This place has been on my list for a while and I'm so glad I got to try it. I ordered the grilled pork with rice, and I was both surprised by the generous portion and also how beautifully it was plated. The food was flavorful and delicious. I loved how the rice was topped with roasted garlic and the roasted garlic oil. My one gripe is that some of the pork was a bit grisly , which made it a bit chewy but otherwise it had great flavor and smoke. I still think about that meal a lot, and am excited to return to have it again. read more

Ordered takeout and got the beef pho and summer rolls. This is Williamsburg so higher prices are expected. Beef pho was $17 and summer roll was $10 which came with 2 rolls. Broth in the pho was flavorful and good. I like that they separated the broth and noodles for takeout and that they had jalapenos with the basil and bean sprouts. I am super excited about another viet place in Williamsburg! Definitely a bit on the pricer side for pho, but the quality was on point. I have ordered from here three times and got the following items: Bun Bo Hue - I am pretty particular when it comes to this dish, but I can't remember having this, so I don't think this place did my regular go-to spot for bun bo hue well. Summer Roll - maybe this is the place that had questionable rubbery shrimp? Not quite sure, so maybe don't order the shrimp? Shrimp and Pork Papaya Salad - I remember thinking this was a bit on the salty side. Beef Pho - nothing to write home about, so standard, but better than Chinatown places. Pork and Quail Eggs - this is good, good enough that I kept ordering this dish. Salted Chicken - this reminds me of Congee Village Homestyle Chicken, but a little bit more on the salty side, so be sure to have plenty of rice to cut down that sodium. When you walk in, you get a whiff of fish sauce. The dank kind and that is how you know authentic it is despite its modern decor with the neon light. I ordered egg noodles with chicken, forgot the official dish name, but man, it was so good. Broth was rich, noodles were perfectly tender, and so was the chicken. The staff was helpful! Insight about the Vietnamese dishes and can translate our orders and the Vietnamese iced coffee was also delightful (I'm def picky about this. You have to find the right ratio between the coffee and condense milk). Is it expensive? I've also only ordered one item, which was the grilled pork on rice. You have the option for vermicelli noodles if you don't want rice. The dish came with 5 big pieces of grilled pork and pickled veggies (carrots, lettuce, red onion). I very much enjoyed the pickled veggies and wished there were more. It had a strong vinegary taste and it really helps if you're not feeling hungry. The grilled pork was a little tougher than other grilled porks I've had at other places. Flavor wise, it's how it should taste. For an average person, I would say it's enough for one person to eat. Or if you have a bigger appetite, it might not be enough. I've been dying to come here for so long, and it definitely hit ever spot I was craving for this! We came on a Sunday early afternoon, and there weren't many people in there. This is great, because we sat down right away :) rather then waiting an hour+ for a table, especially in that area. They have season menus, btw! We wanted to try their spring rolls but unfortunately it is on their regular lunch menu during the week, and not on their summer brunch menu. Confusing, but I guess we just need to come back! We ordered their grilled rice paper, which was delicious! It's cool too, because they offer scissors to cut rather then ripping with your hands. Light, crispy and good. My sister go their beef Pho, which was packed with beef and I got their street pork noodle soup which was SOOO flavorful, wow. Both soup portions were a great size, the perfect size to fill you up but won't leave you hungry or won't leave you feel bloated and stuff. Their presentation is cute too. We ordered a Vietnamese coffee, super strong and it almost tasted like candy. Their staff was super friendly, and the ambiance/ vibe is cool. Their pricing is pricer then your typical whole in the wall Vietnamese place in Queens, but what do you expect. We're in Brooklyn and it's more of a restaurant. I'm use to spending $8 on a bowl or soup and I spent $15 on mine here. If you're in the area, or a huge fan of Vietnamese food, i suggest checking this place out. read more

I give this place a solid 4.5 stars! We ordered 2 Vietnamese Iced Coffees along with 2 Chicken Phos. I've had Chicken Pho at numerous places but there's only 1 place in Brooklyn that I swear by and I was a bit disappointed that High Lua did not meet that expectation. The flavor and the broth was a bit odd to me and it had a sweet aroma to it which I was not used to. I'm not sure if this is traditional Vietnamese flavor but it came as a surprise to me. Although I did enjoy the newfound taste! They gave plentiful of Chicken unlike other pho places which skimps you out on the meat which I liked. The service was very friendly and nice and I would come back again to try their other dishes. When this was first recommended to me, I made a plan to go with a friend so we could try different dishes. We opted to sit inside even though there were some spaces available outdoor. At this time, the indoor dining ban restriction in NY was eased to a very limited capacity. The available seating includes a long table (picnic style) near the restroom entrance, some seating on the side (there is a corner seat that is very coveted and usually taken) and a table set up next to the bar (where I sat). On my visits, the there was a good amount of take out orders on top of the bar! This spot seems to be super popular during dinner time rush. In addition to the walk-ins, the frequency of deliver drivers that and to go orders almost seemed non stop. For my first visit with a friend, we ordered summer rolls (goi con), fried passionfruit wings, stir fried corn with salted duck egg, and the grilled pork banh mi. Of course we had to get their signature dish Bun Bo Hue (hue beef noodle), which is consists of rich pork, beef bone broth, hint of shrimp paste and lemongrass served with beef shank, Vietnamese ham, scallion, onion and Vietnamese coriander. We also got the ever popular Beef Pho (pho bo) which consisted of beef broth with rice noodle, round eye steak, brisket, onion, scallion that is garnished with bean sprouts, basil, lime, jalapeno. The rolls were packed with lettuce, mint, basil, cucumber, vermicelli and we picked shrimp as the protein and delicious peanut sauce. The wings piqued my interest because I had never seen any other place offer and flavor. They passionfruit fish sauce they use creates a very nice aroma and flavor. They were fresh and crispy. The salted duck egg corn we got because it reminded me of the Chinese flavors and it was quite different than the buttercorn or cheese corn that I get at other Asian restaurants. The banh mi we shared amongst ourselves. The pork was tasty and you just cannot go wrong with any banh mi they offer really. The bun bo hue was loaded and the broth had a little kick to it the lingered after. There is a reason why this dish is one of their specialties because it has it all and then some. Even if you are not a spice fan, this dish will be one you will remember. It is perfect for sharing or if you are very hungry. The beef pho was super flavorful. if you plan to order both, it is better to eat the beef pho first and then the bun bo hue after. Each dish has certain flavor profile and intensity that should be enjoyed individually. For drinks, I opted with the ever popular Vietnamese coffee and my friend got the limonade with basil seeds. There was water available and the servers for the initial visit were on point and so friendly. Two ladies, Suzi and Ribbon were working non stop and checked on us often (in addition to the outdoor diners and packing the deliver and to go orders). At one point, a gentleman with glasses came out of the kitchen area to make sure we were doing all right and asked us how we found out about the restaurant. When I mentioned a friend recommended High Lua, he was both so happy and surprised. Later on, I find out that this person is the owner of the establishment and his name is Kenny. He was working as hard as his employees were yet took time out to greet customers. He apologized it was so busy and he was working nonstop in the kitchen earlier. I felt bad for taking him away from his work but was glad he introduced himself to us and took time to chat. He is very humble and has quite a strong work ethic. Much respect to him. The first visit left such a deep impression on me that I decided to go visit again but this time alone. There were other menu items that I definitely wanted to try. As I arrived, the bar top was again full of bags of food ready for pick up and delivery platform. The corner seat I mentioned earlier was taken of course. I sat in the same seat for my initial visit. The two nice ladies who worked the first time had a well deserved night off and another employee name Chris was working (very diligent and courteous). Kenny was outside the kitchen this time but still working non stop packing orders to go / delivery. I ordered the sausage rolls with peanut sauce, and two entrees (pork bacon and quail egg and the grilled pork over rice. The slow cooked pork was so so tender and delicious. The other pork rice dish was super savory and grilled to perfection. Great food. Excellent service. My compliments to the staff at the FOH and the heroes who handle the BOH operations. I was looking forward to trying out this place in BK when I visited. It was known to be one of the best pho places in the city. My friends and I had some spring rolls and fried spring rolls for appetizers. I ordered the beef pho and it was ok. I'm quite picky with pho, so the pho here didn't really "wow" me. The broth was clean but it wasn't as savory and rich to me. Don't get me wrong, it was not bad though, just ok. The spring rolls and fried spring rolls were good. I do like the rustic interior, vintage design a lot. Service was efficient. Overall, I'd give this place 4 stars. I did see some other special viet dishes like mi Quang (central vn's chicken noodle soup) and would like to try it out next time. read more

Best Vietnamese place I've had in brooklyn. The summer rolls here are very fresh, I would come back just for them. Most places have wilted vegetables or the vermicelli is too dry but the summer rolls here are perfect. The chicken wings were crispy and flavorful, reminded me of Korean fried chicken. The pho broth was clear and wholesome, I could taste the flavors simmered in, the beef was non fatty and good cuts. I really loved the noodles they give you a lot and instead of the usual thin rice noodles these are wider and have a better texture . When I first found this place on Yelp I was surprised that there was a Vietnamese restaurant in Williamsburg! However, I was also hopeful that it would turn out to be legit. When we first arrived at the restaurant my expectations soared when I saw the red stools outside. Those stools are iconic of the outdoor eating scene in Vietnam. The menu is also in Vietnamese with English subtitles - this was a very good sign. We ordered the bo bia (sausage rolls) to start and they were really delicious. This was actually my first time trying these type of rolls. My wife who is Vietnamese suggested them. Essentially it's a sausage wrapped in thin rice paper with fried eggs, tiny shrimp, carrot, jicama and thai basil. Highly recommend! My 3 year old had pho bo (beef pho) and she slurped it down greedily! I went with the classic com thit nuong (grilled pork over rice) and I loved it. It was probably the best version of this dish that I've had in NYC. I can't wait to come back and feast on their Vietnamese cuisine! read more

I gotta say pretty legit tasting Vietnamese food! I'm from DC, so I know real Vietnamese food when I taste it. We came in here while on vacation. It's tucked away in a small section in Williamsburg. The pho rolls were interesting and divine tasting. The fish sauce was authentic. My friends spicy beef noodle soup, did NOT look authentic though. It looked like a pork version of their pho. The chicken wings had a crispness and tangy sensation. The banh xeo needs a lot of work. While all the components of the banh xeo were correct, it came out soggy and not crispy, almost like a pancake. Other than that I would come back if I'm really craving some Viet food. As someone who loves noodles and Vietnamese cuisine, this is probably one of the best spots in NYC/Brooklyn you can check out for a flavorful bowl of noodles. The beef broth was super tasty and clean. Noodles were perfectly cooked. The wintermelon tea was very very freshing, I highly recommend. They changed their menu seasonally so that's why the menu is very simple (I guess). But I personally think they can add few more choices for appetizers or noodles. *COVID Seamless delivery* We ordered High Lúa for an impromptu celebratory dinner. I got bun bo hue with added sa te spice and beef balls, and my friend got grilled pork com. I'll say right off the bat that I have not eaten bun bo hue before; however, I really enjoyed it. The broth was super dynamic with a decent amount of heat (obviously the sa te amps this up), and the noodles were plentiful and chewy. Without adding sa te and beef balls, the dish costs $18 and comes with thinly sliced ham and brisket. I was a little surprised that $4 only bought me 4 small beef balls. The small pour of sa te was an additional $2. My friend's grilled pork was delicious, tender, and full of fresh flavors! I think the restaurant may have forgotten to include the fish sauce dipping sauce though... We'll probably try another Vietnamese restaurant before reordering from High Lúa. But I would definitely eat here again. P.S. High Lúa includes a sauce that is like spicier sriracha. It is amazing! I've been here pre-covid and during covid! This place serves authentic Vietnamese food and the staff is so kind. I have to go back and try their banh mis but I have gotten the beef pho & the bun bo hue. The bun bo hue pho exceeded my expectations and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. During COVID winter time, my boyfriend and I were incredibly hungry from thrifting around the area. We found ourselves back at High Lúa and the warm broth from the pho literally saved us from the cold. I highly recommend this place. Great service, great ambience, and A1 food. read more

My main highlights were below, but I felt that the food definitely hit the spot for the price. - Canh Ga Chicken Wings -- a little salty, but wonderfully satisfying crisp/crunch with a sweet and salty marinade. One order was perfect to share as an appetizer for two people. - Pho Ga / Chicken Pho -- flavorful broth, uses northern style noodles, and tastes nice and homemade to me - Banh Mi Cha Lua Pate Sandwich -- not what I was expecting because the cha lua they used is not the plain kind that I was used to, but it had more spices and flavor because the cha lua was made with it. I do prefer a more savory pate compared to what they used, but that's just me being picky. The baguette was very flaky and delicious. It wasn't too doughy and dense, and breaks off in a bite perfectly. - Ca Phe Sua Da -- definitely made the traditional way, but its made very concentrated. I wish it was served with crushed ice so that it dilutes the coffee more to be drinkable immediately, but you can easily remedy this by just letting the cubed ice melt a little or adding a little bit of water. I'm glad I asked for mine a in a to-go cup, because then I could keep sipping on it as the ice melted after my meal. read more
