Went on a Friday night, they were busy but since we were only two we were seated immediately. Got the indecision plate to start which was fresh, delicious and a lot of food. Husband and I split the fish and chips and warm spinach salad. Fish and chips were excellent; second best only to the fish and chips I had in England. I should also add I don't particularly like fish. Warm spinach salad was also excellent, but how exciting can a salad really be? Duck confit in the salad was really good. I will be back. i have been to Highland Local a few times. over all the food was good. the service on the other hand has always been less then spectacular. on one occasions we waited for an hour before our order was taken. the other times the server was non existent. The techno crap music from the kitchen over powered the music in the bar.This greatly detracted from our over all experience. we did say something to our server but they seemed not to care. we could not figure out why there was some drunk person controlling the music in the bar. We thought he was the owner till the server told us otherwise. read more

Spent a fun lunch on St Paddy's Day at Highland Local with my best friend. The Guinness was cold and creamy, and the crispy brussels sprouts with goat cheese and bacon were delicious! I asked for a bit of chicken to be added so I could make this wonderful dish a fulfilling meal, and the friendly staff were more than happy to oblige. My mom's visitation was at Donaldson Funeral Home in Clarksville. There was a 2 hour break between the afternoon and evening viewings, so my siblings and our families went here for a snack and a beer. A large group of us showed up with no notice, but the staff took it in stride. They had a long table to accommodate our party and service was prompt and friendly. I had nachos with delicious beer cheese and a fresh draft. Several in our group raved about the grilled cheese sandwich. They were even completely cool about us bringing a birthday cake in from outside. I loved the family feel of this place and I can't wait to come back with my husband and kids for dinner. Got a promotion to check this place out. Two of us arrived around 6:15. After about 15 minutes later a waitress came to us and asked for drinks. Waited for another 20 mins for the drinks. We ordered two grilled cheese sandwiches with onion rings around 6:45. We waited and waited, watching other patrons who came after us got their meals. After waiting for an hour, I approached to the manager asking why it took too long. She said it was a back order which obviously was full of BS. She said they would be ready in five mins. My wife and I are food snobs. Not gonna lie. We're often disappointed. We have traveled the world eating some incredible stuff. In fact, my wife, who is Irish/Italian and has lived in both countries, swears there's no point in ordering fish and chips outside of Ireland. I can't believe how overrated this place is on Yelp. It is leaning heavily on the good will of the Baltimore restaurant. Walking in the front door, the first thing I noticed was how inefficiently the space had been utilized. Adjacent to the bar itself, there were two massive hightop tables arraigned in an L-shape. These two tables made up probably half of the total available seating in the establishment, and while that would be fine for a night of drinking, it was far less ideal to be seated community-style when trying to have dinner with the family. Design aside, the restaurant was horribly understaffed. For a full dining room, there was only one waitress, the bartender, and a manager. Naturally, service was sluggish (even for beer -- this was compounded by the fact that the bartender had to leave the bar to serve tables). The food bordered on unpalatable. They overcooked the tenderloins past the point of well-done but plated the burger nearly raw. Even the dessert, the apple/ice cream dish, had a hint of charring and appeared to be visibly burnt. I might give it another try because I have always enjoyed the Mt. Vernon location, but the licenser or franchiser (or whoever gave the Brewer's Art name to this location) needs to seriously consider whether this venue is harming the brand. read more

Great little place in Highland. Enjoyed the food and service. Portions are nice too. Had the Brussels sprout appetizer which was tasty and the sprouts were crispy. In our party two had the fish and chips and said it was really good along with the coleslaw. One had the French dip which was lean and tender-note the French dip comes with onions and I had the Shepards pie which is an appetizer but plenty big enough. The shepherds pie comes with gravy on top but if you like it more traditional ask for it without or the gravy on the side. It was good made with ground beef and vegetables. The ice tea was fresh brewed! All in all a great place with a nice bar and seating nicely spaced. read more

Cuban Sandwich - 5/5 - this is a top 2 Cubano sandwich I've ever had. The ham they use is amazing. The pork is so well seasoned and cooked well. The bread is perfectly cooked with crispy edges. The pickles and mustard are the perfect amount. I'm so sad it's seasonal. White bean chili - 5/5 - another amazingly delicious seasonal dish. Creamy broth with chicken chunks, corn, and tortilla strips included. Topped with sour cream and cilantro which would be amazing to have with every bite. Service - 5/5 - always super friendly. Thank you Brewers Art Tavern for making this space shine! Thankfully, they took over the location that was formerly home to the Twist & Turn Tavern followed by the unfortunate Highland Tavern. I don't want to jinx it but it feels like the third time is a charm here. They're exactly what this area has needed. Overall great food and vibe yet with a unique and local twist. We were here on the Wednesday night after they opened and the place was packed. Literally only two tables left around 8pm. Everything went smoothly and service was on point. I was expecting hiccups as that's usually the case as a new restaurant tries to find their groove...but there weren't any so props for that! Their drink selection is awesome and includes some local favorites in terms of beer. They have a good number of homemade cocktails and wine options for those wanting something other than beer. So no need to worry it's not an overly beer heavy type of place. We started out with the Malted Everything Pretzel (served with beer cheese and mustard) and it was pretty darn incredible. I don't usually like "everything" pretzels or bagels but this might have changed my mind on that. Next up was the French Dip which was also a culinary slam dunk in my book. It wasn't super heavy like some tend to be. My leftovers were equally as tasty the next day for lunch. For once I don't really have anything bad to say. Sorry to say we had a very disappointing experience. First impression was we noticed seating outside with pub stools (no backs) that had a very small sized seat for little rear ends. Not comfy looking so we skipped that choice. Inside was clean and inviting with nice decorations. Very spacious & open. A long table is in the middle of the room with steel bar stools & no backs again. No thanks! We sat at the bar which had seats w/backs but no cushioning. We noticed they have regular tables w/cushioned seating. That's probably your best choice. Great beer selection so we ordered a few that were served nice & cold. Good job on that...Awesome! We ordered apps first. Triple fried Chicken wings...1/2 Thai Chili flavor & the others Old Bay. The Thai wings were really good but the others were way over spiced with Old Bay seasoning. Too salty and not enjoyable. Less is more when it comes to Old Bay. The big problem is our wings came out with our lunch sandwiches. WTH? Normally the apps are first, then the entrees. Our sandwiches were the French Dip & Beazley Fried Chicken both with a side of hand cut rosemary-garlic fries. The fries were cold and had way too much flavor of rosemary & garlic, no potato flavor at all! Who serves cold French fries? Could not eat them. Big fail! The French Dip was served warm, not hot with a small serving of somewhat bland beef broth. That broth needs improvement to help with the beef flavor of the meat. I've had much better at other lesser known places. The chicken breast was huge but had a thick layer of fried breading that was over done to where it had burned sections all over the edges. Not good at all. The worst part of our lunch was the bill. $65.00! 3 small beers were $8 each 4 salty & 4 good wings were $10 French Dip w/cold fries $15 Chicken breast sandwich w/cold fries $13 This was on a slow Sunday when hardly anyone was there. Overall impression was the prices are way too high for the average/low quality of food served. The furniture is terrible. Sorry to say this is not a good place for even decent food especially for the prices. Management needs to regroup & reconsider the uncomfortable furniture & especially get a better handle on the food quality & pricing. Not sure they will last if this is the best they can do. I hope this place stays open, because it's amazing! Finally a well-run restaurant with phenomenal food. So far I've had the spinach and duck salad, and a burger on two separate occasions. Both were equally amazing. The spinach and duck salad: warm duck over baby spinach with a "to die for" vinaigrette. Burger: moist, well seasoned fresh ground beef, and the brioche bread was buttery soft. My boyfriend ate half and was fawning over it. Not to mention the service! Everything was amazing from the second we walked in, til the second we left. The management, servers and bartenders are top notch. They obviously care about their patrons and their experience while dining here. We really enjoyed ourselves, we will be back soon! read more

A great addition to the area! There is more bar seating (high tops and yes, metal bar stools without a back) and only a few traditional tables...the long, mixed guest bar tables speak to the "tavern" aspect! The food was excellent; mixed drinks good, the wine was enjoyable and well priced. Both the bartender and our server were friendly and efficient. My only suggestion is that two bar stools be removed from the bar. Although it may be a "tavern" I don't really want to be that close to the other guest sitting next to me! You actually have to pull the stool straight back and then maneuver/scoot straight forward to get back up to the bar itself. As someone else mentioned - it is a bit loud, so not the best place if you are looking for a quiet dinner. read more

After moving away from Mount Vernon, I found few opportunities to visit the original Brewer's Art, but am thrilled to have this location nearby. The food is solid and the beers are as good as always. I am disappointed that the beers are so pricey. I felt like the snifters are smaller than the OG location's goblets and the very same Resurrection can be had for less at other Howard County bars. After paying $7 for one at The Brewer's Art Tavern, I got one for $5.50, the very same night, just up the road. read more

Found this place by recommendation from a local friend. We are from out of town and wanted to eat at a local place with a small town feel. Highland Local hit the mark on everything! My wife and I split the Fish and Chips with the Pretzel and the Brie/raspberry bite. Once the food came out, we were amazed by the presentation. It was so good. The pretzel, along with the beer cheese, was extremely savory and delicious. The brie and raspberry bites were super crispy and flaky. Then we got to our main course! The Fish and chips were amazing. Super crisp and simply prepared well. We also had a chance to talk to the owner, Jen! She was very hospitable and made us feel like we've known each other for years. If you patron this place and something isn't to your expectation, she will always make it right as long as you let them know. Our experience was excellent, and I highly recommend Highland Local!
