Ahimsa is a hippie cafe in downtown Long Beach. While it has a great location, it doesn't live up to its potential. I had the Avocado BLT ($8), a cup of tea ($2) and a slice of blueberry cheesecake ($5). The tea initially came out to be under-brewed; it was basically just yellow water (appealing, indeed). To their credit, they re-brewed the cup for me which fixed things, but it's not clear to me how you could mess up a cup of tea to begin with. The avocado BLT was okay, but nothing special. It was basically just avocado, store-bought tempeh and vegan mayo put on bread. There was nothing special or unique about it. With this sandwich, I literally was paying for Ahimsa's staff time in assembling the sandwich; I WASN'T paying for anything interesting or proprietary (how about a home-made sauce or a chef-prepared seasoning for the tempeh, or home-baked bread?). Restaurants and cafes should go further than just assembling and shlepping ingredients, especially when the business is vegan and focused on healthier and tastier living. The blueberry cheesecake was also bland. I liked the large bites of blueberry in the cheesecake base, but this was an otherwise pedestrian attempt at raw vegan "baking." All told, I wasn't impressed with Ahimsa. If they developed unique dishes and upped their recipe and preparation quality, they'd be worthy of one or two more stars. read more

To all the meat eaters out there: this place is legit!! I've grown up a omnivore and never tried vegan before coming here. To be honest, I've always been skeptical about vegan cheese - how could it possibly be as good as the real thing? Well, I had the tomato basil grilled cheese and oh my! I had hearts for eyes - I was in love! I also had the raw nori wrap with a side of coconut aminos (per my request) and the french fries. I absolutely will be coming back. The restaurant is colorful and lively, the staff extremely friendly and eager to help and the food! Simply put, it's delicious. Made a day trip to Long Beach where we knew we would find a number of vegan establishments. Street parking easily available, we entered into this large open and calming space. You go right up to the counter to order and grab a number for them to serve right at your table. I got their hippy salad which was awesome, the crispy seasoned tempeh was amazing and really made the salad filling and textured with the crunch. I high recommend this salad and great deal for $10. One star knocked off for their tomato bisque soup, it was very watery and didn't give me the feels of a warm thick, hearty bowl of soup. Spiced aggressively it made my mouth burn a bit and was really hoping for a soup that was gonna warm my soul and not burn my mouth. Hubs had the Indian bowl which was tasty, chic pea curry with rice and greens. The samosa was ok, nothing special and is ordered individually. Let me just say that as a vegan I get excited to go out of town and find great spots. This my friend was not one of them. When we ordered, the male seems annoyed, or high, or both. Then we waited... And waited and waited for our food. All the while I watched several employees handle money then prep food and put their hands in the community chip bag, never washing their hands. I could see our food sitting on the counter after it was prepared. I heard the bell on two occasions and yet there it sat. I wanted to just grab it myself. The children's bean, rice and cheese was so bland that none of us to could bear to eat it. My husbands pb&j was gross... How do you screw that up?! My avocado jalapeño burger was ok. It was just wasn't hot anymore. We were initially excited to get a desert but after trying to eat there was no way we were going to spend anymore money. It is upsetting to write this because I really enjoyed eating here the first couple of times. However, the last few times have been very disappointing. Today, I walked in to get food to go. The cashier was lifeless and dull. The food (a hippy kale bowl and a bowl of soup) took over thirty minutes which was an extremely long time considering there was only four other customers inside who already had their food. The wait is just too long. I'm sure the food is probably made fresh, but it still shouldn't take that long. I've also tried ordering ahead of time, online. Unfortunately that didn't help at all. Gonna keep this review simple so I don't have to waste anymore of my time. If you're in the mood for a confrontational and potentially sociopathic cashier, then this is the place for you! All I tried was the tofu ice cream and a slice of blueberry pie, they were tasty but not something I'd go out of my way for again. If you actually have enough patience to wait 25 minutes for them to consider cutting a slice of their pre-made pie and putting it in the microwave to 30 seconds, AND THEN have to go remind them to actually follow through with that, because you know you payed for it, you just might like this place. I don't know what it is about vegan cafés in Long Beach, but they're either a hit or miss when it comes to customer service and this is without a doubt a miss. I was hungry and has just left Fingerprints, so I decided to stop by and grab something to eat. I was expecting it to be the typical vegan place with your lovely vegans in their hemp shoes and glasses sitting in the corner- and it was to some extent. I was quite surprised when I saw how homey it was. There were all kinds of people- from what seemed the community. It must be pretty good than, so I was sold. I ordered a ginger mint lemonade- with my sandwich of tomato, vegan mozzarella, and I forgot what else. (I'm not a good remember er of my orders) It was quick, and they came and served it to me. It was super creamy- which was weird for me because I didn't know what my vegan mozzarella was going to taste like. It ended up shocking me because it was super yummy. It was creamier than your regular mozzarella and complimented my sandwich perfectly. It was also pretty big, so I barely finished it- and the tortilla chips and salsa were delicious! I was addicted to the salsa, it was fresh, and clean looking. I don't know if that makes sense- but it was pretty good. I'd come back, the ambiance was nice and inviting- which sometimes can be rare. Excellent, excellent! I've passed this place numerous times on my way to Berlin and finally made a point to stop by and eat dinner her with a friend. I love the subtle hints of Indian flair to the cuisine at this restaurant. The free samosa--so good! (check in w/ yelp app) I ordered the black bean tacos and my friend ordered the Portobello burger. This place is wonderful if you're craving healthy, filling, and something different. It was my first time going this past week with a coworker on our lunch break. The place was moderately busy which made it possible to grab some lunch in a restaurant/ cafe vs fast food place. The atmosphere is bright and clean. I was impressed by the variety of food and snacks and beverages and desserts. The food was served timely and the servers were friendly and attentive. The food was incredibly filling. I was seriously stuffed from the Mediterranean wraps (2) that came with my order. My coworker had the signature burger, which once I tasted discovered was similar to the taste of a sloppy Joe. It's nice to see Long Beach have so many options for veggie eaters nowadays! My husband and I were really happy we found this particular place and will be returning when we visit this area again. I had the hippy salad which was generous in size and perfect in taste. My hub had the ahimsa salad with grilled seasonal veggies on top and loved it. They offer free samosas every time you check in here and I recommend getting yourself an order. The chutney is so good! Let me start out by saying i come to ahimsa often, and I really do enjoy the food and appreciate having a healthy and affordable food option. But after a number of less then pleasant experience, and reading reviews with similar experience I thought I should share why I'm likely not to visit here as often. I went to pick up an order I placed on yelp, and when I walked in I was not acknowledged at all for about 10 minutes and I was standing right next to the counter. I saw multiple employee walk right passed me and no one said "we will be right with you, hold on one moment". Finally when the cashier came to help me, he treated me as though I was a inconvenience and annoying him for being there. This may seem insignificant, but 1-i work in a very similar style restaurant and I know for a fact it isn't that hard to make a guest feel welcome even if you are busy (but there wasn't even a lot of people there so...) and 2- almost every time I visit ahimsa I experience the same treatment, and have read several reviews complaining about this as well. Time for management to do something about it, because it is definitely driving me, and other customers, away. Please talk to your employees. When I left and opened the burrito I had ordered, there was no salsa :/ again, I guess it's not that big of a deal. But the last time I ordered food, they forgot the papadums that came with my India bowl. Lastly, it always takes FOREVER to get your food. Even if I order online in advance, and even when there are only a couple people in the restaurant, prepare for 30 minutes+ wait for your burger or bowl or burrito. Again, makes it less likely for me to order from here when I am on the go. Hope some improvement happens, because this could be a worthy 4-5 star place. The interior of this restaurant is decorated so nicely from its beautiful murals to the eclectic style of furniture. When you walk in, you immediately feel the good vibes at this place. I found this place on yelp, and since it was close to my hotel, I ventured out. I'm not vegan, but I greatly appreciate vegan restaurants because 1. I don't have to ask about dairy (stupid allergy) and 2. I'm picky about meat sources so usually go vegetarian. I ordered a chicken and bacon bbq burger and omg!!! It's one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. I don't say that lightly; I've had a LOT of burgers, lol. We have a freezer stocked with local grass fed beef at home, I love Next Level Burgers (vegan), etc. It even had a nice amount of fresh avocado on it. I upgraded to fries because they use rice bran oil (nonGMO, yay!), and those were perfect too. My only complaint is that I ate too fast. Oh, and that I was too full to finish my fries and couldn't try a milkshake or their mozzarella sticks. I WANT mozzarella sticks, dang it!! So, there I am... 3 pm, still in bed, starving but too lazy to cook, that's when it hit me. Order from GrubHub! Much to my surprise I find a vegan joint on there; I was craving fresh and clean ingredients with a bountiful amount of flavor. This was right up my alley. I was so intrigued and enamored by the decor I decided I wanted to get the full Monty versus ordering it for delivery. I get in my car (still in pajamas), drive down to this joint, and manage to muster up enough energy to get to the counter. I'm greeted by a nice young girl, she's engaging to a certain extent and helps me make a decision on some grub. I end up ordering the Hippie Kale bowl on her recommendation; it was awesome! Still crunchy veggies, soft brown rice, steamed kale, tofu, cherry tomatoes, fresh slices of avocado, and some tahini sauce. The flavors were definitely hitting the right spot, I totally enjoyed it. I also ordered the raw nori wraps, these on their own are a 5, the sauce on the side was way too bland. I think perhaps something sweet, savory, and tangy would do the wraps some justice (maybe even something spicy!) also, another suggestion for a Pop of flavor would be pickled daikon (it's yellow) and some shiitake. Young coconut: I mean, it's a coconut. You can't really fuck it up. Desserts: after my meal I decided I wanted to try their desserts in the comfort of my home so I ordered some to go. Key lime cheesecake: 4 out of 5 stars. Tart and sweet, good texture, shredded coconut, and a nutty crust. This was pretty good, I enjoy lime flavored desserts so I was really looking forward to experiencing this. I'd order agains Blueberry pie: I love to bake pies so I must admit my expectations are high, especially after seeing the reviews. This was "Meh, ok." I wouldn't kick it out of bed, but I certainly wouldn't invite it over again. It's sweet but very much one note of flavor. It lacks a flavor component, maybe a pinch of salt? A dash of lime juice? I don't know, but it could do with a little more pizzazz. Another idea: key lime pie cheesecake layered with blueberry pie filling! Blueberry and lime makes a mighty combination, add a little mint and you've got yourself a winner. Ginger mint lemonade: tasty, refreshing, I'd order again and add some sparkling water. Also, since it was a to go order I would've enjoyed some ice in the cup. But hey, maybe I'm the weird one for wanting ice in my drink on a hot Long Beach day. Now, you must be asking yourself why 3 stars if the food is so great... Well, I'm not the first to mention it. The service is lackluster. My job = regional trainer. I get paid to train people on how to deliver amazing customer service. It's all about creating an experience for your clientele. If that experience is sharing healthy and wholesome food then the no brainer is to have people that provide healthy and wholesome service. Right? If not, then you're just another vegan joint. I don't really want to get into it because the truth is the service wasn't horrible, it was just non-existent. You have someone that walks into your place and order $40 worth of food just for herself, I'm giving you business... you're not doing me a favor. If I ask for a to go box, just give me the size I asked for, not the one you think is the one I need. And offer bags for gods sake, I shouldn't be playing Tetris with to-go containers because you don't have the foresight to offer a bag and because I feel like it would be a bother to ask for one. Why is that even a question a customer would think? Anywho, the food is good the service is subpar. Your focus should be the customers, not giggling with your coworker. If your conversation is loud enough that we all know the kind of guys you date, maybe you should turn up the music. I have tried to give this place the benefit of the doubt because its one of the few vegan places in long beach, but they just seem to miss the mark every time. The food is very lack luster and the service is not great. The only positive thing is they are very accommodating when they make a mistake ( which has been every time I've been there) Today I had Ahimsa Vegan Burger, which their home made patty taste a lot like a falafel and they forgot to bring my fries. Having a girlfriend who is vegetarian-going -on-vegan has its challenges. Thank the heavens for Ahisma (formerly Zephyr)! It's very, very difficult to find a healthy, organic, chemical-free, low fat, slow-food vegetarian restaurant with a large selection of varied and deliciously prepared food in Long Beach. Having sampled every vegetarian restaurant in this city, I can fairly authoritatively say that Ahisma is by far the best vegetarian restaurant Long Beach has to offer! It rocks! The recent change-over from Zephyr to Ahisma had me a little worried. I've been coming here for years, and for a few months it looked a little as if it was on the edge of going out of business. Phew! Dodged that bullet! Now Ahisma has a new, stylish look and seems to have fine tuned some of its changes so that now it really does seem all around improved. Still the same kind of great food, though. Really wanted to leave no stars, person behind the counter was rude. Ordered a smoothie that was the consistency of water, with zero flavor oh and it was lukewarm. Went back in to have it remade and he added " more banana and coconut milk" came out tasting worse. I've had this smoothie before and it was delicious the last two times. I have been here a few times and the food here is great! I've had the jalapeno avocado burger and the BLT. I'm going to try out their bowls next time. The guacamole, salsa and chips are so good. Service is a little slow, looks like there's only 3 people working. My first time here they prolly had me wait for 5-10 minutes before they took my order. I have also seen some people leaving after standing in line for a little bit. I recommend this place but just be patient if you come on a busy day or lunch hour. read more

I live a few blocks from Ahimsa but it took me 6 months to get here. I am glad I finally made it! I visited with a few fellow yogis after a handstand workshop. We had all worked up an appetite! I opted to get one of their bowls - the Grilled Veggie Bowl. They have a bunch of different ones and all come with a choice of organic tofu, organic tempeh or mock chicken. I got the tofu, but I really don't love tofu so will opt for the mock chicken next time. The zesty lemon dressing on it was awesome! Most of the bowls had the same ingredients (give or take a veggie) but the sauces were all very different and I was happy with my choice. **If you check in on Yelp, you can take advantage of a free samosa - it was delicious! I see other reviewers complaining about the slow service, something I did not experience. The servers were all friendly and I enjoyed the funky seating, almost like you are in someone's living room (we opted to sit on a couch!). I am by no means vegan. I truly enjoy rich foods of meat, starch and dairy so when my friend who is vegan brought me here I was very sure that it would be as bad as most of the places he has had me try. I however was surprisingly incorrect. The food was very flavorful and filling. My biggest surprise is the Ice Cream Deluxe which has no dairy but the taste and texture is equal to real ice cream. First Vegetarian place I've ever tried and it well enough. Very casual dining experience with a rustic decor. The large mural on the East wall is very colorful and beautiful. The Menu is actually on the South wall which has chalkboard black paint on which the menu is printed on. I shared the Fiesta Salad and the Thai Temple with my date and we left absolutely stuffed. Tons of black beans and carrot shavings on the Fiesta salad. The guacamole looked like it had been sitting for awhile but it was still tasty. They give you two dressings and the Creamy Spicy Peanut Dressing is insane. The beans are the only protein source but like I said, the plate comes loaded. 3/5 The Thai Temple bowl was by far the better dish. Plenty of rice, freshly grilled veggies, some faux fried chicken, and that same Peanut Sauce. Black sesame seeds, bean sprouts, and kale sit atop of everything. The only reason I deducted a star was for the long wait time. The place was half full and my wait time was more than twenty mins after ordering at the counter and taking my seat. The salad was made before the bowl but they waited for the bowl to bring both out. They should of brought the salad first. Affordable vegan food with some delicious options. I'm not a huge fan of fake meat. And that's not really where this place shines either. But if you're looking for delicious Smoothies, fries, samosas, and veggie burritos then you've gone to the right place. Ahimsa is one of those spots you drive by thinking "I wonder what kind of herbal chai tea those hippies are smoking?" But looks are deceiving. Everyone who works there is very down to earth and friendly. The music is always on point and the food is actually delicious! I highly suggest the organic fries, samosa, and Rueben sandwich. The tofu and tempeh is very tasty, especially the tempeh... it is succulent and has a good texture. I haven't tried the wraps or sandwiches yet, but the samosas are meh. We wanted to try the Spring rolls, but they don't make them anymore. The Vietnamese Rolls are very refreshing. They could be a meal by themselves, they're really large! The bowls are creative without being over the top. For the bowls, some bowls are far better than others. I tried the Fiesta bowl, and it's a little soggy with the tortilla chips in the bowl. I wish they were strips instead of whole chips! The grilled veggie bowl is quite tasty. The one criticism I have is with the quantity of sauce. They give you an amount that is obviously insufficient with the portion of the food. To top it off, the last time I went in, the server arbitrarily said "We charge $0.50 for each additional serving of sauce." Tacky. Please don't be stingy to locals who would walk to your place once a week, if it wasn't for the awkward lukewarm service. read more
