Just delightful. This place meets my double-rule of "no chains" and "no interstates". Parking was tight, and tables were full, as it was time for the Sunday lunch rush. I got biscuits and gravy to go (side of potatoes), and enjoyed them on one of the several picnic tables outside. Very helpful and friendly staff, lovely building, great food. My father brought my sister and I to White's Wayside because he told us that it has the best bread that you can get. He wasn't wrong! We walked in, and it had that rustic, comforting vibe. I sat down and ordered iced tea, served in a mason jar. Another feeling of comfort, as my grandmother always serves drinks in jars. I looked at the menu. My father recommended I split an omelet with my sister. So that's what I did. Absolutely loved it. Most omelets put everything towards the center of the egg, but White's Wayside distributed everything equally. We also ordered a cinnamon roll. Gone in an estimated 5 minutes. My little sister said I should include this; after we payed the check, we were about to walk out, and a man taught us all about the beehive that they have mounted on the wall. We are passing through on a motorcycle adventure and needed a place for breakfast before getting on the road. Based on the five stars we stopped in and were NOT disappointed. The potato was spicy (which is a great thing), and the jam is fresh and yummy. Wait staff is super friendly, and they have fresh fruit! We started with the Pimento cheese on homemade crackers. I had the cheese burger and my wife had the chicken salad sandwich. Both were served with hand cut fries. Everything was done perfectly. This place just opened last week and is fantastic. They make their own special bread and everything is homemade. We went for lunch (currently open for breakfast and lunch on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday but will eventually be open for dinner). The catfish was some of the best I've ever had. The salad (with homemade bread croutons) was also really good. The best thing might have been the pimento cheese with crackers made from the bread. The pie (pecan and peanut butter) were already great. Prices are very reasonable and great service! You can buy a loaf of bread to take home. Highly recommend. read more

We had lunch at White's Wayside today and it was wonderful. A delightful stop. The food was delicious and the young man waiting tables was so nice. We are on the older side of life so asked to split the French Dip and they were very accommodating. The Dip was so tender and flavorful. The bread is excellent. The french fries appear to be hand cut. We top everything off by sharing an excellent cheesecake with strawberry drizzle. Well worth taking a drive through the country. read more

Do be prepared for a wait because they only have about 8-10 tables, but they have porch swings and a checkers table to keep you occupied while you wait. :) Everything is made in house with local fare (and solar energy!), and my goodness was it absolutely delicious. They started out almost 2 years ago full steam, but have gone down hill since hiring young inexperienced people to work. The waitresses are argumentative if you question anything, and they have tried to charge me for items not ordered. Their "famous bread" is no better than what you can get at other local places for less $, and their pies are terrible. The sandwiches are okay, but their fries are seasoned with more than "just salt and pepper" that the waitresses insist on. I would NOT go there if you have ANY food allergies, because they don't seem to care if they cross-contaminate. read more

AN OASIS IN THE WILDERNESS! Foodies, Hikers, Locals, Tourists, Anglers, and anyone that enjoys a great meal, at a reasonable price, in an unexpected local landmark should add White's Wayside to their list....seriously. The restaurant is clean and welcoming. It is true, authentic country charm. The menu explains that the ingredients are locally sourced. The salad greens are grown just up the road in a local farmer's greenhouse. The trout, catfish, and ground beef come from a little west in Highland County, and other ingredients are sourced from small businesses just east of Churchville in Staunton. They offer locally brewed beer, and the wine is from a nearby vineyard. Restaurants like this, that tout locally sourced ingredients, in a city would charge at least twice the price. The prices are comparable to a normal family restaurant, but the quality is superior by far. White's Wayside is tucked into the George Washington National Forest near Braley Pond, Elkhorn Lake, Highland County (the little Switzerland of Virginia), Ramsey's Draft Wilderness area, Shenandoah Mountain, and tons of hiking/backpacking trails including The Great Eastern Trail. Just a couple miles west of the wayside is the trailhead of the Chimney Hollow Trail that offers options of hiking 10-15 miles over Crawford Mountain and Elliot Knob. Shenandoah Mountain offers loads of hiking options too. This will be a perfect place to celebrate the beginning or end of some time in nature. We found out that Jack and Mary, the owners, also operate the large house next door (They call it the Millstone) as a B&B or meeting place for groups.This could be a perfect place to set up as home base for outdoor enthusiasts, retreats, business trips, or anyone looking to get out of the city for a while. Mary can tell all kinds of interesting stories and show you old pictures of the restaurant and the original family that founded the restuarant in 1929. She and Jack truly resurrected and upgraded the restaurant since we had been there many years ago. The restaurant had been out of business and vacant for quite a while; and was in need of renovation. They just recently installed a solar panel array that can provide more than enough electricity to support the business. Locally-grown ingredients, renewable energy, amazing scenery, outdoor recreational opportunity, excellent people, a place to stay right next door, or camp just up the road...what more? The wayside was/is famous for its bread, and you will find out why with your first taste of the dinner roll. They offer bread, meals, locally produced products, lunches and pies to go if you're on the run. Thankfully, one of the original family members taught the new owners how to make the bread from the original White family recipe and it is DEEEEELICIOUS! Yes, this review is a little long, but we hope that this restaurant, this business model, and these people truly succeed. This place is worth going out of your way. The area has a lot to offer. We stumbled upon Whites Wayside on our way to the Natural Chimneys. What a GEM!!! A tiny little "cabin" in George Washington National Forest. We walked in and were greeted by the sweetest "pick anywhere you'd like to sit". We ordered their fried oysters special for an appetizer and I got a cup of chicken noodle soup. The oysters tasted super fresh and the coating was perfectly seasoned and nice and crunchy. My chicken noodle soup was the best I've ever had! It could cure a cold with one cup...I'm convinced. My husband ordered the roast beef sandwich and I ordered the Ny Rueben...being from NY, I had to try it out. They bake the bread fresh there, so immediately you know this is gonna be a GOOD sandwich. Our meals came and the portion was incredible! We both got fries as our side and were pleasantly surprised to taste a hint of truffle. I'm serious folks...perfectly seasoned truffle fries in the middle of Virginia! My Rueben was absolutely out of control delicious. Thin sliced, grilled meat, mustard and coleslaw. I know it doesn't sound like your typical Rueben...but TRUST ME...order it. You can thank me later. Hubby's roast beef dip sandwich was piled high with the most tender, perfectly seasoned, perfectly thin sliced roast beef. I can't remember our very sweet waitresses name, but do remember she was a teacher. If you ever read this, the New Yorkers hope your dad is healing well from his hip injury! I went here with a group for lunch on Saturday and had to come back for breakfast on Sunday. Everyone got something delicious. It seemed like the catfish, Reuben, and French toast were the big winners, but you really can't go wrong. For the vegetarians, pay attention to the bread. It's delicious but made with lard. Honestly, as a vegetarian, I ate it anyway. All the prices are reasonable and make it easy to keep coming back. Beer and wine are available, even though they're not on the menu yet. I read about this sweet spot while researching the Maple Festival in Highland County. It was really crowded because of the crowds from the Maple Festival and they had just been featured on local TV. I had homemade bean soup and pimento cheese. Wow! It was all fresh and great. My husband had the Reuben and it was fresh and tasty, too. The owners were friendly and eager to please. They make a great effort to use local products and hire local people, contributing to the local economy. All around great place to stop! They sell baked goods and I bought a loaf of their delicious bread to take home. read more

Have eaten here several times, today 9/2/2018 was a total disaster. My wife and I ordered "The amazing WW grilled cheese" the cheese appeared to be painted on with a brush, the bacon and tomatoe were let off. We brought this to the attention of our server, and she returned to kitchen and brought us 2 slices of thin bacon and 1slice of thin tomatoe.We ended up with 2 thick slices of bread with barest of ingredients for a sandwich. They need to rename to "The amazing WW grilled bread sandwich. I would have complained, but the piano music was so loud you couldn't converse. I wanted to like the place a lot. I came to see my friends perform music. Though my waitress was nice and polite and I was allowed to order an off-menu mixed vegetable dish which was very good, two of the staff were rude in three different ways. I came in and sat in the only available seating at a large long table occupied by a single couple who were fine with that. This is a small place. There is no bar to sit at. That table or standing were the only options. The first rude one made me feel bad for sitting down. Then later as I was waiting for my food, the owner comes to ask if I was going to dine. I told him as soon as it comes, yes. The implication was I was only welcome to see my friends perform if I ordered food. Good thing I did I guess! I was then asked by the first rude one to move to a small table far from my friends performing that opened up - in the absence of any larger party needing the space. Had trout- great taste. Knew to save room for dessert- coconut cream pie was yummy and enough for the two of us. Hubby got catfish and it too was great. Had to get pimento cheese and bread to take home from their little store. I went out of my way to go to this diner because I had heard it was so good. Well, the Reuben Sandwich was good but not really hot. The fries, although hand-cut, tasted like they were fried in oil with seafood or some weird kind of seasoning. I truly believe that they do not do much to prevent cross-contamination. I was concerned about this, so I looked through the door to the kitchen and did not see ANYONE wearing sanitation gloves while prepping the food; and it looked like they were prepping hamburgers on the same table as they were cutting up the vegetables. The pie filling was just Okay, but the crust was very tough (I couldn't eat the crust). The waitresses were more interested in "gossip" than in taking orders, and once our food came, we never saw the waitress again, she just disappeared. The girl who took our money at the register was young and very rude. We had heard the bread was "famous white's way bread" and took a loaf home. We had it the very next day, and it tasted like the baker or whoever kneaded the dough, had worn some kind of perfume.
