My friend and I started with their iced coffee with coconut cold foam, just know that this was by far the strongest coffee I've ever had and I'm a black coffee drinker. It was so good, perfectly balanced with the condensed milk and foam on top. I got the beef Bahn mi and my friend got the chicken, both of them were so tender, flavorful and applied the key rule to a good sandwich, didn't smush all the veggies to one side. We liked it so much we ended up switching halves. The servers were extremely helpful and attentive as well. I found myself at High Lúa the other night before attending a concert at the nearby Brooklyn Steel. I'm not as familiar with Brooklyn as I am with other boroughs, but my brother was with me to spends a lot of time here; he's the one who suggested we stop here. Since I'm always looking to expand my palate for Vietnamese food, I thought this would be a great spot for a pre-show bite. High Lúa is located in a mixed commercial/residential area of Williamsburg; it kinda gives off the "hole in the wall" vibes when walking in, but it's done up nicely and was very comfortable despite its small size. While they have a few tables, they probably also do a fair amount of takeout - I noticed a few people coming in during our meal for pickups. The decor was minimal, but a nice feature was a neon sign on one of the walls which is perfect for some food shots - I'm a sucker for neon. The menu wasn't too large, but they had a decent selection of apps and mains. We decided to start with the sausage rolls; these were pretty good - they were stuffed with greens and cold vermicelli with just enough sausage. The sauce it was paired with provided good contrast to the freshness of the roll. For my main I got the fried turmeric chicken. I really liked this dish a lot - it was a relatively large piece of chicken that was fried and seasoned well with a lot of flavor. The pickled vegetables and white rice it came with complemented the meat well, as did the flavorful sauce. Even though the chicken was fried, I did not find it to be a heavy dish at all. Service was good - we were seated promptly and the food came out quickly. Everyone was really friendly too, which made the experience all the more enjoyable. I have been to High Lua a number of times and have always had a good experience. It is a pretty small restaurant, with a handful of tables inside. They are currently offering an all-day, everyday happy hour on house wine and beer. I have tried the following dishes: Goi Cuon Tom (Shrimp Summer Rolls) (4/5): These are a really nice version of goi cuon. The ingredients are always fresh, and they are served cut in half, so very shareable. No complaints about this. Bap Xao Trung Muoi (Stir-Fried Corn with Salted Duck Egg) (3/5): This dish was okay - very buttery, and very salty (probably due to the tiny shrimp). I enjoyed the flavors of the corn, but I also think that it is probably going to be too shrimpy / salty for others. Banh Uot (Steamed Rice Cake) (4/5): I have had this dish at High Lua before, but it's not currently on the menu. I had it without the ham. I love banh uot as a dish, and this is a great rendition. If it's put back on the menu, I would definitely order. My Quang (4.5/5): Very tasty dish. Central Vietnamese in origin, with turmeric rice noodles in a shallow broth. I would definitely recommend this. Pho Chay (3/5): Having had this dish again, it was just okay. The broth was not that savory, and having tried others more recently, it's not my favorite in the area. The serving is ample, with tons of vegetables. Their pho was extremely disappointing -- the noodles didn't have good texture, there was no depth to the broth (it kinda tasted like soy sauce water), and they are not generous with the amount of meat. There was the option for Jasmine Rice. The pricing is about $20 per person which is the going rate nowadays. Yum! High Lua is a cute little neighborhood spot with good food and great service. The space is small, so you'll be very close to the people sitting next to you - we made friends! This is our third or fourth time eating here over the years. If we lived closer, we'd come more often. It's a frigid, windy day. Both the hub and I are getting over colds, so what better soothing lunch than pho? My go-to at other places is pho with shredded white meat chicken. The rice noodles are the same width, but a bit thicker. The broth has a mild seafood flavor. He likes it. I prefer the relative simplicity of mine. We like the cozy ambience of the place. The space is on the smaller side -- not tiny, but intimate-feeling. The finishes are a mix of brick, rustic wood and colorful tile. The overhead lighting is warm and on the dimmer side, but not in an annoying way. There are also twinkle lights lining the wall, which add a quaint element. Friendly service.
