar in Rhode Island that's much much older). The establishment used to be a blacksmith. You can literally see remnants of the operation inside. And apparently, they got electricity just five years ago, so it retains a lot of its old world charm. They still use candlelight here for illumination, which sets a nice, mysterious ambiance for all the inebriated patrons. Reminds me of the inside of Pirates of the Caribbean Disneyland ride. This night had a guy playing piano and taking requests. Forgot his name, but he was Howie Mandel's doppleganger. It was a fun time hearing him play Hey Jude twice in one hour. He wasn't bad. Went back with our little group for a second time and there was an even better performer at the piano. I guess one of the biggest draws here is the performer takes cover requests, and it turns into a nice sing along for everyone. For some reason, everyone loves the Pink Pony Club because it was played twice on back to back nights here. Tip them well, folks, and you'll get to the top of the request queue. Just don't request the Pink Pony Club! Pretty straightforward cocktails and a few ones I've never heard of, including the Purple Voodoo Daquiri that is loaded with Everclear and tastes like Dimetapp. You've been warned. Worth checking for the famous drinks in New Orleans and the architecture of the building but that's it. Arrived 5 minutes before they opened and saw someone working inside. Asked him if they open at 10 like it says online but he said no probably 11-12 very rudely. I went to get breakfast and came back at 10:30 because I wanted to try all the popular drinks here and people were inside drinking. I asked the lady working for the famous drink and asked her what time they opened and she said 10. I guess the guy was having a bad day or he just didn't like my appearance. The drink was sweet and strong. Loved that it was strong but it wasn't for me. read more

I recently visited new Orleans and had to visit the longest running bar in the states. I was not disappointed at all. This is also one of the most haunted bars in the country, built around the 1730's it's old. Inside all the tables were lit by candlelight which added to its haunting lure. Their specialty is the purple drank. It's a frozen ever clear cocktail. The only way to describe it is it doesn't taste grape but tastes purple. Iykyk lol. You cannot taste the ever clear, however it packs a punch! Dangerous combination lol. There was a performer singing and playing the piano by candlelight in the back of the bar which was nice and he was taking requests. Definitely worth the visit if you're in New Orleans! When you're in the Big Easy, and you love places with a story, naturally you make your way to what is possibly the oldest structure to be used as a bar in the US - Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar. Founded between 1722 and 1732, Lafitte's def has a history. If you time your visit right you'll get the full piano bar experience. There's exposed bricks and beams everywhere. A hodgepodge of wooden chairs helps give you a rustic feel. Absolutely LOVE the brick fireplace in the middle of the main bar area. For the drinks they offer up a full bar, a selection of draft brews, and a couple premixed cocktails. My husband opted for a couple brews, while myself and our friend both chose a couple premixed cocktails. I had the purple drank, which was a daiquiri slush drink. Our friend sipped on a good ol' hurricane. Meh, nothing too special there. I would have loved to see a more sophisticated cocktail menu given the history. For me, being in a bar that boasts being the oldest "bar" in the country, a few of the touches felt out of place - such as the very modern jukebox and the tacky printed "Keep off the fireplace" signs. I just wish they had embrace more of a vibe versus a mishmash. I did find the "sign a brick" in the bathroom to be more than a little disappointing and disrespectful to such a historic place, but I'm sure they're just trying to embrace the vandalism at this point. When in New Orleans, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar was worth a visit. I'm glad we popped by during the day, so we were able to take in the space versus being packed in with a crowd. Can't say I'd make my way back, but it was worth a visit. read more

Came here on a Friday night and was greeted with a old time vibe that the name alone only begins to giveaway. But the stone and brick atmosphere doesn't totally do away with the bourbon street charm. I recommend going with their signature frozen cocktail, the purple drank, it basically just tastes like a grape soda slushie. Can be a little cramped especially around the bar area, but if anything you can pass it off as being cozy. Staff was super friendly and would be glad to stop back here for another round anytime. read more

I may or may not have pretended I was sipping butterbeer in Hogsmeade while I was here! This place seriously looks like something straight out of Hogwarts (or, you know, just very old European--which, to me, automatically means Harry Potter). It was such a cute little spot, and apparently, it's haunted! I found that out from a friend who went on one of those ghost tours. I stopped by in the early afternoon in mid-December, and it wasn't crowded at all--just me and another couple. It was the perfect place to sit down, rest my feet, and cosplay...er...take pictures. Their signature purple drink is so good! It tastes exactly like a grape popsicle, but it's got a serious kick. It was a bit on the expensive side (I think around $11), but it's strong enough to feel worth it. All in all, this place is a fun little spot to check out! read more

Legend has it that Lafitte's ghost is in the ladies' room. Makes sense- a pirate looking for booty. Ok, so 24 of 1806 reviews mention "tourist trap", but both my hard-to-please and authentic former (and best) boss and a former local recommended the place. For that reason, I got a bottle of beer to seem less touristy. The crawfish boob inspector hat probably didn't help. But my friend demanded I get the Purple Drank, so I returned. Was it good? Well, it stained my fingers, dissolved the bottom of the styrofoam cup, and gave me so many ice cream headaches I looked like Freeze from Batman and Robin, so I'd say yes. Between 1772 and 1791, the property was allegedly the smuggling headquarters for loca folk hero Jean LaFittte, the "guy" to see to get stuff like untaxed sugar and coffee, part Godfather-part Better Call Saul. In the War of 1812, he warned of Britain's attack (having turned down an invitation to join them), and his help supplying manpower, flint, powder, and passageways (in exchange for pardons for his pirate ways) made him a war hero. If they didn't want our business, they should have simply turned us away at the door instead of wasting our time. Overall, the staff came across as rude and overly aggressive for no reason. The atmosphere felt tense and uninviting, which is not what you expect when visiting a new place. Plenty of other bars nearby where you're treated kindly--this just wasn't one of them.
