I had a mixed experience with this shop and want to be fair in my assessment. On one hand the technical work was excellent. I brought my 2022 Honda Insight in for a fuel injector issue and the team handled the actual repair perfectly. The car is running smoothly again and the turnaround time was reasonable. If you are looking for quality mechanical work they clearly know what they are doing. However I am frustrated by the lack of guidance regarding warranty coverage. This car is still well within its 5 year or 60000 mile powertrain warranty and fuel injectors are typically covered under that or the emissions warranty. Since this was a major repair cost I wish the shop had recognized the warranty status and advised me to visit a dealership before proceeding with the out of pocket expense. I appreciate the good repair work but I would have valued a bit more professional transparency regarding my manufacturer coverage options. If you go here just make sure you have checked your own warranty status first. read more

A Disappointing Change in Service We've been living in this area for decades and have always heard great things about this local shop. Three years ago, we decided to give it a try. While the prices were high, the service was commendable, and we understood that everything in this area comes with a premium price tag. We continued to support them, especially during the pandemic, to help our local businesses. However, things took a turn for the worse two years ago when the front service/sales gentleman retired. His replacement, an ambitious yet crafty salesperson, has unfortunately led to a decline in our trust and satisfaction with the shop. Almost every time we went in for an oil change, we felt pressured into unnecessary and expensive services. For instance, this summer, we were quoted over $1200 for various services, including a fuel induction de-carbon service and a GDI intake service kit. Last summer, we replaced four brake pads and rotors at this shop. After less than 12,000 miles, our back pads were already worn down to under 0.008 inches. When we asked about the warranty (30,000 miles after installation pads and rotors), we were told that the issue was likely due to other parts such as the calipers. This excuse, coupled with the fact that these potential issues were not checked during the initial service, led us to question the integrity and technical capability of the shop. Furthermore, we noticed duplicated services listed on our quotes, leading to overcharges. For example: **OPcode BRK001** Estimate rear brakes "check brakes and advise remove all wheels, inspect front and rear brakes for wear, check rotors and drums for run out. check brake hardware, wheel cyclinders, emergency brake operation. Check master cyclinder operation and fluid level road test, hoses and calipers This was labor only 92.91 usd **Opcode MANM39** "replace rear brake pads and rotors remove wheels, check pads for even or uneven wear, check brake caliper operation, disk rotors for manufactures specifications, disc brake hardware refinish disc rotors within specifications, clean disk caliper slides. Install brake pads, rotors and calipers. install wheels torque to specification..." This was labor 268 and parts 1017 usd the BRK001 and MANM39 opcodes both included similar services, some of which are typically included for free during an oil change at other shops. Having said these, we've decided to take our business elsewhere. We write this review not out of spite, but to inform our fellow locals. It's disheartening to see a once reputable business tarnished by short-sighted sales tactics. We hope the owners, who we know to be honest businessmen, can rectify this situation and restore the shop's reputation. read more

Hillmuth agreed to look at my old vehicle, a 1966 Corvair Corsa, when other shops flat out refused to work on the vehicle. I requested wheel balancing all-around. I was aware that existing tires were old and communicated this to Richard. Hillmuth agreed to take a look anyway to see if it could be done. I appreciated it. It turned out that new tires were advisable, and Hillmuth mounted and balanced new tires. Perfectly done! I then asked if they could try a front end alignment. It can be difficult on a Corvair and other shops refused. I gave them specs from the Corvair shop manual and they did an excellent job. Really excellent. The Hillmuth Clarksville is in my neighborhood (walking distance). I received their coupon flyer frequently. I always send my Bimmers to dealer for maintenance. But this time I want to give my local business a shot for oil change. The general manager is very nice and professional to explain what other services will be included in this maintenance. Unfortunate the coupon is not for Bimmers. Maybe the cost is about the same (or maybe a little less?) compared to BMW dealer but it does save me a bunch of time just for oil change. My car is taken a very good care. No complaints! I also requested a quote for my other diesel engine one. The general manager called me back and explained to me the challenge and also suggested me another specialized auto shop or back to dealer. I like the honesty and that is worth my 5 stars! read more

My daughter brought in her 2006 Toyota Camry for an oil change and to replace her lost gas cap. These guys took one look at her and saw dollar signs. As she waited for her car to be completed she was never given an estimate on how much it would cost just told to wait for it. She was presented with a bill for $500+ dollars!! And sadly she paid it. She got the "We got a stupid little girl here!"Price. I have heard good things about this business in the past, but I can't believe how crooked they are to gouge a young woman for an oil change and a gas cap!! A max $10.00 part and a $40.00 max oil change! And they charged her 10X that!! Now they are sending me the service flyers (cars in my name) you get once they have your information. This is a busy shop. They were originally an import car specialist shop but can work on virtually any brand. The technicians are well trained, knowledgeable and do good work. Don't expect discount pricing as the shop spends the time and effort to get it right the first time. The dealers I've been to lately have not. The cost of car care from these guys are fair, considering they won't mess up your ride or leave you by the side of the road due to lack of care or knowhow. Rating is Good, with a 'But'. Used them once again after having experience with them some 30 yr ago. Had the car towed in due to overheating condition while on the road. Service was good, communication good, website good (left history and service instructions on it) but when it came to paying the bill, which had been given to me accurately as an estimate, I was still shocked, essentially for the labor charge. The hourly rate was not on the bill (not sure if it was displayed in the office) but the total for each of the two needed repairs (a coolant system fitting and thermostat ) was close to 1K. I will say they could have replaced the 1 yo coolant and could have charged me more but only charged for what apparently had been lost from the system. Also, there was necessarily some diagnostic time on it to diagnose the two factors that went into the repair and ensure correction. Bottom line, they are too far from home to be my regular repair facility but even if wasn't the case I likely wouldn't use them again; . They do appear to run a nice shop, well organized and all 5-6 bays were filled with vehicles with activity on them. They were able to immediately work on my unscheduled problem with quick turnaround. read more

I have been a customer of Hillmuth as long as I've been driving (17 long years ha ha) but they've always treated my family and I well and delivered excellent customer service as well as stellar mechanical work. My dad has brought his cars to this location before Hillmuth bought it from Ramos. He continues to take his car to Hillmuth because of their consistency, honesty, and efficiency. I moved to California and the last time I had my car serviced here was in 2009. Flash forward to 2014 when I moved home. My husband would do my oil changes and add air to my tires and he even attempted to change my brake pads. He's been busy at work and I thought I will just take my car down the street (see review about Brentwood Automotive). I decided to take my car back to the county (we currently live in Baltimore city) and was so happy I did. Mike and Terry both were so helpful, patient, and answered all questions I had. They didn't sound annoyed when I had no clue about my car and had to call and ask my husband. Sorry, I am old school I don't know much about cars nor do I want to so I appreciate straight shooters and not being taken advantage of by mechanics who just see an easy opportunity to upsell and charge me for things my car doesn't need. After the fiasco I experienced elsewhere I wanted to make sure my car was 'ok' and also was concerned about a nagging tire pressure light that kept blinking. They diagnosed the issue and we decided not to replace the sensor at this time. My husband took his car there and had some maintenance to catch up on. They always call and let you know exactly what needs to be done, what should be done, and you decide whether or not to proceed. They were open with us and we decided to go with about $ 1500 worth of work all of which seemed necessary and vital to extending the life of his vehicle. They also sent a technician to pick me up from my parents house when was car was ready. Such a nice service and a great staff. I can't say enough how wonderful it is to have a trusted automotive shop and I look forward to becoming a Howard County resident again and being closer to the good folks at Hilmuth. read more

I was in town from PA visiting a friend nearby and had some issues with a large plastic piece of the underside of my car dragging on the ground. My friend recommended dropping it off at Hillmuth. She says it is a great and trustworthy place that her family takes their cars to. It was after 7pm so I didn't expect them to be open but when I arrived, the garage door was open. Kevin greeted me with a smile and after explaining the issue, he offered to lift my car up and check it out. Then he proceeded to do a temporary fix for no charge to get me home safely. I was very pleased. They showed me the old parts they had replaced and explained what they should have looked like. They called me with an estimate prior to work, and when they were done, it turned out to be less than they originally quoted me! They even were able to pick me up and take me to the office so I could pick up my car. My problems were resolved and handled very professionally at a fair price. I had some noises coming from my rear brakes. I call the service adviser prior to scheduling an appointment as to the cause and he gave me reassuring advise. The brake sensor had broken off which would indicate a low brake pad requiring replacement before damage to the rotors. Even though the sensor was broken, the brakes were replaced before damage to the rotors. I found the service adviser trustworthy and was only charged for items needing replacement. read more

Its challenging finding a car mechanic who is honest. But we have been very impressed with Hilmuth Automotive. We were having a transmission problem with one of our cars and took it into Hilmuth. They inspected the car identified the problem and then called us to tell us they checked into it and this was something that was still covered under the car manufacturers warranty (which was expiring soon) and we should take the car there to have it serviced. This saved us several hundred dollars. I think most shops would have just fixed the problem and charged us. I commend Hilmuth for their honesty and integrity and they are our mechanics now for life. read more
