The coffee here is terrific. There's always two brews. One a light roast, one dark. The price is a little lower than Blue Bottle but the quality is just about as good. Also, the paper cups are some of the most durable I've ever gotten from a cafe. It's also in a peach of a location at Market Hall. You couldn't get better. But Highwire Rockridge is a 2 star review. You ever heard of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? Well the baristas here sure fit the bill. Sometimes they are Dr. Jekyll. Ask a question and you will get an answer. The barista will answer it plainly. Nothing fancy. Just a plain answer. This is the nicest service you will ever get here. Ever. This is Dr. Jekyll. Then there is Mr. Hyde. When you ask a question, the barista answers it meanly. I mean meanly. Not rudely. Meanly. The barista talks to you in a condescending tone and gives you a dirty look. The look basically means shut up, give me the money and keep your mouth shut until you get your coffee. I've asked my SO if I was imagining things and my SO says that some of the baristas are uber snobby. If it wasn't for the great coffee and the location, this place would get zero stars. But if you're in a good enough mood to risk a Mr. Hyde barista, it's worth 2 stars. But only if you're in a really good mood. I mean really good. You've been warned. read more

Their Howling Wolf coffee is seriously as SMOOTH as coffee gets. Howling Woof is their cold-brew coffee that they push through some fancy nitrogen process, giving the coffee a very smooth and rich taste. I took it black and it was perfect. I don't understand the negative reviews for customer service. I have always been treated like a princess here and the people behind the counter are friendly and helpful. The wait might be long, but it's not any longer than the wait at your local Starbucks, and the coffee is 10x better, so quit your bellyaching. The man behind the counter was so cool that he allowed me to divide my beans into two separate bags, 1/2 French and 1/2 Italian, so I could sample the beans at home. I know you all miss Peaberry's, but please give this place a chance! First off, the new layout has taken some time getting used to, but since the remodel they've added pastries from Starter Bakery which are so good they rival the pastries from across the way at Market Hall Bakery. Now for the coffee. I've become completely obsessed with the Italian roast and French roast blends. Not bitter, but just rich strong caramelly flavor with just a touch of tang. I usually buy whole beans and grind at home and use a french press. I usually take my coffee black, but I've found that just a pinch of cream with the Italian roast in the morning is enough to jump start me for the day. read more

This is mostly a review of the coffee/beans from Highwire...amazing flavors! As others have stated, once you get past the "color" of the bean roast, ie....dark, med, light as a way to describe coffee, it's really about best flavor, and the beans are roasted to achieve flavor regardless of color. This place definitely has amazing beans. I used to buy Blue Bottle beans to make drip coffee at home, but no more!! I LOVE Highwire. It's less expensive than Blue Bottle and equally good, if not better. My favorites that I've tried thus far are the Columbian and the Sumatra. The Yirgacheffe was a bit weak for my taste (it was good for french press though), but I know the quality is high. As for the drinks they have in store, I'm not so into lattes, so I can't speak for those, but I often come in just to buy beans and I love that with bean purchases they'll throw in a small cup of coffee, it's really a nice touch. It also lets me try different roasts, which is nice for variety and testing to see if there's another roast that's interesting. So I hesitate to reveal this--but I used to somewhat organize my week around buying coffee beans based on their roasting schedule. If you are the type of coffee drinker that gets somewhat depressed when you're out of beans, you know what I'm talking about. I used to be a devoted blue bottle drinker. But Highwire is now top dog--and how. The taste is as good, but a bit more balanced overall. It's neither light roasted (sightglass, sometimes blue bottle) and sour... Nor is it dark roasted like Peets (lacking the subtlety and balance) and "safe." It is a beautifully achieved medium roast (structured and characteristic) as a general rule. And I have the perception that the prices are more reasonable (than BB, 4B, LH. $$$Verve$$$. --you know who you are). At the top of beans we track like crack cocaine: the coveted Yirgacheffe Blue Nile. Pleasant, characteristic, and exquisite. It is an every day luxury. I know the coffee mafia will decaffeinate me now for ratting the secret--but it's just too good to keep quiet about. Plus, Blue Nile is not the only thing they do great. All their drip coffees have a following--you just only have to share your preferences with the crack PhD staff, and they will gently steer you to happiness. I also like their Guatemalan and Sumatra coffees personally. I do actually drive out from San Francisco to get the beans. The roasting schedule for HW is Mondays and Thursdays, with their delivery truck making its way from Emeryville to Rockridge somewhere around 2 pm. WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG? I mean, is it one of those trucks from the Flintstones? Ok, it's a small roastery, not Fedex, so sometimes the truck comes at 3 pm. Why do I care? Let's just say, the Bay Bridge toll back to SF goes up $2 at 3 pm. If I can get the beans by 230 pm, no one gets hurt. Is that too much to ask? Some will tell you that the beans taste better when given a few days. I personally think that's just a bunch of hooey from scared baristas, worrying they have to deal with uppity customers like me. Cmon! The coffee smells amazing on the first day too! The staff--they are usually wonderful and take pride in their work. If you come without pretense, they will respond accordingly. Now, it's the golden time for we supporters. It's nice to know them now before they get too big and famous. I hate to give ANY business a below-average rating, but in this case, I am compelled by one particular assy, holier-than-though employee - some dude with dark hair, a lot of tattoos, and a crappy attitude. Let me start by saying that I used to visit Highwire quasi-regularly for the last couple of years. The cashier always seemed put-off at having to take my order, but after a few repeat visits and making small talk with that same cashier, she warmed up a bit. However if there was a different cashier, then I got the pleasure of starting all over again with the "I'm doing you a favor" attitude. What IS with the attitude? Is it part of their training? What put me over the edge was my experience with the "decaf espresso" I recently purchased. I took it home and made my morning latte as usual! It tasted fine but was sooooooooooooooo weak!!! After a few days/lattes, I decided to bring it back - NOT demand any sort of compensation - but rather, to share my experience so they wouldn't sell their decaf to the next unsuspecting customer as a suitable coffee for making espresso drinks at home. The jerk at the counter couldn't have been a bigger idiot. He unkindly explained that there is no such thing as espresso roast (smartass!) and that I should just use more coffee to get the "strength" I wanted. What a dope. Why would I use twice as much Highwire coffee when I can use the normal amount of the *other$ guys' product?!?! I handed him the bag telling him I hate to throw things away and that maybe they could donate it somehow. He looked me in the eye as he tossed it in the garbage. I always prefer to patronize the local guys over the big chains, but in this case would gladly seek out the consistency. Fortunately, I have many options along College Ave and will be visiting Cole Coffee today as it's time to replenish my supply of decaf ESPRESSO ROAST beans at home. Would you return to Highwire? UPDATE 4/7: The owner responded to my review and we discussed my experience. He was kind and gracious, explaining that this was a good opportunity for improvement in his shop. Further, he acknowledged me while the cashier seemed incapable. He also apologized for the cashier's behavior. He also offered to make it right and invited me to meet him at the shop and review the grind of the beans and how it affects the flavor, complete with tasting. Donald's interest and consideration of my experience has compelled me to raise my rating up from 1 star - one bad egg shouldn't spoil the batch and I really do love Highwire's vibe. read more

I travel across town to have coffee at Highwire. I love the staff -- they are friendly and really seem to love what they do -- especially the kind trio of owners, who are especially welcoming, sincere, and inspiring. Coffee at Market Hall got so much more welcoming when Highwire came in -- not to mention more delicious. I love the French Roast the most, and their teas are incredible. If you're a tea drinker, try the Earl Grey and the Capetown Rooibos... wow! And I'm so happy Highwire has Starter Bakery treats, especially Kouign Amann; there's nothing like it, and it goes perfectly with a fresh cup of HW coffee. One of my favorite things to do on the weekend is get a cup of Highwire coffee and stroll around Market Hall and the sweet Rockridge neighborhood. Needless to say, I'm so glad HW is there. read more

Convenient place to get coffee and a pastry. The service is efficient and there are a few tables outside, but I'm not a fan of their coffee. The coffee is a bit over-roasted and has a bitter taste to me. If you like Starbucks style, where you enjoy coffee with cream/milk/sugar, then this coffee will be more to your liking. I am very glad to have found them. 7:30 in the morning having run out the house in a rush, a croissant from next door (although you could buy locally made pastries at Highwire, I just don't feel right about it with the bakery literally less than 20 paces away. This coffee will slap you across the face and then give you a big kiss afterwards. It's that good. I'm still groggily trying to sort which beans I've tried, but 7am Rebecca forgets to ask most the time. Most the time I'm too busy trying to suck the sweet nectar down fast so I could catch the train, but internally fighting myself to slow down and enjoy every last drop. btw, for the moment, the Espresso is my favorite as far as I can tell. WOW. I can't believe it's taken me as long as it has to write up a review for this place, but I've got to do it here and now, so here it goes... I've lived in the Rockridge neighborhood for 10+ years, and somehow and someway managed to miss this spot hiding in plain spot. But upon discovery, I was blown away by the attentiveness, exemplary customer service, and total chill vibe of staff and environment - the cornerstones which coffee shops should (ideally) be built upon. Since that first day (May 2013) I've been going back ever since, because this place is AWESOME in every way. I've never been a huge coffee snob (even after working for Peet's Coffee & Tea for a couple of years), but I know exceptional coffee when I taste it - let me tell you that Highwire Coffee Roasters beats other coffee shops in almost every category from speed of service, expertise, and execution, down to taste and variety (as far as the coffee and tea selections go). Seriously, I've almost stayed away from the heavy-hitters like Starbucks, Peet's and Blue Bottle at every turn, because *this* place is the place to be. ***PROS***: -Unlike other people, I've practiced the virtue of patience and am always down to waiting an extra few minutes for my drink: as they say, "Good things come to those who wait", and this is no exception - the drinks are beautifully presented, decadent, and a true testament to the artisan/craftsmanship that goes into their beverages; did I mention Highwire's drinks are strong? If you want weak-tasting coffee, go somewhere else, for this ain't really the place for you, dig? -I love the fact that if you're sitting at the bar area, you can strike up a casual conversation with just about anyone, whether the person's behind the counter or on the other side casually waiting for their order: the atmosphere is very warm, inviting, and not at all exclusive. The baristas here know their stuff about coffee and tea. OH man. This Seattleite coffee snob was IMPRESSED! First of all, they're local roasters and clearly pay attention to hiring people who not only care about coffee, but are passionate about sharing that with others! I had some good chats with several people here, and they were all warm and excited about what they did. I love it. Secondly, the cofffffeeeeeeee. I could drink this lovely nectar all day long. It's rich and creamy and isn't acrid at all. I don't actually know how they make it so smooth! Last but not least- it's located in Market hall adjacent to a bakery!! Don't mind if I do! Here is my attempt at a "normal" introduction: Good people, great coffee, and an awesome atmosphere. Come to Highwire Coffee Roasters if you want espresso beverages done right! Who am I fooling...that's not me... So here is the real stuff! I like coffee. I like coffee before I sleep. I like coffee when I'm petting my dog. I like coffee on National Tea Day. And I love coffee especially when I'm having one from and at Highwire. To some this place is a bit too noisy and busy. Well I'm used to that and if anything, miss the vibe. Here in the states, the benchmark of any great coffee shops includes (my opinion): 1. Clean space and cool decor 2. Serves good coffee. 3. Free WiFi 4. Serves good pastries and light snacks, but never a full on restaurant. 5. Hoobastank playing in the background. No? Just me? 6. Quiet 7. Plenty of tables, chairs, and electrical plugs. While all of this is fine and dandy. I miss the busy and lively coffee scene in Europe, Asia, and a lot of the world. The loud steamer hissing noise to the sound of cashier counting coins to people sipping their coffee to grocery shopping happening next door. And Highwire delivers that memory for me time and time again. In an area of the world saturated with "coffee" shops, it's nice to have place like Highwire where I can really get a sense of the neighborhood. Not going to go in-depth about the coffee because there is no need. High quality beans roasted and cared for by knowledgeable baristas. Not a good place to get work done seeing as the tables are small and lack of outlets. The coffee - especially the lattes - are extraordinarily good. The barista that seems to always be there on the weekends is top notch and really should be at a more high profile coffee shop. The reason that I won't be going back to Highwire is that the clerks working the register aren't all that friendly and seem to be put off by all the demanding customers. Worse yet is the waiting area. Highwire gets a little corner of the Market Hall at Rockridge and customers waiting for their beverages either need to wait on the sidewalk or get tossed around like a leaf in the wind by customers waiting to place their orders and customers adding milk/creamer/sugar to their beverages. If Highwire were the only coffee shop in town it would be one thing, but Rockridge is blessed with about 10 different cafes along College Avenue and most of them offer great coffee and a much better customer service. read more

What a great find! I took their coffee roasting & cupping tour as part of Yelp's Field Trips this weekend and it was one of my favorite classes. Everyone there was extremely welcoming, the class is super organized (which is usually a pet peeve of mine), the information was great, the roasting house is amazing, literally, everything was awesome. Aside from the information, what I liked best about the experience was getting to know Robert & Rich throughout the class. They had a really comfortable (not to mention knowledgable - holy cow) vibe that really put everyone at ease. They explained pretty complex things in simple, easy-to understand terms, which I really appreciated. I walked out there with so much knowledge about the coffee process. This business has a lot of heart, and while there are always some hiccups when you start/convert any new business, I see lots of success in their future...and definitely some happy customers. Seems like a 2-1/2 wave coffee roaster cafe. Something kind of 1990s about it: Darker roasts, more blends than hip modern roasters. They offer a pre-brewed drip coffee of the day, in large tanks with no obvious sign of which kind of beans they use. I've had to ask. The coffee is ok. They appear to have a pour-over coffee option, but it's not very clear how that works and I've never seen anyone order that. Wish they sold their beans in bags smaller than 16 oz. That's too big of a commitment so I haven't tried them at home yet. I'd like to though. Need to find someone to split a pound with. I hear they share a vintage German coffee roasting machine with Linea and Wrecking Ball coffee roasters, which is interesting as they are doing something completely different. . I saw that Craftsman and Wolves bakery in SF switched from Sightglass to Highwire recently. UPDATE: I went back a few days ago. They did have labels on the urns denoting which coffees they were serving, which is good news. read more

Absolute best coffee in the East Bay. If you are a fan of artisan roasting, a la Blue Bottle, Four Barrel, etc., you've got to try Highwire. I'd say it's handily my favorite. Also less expensive, which is a boon in the overpriced coffee scene. I'd have given out 5 stars, except for the very rude blonde woman who was rather nasty to me and insisted on charging me 50 cents more than every single other staff member had for a whole year AND arguing about it. I let her win the argument and get the extra $ because she wanted to so badly. But it affected my experience enough that I avoid Saturday mornings there and always secretly hope to never see her again. Throughout my coffee ventures, I have finally arrived at Highwire Coffee Roasters. Sadly, I wasn't impressed by their coffee. They are located within Market Hall, and have a pretty sweet setup. Lots of coffee to choose from, but I was sad they didn't do pour-overs of their roasts. The lady informed me they had two of their roasts pre-made to order. I opted for their blend, and it was alright. Smooth, low bitterness and acidity, and no overwhelming notes. I'll pass on the next time I see Highwire coffee. read more

Heard of this place through an obscure coffee blog and decided to take the plunge by ordering a pound of their beans. I tend to order their blends to give me a good idea. I had it as a pour over first, then tried it as a cold brew. I gotta tell you their coffee is one of the best in the Bay Area. My favs are Tightrope and Java Grande. Went to their location in Rockridge; not really technically a cafe, but basically a small sitting area amongst a marketplace building. Everything I get is very good. read more

Absolutely wonderful! I found this place while in town on business. The baristas recognized that I was trying to learn more about their beans and when I asked questions about roasting and flavors, they were able to give me a run down on each product. When I ordered my latte the barista made a wonderfully balanced drink that allowed me to enjoy the flavor of the bean with a hint of flavor that complimented the drink but did not overpower it. Achieving a balanced drink seems to be one of the most difficult things for baristas. These gals were on the money. The atmosphere was pretty cool as well, albeit a bit busy for my taste. I found it interesting that despite today's political climate, Highwire had people of many different ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds positively interacting with one another. It was so refreshing with all the BS politics polluting our world today. These people clearly didn't care, and came to highwire to connect with each other and be in community. In addition to the great latte, I bought two bags of espresso beans to bring home. I enjoyed about two months of great coffee from them and look forward to the next Business trip in their area so I can return and restock. Totally a great place to visit. read more

Service is usually great - BUT, there are a few grumpelstilskins on the other side of the counter. Coffee is tasty - a little overly roasted but it does the trick. I get an occasional cup of coffee here, plus the odd pastry and a recent Chemex (to replace an old beloved that got busted by a burglar, grrrrr). But what makes me love Highwire is the incredibly friendly, welcoming owners and staff. I was considering getting a Kone for my Chemex but unsure if I really wanted to pull the trigger on a $60 filter replacement. They let me take a display model home to try out for a few days! Then I had a nice long chat with one of the guys about technique and relative merits, and this is after deciding it wasn't for me. Walked away whistling. I see a few negative reviews about service, but I've only gotten the best of vibes there--way better than Peaberry's used to be, probably because (the very nice) owner had sort of stepped back and left it to hirelings. Not so Highwire, the owners are present, super enthusiastic about what they're doing, and it shows. I was kinda bummed when Peaberry's got replaced, because I'm a creature of habit and it was my neighborhood joint, but Highwire is what local is all about. read more
