High Sierra Bakery is a fan favorite in this Eastern Sierra big "small town." We have been enjoying the donuts, cookies, breads, pastries and cakes since 1995. While ownership has changed at one point, the bakery has stayed in the family. Locals absolutely depend on this jewel. High Sierra bakery is more than just a shop, but a place where neighbors meet, chat, and feel at home, fostering a sense of connection. Locals also order donuts for their different clubs, acitivities and gatherings. Tourism is also a big part of the bakery clientelle. The bakery has extended hours during peak summer time. It's essential to get to the bakery early during these times to be able to have many variety choices. While the bakery must close for the winter, you can depend on them usually beginning in April into October. It has been a long time, but we have ordered birthday cakes in the past. Everything here is consistent. The apple fritters are a big hit, and I say big hit because they are HUGE. The bakery also has sandwiches on the menu, but I think they are usually not available until after 11. There is plenty of seating inside and a couple of tables outside. Parking is available on the street and it is within walking distance from all local motels.

Stopped here on the way home from Mammoth to have an early dinner. We had originally decided on the Deli but even though Yelp said they were open, they weren't. So their loss was our gain because I really enjoyed the High Sierra Bakery. I ordered up a delicious Sierra Haystack, A MUST DO when you go here. The bag was tempting, but they also have single haystacks for sale. My wife ordered up the Hulk and shared a bite of her sandwich with me. Perfectly made, in my opinion. Nice flavors and not too much of anything. They did have to sub pepperoni for salami but that didn't make much of a difference. For my sandwich I decided on a simple PBj because I wasn't super hungry. It was a good choice. Great bread and simple ingredients. The space is big enough for most groups that are coming through town and it really did feel very small town vibe. The service was good too! So many times I hesitate to get anything really unique in small towns because they just don't have the turnover, but High Sierra was pleasant surprise when it came to the quality of everything we had. I will definitely head there next time I am driving through from Reno.

What a nice bakery. We enjoyed a nice sandwich here and enjoyed a fritter, danish and donut. The fritter was our favorite.

    Cinnamon rolls and cold brew

Delicious cinnamon rolls and cold brew. Will definitely come back, and not only because they're the only place open early. Friendly and welcoming atmosphere.

    If nothing else, they're patriotic.

October, 2024. Everything was great in this Bakery except my Cinnamon roll. By great I mean ambiance and friendly people. The roll itself was dry as can be. Maybe it was a bad batch, but for five bucks I would have expected more. No prices posted. My guess it's that way so it won't scare people away. I tell you what, if their coffee doesn't give you a jolt, their prices surely will. But, after all it's California. The night before, at another establishment, I paid $24 for a hamburger and a beer. When I paid for that I laid down two twenties and the server asked me if I wanted change! I sure do want change. It's time for a change. Quick Tip: The Cinnamon roll is labeled as such. But what the little sign doesn't say is that the roll you just bit into has raisins in it. I prefer it that way, but someone who doesn't is sure going to get a surprise.

Friday morning 9 am and Just passing through, so stopped for coffee and grabbed an order of their coffee cake as well. Unfortunately they were all out of apple juice, ran out of forks, no napkins to be found, and the servers were not so friendly. It was busy but also happened to be one of the few places open at this hour. $9 and change for coffee and cake. The system is also a little confusing if you've never been here. Order pastries on the right and coffee/pay on the left. The sandwiches on the menu sounded delicious but we didn't order. The coffee was eh, and the cake was too big to eat without a fork. It was moist and reasonably tasty. The cake sits atop a layer of baked apples and cinnamon. The 2 pcs in the photo is one order.

Stopped at this place twice passing through the Owens Valley. The bakery is lovely- they make their own bread and sweets- and they also make breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Their homemade BLT sandwiches on their own bread were tasty. The star of the show was their sweets. Excellent brownie and their coconut macaroons which they call haystacks. Definitely the best we've eaten. They mix dates and walnuts in with them, and it gives a whole other rich layer of flavors.

    Out front.

Service was friendly and the food was excellent. The Reuben is a thick hot pastrami on grilled Jewish rye with Swiss, sauerkraut, and Thousand Island. The Tahoe Blue is a hot albacore tuna melt on grilled sourdough with cheddar. Both came with a side as advertised, salad on my plate and fries on my wife's with Ranch dressing to dip the fries in. Portions were generous and the bread is amazing and baked in-house daily. The bakery case is one of many reasons to come back....! Coffee cakes, croissants, cookies, fruit tarts, and packaged loaves were all out and labeled. We bought croissants and cookies to take back to camp and they traveled (and ate) well....! The one real drawback is the building. The bakery and restaurant share a door with C.O.D. Casino next door. When that door opens, cigarette smoke comes into the dining and bakery area. The restroom is also on the casino side. That does not change the quality of the sandwiches or pastry, but it is noticeable and it is worth knowing before you sit down, especially if you are sensitive to smoke or bringing food out for a trip. Note: they do have outdoor seating. We love having this place close to home and will use it again for lunch and bakery takeout for sure! Four stars because the food and service earned five and the smoke and restroom setup cost one.

We always go to Schat in Carson, so when we were in Minden, its branch was our first choice for late lunch. We got what's available without the need for them to prepare, since they are closing. I got a ham sandwich and my two boys got pizza bagel -- everything is good, and although my sandwich is already pre-made, they still tasted fresh. I always love the ambiance there. It's always relaxing and the interior is classic. We ate in the park since they are already closing, but that's alright.

They had a DJ in the back playing music and I looked online and saw the photos of the baked goods. My husband went inside and ordered us some frittata and was lucky to get the last cinnamon roll. The frittata was OK needed a little bit more flavor and was not completely warmed up. It didn't have much meat in it more spinach and some onions, but not that great to be honest. Would be better if it had a nice buttery crust on the bottom, but definitely a good item to eat if you're on keto or not wanting to eat too many carbs. The cinnamon roll was absolutely delicious. Everything about it was super tasty. You can't go wrong if you order this item. I got an iced latte as well and it was really good, just took some time to get it . It's cute inside with some nice none food items for sale. We bought our baby a Tahoe board book. Right before we left my husband asked if he wanted to get a cookie, because he said they were huge lol.... so, we got oatmeal cookies by mistake , instead of chocolate chip. The cookies looked amazing but were hard as a rock . We thought they'd be chewy but instead were crumbly. The cashier was absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, the person taking orders was little standoffish after some ordering issues. I don't think putting customer's who have an issue on blast for the whole establishment to hear is appropriate. Mistreatment of customers for such a forward facing customer service position, isn't ok. We appreciate the cookies being comped. We will definitely be back for the cinnamon rolls in the future!
