    Corned Beef Hash
    Julie Y.

This is a small cafe located in Tosa that seems popular with the locals! Lots of families and young kids here eating brunch. Service was alright, since they seemed fairly busy. I ordered the corned beef hash and I recommend you order something else from the menu. The chunks of beef were massive and very difficult to chew through. You do get a good amount of food for the price though.

Haven't been in for a long time but I loved this place! The pancakes and hot chocolate were always particularly good! I like their creative entrees! Nice location!

I came at prime brunch time and was welcomed warmly by both the barista behind the counter and also a waitress when I transitioned into the dining area. The person I was with and I had a lot to chat about and our waitress came back like three times before we finally ordered our drinks; she was so kind and didn't pressure us to keep it moving. My Bloody Mary was good: it included a huge pickle and a chaser. I got the spicy chorizo hash and it was huge; the potatoes aren't crispy though--that's the only thing I wished were different. The sourdough toast was perfect and I'd come back again because everything on the menu looked really good!

First time trying this restaurant. Stopped here for breakfast. Place was so charming! Staff was friendly and food was amazing. Would definitely go again.

    First view, I like it.

I have had this place bookmarked for a long time and I have called over the years to ask if the corn beef was available that day and I was always told no, the day I finally stop over and in no mood for corn beef hash it's on the specials menu, dam it. The place is on the corner with tons of old school charm and a nice outdoor patio with a little bar up front. The back has a coffee/beverage bar wide open to the patio which was cool. The menu didn't exactly have what I wanted but the Highlands ham and eggs sounded good some what but I asked if I could tweak it because I didn't want beer battered eggs and I have been eating ham all week. They gladly let me substitute sausage links and sunny side up eggs which was what I was more in the mood for. The service was good with no issues and the food came fast and hot. My plate looked fantastic with perfect sunny side up eggs that had huge yokes over a vegetable hash with five sausage links. The eggs were tasty and hit the spot with all that good yoke soaking into the hash, next time the battered eggs. The sausage links were on the lean side so not greasy at all and average but not bad. The veggie hash was no joke and had tons of assorted veggies/potatoes to my surprise, no skimping here. My breakfast was a little different but it was very good. Overall this was a nice old school place to have a nice relaxing breakfast with the surprisingly good veggie hash, can't wait to get the corn beef hash in the future. I don't hand out that rare 5th star too often unless I feel like it was really deserved, 4 is really good from me but they get the 5 star today. I like the menu but when I finally got over I wanted something different and they gladly accommodated me and didn't charge me any up fees for completely changing the dish and getting it right , 2-3 sausage links would have been fine, 5 was more than I ever expected so thank you for a great first impression.

Great brunch food! I ordered the veggie has with egg over medium half order. I liked the half order option and able to try my friend's red velvet French toast! I would recommend getting both! The food tasted delish and not Bland at all! I came in with a group and they were able to accommodate us immediately. Food was ready in less than 10-15mins! I want to keep this place hush hush because it wasn't crowded, but I wanna make sure others know it's a good place to go to! Servers were friendly and fast, topped off my coffee frequently. The only downside that I could recommend is to serve the drinking water without straws. Straws are not needed, they are not recyclable; that applies to a lot of restaurants though. Overall great experience, great food, and coffee!

We just had lunch (on Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012) in the newly expanded/remodeled Highlands Cafe. The new space has floor to ceiling glass windows that on this beautiful (albeit it cold) winter day was allowing warm, streaming sunshine in to naturally light and heat up the space. We were surprised to find out that part of the addition contains a full service cocktail/beer/wine bar. We had two of their "signature" sandwiches, a chicken bruschetta and a pancetta BLT that had lots of good stuff inside, including avocado. The sandwiches were outstanding. Highlands Cafe is a wonderful restaurant addition to Vliet Street in the Washington Heights/Highlands neighborhood. I believe this place is going to be very, very popular.

We ate brunch outside here on a nice day in early October. There was only one other couple sitting outside so we had plenty of room to social distance. The staff was extremely nice and even gave our dogs treats. The steak and pancetta hash was flavorful and chock full of veggies. The steak was a little overdone but it was fine in a hash. The Bloody Mary was well spiced and not too hot. The biscuits and gravy were simple but filling and comforting.

West coast breakfast sammie & the red velvet French toast
    Sarah E.

We had a great experience at Highlands. Our server, Kobe, was pleasant and a great host. We ordered the red velvet French toast and the west coast breakfast sammie, both of them were amazing! The food was ready fast and the prices were reasonable. The portion sizes were perfect. It was a perfect Sunday morning breakfast stop! If you're craving a sweet meal, order the red velvet French toast and you will NOT be disappointed. 10/10!

Their website has a popup on the home page saying it comes with fried haddock, potato pancakes, applesauce, and rye bread, but the popup doesn't list the price and it isn't available through the online ordering function. I ended up calling in an order to go, substituting wheat bread for the rye, and also added a piece of lemon ginger coffee cake. The lemon ginger coffee cake tasted fine, but man was it dry. Like Sahara Desert dry. Maybe this was an anomaly and their other baked goods are better, but I'd be hesitant to try them based on this coffee cake. Even though the website says the side is potato pancakes with applesauce, my fish fry came with fries. They ended up being the best part of the meal, which I certainly wasn't expecting. Still, I was disappointed cause I prefer potato pancakes and was given their inclusion as an expectation. The wheat bread itself was ok, but the butter was oddly unsalted. The fish, of which there was three pieces, was battered with a hint of beer, but like the butter for the bread there was no salt to speak of in the batter. As much as I didn't enjoy the unsalted butter for the bread, not having salt in the batter for the fish managed to be more unpleasant. Maybe Blue's Egg should just stick with serving breakfast items instead of adding something temporary that they clearly aren't pros at.

The village itself is already beautiful, but the cozy ambience of the restaurant definitely added to the wonderful dining experience. Upon entering, you're greeted and shown to your seat. The restaurant has a huge selection of beers and drinks, in addition to the delicious selection of dishes. I had a local beer, which was recommended by our server. He explained the two beers I was choosing between, even offering a sample of for both (which was a huge plus). I ended up going with the Lowlander Oranje (which is a local beer). The beer starts off a bit bitter but settles into a clean taste that really paired well with all the dishes we ordered. They also have a happy hour during the weekdays from 3PM - 5PM, which gives you 50% off local beers. So, if you have the time, make sure to check that out. We ordered the Buckatabon Cheese Curds (a must in WI), which are made from Meunster cheese, Bruschetta Flatbread (which includes goat cheese spread), and the Mussels (served with a sliced toasted baguette). Everything was absolutely delicious. The flatbread was definitely a pleasant surprise, while the mussels were a show stealer. The baguette definitely pairs well with the mussels which sit in a delicious "broth" that is extremely flavorful. As for parking, you will have to look for street parking (2-hour parking), but if you're going during the weekdays, it shouldn't be an issue. During busier times, they do have a public parking lot a few doors down from the restaurant, which charges about $10 for the first hour and an additional charge after that. When I visit WI next time, I will make sure to stop by again to try the other local beers and dishes. 5 stars all the way!

Food: They have a large selection of breakfast pastries, including scones, cinnamon rolls, hand pies, and more. There are also some savory items, such as a rosemary biscuit. It was a tough choice, but when in doubt, I go for a scone, and they had a Maple Cinnamon one. I had it warmed up a bit, and it was delicious. These scones are not muffins in disguise, which means the texture is a bit drier and more crumbly--perfect alongside a hot beverage. For my drink, I ordered a London Fog Tea Latte. I was hoping to have it served in an actual ceramic mug, but those are only offered to customers who order drip coffee. That said, they made a very good London Fog, with a little extra lavender and plenty of foam. For my taste, it could have been a bit hotter. Service: Everyone who helped us was kind and helpful and gave us plenty of time to choose the perfect pastries. When ordering the London Fog, they explained how they make theirs and how they would add the extra lavender, which I appreciated. As mentioned above, they do not provide mugs for specialty drinks, using mugs instead to keep track of customers who have paid for bottomless drip coffee. I could bring my own mug from home, but I am not a fan of carrying around coffee shop essentials. Atmosphere: The building is nicely designed on the outside and sits on a corner with plenty of large windows that bring in natural light. It faces north, so you avoid the glaring morning sun. Upon entering, there is a short walk to the counter, where you can view all of the bakery and pastry items. A menu board above clearly displays the breakfast and lunch offerings, making it easy for first time visitors. There are numerous tables that accommodate small groups, and a fireplace with a couple of upholstered chairs offers a cozy seating option. Even after filling up with customers, the noise level was very good, and easy to have casual conversations. A nice visit and a place I would enjoy coming back to.
