OK. A pleasant day trip to Salida Sunday 12/28. Salida, the gathering place of the cool set, adventure seekers, fine cuisine and the inappropriately named High Side. First impression. Nice facility with a good, laid back and relaxed vibe. We arrived with a 3 lb service canine and checked on arrival with someone who may have been tending bar, being older than others I took a chance she might have some position in the business. When I got closer to the bar it occurred to me owners/managers/team leads wouldn't be dressed as casually as that...so I'd jumped to a conclusion...I suppose. Anyway she eyed me suspiciously, actually doubtfully and looking over my shoulder toward the entrance trying to work out just what kind of wool was going to be pulled over her eyes. The little creature wasn't wearing his colorful vest but was wearing his ama badge, still I got the doubting side-eye. Enough on that dear reader...you get the picture. The High Side was chosen over its competitors by glancing over the menu and looking at pictures on Yelp. A limited menu to be sure but adequate for a light Sunday Lunch. My companion ordered the fried chicken sandwich and I the basic smash burger. Absolutely everything additional incurs up charges..we limited ourselves to an order each of French Fries. Our waitress was young, pleasant and attentive. The food arrived in good time. The plates didn't look much like the pictures...and honestly it was downhill from there. The Fried Chicken fetched from the freezer and left for an extended stay in the deep fryer was actually inedible. Fried to a crisp and resistant to all but savage gnawing. One bite was one too many and the plate was returned to the server. Appetite now lost that was the end of that dining experience. Manager appear, regret expressed, anything? Sadly no. The burger was overcooked and dry...but edible and being famished it was eaten. As a matter of opinion at the price point of the burger having shredded lettuce was a surprise. OK the pictures of nicely fresh prepared French Fries on Yelp didn't prepare us for frozen fries. Our server absolutely did the best she could. At the very least owners/management are taking the easy, least challenging path in preparing food. At worst the low bar they set for themselves is laziness and a lack of actually caring. The hard surfaces in the dining area lets voices carry easily. The bar maid, the older one with the pentecostal/old maid bun was overheard making remarks about customers that didn't put her in the best light. Not good... Are we returning? Not on your life. Should you patronize the High Side? Only if you are willing to settle for less than you deserve. read more

I would not eat here. It took over 30 minutes to get our food. They had one food runner for the whole restaurant, and it is a big place. Really, you couldn't get one of the many waitresses to help. Chill spot with hard-working staff. I can see this being a great place to watch sports games if you're into that (or stay up late for food & drink) but my partner and I mostly came here because I was craving hot wings. I had that and a House Margarita, finishing the meal with Peanut Butter Cheesecake. The margarita was a little too sweet, and the cheesecake didn't hit the spot, but the wings were tasty. We were waking around the river and asked a few locals for their recommendations and this was the first place that many mentioned. There is a ton of room great levels of seating. We went with the pork fried dumplings which were delicious and then we had the smash burger which my son claims was one of the best burgers he had had. We sat on the patio over looking the river. Best cowboy burger I've ever had and I've traveled at eight cowboy burgers all over the state sweet potato fries were amazing and the cheese curds you couldn't beat with the chipotle ranch. My wife and I came here with our two huskies in the evening, during a week long leaf-peeping roadtrip at the end of September 2022. We wanted to go to the Boathouse Cantina a couple of blocks away, but were turned away because of a private function. We had the fried mushroom appetizer, which we both thought was good. I had the falafel pita (which I get pretty much everywhere that offers one) and it was very tasty - some places overcook the falafel balls and dry them out, but they were moist and tender at High Side. My wife had a chili burger, which she said was fine but not great. Our waitress never returned to the table after bringing our meal, so we didn't have the opportunity to order a second beer, which was OK because their beer menu is very limited and didn't feature anything either of us particularly like. We loved the expansive patio within hearing distance of the river, but that's probably not enough to bring me back next time I'm in Salida. Might be OK for lunch, but a bit disappointing for dinner. And, it was only the second best falafel I had in Salida - the falafel I ordered from Mountain Pass Panini at Soulcraft Brewing was the bomb! read more

I'm sorry, I know a lot of people love this place, but I was not impressed at all. $32 after tip for a ginger beer and 12 wings. The wings barely had any meat on them, and barely had any sauce. Nearly flavorless, and I left still hungry. The live music was okay, but kind of boring. The service was fine, my server was friendly and did a good job. Stopped in for lunch and was able to get seated outside. There is a nice area outside for dining while you watch the river and the rafters float by. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich with a side salad. We also had the fried mushrooms and cheese wontons for appetizers. Everything was delicious and tasty. Went here yesterday with girlfriends and really enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere was incredible outside sitting by the river. The food was also very good. Much better than regular bar food! The server was also very nice. My only comment is, it would have been nice if the server did know the correct cost of items on the menu that didn't have the price printed (ie margaritas). Also the customer should be advised when asking for additional sauce that there is an extra charge. We enjoyed our visit to this riverside restaurant. The pot stickers were amazing, different then most Iv had. The fries and ranch are mmmmmmm good. The burger and sand which left room for improvement. A bit over cooked. Chicken strips were great. Service was awesome. First visit was quiet and beautiful. Lunch time on a weekday. When we went back for a second visit, on a sat night, it was veryyyyyyy loud inside, which was expected due to the night life scene, but we definitely could not handle it being autistic individuals with sensory issues. The biggest reason I'm giving 5 stars is because of the location, service, and speed. It's absolutely gorgeous sitting out by the river and there was a live band. We really enjoy taking day trip to the Salida area. On this trip looking for a different place to have lunch and stumbled upon High Side. At the very moment walking in the door was not great. I wish we would have turned around and walked out to find somewhere else! The bar tender is so freaking rude and disrespectful. After reading some of the reviews she is mentioned and how she is still there is beyond me. If she is allowed to talk about customers loud enough to be heard by them shows that what ever she does is ok by management. Our waitress was so nice and was great just wish I got her name to mention. Once placing our order for food it did not take long to come to the table (red flag). I ordered a chicken sandwich with side of fries and spouse ordered a burger with side order of fries. The first thing I noticed was the chicken was still a little cool, the chicken was extremely thin and both fries and chicken are frozen. Unfortunately I think McD chicken sandwich is better. Looking at pics others have posted did not look like what I received. The burger was not much better but was eaten. I finally got the waitress and asked to have the chicken and fries taken off my bill. She told me I have to check with manager. The manager is sitting at the bar and never asked what was wrong or even came by the table to asked what could she do to make it right! The waitress brings the menu to order something else but if the manager does not care if their customers are happy why would I want to spend any more money? I'm sure if the manager of this restaurant didn't care to talk to me directly at the time they will not care about this review. So for this I hope at least helps other yelpers make better decisions on where to eat in such a fantastic small city that Does have great places to eat. But differently not here! read more

We ordered two salads and a smash burger. After about 40 minutes I had to find a server to ask about the status of our food. The owner himself came over to tell us we were next. That they were really busy. That we wouldn't "understand ". That they were changing shifts. Had a lot of orders etc. not once did he simply say "sorry". "Someone should have kept you updated" etc. my sister said that if someone had simply just told us they were behind we'd be fine but sitting here that long with no update was frustrating. That if just anyone had said they were behind we'd get it. Again he deflected then said "what do you want me to do, rub your feet?" I think the three of us just stared at him. Did you really just say that? We weren't really complaining about the time We've eaten out knowing that because of shortages the world is different. We only ordered wings and fries but I've never only waited 5 minutes for wings. They were OK. Zero crisp which was disappointing. The location of this restaurant is its biggest asset. There's a large patio overlooking the river and there are trees making shade for the tables along the railing. A must when it's hot. The remaining tables have umbrellas. There are also tables inside and under a metal roof overlooking the patio. It's a lot cooler under the roof. I ordered a black and blue burger. I asked if the patty could be cooked medium and was informed all burgers are cooked to well done. She wasn't kidding. There's WELL done and then there's well DONE. I got the latter. Every ounce of moisture was cooked out of this poor meat patty. The bacon was also well DONE. My mates burger was in the same condition. The two waitresses working the patio were awesome. Only compliments there. At the end of your meal they verbally give you the bill total. No ticket. Ours was pretty simple to add up as we only ordered two items but I can see where this would be a problem under different circumstances. I'm sure this practice is mandated by management and not the wait staff. Another odd thing they do (probably also mandated by management) is ask if you need cutlery. I don't think I've ever been asked that before. All in all I probably wouldnt return except for drinks. It is after all, a great patio. read more

We've been here before for drinks and sat out on the patio & it's a great location! We came here after Joyful Journey's hot springs ravenous! The ladies we talked to at the springs steered us clear of this place & suggested the Fritz but that doesn't open till 4 so we decided to start here until the Fritz opens. This is not the typical foodie place we gravitate towards but pubs/sports bars have their place. The location is pretty, it has an island feel with their Bob Marley music playing which I like. We got the goodness mixed fried zucchini, mushrooms & pickles which was hot, fresh & hit the spot. And we got a double smash burger & that was really good too! The service was prompt & friendly. I'm sure we'll keep visiting as long as we come to Salida since they're pet friendly on the patio too. read more
