My relative had knee surgery. It was more complicated than most due to other health conditions. The rehab floor in Highland Hospital was newly remodeled and very clean. The food she was served as well as cafeteria food was better than most. Majority of the nurses were friendly, helpful and wonderful. A couple were not quick to respond and grumpy or not very compassionate. They forgot her meal the first night which was upsetting because she had not eaten in more than 24 hours and lots of pills in her stomach. They did their best to help find the right combination of medications during her stay. The surgeon did an excellent job and stopped by to check in. Just a few hours after surgery the physical therapist, occupational therapist and dietician stopped by also. Unfortunately she stayed longer than expected and was moved to a rehab facility due to her complicated recovery. But that had nothing to do with the surgeon or aftercare, just her other health complications that prolonged her getting up amd moving enough to go home. read more

Warning for Patients with Rare Conditions, Disabilities, or Trauma History I was recently treated at Highland Hospital while experiencing an autonomic crisis related to my Riley-Day Syndrome (Familial Dysautonomia)--a rare neurological condition that requires urgent, specialized care. Despite telling staff repeatedly that I was in crisis, I was dismissed, denied care, and discharged unsafely. The nursing staff falsely documented that I "transferred myself into a wheelchair without assistance." In reality, my brother physically lifted me into the wheelchair and into the car because I was unable to move safely. That's medical record falsification. I asked for a patient advocate multiple times, as is my legal right. I was told no one was available. That is a direct violation of The Joint Commission's requirements and NYS Patient Bill of Rights. I also asked for clear communication about my labs and vitals. I was denied access to my own medical information while in crisis. I was denied my legal right to submit a statement or correction to my record in their MyChart system. Rochester Regional allows this--why doesn't URMC? Is it to avoid accountability? Highland Hospital failed me. They ignored my diagnosis. They ignored my lived experience. They gaslit me and endangered my life. I'm filing formal complaints with: * The Joint Commission * NYS Office of Professional Medical Conduct * HHS Office for Civil Rights * Disability Rights NY * CMS If you are disabled, medically complex, or have a trauma history, be extremely cautious. Highland 5 West team recently cared for my mother. Friendly attentive care for the most part. They do use RN travelers, and for the most part, everyone was great. We had a hiccup with my mom being independent yet on bed restriction with alarm set. It was frustrating and caused anxiety for her to have to wait for help to go to bathroom. She waiting so long she had an accident. We reported it via patient relations and it was promptly investigated and attended to. read more

On February 3, Dr. Ginnetti replaced my hip and that same day I was up and walking (carefully of course), with little pain, and, as trained by a PT, I can go up stairs (with a cane). I am eating well, overall feeling great. The entire staff in the hospital were wonderful, caring, prompt when needed, always cheery and friendly! A few of the outstanding staff were Dr. Ginnetti, Bri, Brooke, Grace, and many others! A very supportive recuperation! The food was excellent, hot & nourishing (contrary to experience elsewhere!). Probably my craziest review I've done. I had knee replacement surgery today and was here for the dinner. For hospital food, I will give it a 3/5 (I could give it 4/5 but the Yelp Elite ppl might throw me off!) but for the care I got from the nurses, anesthesiologist, Doctor etc I give them a 5/5. Well I come here for a few reasons one my specialist is here another reason I had to take the husband to the ER. In all honesty the staff is top notch and I've never had an issue here. Parking is sometimes annoying even with a parking lot you may be driving around a bit. What isgood is if you need labs done, tests and etc most of them can be taken care of here. Sometimes waiting to check in can be a real pain. Other than that, they have a small gift shop, coffee shop (staff can be slightly annoyed) they have a chapel and etc. Its a hospital people it's gonna be a different experience for everyone. ZERO Stars should be a choice. If you want your elderly love one to die miserably for no reason, then this is the hospital for you. The 7th floor geriatric staff is the worst, not a person there cares about their job, or the people they are getting paid to care for. 1 year ago my father was admitted for dehydration, within a day or two he perked up with an IV, was taken off his IV, and 9 days later he was dead. 9 days of sitting there hooked up to nothing. Being served jello, petrified canned beans, and very little water. His requests for water were constant, and constantly ignored. The witch at the desk could not have been more unpleasant, questions and requests went unanswered. Everyday it seemed a new MD would take over, not knowing what the last doc was doing, but Hey!, they wouldn't be there the next day so who's cares right? The day Dad died, we visited and stayed with him till 1:30pm or so. Left being told "he's going to rehab, we are waiting for a spot to open", the same thing we heard for 8 days before. That night @ 12:40AM we got a call saying he was dead. We are positive he had been dead for several hours, and was left for the night shift to deal with. After that 5 individual phone calls were made to get some info on why he died, why we didn't get notified that he was taking a turn for the worst, and how can we recover the few personal things. Not one doctor, nurse, or social worker returned any of our calls. However when he was admitted that social worker was up our stuff for hours about Dads finances, insurances, and savings. I guess the staff there is getting paid well, and that's the only reason they go to work. Zero stars. read more

I recently had the need visit this hospital and was disgusted to see the check in person wearing a paper face mask. Unable to hear or understand her, she needed to pull down her bacteria, mold, spit, virus, snot, and food particle ridden, USELESS piece of paper with her fingers to ask for our ID's which she then proceeded to take from us with those same fingers, then passed them back with visitor passes all handled with those same bacteria, snot, spit, etc. ridden fingers and then pushed her mask back up so she wasn't understandable anymore... Masks are contaminated and belong in a biohazard bag- they have no place anywhere in ANY clean area of a healthcare facility especially. Only a drooling moron with no healthcare training could possibly not understand the risk you are exposing your patients and visitors to by allowing anyone to walk around spreading that contamination. It is disgusting and you should be shut down for it- I have zero trust in any healthcare "professional" that would allow this to go on. read more

This the worst hospital ever. I took my mother there years ago as she was in severe pain for spine compression. The nurses were so lazy that they would not respond to the call button and would call into her room when we told them she had a hearing problem and would not be able to hear them. We had to constantly go to the desk and get them to get up and come in and give her their medication. This was in the elder care unit. Cindy Becker and her management team do not care one bit about patients as long as they collect their money. Shame on you all!! read more

A review in real time of Rochester's very own Shutter Island. My date has MRSA. This can cause sepsis and death. Urgent care urged us to get to ED bc the scary rate of this thing growing. We arrive at Highland ED and answer all the registration questions and wait in the gross waiting room. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. Did I mention we were left to wait? We literally watched other people come into the waiting room, get called in and released to go home all while we're still waiting. An outrageously annoying gaggle of millennials came in post car accident - one of them thought she might have broken her finger- they were giddy with car accident excitement. It was like being stuck in the middle of a slumber party squeal fest. THESE GIRLS WENT IN BEFORE US. Let me repeat - my date has MRSA a life threatening infection that spreads quickly - we had been waiting for 2 hours when the millennial slumber party slipped in ahead of us with her taped up pinky. Ok - 3 hours of waiting and we finally get a bed /shared room. It took a full hour before an RN came to see us. She asked how his big bite was?!?!? BUG BITE? I explained that he has MRSA and it's getting worse since we've been here and no doctors have even glanced our way. OH! Not a bug bite? MRSA - oh I'll be sure to tell the doctors. But first let me put in this random IV and took some blood. Doctor finally comes in 1 1/2 hours after we've been in the bed and asks "So you've got a bug bite?" ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I was in ED observation twice for a kidney stone attack in November. I can't say enough about the care I got by the nurses - they were attentive and caring and the second time I was in they really fought to get me out of the area that was contagious and I will never forget that. I was on a ton of pain medication and they were really watching out for me. *The only thing that I have to say is that one person should be allowed to go back with patients in ED. That rule has to change. I was to the point I could not walk and throwing up I was in so much pain and my husband really need to be with me. They basically threw him out when he did not want to leave me because I was going to faint. Security went overboard in making him leave. Sort of sad state we were in during COVID. Now is the time to change that. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. Their current protocol is no visitors in the waiting room. After an hour I was approached by security guard #1 who gave me a visitor bracelet and allowed me to stay. Half hour later I'm approached by the wannabe cop who has been there a month. He was curt and told me I could not be in there and to wait elsewhere. Meanwhile I could point out every non patient waiting with their ill family member. My mom went in for chest pains and possible heart attack per her doctors request. She is also a very high risk patient with multiple chronic illnesses. After waiting 6 hours she noticed non acute patients being escorted to a bed to be seen. She approached the triage nurse who assured her she had not been forgotten. More and more patients who hadn't been waiting for more than 2 hours continued to be tended to before her. Again she approached the triage nurse and explained she would no longer wait as she was obviously not a priority. My mom was then approached by security who said "so you're not a patient anymore so you don't need to be in here right?", so eager to toss her out the door. Did I mention a doctor came out to the waiting room to evaluate a patient violating HIPPA? This hospital seriously needs reevaluating as it seems they have NO clue what's going on. Security needs to focus more on kicking out obscene patients who are a disturbance to those who are seriously ill and follow protocol with EVERYONE. Not just pick and choose what they want to deal with. I'm so furious it took all of me not to enter the ER and cause a scene. I will be forwarding this experience to someone higher up at Highland and do not recommend wasting your time there. You could die in the waiting room and no one would even bat an eye! read more

I went to the Emergency Department at Highland on a super snowy afternoon for a minor (but bloody) injury and was treated quickly and compassionately. I was greeted, triaged, stitched and discharged in just about an hour. They did an awesome job! It's easy to assume that you'll be in the ER all day when you go, but this was not the case. Randomly another person was in with a dog who was injured too and the staff made sure the dog was able to get care as well! I highly recommend Highland for your stupid injury needs! read more

Friend/roommate went in cause he has a heart condition and was having trouble breathing. He left the emergency department super late at night and left a bookbag there. It had important stuff in it including an epi pen. He tried going there to get it, they told him they didn't have it. I tried calling the lost and found and they also claim they have nothing like it... I don't know how they manage to lose a whole bookbag. read more

We had our mother in hospice care and i have to say that the nurses and techs were very attentive during this difficult time.

This was the worse ER visit. The staff was very rude and the accommodations were worse. They were slow and very inattentive. The provider was rude and defensive when questions were asked. They made my daughter cry and didn't even care. They set her up in an area with chairs and did not allow me to sit with her. A very horrible experience for a sick person. read more

The worst E.D. department I have ever been to. I took a friend there last week and he had a 4 hour wait in the lobby. He was brought in by ambulance but that didn't matter to these people. I asked the woman on the window a question and she was very nasty and had a huge attitude. When he was finally seen by a P.A. it was in the hallway. P.A. could of cared less about helping my friend and was more concerned with getting him out of there as soon as he could. Bedside manor was poor and again, another person with an attitude. I know this place was very busy that day but why the attitudes! This use to be such a nice hospital until it was taken over by the U of R. Having a major surgery at Highland was a breeze. Everyone, and there are tons of them, we're not just the nicest people in the word but every one of them is super competent and attentive. They made this stay so comfortable and easy. And the food is pretty good too! read more

Outstanding care and the food wasnt too bad either! We just had our first child here and we cant think of anything they could have done better. Naturally when your girlfriend is pregnant with your first child you hear all kinds of horror stories but we're both ecstatic to say none of them were true with Highland! Every member of the stuff was courteous and knowledgeable. The nurse that worked with us the majority of the time (an experienced woman named Denise) was extremely helpful and made sure everything went smoothly. With her gentle (yet firm) guidance, my girlfriend only had to push for twenty minutes before we met our lil' guy! The same goes for post-natal care. From the moment we got there we made it clear we wanted to leave ASAP and they all made it so we could leave as soon as both of them (GF and son) met the health requirements. Which was about 24hrs after he was born. I cannot stress enough HAVE YOUR BABY DELIVERED HERE! read more

Dr. Circe was amazing in her relentless pursuit coming up with answers with impeccable bed side manors with extreme confidence. My review for this hospital is not good at all. My 26 year daughter went in there for an asthma attack, they over medicated her with opiates non stop for days. Mind you she was on a ventilator and only weighed 100 pounds. Again, 6 days consistently which caused brain damage and ultimate death. They do not know what they are doing! read more

Am here now, have heart issues and infection causing fever, and am shocked at how poorly this place is run. Very cold, unprofessional staff and no sense of caring about anyone here other than just being a number and herded through like cattle. Never had a nurse go so incredibly slow to hook me up for an EKG while I was short of breath, dizzy, very fast heart rate I could feel, and pain on my left side on my upper back...and as my records they have there show I've already had two minor heart attacks in the past and a coronary artery blockage yet I have not been seen by a doctor here in over five hours waiting in their waiting room. I arrived here by ambulance as Urgent Care in Pittsford sent me here with fever, fast heart rate etc with serious UTI infection my MD thinks might be sepsis which can be fatal, and still not seen here by anyone! I ask once politely just now at hour five of waiting and am told by nurse at registration desk quite rudely "no idea at all!" This is a heartless place and I'm feeling much sicker and far worse as I sit here. Avoid it!!! read more

My mother was taken to the Highland Hospital ED for severe pain from compression fractures. She waited in the waiting area for quite a while (in considerable pain) before my she was brought back to be examined. She was finally made comfortable and had a good evening group (doctor, nurse, and PCT) for her care. I was so thankful that I stayed with my mother during the night because the night shift nurse was negligent in controlling my mother's pain, even though the physician told me that my mother could be medicated for pain when she needed it. The nurse ignored my consistent request for my mother to be medicated, as my mother paced up and down the hallway with tears in her eyes. I gently rubbed her back, trying to provide some relief, which was not very effective. The nurse was rude, and showed no empathy for our situation. She told me that she was going to get the physician, but then never came back, or communicated to me what the physician said. Of course, I didn't see the doctor at any point during the night (only at the beginning of the shift when I was told my mother could be medicated for pain when she needed it). My mother was going into palliative care for pain control the next day and the night shift doctor and nurse were aware of that. My mother's blood pressure was extremely high (probably from her pain level) and that was not addressed either. The nurse (Julianna) made that night total hell for me and my mother. What ever issue she may have had that night, she took it out on my mom...and I will NEVER forget it! My mother ended up going into a coma-like state the next morning. She stayed that way until she passed away four days later. I hope Julianna gets the education she desperately needs. I blame her for her lack of attention regarding my mother's dire need for pain relief. God forgive me, but I would like this awful nurse to experience the kind of care one day that she provided to my mother....and realize what she did, because I really don't think she has a clue. This place is a joke. Going on 8 hours of waiting without getting anywhere. Staff doesn't check on the patient for hours. It took an hour and ten minutes to get simple ibuprofen for pain. I was admitted through emergency last week. The surgical resident recommended surgery the next day. The next day, I was told they wanted to see if I could pass the stone. On Friday I was released with pain killers and told to pass the stone at home. On Monday I had a follow up appointment with a doctor at Strong. Never again if we can help it. Visiting nurse told us to take father to Highland ER. His doctors work out of Highland. Figured it might be best so that information would get to the doctors quicker and easier. Father has heart issues and is diabetic and requires no sodium or as low as you can get. First the hospital is a good 15 minute drive from where he is (and us). We have a good hospital within 5 minutes. But no, went to Highland. In ER for a few hours testing and such. Ask for some food as he had no lunch and they go to a vending machine and give him a sandwich with lunch meat and a bag of pretzels. Ummm no sodium people? Later the doctor says they will probably send him home. We ask to see his cardiologist who later arrives and says they will admit him In room at 6:30 he needs dinner and we are told kitchen is closed, maybe we can run to Subway or somewhere... Outside the room it smelled or urine and poop All week, his meals are more or less against his diet requirements. All week the area smelled rather funky. At end of week when he is released we get conflicting requirements. First he will need oxygen at home, then later they say no, he wont The people were nice and pretty much did their jobs, but the lack of information for his requirements was shocking. For a place that has his records and doctors, this is inexcusable. read more

Incredibly long wait times. Came in at 12am, left at 9am. Staff was decent, but wait times are stupidly long.

I would like to start that Highland Hospital has violated the laws of the ADA and Service Animals. I received horrendous care at Highland. I was brought to the ER by a neighbor with high fevers, blacking out / severe dizziness. I have a central line and have had Sepsis 3 times in the past. They made me wait in the waiting room for at least 20 minutes. The reason I had not been brought by ambulance....because it would have taken longer for someone to get to me then it did to reach the hospital. Also, who can actually afford an ambulance?! Line cultures were done, and I was given a dose of IV medication which really helped the dizziness. I was told that I needed to stay, although at the time there was surprisingly no indication of infection. I was also told that I was too ill to be able to keep my service dog with me. I informed them that I did not have anyone in the area that would be able to assist me with him. My family was out of town, and I know very few people as I have only returned to Rochester after several years on the West coast. I was told to phone the ER and speak to a PA or Dr if there were any changes. Later in the early morning when I returned to my home, I had a fever that reached 102.8. I phoned the ER and they told me to call my Dr. My Dr. never returning any message or phone call is a whole separate issue. I was called Saturday afternoon, and was told to return to Highland immediately as my blood cultures had already come back positive with Gram Negative bacteria. By no fault of Highland, I have extreme White Coat Syndrome / Medical PTSD after spending the last several years in hospitals for extended periods of time with failing health. My anxiety on top of being incredibly ill was really hard for me to deal with. Additionally, the only support I had was that of my Service Animal. They made such a fuss about him, they had Social Workers, and nasty nurses tell me he could not stay. Mind you, these people only hours earlier were asking if they could touch him and play / speak with him. I was in the ER for over 6 hours with no distribution of antibiotics, fluids, nothing. I already have home health services and begged them to set up what I would need at home. The point of home health is to keep someone with complex health issues out of the hospital. The ER nurse told me they were closed, and that the company would not be able to help me until Monday. Well, there is a thing known as after hours. I phoned the company myself and they said that they had not been contacted by anyone and to give them the following number. I waited three hours before anyone came back to see me. Of course it was an unreasonable hour to request that the pharmacy or a nurse help me. I was brought up to the 7th floor, West. The lack of care is only classifiable as neglect. They put me in a private room (thank God), at the very end of the hall. Because of my dog, which is 20 lbs, hypoallergenic, and incredibly well behaved / calm, my room was not serviced once. I was kept there for four days. My bedding was never changed. The bathroom was never cleaned. I requested several times to be moved because there was a mentally ill person in the room next to me that shouted "HEY," literally every 5-7 seconds of the waking day, and most of the evening. This person was also on droplet isolation, and his door was left open. Even with my door closed I could hear this. The rest of the night and Sunday were fine compared to what went on when the Monday morning shift came on. My nurse, Kate, went out of her way to help me on Sunday. There were no issues with my meds needing to be given via J-tube, employees went out of their way to try to make me have a little bit of an easier time, they offered to help with my dog, etc. As soon as Monday morning rolled around, after the second night of having a nurse that was constantly turning the lights on, talking to me, and adjusting the bed (after I requested that she not touch it), I was treated with an unacceptable amount of disrespect. The charge nurse / nurse manager, had informed her staff from what I was told, to not assist me in any way. I have been in hospitals across the country (Cleveland Clinic, UCSF), the staff at these institutions have gone out of their way to make things easier. There isn't much room left... I would wait more than 40 minutes for a response to the nurse call button, and I would have to call at least 3 -4 times, so they stopped answering it. After I managed to get my personal physician involved, I was able to go home to have the remainder of treatment. I was given a packet by the same nurse manager / charge nurse giving me rules about animals. She came and told me when things were already high stress that I need to provide all of his immunizations records and certifications. The "policy handbook," had she looked at it applies to animals, specifically says, "Not Service Animals." Formal complaint to be filed. read more

I been in many hospitals and had many surgeries and this was by far the worst experience I've every had. I had GI surgery a few days ago and I'm still be shock on how bad the care was. I had requested a private room before surgery I was told one was available for a extra 40.00 a day. I paid the fee. I woke up to find out I was in a semi private near the door with the room mate from hell. I could put up with no private room and having the noise from people coming in and out of the room but the nurses would not do anything to assist me with this clearly mentally ill, very loud woman who complained about everything. She would not cooperate with the doctors or nurses. No matter what they did for her she complained. She complained that she didn't get grapes she requested she instead she got fruit cocktail. The fish was too salty, she didn't get mashed potatoes instead she got baked. She even got on the phone to the cafe and complained. She wouldn't get out of bed and threatened to pee her bed on purpose. She refused to go to PT so they had to do at her bedside. She accused me of getting her trays when I couldn't eat anything. They are labeled so that was not true. I was suppose to be a liquid diet and they were sending meat and huge bagels. I didn't complain I just didn't eat it. Nurses did not assist me with walking and told me I had to eat the meals. If I did eat the meals I would have bled to death- Duh I had surgery on my stomach and throat! No assist with washing. I asked for ear plugs twice because the woman was so loud. I developed a migraine and fever from all the stress. I begged to be moved but was told they would check. No one got back to me. Even when I started to cry the nurses with just roll their eyes in at what I had to experience but did nothing. I finally had to sit in the waiting room until my discharge papers were ready because I couldn't take it any longer. I told the nurse when I was leaving that this women should not have a room mate. No response. No I'm sorry you had to experience that. I even refused a wheelchair and limped out holding my swollen stomach so I wouldn't have to wait for a wheelchair. I just had to get out of there. I feel so sorry for the next patient who has to experience this. I'm pretty sure they will put some poor soul in there. Clearly this hospital does not care about patient satisfaction. I only went there because that's the only hospital my specialist operates at. There are part of Strong hospital which also scores very poorly with patient satisfaction. I think hospitals like this should be fined for bad care or copays returned. I'm filing a compliant with the hospital but I'm sure it will fall on deaf ears. There has to be away of waking them up and making them accountable. I think more hospitals should be like Unity Health System because they make patient care a top priority. I don't expect perfection but honestly my dog gets much better care than this. read more
