($9.45) Regular cream cheese just does not work with French toast. Cream cheese frosting would definitely work though. The French toast itself was very good with thick slices of airy bread. I've been coming here ever since I was little. Every time I come to Winthrop, having brunch at HiTides is a must! Sometimes I get pancakes. Sometimes I get stuffed French toast. Occasionally I'll get a grilled cheese or an omelette- and almost always get either milk, grapefruit, or cranberry juice :). No matter what I get though, its amazing! The food comes quickly, like so quickly you barely have time to process what happened- but you know it's made fresh because you can see them making it at the grills. Very reasonably priced too! This is an old fashioned dinner in a real neighborhood setting. The service is good but the staff seems to be trying a different approach as the table turnover is high and there are many servers. The food is good but they could get a bit more creative if desired. Coffee is delicious. Prices are reasonable. Suggestion to management: Organize your servers so that they are happy and able to serve without confusion. The waitstaff area is cramped behind the counter. You have some really great servers who connect with guests. Leverage this! Your servers are what make this place special. read more

I am absolutely astounded by the rude and arrogant remarks that a friend and I had to endure this morning. The owner of this establishment was our server today. Both my friend and I each ordered a walnut pancake. When the breakfast was delivered, the pancakes were plain. When I stated very nicely that the order was incorrect, the owner became very irate and insisted that I had made the mistake. I attempted to tell her that I had clearly stated what I was ordering. She said, " Ok,ok...you have rights!" She returned with a bowl of walnuts and proceeded to throw them on top of the pancakes! My friend and I were absolutely shocked! Not the greatest but definitely not bad! After living down the street for almost five years, I've FINALLY gotten to eat breakfast here. It was pretty good. Of course, me wanting everything for breakfast I got a combo which had eggs, meat of choice, toast, pancakes and home fries. Everything was really good and was super filling. You may end up sitting with others that you don't know, but this is something that often happens in Winthrop. We are friendly people so just deal with it, mmkay? Lastly, breakfast for two of us was about $10, total..thats right. TOTAL. Dinner....this is a whole different story. I really wanted to like the fact that they are now open for dinner but it just wasn't that good. I had the meatloaf, it needed salt. I never put salt on food...but this was just meat and peppers. It was tough to eat. The sides were instant tasteless mashed potatoes and canned green beans. I felt so embarassed for them, but in all fairness they had just begun dinner. Their mac and cheese was actually pretty good, a huge portion of creamy, rich macaroni and cheese yum. Chicken parm...again, needed salt...anything to add flavor! I'll try again for dinner, hopefully they've perfected the bland food, but they definitely have some good options! If they pass the test then this will become four stars yay! read more

The classic greasy spoon seems to be an endangered species in these parts. But, the good people at High Tide in Winthrop are keeping it real with butter soaked toast and low prices. The best thing on the menu would have to be the grilled bagel. I would have to blame my lack of dating in high school to the grilled bagel since it probably attributed to my girth. They sop the bagel (which is a great bagel for this area- honestly I know it is hard to believe- great bagel in Massachusetts) in butter and let it hit the skillet til golden brown. Great with cream cheese. The sausage and bacon are typical. The hashbrowns should be ordered "burnt". Big boys and girls alike enjoy the #8 High Tide Special which essentially has all of the breakfast essentials represented. Recently expanded their menu to include dinner items, and they don't look too shabby. High Tide is a local town hangout. I have vivid memories of weekend breakfasts and post-soccer game pigouts. Love their omelettes, poached eggs, bacon... today I went the sweet route and ordered the apple-stuffed French toast and it was damn good and the portion was monstrous. Next time, I'll order the half order (two pieces with chunks of apple and filling in between) and I'll be just fine. The coffee is local coffee house worthy. They grind their own beans!
