Below are the facts about my experience over the years with this company. PROS Super awesome texts, emails or print outs of all that is wrong, can be fixed, future problems with your vehicle. Great tool for customers. Super FAST service. Very friendly staff. Pricing for labor and parts is normal range for a shop their size, but parts after factory and Delco high. Although that can change dramatically. Wait time long if you stay-but YAY you get your car same day as promised. Some techs explain in detail others do not, but mainly front end dude will try to elaborate if his boss approves of your questions. CONS Fast service for some problems they have ID'd in your car can possibly mean the job was possibly hasty and you need to return to fix the problem again as it happened to me. Hey, could be I was one in a hundred but it happened, and I am not happy about using my extra time and resources. Talk at both ends of mouth - the customer wants to know if the problem is X or Y? Um. I dunno. Leave the shop with more questions than answers. Put customer on the fence with worry with sophmoric scare tactics for possible future problems with car. If you have more questions and probe about solutions to your auto troubles they will only be handled by the owner...which leads to phone tag frustration and this dude a great salesman. Started out my relationship with JH Automotive in Beltsville as a happy trusting customer and ended up not trusting them. Hence, I am giving them a very generous ONE STAR. Beep beep!! read more

I was referred to John Hook by my sister Jennifer who had taken her car there for A/C repairs in the past. I took my 2011 Nissan Xterra to John Hook Automotive this month, April of 2024, because it was making an annoying squeaking sound. I was worried because I thought that it might be due to the age of the car and a squeaky suspension and that I might just have to live with the noise. It turns out that the squeaking was due to brake issues. Needless to say, they took care of the problem. No more squeaking and so my car is quieter and safer I'm sure!! The way that the company communicates is fantastic, they're very kind and they even send great pictures of the problem to help explain. My son took my car for an oil change to this shop. They did a complete inspection (with report) and telling him the radiator is in need of replacement. We said, fine, do it. The next day, after they replaced the radiator, they came back telling us the engine is damaged and the car is completely dead. My son drove the car there and their initial inspection didn't mention any engine problem. During their repair work, they damage the engine and asking us to pay another several thousand to make it running again. Yes, my son is young, he trusted a professional to work on his car, that he is reply on to go to work. This auto shop dumped him right in the middle. This place is not responsible place. read more

He explained the problem at the level of my understanding, they drove me home while the car was being serviced and picked me up timely, and they returned the defective part. The price was affordable--the dealership's parts quote alone was way higher than what I paid today (and the dealership's quote did not even include the defective part that was replaced today). I chose John Hook Automotive based on the reviews he already had. I am so glad that I did! My vehicle with 278,000 miles needed some extensive front end repairs. I knew there were multiple things going wrong. John treated me politely, fairly and made sure that I knew each problem, why it was, what needed to be repaired and what it cost. They even drove me back to my apartment, since I couldn't catch a ride to the shop. My daughter, a student at University of Maryland, ran into an issue with a dead battery. Since I live a few hours away, I jumped on Yelp looking for a reliable car care provider. Even though they are located about 15 minutes from campus, and there are plenty of mechanics closer by, I got the feeling that this would be a good place, after reading the reviews & speaking with Kyle. After being unable to get an appointment for a tire patch at ntb and precision, I came here for a patch. John immediately saw me but the tire was irreparable. He called around and found a tire for me and tightened the bolts on my donut. He also told me that if I needed a deal on tires that i could call Him and he would walk me through tires to purchase on tire rack.com and they would put them on for me. I can not recommend this place enough. When I was a kid, my father always told me that one of the most important things to do when you start driving is to find a mechanic you can trust. I have never found a more reliable or trustworthy mechanic than John Hook. They are fair and honest and completely transparent. I recently dropped off my van for an an inspection, and even after I approved the work, they called me back because they had concerns with my engine and age of my car and didn't want me to sink money into my car unnecessarily. I actually started looking for a new mechanic on Yelp after a couple of huge fiascos with another local shop, and this place hasn't let me down. I needed a muffler replaced once, and not only was the price reasonable, they didn't try to suggestively sell anything and are always very prompt. I live 45 minutes away from John Hook Automotive, and I would rather take a day off of work to drive down to Beltsville than trust my vehicle to any other mechanic. And it's not even that other mechanics are bad, it's just that John Hook and his team are that good. They're trustworthy, quick and affordable. I recommend them to everyone I know. I just paid $132 to have my car towed from Annapolis to John Hook's after a break down. The car ended up having to be towed again to the College Park Honda Dealership because it was a problem with the key chip coding. I sort of kicked myself for not having it towed to my local dealership and saving the $132. But in the end (this always happens) I am so glad I brought it to John. I feel like I caused him extra work and headache, and I'm not sure he saw enough compensation for his time and efforts. But my original quote from Honda was twice what I ended up paying because John went to bat for me. So I saved $400 by paying $132 to tow it to Beltsville. read more

Years ago, I was working in DC and took my truck in to have its AC recharged at a chain. They determined that my compressor was faulty and need to be replaced to the tune of $1200. i know when someone's trying to take advantage of my non local plates and the fact that I'm a female, so I kindly refused and left w just a recharge. I found John Hook after reading some reviews, took my truck there and they gave me a repair the compressor estimate of 1/3 to 1/4 the cost. I scheduled the appt, waited while they did the work and years later all is still good. They were straightforward, knowledgeable, honest and affordable, though not "cheap" in that nickle and dime sort of way that I abhor. Well worth the search to find them! read more

I was really impressed with John and the team, I had a rattle at about 1000 RPM and it was driving me nuts...literally. So I took it to john, he said it would take some time to diagnose, so I brought it another day, John took about an hour to differentiate diagnose where the noise is coming from, he removes the alternator belt and re installs it to correct torque specs. And the noise seemed gone at the moment, I have been driving the car since then, and I don't have that rattle anymore. John is trustworthy, informative and a good mechanic. read more

Wow! This place is amazing! I had a strange sound coming from my vehicle and this place fixed it. My old mechanic didn't even want to look at it. Today was my first visit to John Hook Automotive, but I certainly will be returning in the future when I encounter more seemingly inevitable issues with my car. I had what I am sure most mechanics would consider a simple--if not the simplest--problem: my left headlight was burned out. As one completely uninformed on cars, I tend to want a professional to attend to any issue, be it small or large. Moreover, I had a question about my radiator--was worried my antifreeze (whatever that is!) was draining and that there might be a leak. John (the eponymous owner, I believe) inserted the light bulb in--no joke--five minutes and immediately checked my radiator/antifreeze. He told me there absolutely was not a problem whatsoever and that I was good to go. The only thing he charged me for was the light bulb itself--not a cent for any labor. And, in fact, the light bulb was cheaper there than it is at Autozone. He is friendly, informative, and from this experience alone I can tell he is entirely honest--which, I believe, is the best trait a mechanic can have. I will absolutely be returning here.
