I've been longing to come to Highlands Tap Room Grill for quite a while now! For being the last place we went to before quarantine, it was well worth it. This place seems to have two crowds: The daytime brunchers, and the social nightlife. We just came here during the day, and it made for a nice place to hang out and have some lunch. Their staff were great and were always around when we needed them. I recommend you try their Crabby Patty. How many places can you get a burger with crab meat?? It was pretty great too! I'd love to come back to their bar scene sometime. I can see why this place is so popular! read more

The Tap Room is a staple in the Highlands neighborhood and a favorite spot for a lot of locals. Everyone can find something they like here and it's good for a group because there's a lot of seating - inside and outside! The food is, in a word, delicious. I've never had a bad meal here. Around Valentine's Day, Ian and I *attempted* to go to another spot for brunch and it was such a long wait. We decided to go to the Tap Room instead and I' so glad we did! Ian ordered pancakes and they came heart-shaped. How cute is that? They also have one of my favorite burgers in town, so uh, yeah, I got one for sure. If you're on the fence, come on down. They are not just kind and friendly but they are also very vigilant and always ensure that we feel safe. There have been a series of unfortunate events in that area and Jaylen always ensures the safety of the clientele at the Bar. OG Tap Room may have closed years ago....but Highlands Tap Room Grill (and the sister bar next door that shares the patio) is still the tops for me. No matter the time of day or night, what I am in the mood for, Tap Room always does it for me. I still consider it my "Cheers" place, where everybody knows my name. Which is only a little hyperbolic...but if an familiar employee isn't working, I am also sure to know several customers. It isn't fancy. But they have table service until about 9/9:30pm each night. The food is interesting and delicious. Solidly good every time. The specials are usually great too. The pulled pork nachos are huge and tasty, the crabby patty sandwich is delightful, the onion rings and the sauce with them are my favorite, the spinach salad is a great choice when you want something less carb-y and fried. And not only that...they have BRUNCH too! Saturdays offer a small, but familial breakfast menu. Sundays are the real deal with a small buffet and pancakes made to order. Mimosas and Bloody Marys...they have you covered. And all of this doesn't even begin to cover the trivia nights, art pop up shows, concerts and karaoke. The staff are wonderful. Sometimes when it gets busy they get a little backed up, but they have their eyes open in case you have to get their attention. I have never had a bad time at Tap Room and I return here regularly. As a self-professed trivia junkie, I have to confess that my experiences at Highlands Tap Room are limited mostly to Thursday night trivia. Arrive early, stake out your table, and defend your title. At least that's what we do, and usually we succeed at the latter if not the two former. In any case, trivia here is a great way to spend a Thursday night. The moderator goes quickly, we always have awesome service from Bonnie, and the pulled pork nachos cannot be beat. We've tried the pulled pork spring rolls, the chili nachos and the fried mac and cheese, but we keep going back to the pulled pork nachos. The mix of flavors hits the spot, and an order of nachos is enough to keep most of the table happy; sometimes it's so good that we'll order a second, and it's always out of the kitchen quickly. My go-to drink lately has been a virgin Margarita (I'm a lightweight in my old age), which they are happy to mix up despite it not being on the menu. They even keep it festive, putting it in a small tumbler on the rocks with salt around the rim for me. I can't guarantee you'll win at trivia (and some nights I can't guarantee that we will, either!) but I can guarantee you a good time on a Thursday night at the Highlands Tap Room! read more

I'm picking up the experience you have here is based on timing. Yelpers I follow on a regular basis score this place high(er) and enjoy the food. Plus I understand the draw to patio seating when the weather is great, especially on a busy street in the Highlands. Saying that, I arrived at 2 am and can only appreciate it for being one of the bars open beyond 1 am. The crowd outside was massive and drew our attention. Karaoke was in full effect inside while we grabbed a beer. It took awhile to make it to the front of the line and have our order taken. Practice patience. The bar was quite steamy so we took our drinks to the patio and found a spot to stand near the entrance. Eventually the table next to us opened up and we got to sit, but overall you shouldn't expect to get a seat here. I was impressed that despite being so close to the building that we couldn't hear the karaoke singers. This was a good spot to pop in for a drink and conversation. The crowd was a diverse, younger group and the range of outfits was amazing to take in. No cover but you must show your ID regardless of age. read more

Depending on the day and time, this Tap Room highland is a nice spot to drink, eat and social. It can get overly crowded on weekend but the staff there are well aware and will quickly take care of you. The staff are really friendly. The food itself is really good. I haven't had bad food there. Their chicken quesadilla, chicken and waffle, and burger is a hit. They do karaoke and trivia on some night, which is always fun. Beer mecca! My husband and I visited with some friends for their The Office trivia night. It got pretty busy but our server was as attentive as he could possibly be with all of the tables that he had. The beet selection here is crazy. They have a ton of local and domestics both on tap and in bottles so it's a great place to try something new. Their food was pretty good as well. It's next to impossible to review the taproom without referring to the Old Taproom a few times. The Old Taproom was one of my first favorite places in Louisville. I had a steady group of friends that I was always there with. I loved sitting in the back with a small group and watching TV, sports, or whatever. I also was in the beer club there. Having my name on a mug on the wall definitely made me loyal to the Old Taproom. When it moved, I was disappointed. For the longest time I wouldn't go there. It was normally because that part of the Highlands always took me to Holy Grale, Taco Bell, or the short lived KFC11. I've been to this new location a fair amount of times and my experiences have been mixed. To start... two buildings instead of one. The Old Taproom was more neighborhood. While this one still has some charm, I think some of the crowd that used to hang out at Phoenix Hill and Cahoot's hang out here now. On the weekends, it's usually packed. Brunch -- Buffet is good. Don't worry with the pancakes. If you do decide to get a pancake, opt for chocolate chip. I went with a strawberry pancake thinking I would get strawberries... it was strawberry jam. Major disappointment. Dinner -- I've only tried the pork nachos and the spring rolls. Spring rolls were good, but those pork nachos are something special. Large portion. The tastiest! The pork nachos are a must order! MUST! Drinks -- Fairly priced. Karaoke -- As one Yelper said(Matt R), this would be an easy place to test your karaoke skills. It's a loud room so even if you stink, no one can tell. I wish the outside patio was more organized. Seating is available but there's also plenty of standing room. In my opinion, I wish they'd split up the patio with tables and with standing room. That patio would be nice to hang out on and people watch(Like the Old Taproom). Unfortunately, that's next to impossible because there's a sea of people always standing out front. I haven't been back since Hopcat opened. I'm interested to see how the atmosphere changes at all the businesses around the Grinstead/Bardstown intersection. read more

This is by far my favorite brunch spot when I go with friends. They provide an excellent variety of family brunch staples in a casual (and kid free!) environment. The Highlands Tap Room also has great indoor and outdoor seating, so weather permitting you can enjoy the sights and sounds of Bardstown Road in the morning along with your meal. The food here is excellent, it is exactly what I want in the morning and for breakfast. Sure, sometimes it is fun (even preferable) to eat a more gourmet or exotic meal but there are Sundays (let's keep it real: Saturday nights) that warrant comfort food and staples. My coworker, Felicia, makes better biscuits and gravy but good luck getting that out of her: go to the Highlands Tap Room. The rest of the buffet is excellent as well and new food is constantly being brought out so you don't have the danger of food that has been out and festering. They also make you pancakes to order, including blueberry and chocolate chip (I am going to have to look into getting a blue berry chocolate chip pancake). I've also espied fresh chocolate chip cookies. If you aren't done making bad choices, there are $2 mimosas and bloody Mary's. The service is also top notch, I've always been really happy with the service. I am not just saying this because the server we normally get is also a Gryffindor alum, but because she and her coworkers are excellent at what they do. I like my cup to remain full and my pancakes to be prompt. If one is lucky they're also there when Marty Rosen's band, "Hound of Buskervilles," performs. I always enjoy that: good music and less pressure to maintain an interesting conversation. I see many people checking in here so when the opportunity came to visit Highland Tap Room, I was taking it. The selection of drinks is huge to the point where it can be overwhelming. The server was nice enough to let me try a few samples. I ended up going with this one that was fruity but I don't remember the name to it. 3.5 Ooh, Lord! Chile'. Let me tell you: I was not prepared for any of this. A.ny.of.this. I was back in my home town in late spring and I wanted to hang out with some friends. After eating at a Bardstown Road establishment, we headed over to the Tap Room Grill (which, I keep saying/hearing in the same cadence as 'Old Town Road'; that's apropos of nothing). I was unsure but I was told that I needed karaoke in my life and the drinks were cheap and strong. I should have listened to what my friends told me. If this were a movie or After School special, the tape would stop and the voice over would say, 'It was at that moment, he knew he made a mistake.' Utter chaos. But before I get to the environment, can we talk about the smell? We have to talk about the smell. Okay. I walked in to the joint with some skepticism. It was packed a to e with a lot (LOT!) of young men. This is, usually, never a good sign. I brushed past the first pack and was smacked in the face with a mushroom cloud of weed. Live and let live and all that but... wow. It almost knocked me down. We made our way to a table by the wall when my friend went for drinks. And that's when the second wave of smell hit me and I longed for the herbal. The funk of forty thousand years settled down around me and would not let go. I don't remember the last time I smelled B.O. like that. It was in my nose, my mouth, my throat... My friend returned to the table to find me with my head on my arms. She laughed and gave me my drink. I drank it and coughed. She was NOT kidding about these drinks being strong. That's when I realized: I was at a frat party. Good Lord. From there, the 'entertainment' started. From inappropriate lyrics to misogynist acting out to barely repressed 'curiosity,' these fellows shouted, jumped, humped, cussed, high-fived, hooped, hollered, and engaged in all sorts of behavior my inner/outer schoolmarm was not having. I fully recognize that had this place been packed with my friends and those like us, the stick would not have been so firmly lodged. It's true. As it was, I spent the evening getting 'lifted' by various sources and coming up with semi-tragic back stories for anyone who dared get on the mic. I suppose that's worth rounding up. read more

Spirit-forward drinks. Great bourbon selection. If you can stand the extremely interesting clientele, you'll be able to enjoy some of the best bar food in town. The chicken quesadilla is the best I've had in Louisville. There is nightly karaoke, which may or may not interest you. There is also one pool table, and several TVs to keep yourself occupied. If you're in the Highlands you've got to make a pit stop to Tap Room and Grill. It's a great spot for inexpensive food and drinks, so if you're on a budget, get yourself over here. Our first visit to Highland. Nice craft beer selection and friendly employees. Laid back atmosphere. Fairly typical pub menu but I would say a step above many pub grub menus. Enjoyed the Devil Egg appetizer as well as the Chipotle Wings. I would have liked a tad more heat on the wings but overall enjoyed them. We split the Chorizo Meatloaf. Both my wife and I liked the meatloaf. Tasty meatloaf and the sides seemed to be a better quality than you usually find in pub/bar settings. This is my second time here. Great place for casual, kick back drinking with some fine craft beers on draft. They also serve food.. not all of it is typical pub fair. Try the chorizo meatloaf... mmmm. It comes with garlic mashed potatoes and fresh veggie of the day. Staff is friendly, however a little short staffed at times, but not to the point that I was aggravated. It has more of a neighborhood feel, rather than a large restaurant or chain feel. My favorite dishes at here are the Pulled Pork Spring Rolls, quesadillas, and Nachos. It's a great karaoke bar where there isn't a crazy long line to sing. The bartenders and servers are as friendly as can be, especially considering how busy this bar is at certain times. If you're not into karaoke then I'd recommend getting out of the bar before midnight. It's essentially the bar version of the movie Gremlins: Staying here after midnight is like feeding a Gremlin after midnight- it can be chaos. Sometimes it's interesting but a lot of times, it can make you feel like leaving. In sum, I recommend this bar for food and drinks but I'd keep my visiting hours from 7:30-midnight unless you're looking for a big adventure. read more

Highlands Tap Room Grill is a no-judgement kind of bar. And this extends to many parts of the establishment. It makes no judgement on beer tastes and carries both Bud and craft beers. It welcomes folks of all singing abilities to grab the mic for karaoke, and the crowd cheers alongside virtuosos and so-sos alike. And last year, following the Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage, it hosted a mass wedding celebration for gay and straight couples alike. All are welcome at the Tap Room -- including my group of friends, who were all dressed in pajamas, from a previous party in the evening, last week -- and that's why I and so many others are fans. Plus it doesn't hurt that the food is really, really good. On my most recent visit, I got to enjoy Captain Carl's Balls. Snicker all you want, but these fried mac and cheese balls are a mouthful of cheesy goodness. *snicker, snicker* And the pulled pork nachos are definitely a favorite. Thanks to Tap Room regular and Yelp Elite Kathy V for recommending these. The pulled pork was full of flavor, and the nachos kept their crunch longer than I thought they would. The Tap Room has a great patio along Bardstown Road, if people watching is your thing. If you go late, be aware of the fact that you have to order food and drinks at the bar after 10 p.m. There is no table service that late. But it is great that the Tap Room serves food late, regardless. And when you have everyone going up to the bar, the crowd around the bar can definitely become thick and hard to maneuver through. But all of those people signal something -- that this is a laid-back, all-are-welcome bar that everyone should give a shot. read more
