Not bad, but not great. Decent. For the area it's likely the nicest more upscale restaurant, but the food was unimpressive. My favorite dish was the house salad, that should say something... but truly the mustard vinaigrette was delicious. My "Mountain Mule" came in a ceramic mug and tasted nothing of ginger. My heirloom potatoes were not cut uniformly and over-fried, just crispy but empty pockets of potato. The asparagus was cooked right not too crunchy not overly tender, and the chef's vegetable of the day: grilled spaghetti squash tasted like pure tomato and pepper. The fried green tomatoes weren't anything to write home about either. simple and plain, truthfully nothing that wows you. Our server was kind and courteous, especially with us as very visible out-of-towners. The meal was not worth the price, but they can get away with it since there's nothing else like it around there. Our bill left us disappointed for what we had, granted it was 11 of us, but like I said decent surely edible, but the quality of the food (preparation/cooking/flavors) definitely not worth the price. read more

Had a business dinner there last June 26th, 2014. It was one of the best meals that we've had. The food was fresh and well prepared. I had the Bruised and Blue Filet Mignon with Chef's vegetables and a Loaded Bake Potato. It was just fantastic. Tammy was our server, with 13 years experience there she was forthright with her suggestions and answering questions. When one of my colleagues ask about the scallops she said "they just came in Tuesday and they are on the small side.". It's always refreshing when someone is straight up honest with you. It would have been very easy to have pushed those scallops on him just to get them out of the kitchen. Since it was a week day we were seated immediately, but I understand it can get very busy during certain seasons. Anyway, great food, great service and wonderful ambience with lots of history and folklore with the Al Capone connection. I highly recommend this for special occasions. read more

Had reservations for 7:30 ordered 15 minutes after being seated. Did not get salad until almost 2 hours after ordering then another 20 to 25 minutes for main course. Spoke with owner and got the "busy" ezcuse. Got meal good food for 3 out of 4. Then owner overheard us talking and was VERY snarky and condescending towards us for being upset that 3 tables that sat down after us and ordered after us were served first. No excuse for this kind of behavior on the behalf of the owner! My husband and I ate dinner there last Wednesday, June 4th. It was one of the best meals that we had eaten in a long time. Our last pricey meal was for our 37th anniversary. We thought that was a good meal till we ate at High Point. both meals were about the same in price, close to $150 which included tip. One of those special meals. We have told all our friends about the place and cannot wait to go back for another special meal. I just want to say thank you to the chief and waitress for doing such a great job. I had the Makers Mark steak which was awesome and my husband had the Capone Seafood which was really good. But not as good as mine. My husband had the house salad with the mustard vinegarette and raved about it, I had the lobster bisque which was really good. My wife and I truly enjoyed our evening at High Point. The home and grounds are beautiful. The speakeasy jazz music playing in the background contributed to the Al Capone ambiance, too. Our server was superb, and we both thought our salads and meals were top notch (scallops and seafood platter). We did not sample the desserts this time, but hope to on our next trip. December 12, 2018 arrived around 5:30 -6:00 PM Stood at the door waiting for someone to acknowledge we were there 3 or more employees went passed within a foot or two and never spoke to us, after waiting what seemed to be ten minutes, we were about to leave when a lady, no welcome , no smile , no warmth of any kind came by ask if we had reservation, we said no, she gave out a grunting sigh in disapproval made us feel we were imposing on her as she had to climb the stairs, and said follow me. We were taken upstairs to what appeared to be an dark attic, in a tiny room with 3 tables ,atmosphere was terrible. My husband told them several times it was my birthday, each time no acknowledgement of any kind. This place is steeped in history. It offers a delectable cuisine in a cramped, yet comfortable setting indoors, which spacious starlight dining outside. The food is delicious and is presented well. For the area the cuisine is refreshing considering it is not southern cooking. The oysters and steak and lobster are an excellent choice. They have both indoor and outdoor seating.The bread is delicious.The French Onion soup is good as well as the salads. I do wish they offered more options for vegans/vegetarians. Go here for the baked Brie and you will be happy. I would say 4.5 not 5. The steak Diane sauce was overpowering but the steak was cooked well. The grilled poundcake is amazing as well as the Alfredo. The restaurant was once a fine home which made a lovely setting. I dined in November and enjoyed the added warm light from the flames in fire places. I enjoyed my meal but it could have been better. I almost feel guilty pointing out my perceived deficiencies but feel everything could be exceptional with a few slight changes The service I received was excellent. I started my evening with a cocktail - a Manhattan up. It was excellent. My first tiny criticism is the cocktail was "shaken" which produces a "foamy" Manhattan cocktail. (See picture). Shaking is great for chilling a drink but not the preferred way to make a Manhattan. The lobster bisque was smooth and you could tell it consisted of quality ingredients. A little salty for my tastes but not so much that I wouldn't order it again. I had the roasted duck breast with blackberry sauce. This was absolutely delightful! Warm Bread was served with a whipped butter blended with margarine. It was easy to spread but tasted like margarine. I would have preferred a simple pat of butter. read more

This restaurant lacks some of the foods on the menu and lets you know after your order goes in. We ordered the heirloom small potatoes and were disappointed at how plain and dry they were. My sister ordered the duck and liked it. The setting is nice but there is only one bathroom, either sex. Which, wouldn't have been a problem had the man who walked out while I was waiting hadn't left the seat up! Overall I'd say the food is overpriced and just mediocre and we'll keep looking for fine dining. read more

We drove from Nashville to spend the afternoon touring Monteagle. It was a great experience. We cruised The Assembly, drove through The University of the South, found the natural bridge and even drove to the bluff to see The Templeton library. As the sun was getting low and the Highpoint Restaurant opens, our palettes watering we entered to the smells of delicious food. There were five of us so orders could have been confusing. Our waitress was a local young girl who was very quiet, friendly and efficient. The ingredients of the food were all heavenly. The bread it to die for. I wondered what cow that creamy butter came from. They have lobsters, steak, shrimp and chicken dishes. Even the cubed fried potatoes were special. If you want a nice dinner along with a wonderful afternoon I suggest you leave the city and drive to the mountain. read more

A good selection of items on menu from steak to duck to fish. Opted for the steak as did my husband. Both ordered medium and both came well done. Not even a little pink in middle. My ribeye had three strips of grissle (?spell) through it. Poor cut. Service was okay. A little sloppy.. Waitress handed all four of our menus to one person to pass around. My husband and I recently dined at High Point for our 10 year anniversary. He had ate here before with a company trip. Since We have recently relocated to NW Georgia it was a short drive for us and he really wanted to dine here and praised how great the food was. We did not order any Hors D' oeuvres. We are not very adventurous with taste so there wasn't anything to appealing to us. I ordered the Queen New York Strip. My husband had the King's New York Strip. Both were served with choice of salad or soup and a side dish. I choose the caesar salad and my husband enjoyed the house salad. My caesar salad was probably the best caesar salad I have ever had. I didn't try my husbands salad but he enjoyed it and is a very picky eater. Our steaks were cooked perfectly. My husband orders his well done and most restaurant wouldn't suggest or guarantee a well done steak, but it came out perfect! The seasoned butter the put on top of the steak truly tops it off. I am not one for a lot of add on's to a steak. I believe a quality cut of meat cooked perfect doesn't need any add on's. But it bought so much flavor to the steak. My side was a baked potato which I cannot review on since I only focused on eating my steak. I didn't go there for a baked potato. But since the quality of everything else was so great I am sure the potato was just as good. My husband tried the fried herliom potatoes and loved them. We did enjoy desert and two cocktails. I was really looking forward to cheesecake but that wasn't a desert they had. I settled for the key line pie and it was delicious and very flavorful. You could tell it was fresh. My husband enjoyed the chocolate lava cake which he bragged about the entire car ride there. The restaurant doesn't have milk which is almost necessary to finish the chocolate cake. I had one bite and it was most moist rich cake I had ever had. Our cocktails were great. The waitress was new but did a wonderful job. You could tell she was trained, and took her time with every table giving each customer personal attention. We asked the hostess (which I think she was more the floor supervisor) to take our picture outside before we left. She was happy to help us and the restaurant was busy and we hated asking but I really wanted a picture. Cannot wait to visit again! read more

You got to be kidding. This is no better than restaurant trying to be a restaurant serving food that is not cook properly. Steaks are over cook and cuts are thin. If you are going to serve steaks on fine dining prices they MUST be no thinner than TWO inches. The soup of the day was NO better than vegetable soup with pieces of chicken in it. It is truly an experience to dine here, unfortunately let down by very average food. 3 stars for the food, 5 stars for the location! 1) The building is legendary. This used to be Al Capones mountain hideout. The waitress told me there are escape hatches in the roof and underground tunnels and that Capone and Dilinger had several escapades in this property. 2) A really nice venue. Wood floors, classic 1930s decor, very tasteful. It is a nice venue for either a power dinner with a local Tennessee mafioso, or a romantic date with your wife. 3) Great service. The staff are really nice and service is really attentive as it should be in Tennessee. 4) The disappointment is the food. While the ingredients are high quality, the recipes are not great. The fried green tomatoes were the most tasteless I have ever had. The steak diane sauce tasted odd - so odd that the steak Diane at even Cheesecake factory would be considered better. The lobster bisque was excellent. This was the consensus of 3 of the 4 diners in our group. One of us also tried the fish and found that to be average as well They should upgrade the menu since the property is too good to be serving average meals. read more

At a friends suggestion, my husband and I joined he and his wife for a meal at Highpoint on Friday, July 12, 2019. As I dont eat meat I ordered Scallops as an appetizer and Salmon as a main course. My salad of choice was a blackberry/ walnut I am sorry to say that the Scallops were dry and any chef worth his salt would be embarrassed to serve them. It appeared that they had been sliced and were presented as perfectly round, thin discs with no fleshiness to them at all. I ate them without comment to ensure a harmonious dinner with our friends. The salad was unappealingly dry and the dressing was so tart that it was unpleasant. My friend's wife also ordered this salad and made a similar comment to me and also noted that her salad didnt even have the advertised Gorgonzola on it. My Salmon was just okay, however, the vegetable of the day (sauteed Rainbow Chard with Onions & Fennel) was a dark blob of greens with maybe a couple of small scraps of Fennel. When I asked if I had been given the correct vegetable the server immediately asked if I would rather have something else....that's how unappetizing it looked! I ordered Asparagus, which is a pretty safe bet! For the prices charged, Highpoint management needs to ensure that the quality of food issuing from their kitchens is consistently excellent. Our dinner last night was below expectations. The service was fine, but my sirloin strip steak was served over done (medium vs. medium rare) and was served cold, including the green beans. As such, I had to request that they heat it up a bit and, of course,it came back medium well. Birthday road trip this week, our second visit. Old brick 1930's mansion built by Al Capone for one of his girlfriends (now that's my kind of man), the highest point between Miami and Chicago. Dark, atmospheric, huge outdoor area for summer, cozy fire for winter indoors. Dirty martinis and wine seem to be the libation of choice here...extra dirty of course. Fried Lobster tail appetizer was tasty with a light pineapple fluff to dip it in, sesame duck breast appetizer was deliciously rare. My 8oz fillet mignon was Ok but a little too well done, I asked for medium, Pablos 10oz New York /strip which he asked for medium was bloody and rare. The chef's green beans of the day were green bean crack awesome. No room for pudding but all the usual suspects were there. e.g bananas foster. Service was a little hesitant and shy but no matter. High Point is an excellent place for special occasions! The seared tuna is delicious and the Maker's Mark steak are two of our favorites, however, I've had everything on the menu and never had a bad meal! The only criticism I have is that the servers could dress up a bit more and the decor could be more lavish. The theme is roaring 20's and it is very modestly decorated. Incredible meal in a historic home! We went here for my husband's birthday and it did not disappoint! From the fresh bread to the grilled pound cake dessert...everything was top notch! I got the New Orleans tuna and my husband got the Blackberry Duck. Both were cooked perfectly and the side of cheddar grits were a great match! Wife got Chicken Caprese, is chose Madiera Chicken. I tried both and my wife asked which was better. They were very different flavors, but both were excellent.
