Espresso drinks, they tout the top 10% of the tea in the world, lots of tea options. Inside they have a Special of the day, dozen donuts when we went. Our first visit we tried the churro 5/5, coconut macaroon 5/5, fruit Danish 5/5 and a maple bar donut 5/5. All great treats and worth another visit! What a wonderful little bakery/cafe this is. First room is coffees of many different varieties and then windows full of baked goods and sweet bites. Second room is the cafe that makes the best turkey soup and sandwiches. The prices for the portion sizes were VERY reasonable. Soup and full sandwich for under $20.00! I made 3 meals out of it and boy were both delicious! I did not try the sweets or pastries and I feel I won't be able to stop. Their breads are all made in house and you can really tell how fresh and good they are. Hands down my go to any time I come to Mammoth Lakes. The staff is very warm, friendly and professional. Their counterpart, Erick Schat, has significantly better bread. I came in expecting something similar, but the quality here just didn't seem to be quite up to par. I came in specifically for some bread and ended up getting a coffee cake as well, which brought the total to about $14. Not too bad price wise, but unfortunately everything was just kind of eh. They do have a pretty wide variety of breads, pastries, and other baked goods, so there are definitely plenty of options to choose from. I just didn't find anything that really stood out or made me think, "I need to come back for this." Compared to Erick Schat, I found the bread here noticeably less impressive. Service was okay and the overall experience was fine. Nothing was necessarily bad, but nothing really wowed me either. I was expecting something amazing being that this Bakery has the SCHAT name. However, I can't say that it was anything better than just mediocre. My kiddo had a ham and egg croissant for breakfast. She said that she really enjoyed that. My husband had an apple fritter. It had a very croissant like texture to it. It was light and flaky. It was also made up of several layers of buttery goodness. I had a pecan bun. I saw it and it looked more like a cinnamon roll, but it wasn't close to being that or anything like I expected. To be honest, I don't know what it is or why, but it felt tail. I didn't care for it all that much but I definitely made sure to finish it up because it cost so much. I don't usually pay so much for such a mediocre item. To be honest, if I had purchased the same item from another local bakery, and Ugale, one at that, I would've been terribly disappointed and probably would've requested a refund. Now that I've been here and have had the experience of some of their pastries, I am pretty sure of my decision in saying that I doubt I will be returning here. read more

Pretty clean spot but selection seems limited compared to the one in Bishop. Fresh sandwiches were lackluster at most. I gave it a try as I have heard they are pretty good but the value just wasn't there at 18$ for a full. Worst part was that toasting wasn't an option during my experience although it seemed that they had panini pressers behind the bar? Per their staff, they had to "spray" them so they weren't using them to toast today. I believe they meant just spraying them with oil but can't help but think that was more of an excuse than a real reason. As far as pastries and fresh bread, we waited in line for sourdough only to be told they only had Sheepherder bread even though they had a wide selection listed on the menu, granted it was only 11am on a Sunday. Will not knock them out completely as it may just be a one off time but might consider just sticking to their original spot in Bishop. read more

Came in here during our vacation to pick up our honey wheat bread for the week. My friend decided to get donuts. We hadn't tried the donuts for a long time so we tried the apple fritter, buttermilk bar and maple raised donut. The apple fritter was just average for us, we prefer a thin apple fritter. Given the prices they charge you would expect good service, but the workers could care less about customer service. The staff was annoyed that I had to ask them what each item cost. The workers acted like it's my fault I needed to know the price before I can make a choice. As others commented this is illegal to do in California. I asked for German chocolate cake three times and the lady gave me a red velvet cake when I went to inform her of her mistake she placed the red velvet cake from my container back into the display plate in the counter. save your money and go to the one in Bishop instead, I learned the fun fact from the hotel that location in Mammoth around by the Wife and locations always have bad service now that the wife and the husband are separated is only gone downhill. read more

This particular location is in Mammoth Lakes. I dropped by here twice but I wasn't able to get in the first time cuz I didn't know that they close at 6pm. So I went early on my next visit which was 3pm. To my surprise, they were already closing their doors and when I asked why, the lady wasn't able to give me a reason why. It seemed that they close the store when they feel like it. However, they let me in to grab one item quickly as promised. Because of this, I wasn't able to choose properly what I really wanted so I grabbed one item that's on top of the shelf. It wasn't something I really liked. This is some of the WORST service I have experienced anywhere in my entire life, rude, inefficient and incompetent. On top of that, the inside of this was place was disgusting, there was trash everywhere, including on the coffee bar, and there were boxes of moldy oranges which they were using to make orange juice out of! It was busy inside, but nothing too crazy for a popular bakery/cafe on a weekday morning. But the staff was behaving as though it was third first day ever inside a food establishment. They moved the line to the opposite side of the building twice for no reason causing chaos, and half the customers were receiving their coffee orders as they were ordering them, but the other half were told to wait and they would call them out. But that is not what was happening, they were quietly setting unmarked cups on the counter, and announcing what they were at the volume of a whisper, I kid you not. And again, there were a LOT of people waiting for drinks. But no one could figure out whose coffees were whose. It got so bad that I started yelling out orders I could hear because the "baristas" were just setting them down and whispering what they were and walking away. That was the only time during my visit things were kind of running efficiently, and it was because I was doing their job for them! They messed up one of my groups coffees, and instead of fixing their mistake, the extremely rude young woman behind the counter said "you didn't order it like that", until I pulled out a photo I had taken of our order screen before paying! Every customer in the building was upset and shaking their heads in disbelief, so I suppose the upside was it was a nice bonding experience between all of us bereft patrons, brought together by service that we all, as a collective, couldn't fathom how horrible it was. The pastries themselves were good and the coffee was decent, but not worth the 7 circles of hell it took to receive them. Sandwich was delicious! We got turkey sandwiches which were made with pulled roasted turkey. Lots of toppings and bread choices. And even comes with a cookie! would highly recommend grabbing a to go lunch before hiking to the top to enjoy. The deli worker was also very friendly and helpful. read more

**Avoid if you have allergies** My partner has several allergies, so we wanted to see if they had anything on their menu that my partner could eat before driving over. When we listed the allergies and asked if they had anything that didn't contain them, the staff laughed and said, "we're not that kind of restaurant," and refused to answer basic ingredient questions for specific dishes. We make these kinds of calls all the time and have never experienced someone this condescending about basic and common medical info. This location was very different from the other one in Bishop. It's def smaller and less items than the other one but still you get the fresh bread and goodies you crave. I absolutely love their fresh orange juice and don't mind paying those $7 for it. Love that they had a warm section with fresh breakfast croissants for those who are on the go like us to start a hike. They have a great seating area and nice views in the back to relax and enjoy your sandwich. They have a great sandwich station and you. A build your own sandwich which is great and very convenient with fresh ingredients and Bread most of all. Their coffee is great and we were able to try their hot chocolate with cinnamon and it was amazing! All the goodies we got and pastries were great! They even have a refrigerated area with drinks and jams and honey you can take home. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and spoke Spanish which I absolutely love, they had our orders out quick. Very hard working for sure. Love that they have this location as well for those who are in the area. Can't wait to visit again when we are in town. Def a must and love that they open early as well. Bathrooms were clean and love the tulip decor they had while making your way to the bathroom cute touch for sure. There is a big parking area so that's not a problem. Tried to purchase a bakery item here 7/20/26. Ambiance was not inviting. No prices posted. Very poor selection of baked goods. Waited at the counter to make a purchase, 20 something woman with big eyelashes completely ignored me. Apparently, collecting money from the tip jar was more important. A middle aged man employee told the woman to take care of my order. She ignored him. She's standing directly in front of me and ignoring me! Line behind me is now about 8 customers and no one is getting served. 2 counter employees who were available were not serving anyone. I left my purchase on the counter and walked out. Haven't been to Mammoth in years but used to go a lot when we were kids and I remember going to Schat's. I had stayed a couple nights in Bishop a few years ago and ate at that Schat's in the morning so I thought the Mammoth location would be about the same. It's quite a bit smaller and still a full bakery but nothing like Bishop so just know that. I couldn't find pricing on anything anywhere except a price for a dozen donuts at $32.50 which seemed high but I think that might have been for any donuts such as the fancier ones. I tend not to buy anything if I don't know the prices but we did pick up a sandwich in the back. They didn't have all of their breads available (I'm assuming because it's not only the off season but a weekday) but a pastrami on rye was good and it came with a pickle wedge and chocolate chip cookie. read more

I really did want to love this place. Walked in and enjoyed looking at all of their selections and ended up buying a ciabatta loaf and a chocolate chip cookie. I figure I'd start with some basics. The loaf was good, until you got to the center of it. Then it got really doughy. As for the cookie... oh, the cookie. How do you ruin a chocolate chip cookie? It was very crumbly. Maybe it was old? Even though I got there in the morning. And it had no taste... no flavor whatsoever. No chocolate, no sweet, just, flour? It was weird. It was so bad, it got thrown away. And I would never throw away a cookie. And as for the sandwiches next door... I couldn't justify paying $18 for a sandwich. I don't care how good it is... no sandwich is worth $18 unless there's seafood in it. And even then... it would be difficult. Schat's has been around since forever and I've been coming here year after year. The bakery items are always fresh and tasty. Their sheepherder's bread is a must try! It's so fluffy and the crust is so good. They come in original and different flavors as well. They serve sandwiches, and I like to order it with the sheepherder's bread and roasted turkey. The turkey was warm and delicious. A whole sandwich costs almost $18 (doesn't include cheese or avocado), which is too expensive in my opinion. Yes, the sandwich was really good, but I don't know if it's worth the price. Each sandwich also comes with a pickle and cookie. The service for the sandwiches was pretty slow. Even though the line was short with only a few people, they seemed understaffed and only had one or two workers helping out with making the sandwiches. We were in line for almost 20 minutes, which is a pretty long time for a grab-and-go type of sandwich shop. The inside dining area has plenty of tables and seating, perfect for small or large groups. Overall, Schat's is a staple of Mammoth with great pastries and sandwiches, but unfortunately the downside is the increasing prices. read more

Shame on you Schats. There are no prices for any product at this location, and no manager apparently. $7 for an apple turnover? come on. We have been coming to Schats on all our Mammoth trips for about 10 yrs now and I was very surprised why we saw no prices. the more i looked, I realized there are no prices for anything in the bakery side. It is now against the law to not post your prices. Effective July 1, 2024, California law (SB 478, the "Honest Pricing Law") requires cafes and restaurants to display prices that include all mandatory fees, such as service charges or automatic gratuities. I came in around 1pm during a weekday with two employees behind the register and it was still slow lol. They were mostly out of goodies so this was definitely interesting. Definitely prepare for "mountain time" because things do feel like they move like molasses. So plan your time accordingly. The chocolate cake slices were so so good. I can't wait to come back and order it again. Best item I tried. A second best was the cinnamon twist donut. Good flavor. Not doughy and light enough. Something I would not get again would be: thumb print cookies. The breading was too sweet and the jam on top had the consistency of jello. Definitely put too much gelatin in the jam or something.
