This was our first experience using a moving company and we wish we had just done it ourselves. 80% of our furniture was damaged in some way as well as two holes put in our walls of our brand new house. Our son's changing table was damaged to the point it is unsafe to use and they only want to compensate us $294 when the damage was well above $2000 on top of paying them $1300 for a move less than 2 miles down the road. BEWARE! Absolutely horrific experience. Our belongings were taken August 6th and scheduled for delivery August 17th. Our sales consultant and move coordinator NEVER reached out to us to inform us about a delay. Move coordinator NEVER contacted us or reached out after our belongings were taken. A different representative called us at 5:00 PM on August 16th, the NIGHT BEFORE, our scheduled delivery to tell us our belongings were going to be LATE. She LIED to me, told me our shipment was IN TRANSIT and LIED about the location of our belongings. Representatives CONTINUED to lie with notifications through text messages about the status of our belongings. It wasn't until I called Mayflower directly that a customer service agent told me our belongings NEVER LEFT THE ORIGINGAL LOCATION. My family continues to suffer because of Hilldrup's lack of communication, deception, and inability to perform the services we paid for. It is inexcusable to deceive customers. Hilldrup moved my boyfriend and I from Charlotte to Denver, CO and I had such a great experience! From the day Mike Sandell came out to do an estimate (this was the only company to come out and do an in-person estimate) to the drop off of our items in Denver, I couldn't have asked for a more stress-free move. Not one thing was broken in transit and Hilldrup was right on time to pick our items up in Charlotte. Our move coordinator Rachel Weiss-Fuentes coordinated with the company in Denver for the delivery of our items which was great. I didn't have to do anything. I got to pick the day for our items to be dropped off which allowed us some much-needed flexibility. The price we were quoted was the final price we paid - no hidden fees, surprise charges, etc. I 100% recommend Hilldrup for a cross-country move, as well as a local Charlotte move! If I ever find myself back in Charlotte, I will definitely use them again. read more

We hired Hilldrup to move from Mooresville to Kannapolis (local move). They were the most expensive quote but we "thought" we would have the highest level of service and attention to details. It was absolutely the opposite of our exceptions. From day 1 when the driver was instructed he could not turn the truck around in our cul-de-sac and that he would have to back out. He elected to try it anyway and destroyed several thousand dollars of landscaping (we lived in The Point). Now the HOA is chasing them down to pay for the damage. This was our 7th move in 25+ years and experienced more damage to our furniture in this one move than all the others combined. We took pictures of all the damage and yet the workers would try to deny they broke the items. I spoke to our move coordinator and detailed everything (this is the short version) and she said she would call me right back........3 days later she calls and says she has our final bill with no mention of our problems. Terrible experience. Make sure you are with them when they are filling out inventory sheets when packing. Share on us for not. All furniture was packed when we got sheets. Then when moved in, our 3-4 year old nice Bassett furniture that is pretty costly has some noticeable damage and a dresser even had a hole in the back. Wouldn't cover much of the damage because they marked every piece of furniture we own as badly worn, scratched, gauges, water damaged. Please tell me how a head board and foot board are water damaged. Really and the value they place on repair or coverage is nothing compared to value of furniture. Here is $50-$100 to cover your $1,000+ piece of furniture. I didn't buy quality furniture to last me a few years. Not the company that was sold to me by sales person. read more

Hilldrup worked hard to win our business in down economy. Overall, Hilldrup performed well, but, not great. They lived up to their promise to not exceed their estimate, even though they underestimated our shipment by about 1500 pounds. The move coordinator was always reachable at a moment's notice. The driver was professional and exceptionally punctual. The truck crews on both ends were reasonably professional. Some things to watch for with Hilldrup (and probably any other mover): 1) If it's important to you, write it into the tariff agreement. Our move consultant promised us particular shipping methods that the driver initially refused to comply with on the morning of the move-out. I reminded the move coordinator of our tariff clauses, and offered to let Hilldrup out of the contract and let another company move us. The coordinator and driver quickly worked something out to make it happen. 2) Hilldrup's packers have to be watched. I spent 6 hours working through the night before our move-out, because the packers were anxious to get out of dodge at 5 PM and simply left entire cabinets, our nursery, and our back patio completely unpacked. Thankfully, I still had packing supplies from my previous move handy. In the end, my wife didn't understand the importance of doing a thorough walk through before signing off on the packing. 3) Be very specific about valuable articles and double check their work. We declared four items up front as family heirlooms that were priceless to us. One item was a set of family silver. My great grandmother worked cleaning houses during the Great Depression to buy this silver as a gift for my now past grandparents. The silver was literally turned upside down and jammed into a hanging clothes box, as if they had some empty space to fill in the box. The silver was intact, but, the original silver box suffered damage. Likewise, we had a one of kind folk art piece that was our wedding gift from my parents. It is a palmetto sea grass basket from a unique artist in Charleston, and is irreplaceable. The basket was also jammed into a box that had some left over room. What we think happened is that we had set aside the four valuable items on our dining room table for special handling, and the packers forgot to pack them until the last minute. So, rather than properly packaging them with due diligence, they just rushed and threw them in boxes with open space to get out of work on time. 4) The move coordinator promised to have one of their affiliates in Cali handle our city parking permits for the truck on move-in. The move coordinate then pawned this off on my as we were driving through the middle of the country. We got in done, but, Hilldrup dropped the ball on this detail. I would likely consider Hilldrup for a future move. I had the misperception that I could trust a full service big name moving company to handle my relocation with little involvement by me or my wife. The reality is that no one will pack your belongings as well as you will. The moving industry likes to overpromise and underdeliver. Hilldrup is probably among the best carriers out there, but, you still have to oversee every detail if you want it done right. read more

We used Hilldrup to move us from our House to a temporary Townhouse, while we built a new home. We have moved a total of 7 times, prior to this move, cross country and local. The move itself was not nearly as terrible as the people and the organization behind it. What an incompetent group of buffoons! Their estimator, who had supposedly been doing this for 20 plus years, was so far off on our quote, compared to the actual and the amount of people needed --- they should have fired her. After walking their professional appraiser through our home that was to be moved, inside and out, she missed the ENTIRE garage and back porch. I asked them to pack and move our entire house --- she somehow missed the "pack" part of the equation also. After all was said and done, they tried to charge us an extra $3,000 over their original quote!! And, it took them a day longer than they originally quoted. Left several messages to discuss the issues we had with their management --- never received a phone call back. We hired Hilldrup to move us from North Carolina to New Jersey. At the very end of the North Carolina loading things started to go down hill. I questioned our driver as to the procedure for protecting and not loosing the hardware for the beds. He didn't use the "parts box" that he was supposed to use to secure these items. They instead packed them in lots of packing tape. He (Brandon) assured me that there would be NO PROBLEM in New Jersey as he was an experienced mover. My instints told me otherwise, but I trusted him. They did arrive a day or two early with our stuff which was great but at the end of a very long day guess what? They couldn't find the hardward to our beds! Yes, they lost or misplaced it. At that point all I got was excuses for the lost parts. They put the beds together the best they could without the parts and said they would be back to rectify the situation. They never showed back up so here I went searching from hardware to hardware store to purchase the mssing parts. After several hours I got what I needed and had to take the bed completely apart to fix it properly. Ever lifted a queen sized mattress and boxspring by yourself? Not much fun. We also had to turn in a claim for broken bottles and a picture frame. My claim for the broken bottles was denied "because I didn't save the broken pieces of glass for inspection". REALLY? Inspection? The driver told us not to worry about the broken bottles as we would be reinbursed. Guess he was wrong again. Lastly, I was questioned about the receipt for the bed hardware. It was only a few dollars in parts but what they didn't want to compensate me for was my trouble and effort to get these important parts. Anyway the mess is behind us. Buyer beware. read more

Family moved to Charlotte, NC from Newport Beach California 3 years ago and the move went so well, nothing missing or damaged. Fast forward to August 6, 2018 when we made the worst decision of our lives to hire United Hilldrup Van Lines to move our household items back to CA. I was shown colored pictures of how they protect your furniture and other large items that cannot be boxed. Shown detailed photos of how it is loaded and shipped in their trucks, this is why we decided to go with them. FALSE ADVERTISING AND LIES!!!!! So the sting of having to pay $2,500 more for their great service and reputation really hurts now that most of the items that were not in boxes came damaged or did not come at all! Thank goodness I packed the boxes really well because they looked pretty bad upon delivery. Lost end table, mirrors, 2 boxes with pictures and personal items that cannot be replaced. Damaged kids 1 year old bikes so bad had to have them repaired as were crushed pretty bad in the truck. Which brings me to their truck...I was asked to go inside to help locate my items and what I saw was disgusting! How the items were thrown inside and just dumped on anything without thought, no wonder why my items came in the condition they did. They shrink wrapped my couch and chairs but most of the wrapping was torn so my new furniture is now dirty and ripped. Piano bench and cord missing to Yamaha Clavinova piano. Driver calls 11 days later saying he found the bench and will bring it. Ordered the new cord and tested piano, sound now garbled and low - PIANO MUST HAVE BEEN DROPPED!!! What the heck! Damaged so many other furniture pieces, too many to notate. Why did we bother moving our items and paying the moving fee???? Claims department is a joke and an insult to someone that has lost so much of their belongings. To others with similar issues, you can file a complaint with the Dept of Transportation DOT. There should really be a class action lawsuit against this moving company. Bad business, bad customer service, just BAD!!! read more

This was our third move with United Van Lines and Hilldrup didn't disappoint. Angela went out of her way to provide excellent customer service, even meeting us to drop off some free boxes in our town. Everything arrived in one piece from NC to NY in the specified delivery window, even though this was during the big storm. Most importantly for us, communication was clear and timely. Prices were competitive and we are even getting a bit of a refund! The best moving company ever. read more

My 82 year old mother chose Hlidrup to move the contents of her one bedroom apartment from Charlotte to a town 5 hours away within the state of North Carolina. She had gotten a bid from Mike who came to the apartment and saw what was involved. We packed all that was discussed in our estimate, albeit in boxes available to us at the local stores.They agreed to pack some fragile kitchenware, the contents of her small hutch, several large pictures,and the hanging clothes in her closet into a wardrobe box. In speaking with the move coordinator,Rachel,we also requested that the movers would drive to a small storage unit nearby on their way out of town to pick up several pre-packed boxes and a large dresser. We agreed to pay a bit more for this than the original estimate; she thought it would be in the $100 range. The estimator/owner Mike came by the evening before we were supposed to move and saw what we were packing .... no feedback other than he thought we wouldn't be ready. No mention of packing into larger boxes... The next day the movers showed up late, after calling us saying they couldn't find the place.They had a guy unhook the washer and dryer, as pre-arranged. They had 2 people initially, since one person couldn't make it. After awhile a third person , from the warehouse, showed up... luckily , because it took them 7 hours to pack the truck. They packed all of our boxes into their larger moving boxes.Neither Mike nor Rachel had told them about the stop at the storage unit.I had to remind them to also pack the dryer they'd unhooked. There was then a discussion as to whether they could drive the following day and unload, since they might exceed the number of hours they could work contractually. So for awhile, there was the possibility they would pack us all up on Monday, and not be able to unload till Wednesday, all for a 5 hour drive one-way. This did work out in our favor, and they showed up Tuesday , after calling us for directions after having gotten lost. Thought movers might have GPS capability , or at least the benefit of Google Maps on their smartphones.The mover had us sign papers on the spot which they said just stated we'd received the contents. About a week later, my mom checked her credit card online and they charged her 65% more than the quote! Apparently, they had her credit card on file , and without any other communication as to additional charges, they charged her card. Beware!!! My elderly mother did not have copies of the estimate in print. I had spoken to Rachel over the phone and she'd given me the quote verbally that my mother took as what she'd owe. I can understand a few hundred dollars more, but not almost $1500 more! Since we did not have paper copies of our agreement, the credit card company could not pursue them. I absolutely would NOT recommend using Hildrup. read more

I chose Hilldrup Moving and Storage because of their accreditation with the BBB. You trust them with your entire house and you expect when you pay thousands of dollars that your home will safely be shipped to your next destination. DO NOT BE FOOLED. My bed was broken, my dresser was broken, my bathroom cabinet was broken and a figurine was broken but that's okay because we purchased the extra insurance for things like this--NOPE! They had someone come to our house and glue the problems back to together--not replace them. This bandaid is not what I paid an extra 1700 dollars for. The bathroom cabinet was destroyed beyond repair. It was bought just a year ago at around 150 dollars...because they waited soooo long to refund my money the item was just recently discounted to 68.00 so that is the price that they are willing to refund us for. Though when the claim was reported in DECEMBER it was still 150 dollars. It is now April 15. I am extremely unhappy with Hilldrup/United Moving Company. Your valuables will be broken and they could not care less about you. I have never posted a review on anything before but this is unbelievable. DO NOT hire them. read more
