A total hidden gem in one of the busiest touristy areas of Brooklyn, right under the BK bridge amongst the busy foot traffic that used to be a great Mexican spot has transformed into what is now Hildur. This glorious restaurant named after one of the owner's grandmother, essentially serves Swedish cuisine prepared with a touch of French technique and plating... What a breathtakingly beautiful and delicious way to show off Scandinavian food. Influences also come from other parts of Scandinavia like Denmark and Norway too on their menu. To those that might not be a pickled fish fan, you MUST try their house pickled herring to start. Not fishy in the least bit, but the fish is firm just enough and the sliver of the medium soft poached egg, bit of finely diced shallots, super crunchy buttery rye crumbles and a smidge dollop of creme fraiche will make any pickled fish skeptic an immediate fan. Their lamb belly Benedict is a definite order too! Not gamey and the perfect balance of richness and lightness in one dish is a thing of beauty. The silky slightly butter scrambled eggs were the perfect balance for the gravlox that was served on top! Their market salad should definitely NOT be passed up as well! And can't say enough of all the staff there who were warm and friendly the minute we walked in the door and our server was simply marvelous! Had an amazing meal at Hildur tonight. Sat in the back garden with super service and an incredible vibe. Really enjoyed the food... subtle flavors and really interesting combinations. Had the oysters which had a bit of dill oil and super delicate. Pickled herring was amazing, with a bit of sweet and a savory crunch. Everything was perfectly balanced. Came here for dinner on a Saturday night with a friend and had a lovely time. The inside is absolutely beautiful and the outdoor patio is even more lovely with twinkle lights and lots of greenery. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive. To drink we got the chilled red barbera which was so refreshing on a hot day and tasted like pomegranate juice. We started with the white asparagus and charred cabbage which were both incredible and must gets. The sauce they each come with was absolutely incredible and quite filling. For our entrees we got the burger which was my favorite entree and the fries were nice and crispy. We also got the meatballs which I wish had a bit more flavor on their own but were perfection eaten as a bite with everything else that comes with the dish. For dessert we got the Swedish princess cake which was truly incredible and I am still thinking about it! Beautiful place with delicious food and would come back! read more

A lovely interior( think Scandinavian farmhouse) larger looking than the petite exterior near the part of Brooklyn that's very hype right now. Ate : Rye bread service Chicories salad Onion soup Atlantic halibut Swedish meatballs Total: $112 without tip The price point is pretty fair for the quality of food. The caviar spread with the bread plus house cultured butter was lovely My favorite was the halibut. Perfectly cooked & paired with an unusual though flattering veg action. Everything was outstanding. Popped into to this little spot for a drink in their courtyard. It was just lovely. Family friendly but still down to earth yet chic. Didn't eat the food although all of the dishes coming out looked delicious! We had a few cocktails but stand out was the espresso martini. I know it's cliche and trendy but it is a great bar hop drink to keep you energized and not too tipsy! Ha! We've been getting around town trying them all and this one was THE BEST. Beautiful space that took over the previous Gran Electra. They've done a really nice job with decorating. It's warm, inviting, and fairly minimal We were super excited to come here, knowing its from the same team as Colonie which we like. However, maybe the Scandinavian/French style food is not our thing. We came with a group of 4 and tried a few dishes, but unfortunately all fell flat. - Brown bread service: comes with 2 pieces of very dry/crumbly brown bread and 2 pieces of their house 'crackers' which seem to just be thinly sliced bread that is baked til crisp. The smorgaskaviar almost reminded me of a sour cream like texture and the cultured butter had zero butter flavor and was quite cold/frozen and hard to spread - Warm crab dip: served with the same house crackers as above. It does have quite a bit of crab in it, so no complaints here - Chicories: this was a good veggie to share. The dressing was bright and lemony and I liked the hazelnuts that added a nice crunch. In general though, chicories tend to be a little bitter - Swedish meatballs: probably the favorite of the night, but I don't think that says much from our group. It came with a potato puree and a cucumber salad that was very sour - Black trumpet mushrooms: served over barley and with roasted squash. This had a foamed cream on top. Again, not big fans of this dish. Nothing really stood in out in flavor or texture Service is wonderful and they checked on us frequently. However we were a little slow to finish on the apps/small plates, but it seemed like they wanted us to finish those before bringing out the main dishes read more

Very Nice People! Unfortunately Hildur is most likely not going to make it. This is a very lovely place with interesting cuisine and lovely people serving and assisting. Unfortunately the restaurant just doesn't understand some basics of the business. Most notably that people don't like a restaurant that is STINGY. Everyone knows the restaurant business is slim margins and hard work. WE GET IT! What we don't get is when a place charges for bread ($12) and the table is served a VERY meager 4 pieces of bread. We are all now used to paying for bread, being charged a fee to pay with credit, entrees stripped down to one or two elements and all the other things needed to help margins. When an establishment enlists every margin increasing gambit it is really a bridge too far. We were at Hildur on a Saturday night and it was pretty slow. I'm thinking the staff and management must be scratching their collective heads as the ambiance, service and food are all very good. The reason business is not better is we don't like the feeling of being nickled and dimed . Add some mashed potato to an entree. With the herring , serve it with a bit of bread. C'mon guys; you created a pretty unique experience and you just Miss! read more

Awful service and mediocre food. We were here nearly 2 1/2 hours on a recent Friday night, and at least half that time was spent waiting for anyone to take our order or deliver it. Not even the drinks came out at the same time --1 glass of wine arrived, then we had to wait 15 minutes for the 3 cocktails that others had ordered. Weren't allowed to order appetizers until our drinks order was completed (which is weird). We sat with empty glasses for at least 15 minutes after finishing our initial drinks and finally had to flag down a random server to bring a wine list. The main dishes are so-so but not worth the lousy service and inflated prices. If you want Swedish meatballs, go to Ikea. Too bad, because the previous restaurant in this spot was excellent. read more

You know how after a nightmare restaurant experience you'll recall it with your fellow dining veterans for years to come? The experience my dinner mates and I endured at Hildur last Friday night was that sort of once-in-a-decade ordeal that compels this, my first-ever restaurant review. Yes, the atmosphere in the outdoor seating area is charming, inherited from the much-missed Mexican restaurant that no longer occupies this site. The food - from a somewhat limited menu that left us scratching our heads as to just what qualifies this as a "Scandinavian" restaurant - was acceptable. At least, my "Swedish meatballs" ($29) were reminiscent of the frozen meatballs Ikea sells in a two-pound bag for $15. Hildur's version was served alongside watery mashed potatoes grandly billed as "pommes puree." But my towering complaint is the service - erratic, sluggish and downright witless. When our drink orders were at long last taken, another long delay ensued before the glass of wine one of our party ordered came. Another 20 minutes dragged by before just two of the $20 cocktails were delivered. More time passed before the final drink appeared. After yet another spell, our two appetizers showed up, with a long interval having passed in between. Along the way, when we were able to flag down our waiter for progress reports, he had little more to say than "it's coming." Much, much later, three of us received our main dish, while our fourth would-be diner sat hungry. "It's coming," the waiter told him. By that point we were moments from giving up and heading for the exit when that fourth order was finally presented. By then, the hostess, sensing our discontent, apologized by saying the kitchen was "backed up." But the problems we encountered weren't solely due to a "backed-up" kitchen (and bar) - even if that had been a sufficient excuse - but to Hildur's across-the-board systemic breakdown. Just consider the waiter, who was not just lacking but clearly untrained: When a bottle of wine for the table was finally delivered after a (yes) long delay, he was hard-put even to know how to serve it. So here's a dining tip, especially for visitors to this lovely Brooklyn neighborhood: There are at least a dozen restaurants within a five-minute walk from Hildur, ANY of which is a preferable option. As for the four of us, we will be regaling friends with tales of our dinner-from-hell at Hildur for years to come. read more
