We returned for a second visit because of our great experience two nights ago. We discovered that there are 2 "Pauls" this visit - one is the owner and the other is a server. Our first visit we had the owner as our server and tonight we had the other Paul. Both were excellent!! Now to the food we were very impressed the first time and this time did not disappoint. Everything was prepared as requested - I enjoyed the Rodeo Burger which I saw another patron order last time. One in our party decided on the salad bar with grill chicken and it was delicious and the chicken was not overcooked. The desserts were excellent again (lemon berry cake, ice cream scopes, and vanilla ice cream sundae). We are sorry that we can't go again because we are leaving the area but would suggest if you are near you want to take the time to visit. read more

First, I'm happy to report that my experience aligned with my friend's raving of High's Restaurant. After a few disappointments, food wise (while in this area), I finally had the pleasure to be truly satisfied with my experience of High's Restaurant. Let's start with the customer service here. At minimum, the rating for the service here is SUPERB. Our waitress was super kind, engaging, prompt, and warm. The food. The portions here are massive with great price points. I started with a cup of the Kickin' Crab Soup, which was flavored fairly well. However, there wasn't any crab chunks in the soup, which was a tad disappointing. I then had the Rodeo Burger, which was just what I needed! The pairing of the bbq sauce was such a great decision. Even though this burger was good, what would have made it excellent (to me) was a little bit more seasoning on the beef patty. The fries!... Were simply made to perfection. Even after microwaving (which took away the crisp), I still thoroughly enjoyed the fries. We then left lol and came back for a milkshake which was excellent! I had a half Oreo and half Butterfingers milkshake , which was everything my tastebuds desired. Whenever back in the area, it will definitely be my vote to revisit High's Restaurant. read more

We don't write a lot of reviews, but after having a family dinner at High's, our children not only insisted that we ring the bell on the way out - which a sign in the restaurant instructs us we should do if we enjoyed our meal -- but also insisted that we write a glowing review. We had been driving for a few hours, having started in Clarksburg, WV, over the curvy, mountainous Rte 250, and into Monterey, VA. It was a lazy Sunday afternoon in early March, 2024, and few establishments were open in Monterey. We spotted High's, and decided that it would be a good rest stop for desserts and hot beverages. Food. (Rating: 3/5). My husband ordered coffee and their Maple Berry Perfection Cake, while I got a hot tea and Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie. Of course, we split our desserts. All of our choices were okay, and "hit the spot" but we probably wouldn't order them again. The filling in my pie was tasty, but the crust was pale-colored and soft and gooey after having been warmed in the microwave. The Maple Berry cake was light on the berries. Both slices were of average size. The coffee was okay, but he prefers a stronger brew. My hot tea was Lipton, which is never sufficiently strong for me either. Value. (Rating: 1/5). We should've been more cautious in ordering when noticing that prices were not listed on the menu nor on the signage for desserts and drinks. We were quite surprised when the waitress gave us the bill for $22.11, before tip. Ambiance. (4/5). The decor is cute, and is described by the establishment as being reminiscent of a 1950s old-fashioned soda shop. There are photos of Hollywood actors, wooden booths on which graffiti is encouraged, and various items for sale (from baseball caps to maple syrup). The eating areas and bathrooms were clean. Service (3/5). We seated ourselves, and the waitress brought our menus relatively soon. Our desserts and hot drinks were somewhat slow to come out although the restaurant wasn't too busy. My husband also had to flag her down to get a refill on his coffee. There was also a bit of attempted upselling. Do you want ice cream on your pie? Cute, cute, cute..... While riding around the Allegheny Highlands, we happened upon this little town. This small restaurant was located across the street from the beautiful old Inn. Upon entering High's, we were promptly received and seated at the last remaining table. Our Tomato Basil and Chicken Pot Pie Soups were very good. I cannot say enough great things about High's. Their food was so good, great portion size, and priced well. Additionally, the wait staff is so helpful, and patient! My nephew was being very particular with his dessert order and our waitress didn't blink an eye, only tried to work with him. She also was helpful and knowledgeable about whether items had gluten in them as I have celiacs. I ordered the smothered chicken (peppers, onions, mushrooms, cheese, bacon and BBQ sauce) with coleslaw and a baked potato for my sides. 4 stars for what it is, a mountain town diner. Everyone was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant decor is kitschy with Hollywood photos and people leaving notes, pics, autographs on the wooden booths. Seemed clean. Menu covers a lot of ground with dinner entrees, burgers, sandwiches, appetizers and dessert. They have a cookie skillet on the many that they ask you to order when you order dinner. I almost tried it, but it's 4 cookies and 4 scoops of ice cream!! Food was pretty good. I got the chicken tenders with a salad and fries. The servings were large. Tenders were cooked well and the fries were really good. It was pretty pricey with three of us costing $85. Definitely pricing based on limited options in the area! We got cake to go. I ate that chocolate cake a few hours later and it was really good. I forgot pics, but thought I'd share. The only redeeming factor of the visit was our server Paul. He greeted us with a big smile and warm hello from the moment we stepped in the door. And went the extra mile to try and make our experience a good one. The dining room itself is decorated with Hollywood actor photos and autographs. Otherwise, the food quality does not equate to the price. It's important to forewarn that the menu states "homemade" and tastes very different to what my grandma would consider "homemade". We went on Sunday evening after the Maple festival. An incentive was free pancakes with our $23.75 meal. We asked what farm provided the syrup. The staff replied, "it's not maple syrup, it's just regular pancake syrup" All while they were selling bottles of organic maple syrup in the dining room. Driving west from the Shenandoah Valley along US 250 feels like a trip back across the centuries. Highland County is a rare "Frontier" County in the Eastern US, a beautiful wild spot. Then you get to Monterey, VA - a county seat of about 150 people - and you find High's. They serve a magnificent fried trout sandwich and we also had pork tenderloin with a Blackberry compote that was fabulous. Great collard greens and sweet potato mash. Desserts are homemade. Wonderful service, its inexpensive, and the other customers, locals all, were just lovely to get to know. read more

My family and I were so disappointed with High's restaurant this past visit. We have probably ate at this restaurant 20 times or more when we come to the area. We live 100 plus miles away and always look forward to stopping at High's. However, the whole atmosphere has changed,the food was inedible and the price was exorbitant. I would suggest asking the price before eating. Two of us had pancakes and sausage. One had a biscuit with sausage gravy and homefries. I had a biscuit and gravy( the gravy was really salty) and scrambled eggs, which I could not eat. The eggs were watery and COLD.With drinks the cost was $54.00.(Plus tip) When we asked about the preparation of the food and or the price, all that we were told is they have to cover the price of the maple syrup. Stumbled into Highs after a recommendation we received on a hike. We saved it for our last night in Monterey. It did not disappoint. We love coming to High's when we're visiting family in Monterey. HANDS DOWN, best cheeseburger I've ever had. The fries were super crispy, perfectly seasoned. Like everyone else, they are trying to stay open. First the pandemic, and now the Biden economy! $4- $5 gas and no one is traveling. Can't get anyone to work. For Maple Festival, I would recommend going to one of the Ruritan breakfast locations instead. Overpriced and Underdelivered. Review is ONLY of Maple Festival weekend experience as I think it may not reflect High's Restaurant's usual. Based on a great experience at High's for the 2018 Maple Festival, I insisted that our group rise early and get to town in time to eat at High's. One small red flag was the man on the street who told my husband that the place had the best breakfast in town as if he were not connected with it but then turned out to be the person who unlocked the door and seemed to be running the place. He was super friendly and was kind enough to let us in early to avoid a freezing cold wait. Once we were seated and the restaurant opened up, we were handed a single menu for ONE choice of a breakfast that cost $18!!! (You can go to the Ruritan breakfast for $12.) I have no problem with the management attempting to streamline their breakfast service, but the price should have been more like $8 for what they served. We all received a very small portion of eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, Wonderbread and 2 small pancakes. And honestly, all but the box mix pancakes probably came straight from the freezer. I can't verify, but we all suspected the eggs were reconstituted, and the maple syrup was not real maple syrup...at the maple festival....for an $18 breakfast!!! Again, had the price been much cheaper, we would have just been a little disappointed, but for this price, we should have had a very different experience. The waitresses were very friendly, and the place was very cozy, but it should be skipped for the festival weekend. Maybe try it another time. read more

I know the pandemic has taken a toll on small business, especially food vendors. So I was willing to cut people slack once things began opening up After not happening for 2 consecutive years, I was excited to drive 1-1/2 hours to the Highland County Maple Festival. In years past, the streets were lined with food trucks and the restaurants so busy we couldn't get in. So we were excited to leave early this year to get in before the crowds, expecting the buffet and all you can eat pancakes (topped with maple syrup, of course!) advertised in the festival brochures. We were pleased when we easily found a booth. However, what followed was the most disappointing breakfast I have ever been served, made worse by the ridiculous price tag. No, there was no buffet, or all you can eat pancakes. Nor was there even a menu to order from. Instead, we were offered a single option--scrambled eggs, 2 sausage links, a hash brown patty, 1 slice of bread, and the choice of either 2 buttermilk pancakes or 2 buckwheat pancakes, and a choice of beverage. Well, ok. A hearty breakfast when it was so misty and cold outside would have been ok. But what we received was just disappointing. What appeared to be less than a full egg, dried out from sitting in a pan, two very cold sausages, a greasy hash brown cake (like the frozen ones purchased from food lion) and the thinnest pancakes I have ever seen. The bread was the best part! All served on paper plates, to finish off the experience. And the maple syrup? Well, who knows what kind it was--served in a bottle with a handwritten PS (pancake Syrup?) that wouldn't allow it to pour unless you took the lid off. Ok, well...let's eat and get to the festival. But wait--how much was this feast? $15.99 per person. Now, like I said, I am ok paying a bit more to help a small town joint get back on its feet after the pandemic. But this is ridiculous. It's price gouging tourists who come to their town for a festival, serving them sub par food in meager quantities. And then they expect a tip (I left 15% at this point) and tell us to "come back when it's not the maple festival". Why? Is the food any better then? I doubt it, and I won't be back. It was a lousy start to my day, and literally left a bad taste in my mouth. read more
