Stopped in here before going on a hike at Wissahickon park and was super impressed! This place is really quaint and very busy on the weekends - I'd imagine earlier is better, but I could be wrong. The crowd was a mixture of locals: kids, families, and your average coffee lover. I ordered a chai tea made with rice milk (ps... this is the first coffee shop that I've ever been to that offers rice milk as non-dairy option and I was super impressed) and I "built" my own crepe. Not knowing the size of the quiche, I was also tempted by a pumpkin bar topped with brown butter icing in the pastries window (damn you, pasties window!). While the pumpkin bar was like a bite of heaven, I definitely did not need so much food because the crepe was huge! A friend got the mini apple pie, which was also delicious with her crepe and we agreed it was too much food. The space is tight though and it was hard to find an open table at 9:30 on a Saturday morning. I thought it was a little pricey before I tasted anything that we got, but I was thoroughly surprised with the taste so I'm over it now. I highly recommend if you are in the area! read more

My wife and I were heading into Philly for a Valentine's Day lunch and afternoon of fun and romance. We had grand visions of finding a great pub and just languishing with a few drinks and some hand-holding . Five minutes after leaving our driveway, we were starving. The thought of driving downtown, finding parking and everything else on empty stomachs was too much. I get nauseous on Kelly Drive when Emily drives. Not her fault...it's all mine. She gets cranky with her empty stomach. We'd be at each other's throats before boathouse row. Believe me, this has happened before. So, instead of falling into that trap, we detoured into Mt. Airy and stopped at the High Pointe Cafe, which is across the street from Weavers Way Co-Op. It's actually affiliated with them, but don't hold that against them. Oh....SNAP! Can't believe I just wrote that, but I'm marching on. I love the vibe of this place. Sure, there are many cool, trendy coffee places that serve lunch in the city, but how many have a staff that is actually friendly. Really friendly. The people behind the counter are all smiles and recommend the hot item of the day. Their specialties are crepes and coffee. Mon dieu, how French. The food is delicious and the coffee is very good. We are never disappointed. You have to wait a bit since the place is busy, but it's worth it. Tables are tough to get at lunch, but persevere and you'll find a seat and settle in for a nice experience. Great neighborhood place that has some cool art on the walls and cool folks behind the counter. Who needs downtown when you have Mt. Airy right around the corner. The coffee is delicious but the pastries are what I really come here for; there's nothing I've tried from their great selection that's been disappointing. Make sure you go early in the day as they run out quickly. The space is cozy and has a constantly changing art display that's, in most cases, available for sale. Staff is attentive and personable. My boyfriend and I went here early one weekend and had a really nice time. The coffee was pretty average, but the food was so yummy! Shame on me! I live only three blocks from High Point Cafe but don't stop as often as I should. You know, job, economy, busy life.... I will be frank, their organic coffee is too strong for me, and most dishes aren't Kosher. For this reason, I order their specific crepe: spinach and cheese (with pine nuts on my request) or sometimes their dessert; most are good. What keeps drawing me back to High Point Cafe, you might ask. The environment is loud but warm. They provide dog bones and water to dogs who have to wait outside. The best part of all is I have never once seen any staff to be cranky. They all manage to keep cool under usually very stressful days. I just love them! read more

Stopped in on a Saturday morning and the place was packed! After getting my latte and cranberry scone I can see why! Delicious homemade pastry and wonderful latte. They have dairy-free milk options such as almond, soy, and rice. I didn't get to try the crepes but they looked and sounded great as well. Ever since my departure from New York City after graduating from college, I've been looking for a local place that's good for a caffeine buzz, light lunch, or study spot. Starbucks and other chain stores grossly fail to meet my above standards mostly because customers are generally treated as nameless, faceless drones. I found High Point after I joined the Weavers Way Co-Op in West Mount Airy and was hooked. The staff? Knowledgeable! Don't know the difference between a caffe latte and a hole in the ground? Don't worry, they'll take you through their great menu without the side condescension. Always courteous and friendly, even to the gaggles of kids that come in from the school across the street around 3pm. The drinks? Made to order, the right way, the first time. They even offer their own beans. The food? Amazing quiche and crepes made to order. A diverse array of taste bud temping baked goodies. And salads for the guilty folks. Best of all - you can load a gift card in the shop, write your name on it, and have it stored behind the counter for your next visit. No more digging nickels out of your pockets to get a fix. No worries, they also take plastic. They're also pretty eco-friendly and inspire their customers to be as well by offering a credit for anyone who brings their own mug or thermos. I love that you can form relationships here, bring your mom here, meet a potential date here. The bulletin board is filled with active posts about pets for adoption, mommy and me groups, etc. And I'm only a few yards from the Co-Op across the road for groceries. read more

Those most worth mentioning include: (a) their frequent buyer card [something like buy 10 get 1 free], and (b) the complete absence of annoyance from staff whenever I brought in a squirmy but adorable tot. This little store is a neighborhood cafe with quality coffee, baristas who know how to make a good latte and pastries begging to be eaten. Their unique offering is a wide variety of crepes, savory and sweet. I have never been blown away by the crepes, though, to be fair, I am not necessarily a crepe fan. Most recently I ordered the Turkey, Spinach and Cheddar crepe. And it was ok. I wish the turkey was shredded or in bigger pieces or something...or maybe smoked or...I don't know...something different then what it was (small cubed pieces). It was just kind of boring and definitely had too much spinach and too little turkey to justify spending $7. There's no wi-fi in this place so keep this in mind if you are looking for a coffee shop to sit and use your computer while you are drinking and snacking. I think my previous post about the espresso drinks may now be irrelevant. The maple latte is now one of my favorite drinks. The first time we visited, the mocha just didn't have a rich chocolate and coffee flavor and the milk foam wasn't very tight. The baristas have gotten a lot better, the foam is nice and creamy and the mocha is much better. Also, the chai is bold and spicy. I haven't seen the pistachio turnovers lately which makes me sad, but they have other excellent pastries there as well. I wish the place was a little bigger, but it's good for grab and go. read more

High Point is worth the drive from any part of the city for the warm cinnamon buns alone! But son't stop there- come by for lunch and have delicious crepe with goat cheese and spinach or ham and cheese. Great coffee and every other home made baked good you can imagine. This place was a wonderful surprise! We were visiting the area and arrived on an early morning flight. We checked Yelp for nearby cafe's that served vegetarian food and found this wonderful place on a little side street off Lincoln Drive. Not only was it super cute with amazing homemade baked goods on display, it had excellent made-to-order crepes, delicious coffee, and awesome art on the walls! High Point Cafe is the high point of my day! They open early, which is great, the sooner you get there the better. Seating is minimal, but everyone who are locals know and respect some unknown table rule and there are hardly any table hoggers ever! The staff is incredible, I am somewhat picky about my coffee and they always are happy to make what I request and they never dissapoint. I have never had a better cup of coffee than here. Having worked in a, to put it plainly, snob's coffee shop during my last year of college, I quickly learned to recognize truly good espresso in order to earn a paycheck. High Point Cafe serves truly fantastic espresso. Each barista who has worked on my orders has crafted cappuccinos and lattes with no room for complaint. They pay close attention to the details of an individual order, a rarity in today's coffee chain world (yay small coffee house!!). Why only 4 stars? I haven't tried the baked goods yet. Waiting for my host to be ready for my stay, I decided to park here to get out of the cold (and connect back up with work). Being at a rail station probably gets a lot of business in the morning, but fortunately for me it was mid-afternoon. Even so, all the tables were filled up, some loners on their laptops, but most had people conversing with each other. It felt more like the neighborhood meetup as opposed to the mass-market coffee cafes I'm used to back home (Seattle). There seemed to be even a local meetup that took place while I was there although I could not ascertain the subject matter. Kids streamed in after school, probably looking for some goodies to munch on. I had an Americano, and thought it was well done. It definitely warmed me up from the biting windy cold. They have an assortment of pastries in their stock, but were out when I came around. Apparently, people came by asking for such things and were disappointed to hear the cafe was empty of those carby-things. I guess that's a good sign for repeat business. I am glad one of my first experiences in Philly was like at a neighborhood place like this. If I am ever in the area again, I'll definitely stop by, if only to understand what I'm missing from the foodstuffs section. read more

This place is definitely a bit hispster-ish, but only in the nicest ways. They're big on everything homemade and homegrown and love kids and pets. Busy little coffee shop in the Chestnut hill area. We've been in a few times for a cappuccino, and they are one of the few places that actually make cappuccinos correctly (with a lot of foam on top.) Admittedly, I do like the "latte" form better, but a cappuccino is a cappuccino! They've always served us coffee in mugs, which is greatly appreciated since I am convinced it affects the taste when it's in a paper cup. The first time we visited, we purchased one of the gold background chicken paintings they had on display by a local artist named Lindsay. Each time we've visited, they've had different local artist. This past time was a photographer's work. Neat stuff. Anyway, I'd stop in if you're in the area. Coffee is pretty good, and the people are welcoming. read more

I've long enjoyed HP's coffee, crepes, and sweets. Everything is good, 'strue. However, it can be an unpleasant place. I understand that HP is committed to community and that members of the community feel like HP is their own little spot of wonderfulness. With that sense of ownership comes a sense of entitlement. Following the usual codes of customer behavior must seem like a refutation of the right to do as one pleases in one's own space. What I mean is, regulars can be jerks, and the staff may or may not handle rudeness with aplomb. The line is long, everyone is placing complex orders and paying for them in multistep ways, and at last it is my turn to pay for my cup of coffee. But now a woman shoves her mug at the counterperson and says, "I just want a refill! I just want a refill!" The counterperson takes the mug and fills it. Refills aren't free, so this interruption to my transaction becomes a transaction itself, involving the exchange of cash while I stand aside with my own cash, which is waiting to be exchanged. Next, a man hands his HP card to the counterperson and says he'd like a hundred dollars added to it. Another transaction, involving handing of cards back and forth and signing of receipts. Two sales were allowed to butt in on my sale, while I am left suspended somewhere in time between Hihowyadoin' and Thankshaveagoodday. The counterperson did look pained, and she did thank me for my patience (perhaps with a gleam of irony in her eye), but I wish she had had better skills in handling a patient customer and two rude ones at once.
