John runs one of the best shops in the country. He rebuilt my 65 GMC 305V6 and it was dome perfectly. Given the obstacles of the old engine he was able to figure it all out. This shop sits in a business/industrial area just east of Interstate Route 10 and south of Ruthroff Avenue. It's a tough looking neighborhood and I would never have taken my car here without the personal recommendation of someone I knew. My neighbor, a retired heavy equipment repair shop manager, once worked with the father of the Highway Drive Repair Service (HDRS) owners. Based on my neighbor's credentials (He ran shops all over the world) and his high praise for these people, I took my 2002 Nissan to the HDRS. I was not disappointed the first time, or any other time I had repairs done at this shop.They are great people with a friendly, accommodating and most importantly a competent approach to you and your car's problems. I would trust them with my Maserati, if I had one. I recently had an engine light turn on and stopped by to make an appointment. They immediately stuck a diagnostic scanner on the car and told me the results (no charge). I was out of there in five minutes. The problem was not critical so I put off the repair until I had the time to have it worked on. I don't know their hourly rate but based on comparative estimates, I do know it is far less than dealership repair shops. There was never any sandbagging on the diagnoses or the bill. I called this location after knowing what my fault code was. I knew it was just a sensor , but needed to be raised up on a life to replace it. It is literally a 20 minute job to get done. After I explained that the lady on the phone told me it would be 2 weeks to get in. I was curious and had my friend call about a serious transmission issue that would take almost a full day, And surprise surprise they got him in on Thursday (it was Tuesday when I called). I brought my 2001 jetta here after some over heating problems. To fully understand how good this place was you would have to understand how I came to this place. Like many car owners i pretend to know more about cars then I really do and try to fix mine before shelling out large sums of cash. When My car suddenly overheated I went through the standard searching through google and trying to diagnose symptoms. After replacing the thermostat, coolant,about every sensor and flushing my radiator......i was at a loss. I brought my car to a supposed Jetta expert in town and was told that I had a blown head gasket. I cried inside thinking how much I was going to be charged. 60$ later for a estimate for a job that was going to cost me 1500$, i did what most people do who think they know cars.....they try and see if they can figure it out myself. Lucky I work with some people who actually know cars and steered me away from the home fix but suggested I call Highway Drive Repair Service and get a better quote. I was quoted 650$ for the job which was more then half of the other guy so I brought my car in and waited to get it fixed. I called the next day and was told that the mechanic had looked at it and really just wasn't sure about a blown head gasket. The next day I was called and told that they felt my water pump had gone bad and wanted to replace that. long story short the only thing wrong was the water pump. I saved alot of money, got my car fixed right and now feel i have a place I can trust for my car repairs.......after I try and get nowhere:) As for the people that work here, they were all very friendly and had no problem going over what they did with me. read more

So this updates prior review from 10/2019--it completed a clutch R&R. One peeve we had was over clutch cable that may come back to haunt me. You see, prior to above work, I had a clutch pedal that would not fully decompress from when you depressed clutch pedal. It'd sit there halfway up. So in my calling round, mechanics gave me their views and consensus was it'll be properly managed when you pay us to R&R your clutch. Enter HDRS. They received my feedback above & had no qualms with my clutch cable synced to car through ROCKAUTO LLC. However, there was difficulty R&R that part. Here's where it can improve. If you welcome customers who bring new parts and you have an issue internally as service provider, don't engage in peekaboo. My criticism is based on their barrelling right through proposed deadline without a call back meaning extra rental time was eating up their original proposal's savings over other bids. This is weakness because now their work mimicks same issue as before. The pedal is starting to soften on way back up. Within a few months, it's bound to completely return to samo samo state. So I lowered my overall rating on review cause trying to save money on repairs here backfired in real time and now in hindsight too. Caveat emptor, my peeps. read more

This place did a good job and had very affordable prices. I looked around before deciding to come here. It was further than other places, but it was worth it. They let you buy your own parts. Granted, this voids the warranty but it allows you to fix your car if you're on a budget like I was. They were even cheaper than Brake Masters, who quoted me way more. I came here for a search engine light with codes that indicated needing coil and spark plug changes. It's been several months and the codes haven't come back on, so I think they were honest and did everything they said. I'm glad I came here instead of doing the repair at Brake Masters or the Toyota dealership (which would have cost a fortune). read more

They did work on my truck. Had to take it right back because 4wd drive linkage wasn't connected. Then after a few years of the truck sitting I started getting it ready for my son. Once I started looking at everything bolts weren't put back and brackets were left unattached. These guys really suck at any major repairs. PS the truck was in for a rear main seal. read more

3rd X in 2 weeks i am taking my car back for a check engine light issue....they referred me to discount muffler who did some work. i was then sent back 2 Dena ......dropped$3100 would expect my car 2 perform like new(2006 Toyota Corolla w/186 k miles)went in for new battery and check engine light to be adressed and motor mounts. @exit point was told motor mounts had not been done/when this was told to them needed 2 be prioritized with new battery and check engine light issues,to get car passed into Emissions. Highway drive has earned my trust! I didn't think I would find a mechanic that I could say that about but they have proven to be honest and competent with all of my needs over the last five years. They have saved me thousands of dollars multiple times now. I would take my cars to several shops and get multipule estimates, seemed like it was always in the thousands of dollars. The first time I visited Highway Drive I was expecting a 1,200 to 1,500 dollar estimate falling in range with the two that I already had in hand. 24 bucks and my truck was fixed... :-) I had even shared the other estimates with them hoping they would offer to do the work for a little cheaper. They were honest though and let me know that all I needed was a new pulley. I moved an hour away about a year ago but they still have my business! read more

Worst experience ever at an auto shop. They did fix the problem the car was brought in for (AC) but upon pick up the check engine light was on and the car idled rough and had hesitation. It never had idle or hesitation or check engine light issues before... I should also add that they had the car for a week as well?!? All this trouble with absolutely no accountability on their part was completely shocking. There are certainly better shops in town. read more

EXCELENT!!!! I found out about this auto shop by word of mouth from the owner of a transmission shop. I have gone to Highway Drive Repair for several years. They ALWAYS go above and beyond my expectations. They have ALWAYS given me a bill for LESS $$ than what was quoted. I had a throttle positioning sensor replaced by them on my Dodge Durango. Almost a year later the sensor went bad. They replaced the sensor for FREE. They did not even charge me for the labor. I tried to pay, but they would not take my money. My wife and kids are hispanic. We have never seen even a hint of racism from anyone employed at this shop. The honesty and integrity of the owner and his employees is beyond any I have ever experienced at an automotive shop. I travel about 45 minutes to have this shop exclusively work on my vehicles. I will not go anywhere else. read more

Went here to have a clutch fixed on my car and was very disappointed with the service. When I got my car back it didn't seem right and the whole middle where my shifter is located was torn up and will now need to be repaired. I would most definitely not recommend this shop to anyone. When I went back to see if they would be able to resolve the problem, they had it in their mind it was right and nothing was wrong with it. I brought my truck in for repair as the check engine light was on. I paid them 0ver 600. for "fixing " it. I drove out with the light still on and the speedometer broken. I called and they told me to come back. I did and waited for approximetely 30 min. When the front office woman came back she informed me that I would have to mke another appointment, to leave the truck there and then theuywould give me another estimate on the repairs. She told me the speedometer didn't work because there was extensive damage under the truck by pack rats. I then was so upset I took it elsewhere to an honest person. They had unplugged the speedometer and lied about the extensive damage. A reasonable person would think they would have told me that twhen I picked it up. I would warn people to stay clear of this place, they will riop you off!!!! read more

Honest, quick, very reasonable rates (labor is $69/hr). Went in for what I thought was a blown-out right-side (rear) exhaust manifold gasket. (Typical parts and labor est is $150-$200). Turned out the EGR Valve's (freeze) plug blew out, but the valve was otherwise OK. Mechanic/Owner John plugged the leak (which he said was a common problem w/ Mopar/Dodge), didn't charge me parts for a new component when it wasn't req'd, and did the complete job for less than $50 out the door!!! This is only the 2nd time I've been there, but both times were the same experience- quick, honest, reasonable. Very busy place, went in without an appt. at 8:30AM, was told it probably wasn't going to be done that day, but got a call Same Day at 4 PM telling me it was done & ready to pick up! They respect my time and pocketbook. Never push any service on me other than what I go in for. As long as they keep doing business this way, they'll be my "GO-TO" shop whenever I can't do it myself... read more

We've always found John and staff to be exceptionally honest and the work is top notch. They recently "rescued" an older Corolla that was purchased for my daughter and they're estimate of $400, for repairs, was less than 1/4 the cost estimate provided by another well-known repair facility, that had come highly recommended by friends. As for the local Toyota dealer's estimate, you can just imagine. I've moved around quite a bit and finding a repair shop that one can trust, is always a challenge. I won't take my cars anywhere else. Stay away! Horrible business practice and customer service. Very unprofessional. Shop did expensive repairs WITHOUT owner authorization! If I could give then negative stars I would. Had an injector issue with my vehicle, this shop was recommended by another mechanic. Got a bad impression from the first phone call I had with them. Rude, short, and seemed annoyed I was bringing them business. Once I turned my vehicle over to them they didn't ask a single question or backstory to my vehicle. I had to make sure they wrote down my issue. The next day I received a quote for the work. I asked if they were able to locate the problem. They said no. How can you quote a customer on work they haven't found. I talked to the tech Bob, and told him the issue with my vehicle. Bob then told me he would run more tests in order to figure out the problem then give me a call back. That following day I received another call saying my vehicle was ready. I asked where they found the problem and Mary said they didn't find the problem it was running fine. I assumed no work was done to it as Mary never gave me a price for work, parts, etc. Once I arrived to pick up my vehicle, I was told my bill was $1,000. I asked what was done and was told they replaced the injector. I told them I was never advised the repair was going to be done. All I got was a, "oh sorry, I guess it was a miscommunication." Not even an offer to make things better so charging me an unexpected thousand dollars. That is no way to run a business. I AM NEVER RETURNING. read more

This man John that owns this shop is a very trusting and honest mechanic. I can't tell you any other mechanic in Tucson that I would take my vehicle to. I owned a Nissan Pathfinder and got a personal recommendation to take it to him and I was ecstatic with how he took care of a problem with my lights and the price he charged! When I had problems getting it started and stranded it had been close to closing time on a Saturday and when I explained that my daughter and I were stranded he said he would swing by and check it for me. He was on his way out if town. Turned out to be the starter. He got it running and told us to take it home because it may not start again. He never charged me. How many other mechanics will do that!? When I sold my Pathfinder I was going to buy a Daiwoo so I called the shop and asked their opinion and she told me to steer clear. I listened. Now I need him to check an overheating problem on my Chevy Lumina Van. I have no fear of being overcharged or getting unnecessary work done. He's not money hungry, he doesn't need to be.
