Just south of Pescadero is @highway1brewing (Instagram has their live music schedule and pics of their sunsets) I had not been there since 2013 but but now having returned in autumn of 2025 i absolutely plan to go back. They have a relatively new beer garden, which is shown here in my photos and there's just so much to look at. They also have a #vegan burger from @beyondburgeroffical and the combination made for a wonderful lunch in the sun shielded from the wind. Service Alive and smiling fast in a busy Saturday too. this place has been wonderfully remodeled in the past couple years. The beer garden is chockablock with clever coastal Kitch. The fence is half reinforced with surfboards and snowboards. so much to look at. Parking has gotten a lot easier too. There's a enormous parking area right next to the gas station that you might not think is part of Highway one Café, but I confirmed that it is. Also, you can sit out front and there you'll find a view to the ocean. The beer garden is my favorite tho. Suggestion: why not carpool here and then go down and ride @cotonicoastdairiesnm which has more than 8 miles of trails and a gorgeous view of the sunset. starting in October each year sunset is visible from the west side of Santa Cruz and Davenport where cotoni is!! *This place is opened back up * Highway 1 Brewery is a really cool spot with a lot of potential. Some of the beers are actually pretty solid, and the food is okay -- nothing bad, just not especially memorable. One of the best parts is sitting at the bar and looking out toward Highway 1 and the ocean. The view alone makes it worth stopping in. Service is just okay. It usually seems like there's only one bartender working, which makes ordering difficult when it gets busy. Cleanliness is also a concern. The place doesn't feel especially well-kept, and we noticed what looked like something growing in the lemonade container, which definitely took away from the experience. read more

Sampled the Highway 1PA, the Gazos Sunset, the Sailor's Delight and the Paul's Cap, all good beers. In particular the Gazos Sunset and Paul's Cap were my favorites. I like that you can buy 5oz pours and pick any of their beers to sample, and I loved the driftwood sampler board. Did not try the food, but it was a nice little divey stop on our way up to Half Moon Bay. read more

My husband got a flight of 4 (2 hazies, a rye IPA and a blond ale). He said they were fine- had better, had worse. Now my husband has a high tolerance for disinterested service folks, but he said the bartender was almost completely disengaged in the act of bartending. He was ignored for a few minutes while the bartender did paperwork. After he finally got his flight poured, the bartender didn't tell him what beers were what- just slapped 'em down and walked off. He had to call him back to ask what was what. We got the cauliflower bites again. They were pretty small-portioned and left a gross taste in our mouths after. We sat outside and luckily the weather was nice because the inside smelled like old bait and sewage. There are great breweries in Santa Cruz- go before you leave or keep going until you get there, is my suggestion. read more

Stopped for lunch on our way back up the coast. Really good burgers, fries and beers. Not a very big menu but what they do, they do well. There was a live band playing on the patio, dog friendly, lots of fun. It's now on our list of must stop places along highway 1 when we drive from Pacifica to Santa Cruz. read more

This place has so much promise.. but there's limited beer and drink options. The food menu is fine (didn't actually eat) but given that they're on the side of a long highway, we assumed they would have some GOOD low ABV options, which they didn't. They also didn't have much variety or flavor of beers at all. No sours, light beers, ciders, etc. if you're pulling off from the highway, you may not want a 6-8% beer. First of all, all the three-star and less reviews on here are from 5-8 years ago. I'm glad I noticed that and decided to come. Under new ownership and management, this brewery is delightful in so many ways. They only had four beers on tap (between my partner and I, we tried them all). Each one was on point, especially the hazy and the red. We even took some to go-which Kieth pulled from the tap and canned right in front of us. There's a decent ocean view, and the atmosphere of friendly. We chatted it up with the regulars and the owner (who was tending bar) and the official canine mascot. He brought out some smoked brussel sprouts to get customers' opinions on whether they should go on the menu. Yes, we all agreed, they should! We did splitsies on the cheeseburger and fish and chips. Both were tasty and reasonably priced (for the location). Please ignore the negative reviews-they aren't current and don't reflect new ownership-and stop in next time you're traveling past on Highway 1. read more

Love, love, love this place! Tom's stout is good but not great. The reason to visit is the blue cheese burger and pulled pork sammich! They are both delish as most of the food is locally sourced. Michael, their host, has the best job. Chat with customers and drink beer . My friend and I talked with Michael over lunch about a month ago. Helluva nice guy with great information about the place, surroundings, and life in general. The only bummer about this place is their limited days and hours (glad they just started opening on Thursdays so it is now Thursday through Sunday). I know the reason; just wish I could eat and drink there more frequently. Highway 1 Brewing is another every time in Pescadero stop. Eat and drink in their backyard bier garten. Met up with a buddy yesterday and went for a motorcycle ride down the coast. We found ourselves at Hwy 1 Brewing Co. in need of food, beverages and gas so we stopped in. The coastal June gloom weather was starting to clear and the temperature was actually perfect. Not too many people there when we arrived, but the back beer garden filled up as we sat and enjoyed our food and beer. I had the fish tacos which are made with local, line caught cod that is grilled perfectly. 3 tacos per order with cabbage, salsa, lime and the sauce is tasty. Comes with a side of chips too. Really delicious. I washed it down with the Ocean Breeze Tropical IPA which was also delicious. Not sure why this place isn't rated higher? The layout is great with ample indoor and outdoor seating, bathrooms are clean, back beer garden is awesome, staff is very friendly and fast and the food and beer is really tasty. Prices are fair as well. If you're looking for a coastal destination to hang out with friends, enjoy some good food and house-brewed beers, set your GPS for this place and escape the urban jungle for a day. read more

This is a place where you pay and tip first, before you find out there's limited table service, the tables and chairs are sticky, the food is stale and portions are small. We ate because it was the only place along that section of coast, but that's the only thing going for it. Keep driving if you can. read more

We were looking for a spot for light snacks and refreshments on highway 1. Decided to stop here and it's a gem. They have indoor seating, a small area in the front, but the gem is the rustic chic back garden. As for food, we ordered the lightly salted fries and buffalo wings. We really liked the fries. They were thick cut, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The wings were on the smaller side, but tasty. As for brews, we ordered the tropical ipa and stout. The ipa was refreshing and fruity without a strong bit and the stout was cream and smooth. Decent selection for a small place, personal wish is a couple of more stouts and/or porter. read more

We were visiting during full lockdown so there was no outdoor seating. We had to order out front and then stand around waiting for our food and beer to be brought out to us. None of this was ideal for the business or for the customer. We had previewed the menu online and went in knowing what we were planning to order. That didn't work out because the menu had changed. We really wanted fish and chips. They were not serving fish and chips. This led to a last-minute scramble to find alternatives. We ended up getting beyond burgers for three of us and clam chowder for one person. We also had some confusion over the beer. We had been handed a menu while we waited in line. We thought we had our beer order ready. It all made for a frustrating experience. Once we got our food, it was fine. The beyond burger was about what I normally expect. The fries were good. My son enjoyed the clam chowder. Overall, it wasn't a great experience but nothing was normal during that visit. We will be in the area again and I'll give them another try during non-COVID lockdown times. read more

Stormy Sunday afternoon when we found Hwy 1 Brewing for a late lunch while we explored the coast. We sat in the bar- attentive and friendly bartenders took our orders and our food was delivered promptly. Beer was good- the dude enjoyed a couple of pints. I ordered the pomegranate cider- tart and delicious. Lunch for me was a brisket slider with a side of cheesy, delicious, uber-comfort mac n cheese- all quite delicious. What a cool little place on Highway 1! We stopped for lunch on our way down the coast and grabbed a few beers and some food. The beers were actually quite good! The back patio is so pretty and you wouldn't expect it from the front (glad the person taking our order clued us in). My husband is picky about his beer and he was so in love he night a four pack and it didn't even make it back to our Air Bnb. Well, here's what happened to us, the hippie bartender was completely rude to us. He barely made eye contact with us and when we asked for a menu, he just threw it on the counter and walked away. When we asked for some samples of beer, he scoffed. We ordered some special chicken dish that he recommended that was horrible, literally just slapped into a bowl and it was all over the sides and the burger didn't even fit the bun. It was overcooked, although he said he was going to have a cooked medium rare. When we asked to split the check, the bartender was so disgusted and barely was helpful. The charge was $37 for a burger and a beer which I think was not right. Overall this could have been a great experience because it's right on the coast and it's such a great spot. But.....The service was so bad we will never return. Hopefully they can get it together in the future. What a disappointment! read more

We stumbled across this place on our way to Santa Cruz and were pleasantly surprised! During Covid, they have social distancing, sanitizing and outdoor dining in effect. The beer selection was comprised of 8 brews on draft - a little IPA forward but we enjoyed the Blonde and Red Ale. Truly top notch. As we waited for our lunch in their biergarten, they came around with complimentary chips- a really nice touch. We ordered fish and chips and clam chowder. The fish was excellent! The clam chowder doesn't have bacon, always a plus. The chowder is very good with lots of pepper. The fries could use a little more crispiness, but overall are okay. Overall, we enjoyed our visit! I typically love breweries with food, heck I typically love breweries period. I was let down on both aspects here, though. Hopefully it will be better in a future visit. First let down: the menu. The menu on their website did not match what was available when we arrived. This was more than a clerical error. The menu was just plain flat-out different; both for food and beer. Had I known the menu and "conditions" prior to arriving, I would have skipped my visit altogether. I had my heart set on fish and chips. I try to eat vegetarian but I will make exceptions for fish and chips. So I was very disappointed already once we got in line to order and saw the actual menu. But, I thought, no biggy; I will get a great variety of beer so all will not be lost! Until I to the ordering station... To the minute that I write this review, I still don't understand the conditions of ordering beer there nor the additional conditions for the supposed sampler pack that one can order. I really wanted the sour sampler but I was told something about how I couldn't order that because the beers weren't from their brewery. OK, fine; but don't offer it on the menu then. The order-taker offered to have a manager come out and speak with me about it but there was no purpose in that. It wasn't going to improve the situation. In the end, I ordered two cans of beer and stopped trying to understand. So in the end, for what was ~$80 with tip I recall, I got 3 Beyond Burgers (which I had in the freezer in the camper anyway) with fries, a bowl of clam chowder, and two 16oz cans of beer. All of which I had to take away since, despite a nice patio being present, no one could sit at it. read more

Great experience, great food, and great ambiance! We ordered our food & drinks in the front and then went around back to grab a table. What a pleasant surprise- the back beer garden was amazing! Tons of seating, awesome vibe, and absolutely amazing service. We were a party of 5 kids & 6 adults. The adults all had a different beverage, and all 11 of us ordered different food off the menu. We were not disappointed! The brews & food were delicious. The kids even said how tasty their food was. We were even able to order cans to go of the beers we liked best. I read some of the other reviews after our visit, and my friend ordered the fish & chips and loved it. We didn't view a menu prior to going, so didn't decide on what we wanted until we got there. We asked to taste a beer and he took a long pause, sighed, and said he's too busy (literally 5 people and the bar and all you're doing is pouring BEER) hate to be that person but I worked in a busy restaurant for awhile and no matter how swamped I am I took care of my customers. We rented the outside for a few families with children. When they gave us Mac & Cheese it tasted like beer. When we got the bread and meat it tasted like beer. Everything tasted the same like BEEER. I am always excited to see a nice little brewery at a great location. We had travelled for a good hour and half to catch the sunset at Pigeon point Lighthouse. This place is literally 2 minutes from the location by car. Also, you get stunning views of the sunset from the brewery itself. We got a set of 4 samplers, all home brewed craft beers. They had some greats ciders too! My favorites were the Oceanview, the Spicy Saison( with hints of Jalapeño) and the Pomegranate cider. We just got a couple sides of fries since we weren't too hungry, but they have a good menu as well. The owner of the place was very warm, explained how they brew all the beers and helped us decide our orders. Loved the place! read more
