The best part about Hillstone is the sushi. It's amazing. Probably the best thing on the menu. This location isn't as good as Houston down the street because they don't have that Woodfire grill and just the food just doesn't taste the same broccoli seems to always be overcooked or undercooked at this location they try to rush you a little bit so they can turn the tables over. They even have them manager swing by with the check and almost stand around waiting for you to pay overall it's good I would make a reservation. They don't have any outside seating. It's located in Bal Harbor shop, which is nice. read more

Had a reservation at Hillstone Bal Harbour and still ended up waiting over an hour for a table. What's the point of reserving if they clearly don't honor it? The hostess was incredibly rude and dismissive--no explanation, no apology, just attitude. We waited at the bar, hoping things would turn around, only to be served overpriced, watered-down drinks. After all that time and money spent, we were finally told they were unable to accommodate us. Are you kidding? Completely unprofessional from start to finish. Started out with a refreshing Jackrabbit, which was tasty. I ordered the shrimp Louie salad. Cold and perfect size for lunch. The service was friendly and fast. We sat inside since it was so hot outdoors. They do have outdoor seating, which I bet is lovely during cooler weather. read more

I'm not exaggerating when I say this is arguably the best restaurant in Miami. The service was incredible. The food was phenomenal. And the ambience is stellar. Was visiting Bal Harbour shops and stumbled upon this location of Hillstone (I'd only ever been to the Coral Gables location). Decided we had to go eat after some shopping. Not only was the food deliciously prepared, but it was filling and fresh. I ordered the veggie burger -- it was HUGE, and served on a delicious brioche bread with fresh beets and other veggies. The tres leches Who is possibly the best I've ever had. It was fresh and PERFECTLY moist. It seriously tasted like the chef had just prepared for us. To end the night, we enjoyed a phenomenal ice cream sundae that was topped with candied nuts. I could go on...but yes. What a great experience! Definitely coming back soon. My husband and started a tradition of going to Hillstone every New Year's Eve when we got married 5 years ago because this is where we had our first date nearly 10 years ago. We normally visit the location in Coral Gables, but this year we decided to go to the Bal Harbor one since I'm pregnant and it's closer to our place. This was a special New Year's Eve. The food at this location was just ok. Not nearly as good as the other one. I started to get sick mid meal, so we decided to take our dessert, the tres leches, to go. Being pregnant I've been looking forward to this dessert for a while so I was ready to dig in. As my husband and I took our bites, there were crunchy bits in it. We both spit it out to find egg shells in the cake. So disgusting. I've never had this happen in coral gables. Since we were already home and it was nearly midnight, we couldn't let the restaurant know. I'm disappointed, upset, and grossed out about this. For the price of the meal to be so mid, and for the dessert to be overlooked and mishandled like this, is just super disappointing. I was here for the first time today as I was being more aware of my surroundings at the bal harbor mall that is outdoors. This place is a gem. I never have had ribs that were so amazing. I wasnt paying that much attention to when they asked me what scauces I want...I think I zoned out. But either way it was good and I enjoyed myself...seasoned with just the right amount of bbq ...it was like eating a piece of cake. Heaven on a plate .. I love the Hillstone restaurant group, so we were very excited about eating at Hillstone in Bal Harbour......until we got there. Long waiting times, no gratitude towards loyal customers, they expect you to wait despite having a reservation 10-up to 40min because they take late walk ins or overbook, they scrutinize your clothing (no flip floos, no hats, no glasses even prescription but yet the bar is full of caps and flip flops barely 10 meters from the tables!!) they give away your table the first chance they have, they dump the dishes anywhere on the table regardless of who ordered them, they walk around checking clothing and scolding you like schoolchildren to reinforce their 'formal dress code' nothing is formal in that place even less the service. There is a time and place and manner to address a dress code. They adhere to stiff rules without using their good judgment, rules that serve them but ultimately render the experience a rather frustrating one for the customers. We have been going there for 10 years now and never had one issue, in the past month i have been reaching out to customer service to express my dissatisfaction only to be sent a nasty email telling me to take my business elsewhere. Which I will gladly do. Even guest services were rude there was No reaching out whatsoever to understand in what way my experience was disappointing. I was accused and blamed of being disrespectful and totally discredited. If I were them and had the least bit of business acumen, I would want to know why there are countless 1 star reviews online posted by many disgruntled customers, reviews that highlight exactly that, the staff's rude disrespectful ungrateful behaviour. The good: Food was delicious, we had a few appetizers and no one was disappointed. The artichoke dip was amazing. Wouldn't recommend the sushi app, although it was delicious the portion was tiny, you would need to order a few of them if you have a big group. The bad: felt like they were trying to hard to be an upscale place, nothing about the ambiance felt upscale, but yet they have a certain dress code they want you to abide by which is ridiculous, it's Miami, let people dress how they want to dress. The bartender seemed way off when we sat at the bar waiting for our table to be ready, the guy have me sometime else's beer and screwed up my other friend's drink. Whatever, mistakes happen, not a big deal overall. I am myself probably the biggest Hillstone fan I know, but this location managed to be the most underwhelming that my spouse and I have ever encountered. The food quality was ok, but somehow wasn't quite up to par with what we have experienced in LA, Dallas, and NYC. But what really made it horrible was the atmosphere. It was excruciatingly loud, mostly as a result of roughly 30% of the patrons completely ignoring the Hillstone website's advice and bringing their toddlers and small children in tow to the restaurant. We visited on a Sunday afternoon which probably contributed to this, but why is it that only people in Miami seem to totally disregard that young children aren't really all that welcome at Hillstone restaurants? Service was good otherwise, but we won't be back. Do yourself a favor and head downstairs to Carpaccio Restaurant instead. The food is really good here. It's done right. There is nothing unique about the food but the burgers were cooked and seasoned well. The fries are way too skinny but they grow on you. The fudge sundae is really good. The ice cream holds its form and doesn't melt fast. You can really taste the vanilla. There are candied pecans on top and whipped cream. I LOVE Hillstone Restaurant! Have visited multiple times and keep coming back! The Caesar Salad is the best I have ever had in my life and the Ding's Crispy Chicken sandwich is to die for. The Pan-Roasted Salmon is melt in your mouth delicious and the Spinach & Artichoke Dip is excellent and is served with a salsa the surprisingly pairs very well with it. Bread is not complimentary at Hillstone but they do offer a Warm Bread Plate on the appetizers menu that is very good although rather small. They are currently adding sushi to the menu and the Thai Tuna Roll had the unexpected element of peanuts which I can't say I've ever had in a sushi roll before. For drinks I recommend the Crisp Martini which is light and refreshing. Highly recommend this place the atmosphere, service and food are top tier every time! read more

The food was so good. I don't know what kind of wizardry they use in their kitchen, but everything was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. Atmosphere and decor are top notch. Lousy example but for example if you go to a chain like Mickey D's it doesn't matter if you're in Dallas or Detroit-- consistent. Even though we were in FL we got the same organic Artichoke from Castroville that we get at Los Altos Grill. This is your neighborhood "go to" eatery. I never get tired of it. My 100th Visit!! Hillstone Corp runs Houston's and some other establishments around the U.S. including Rutherford Grill in Napa Valley, Hillstone in the Gables, many other venues including Aspen, some using different names, but many with very similar menus, in some cases 80% or more the same. So when I say 100 visits, that includes many visits to Houston's North Miami and also some other locations around the US. One of the most scenic I have been to is in Winter Park, near Orlando and Disney. It sits on a lake with a huge beautiful property and wooden dock. Pompano Beach Houston's offers an Intracoastal setting. Highlights: CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY, CONSISTENCY. Did I say consistency? Yes, this is American comfort food, steaks, simple seafood, great salads, burgers but everything executed perfectly with amazing attention to detail and servers are trained almost as well as those who work in Michelin Starred restaurants. My intel tells me the training manual is the size of a phonebook, most don't make the cut, only the best who are dedicated to excellent customer service work here. Nods to Roman, Sara, Victoria to name a few great employees we have met. WINE: Wine bottle prices are the best in Florida hands down. Most restaurants mark up their wine more than two times their cost. Hillstone has a policy of charging fair wine prices. Example, Louis Roederer Brut Champagne $62. That's Champange, REAL French Champagne, not Prosecco, a full 750 ml bottle for $62! Most restaurants in South Florida charge DOUBLE that price. Many other examples. That's a Hillstone policy nationwide. DRINK MORE WINE! THANK YOU HILLSTONE!! Recommended Dishes: The Grilled Artichokes (IF YOUR ARE LUCKY). Why lucky, because they only have them a few months of the year. They come from a special farm in Castroville, CA, solely dedicated to Hillstone, and you will never have better artichokes, anywhere. Caesar Salad. The Caesar Salad served at Thomas Keller's Surf Club gives you a better table side show but this one is actually better IMHO! Emerald Kale Salad. That sounds like boring health food, right? Not this one, it will blow you away. You can have it with Rotisserie Chicken or if you're having something else as a main course get it as a side, you will not be disappointed. Shrimp Cocktail. I am mad about this being taken off the menu, I hope it comes back because it is the best Shrimp Cocktail. Hillstone why did you take this away? I would cry but I can go to Houston's to get my Shrimp Cocktail, at least it's close by. The Beef Ribs. OK, if you order nothing else, even if you're not crazy about ribs, order these. They are made with a mustard barbecue sauce, they are off the charts. The Dover Sole is good, they only have it on weekends and limited supply so they run out, come early if you want that. The Salmon is good, but it won't make you cry with joy like the Beef Ribs, well if you're a pescatarian that will have to do or get the Seared Ahi Tuna Salad, also a good lunch item. Whether you do prime steaks, burgers, salads, meat or seafood. you will not be disappointed, but do try my recommendations because I have had just about everything on the menu over the years. If you've read this far you get a bonus. I'm going to tell you some little known information about Hillstone and a secret off the menu dish that is one of the best things you will ever have but it's not always available. First for the history. This is a family owned private business. A lot of other chains are public companies. Public companies have to answer to shareholders who demand increased earnings every quarter, so they are always looking to cut corners to improve the bottom line. Hillstone doesn't have that dilemma. They started the business with the idea that if you focused on all the little details, hired and trained the best, created the best recipes and stuck with them, you will be successful. I will give you an example of the little know details. Did you ever go into a restaurant and the table wobbles. You have to flag down a waiter, eventually he or she comes over, finds something to put under the leg of the table to keep it from wobbling, goes away, then it starts wobbling again. Ever happen to you? This will never happen at any Hillstone restaurant nationwide. Why? Because every single table and both is bolted to the ground. They cannot ever move. Just one little detail of hundreds. Your water or wine glass will never go unfilled. Every service person is watching your table, they work as a team, glances rarely go unnoticed. You've taken the time to read this far so I will give you the reward. The secret off the menu dish is...don't tell anyone..Crab Cakes. They are no ordinary crab cakes. You will never, ever, have crab cakes like these. They are 99.5% crab. There is no filler. While shopping Bal harbour with my wife and two small girls we popped into Hillstone to have lunch - Upon entering the restaurant we were informed that our stroller would not be allowed inside & oh yeah we also don't have high chairs! So what they really are saying is that our rather empty restaurant has a no children policy. To top it off the host staff was rude and condescending. Always surprises me that people who work in high-end retail and high-end restaurants think that they are doing a favor by serving the customers. Super disappointing experience... went for our anniversary been going to hillstone for years since my nyc days.. but this time was just so sad. Manger on duty was super condescending and went off on my boyfriend when not notifying the server of his celery allergy when we ordered deviled eggs.. I have never in my life had deviled eggs with celery.. horrible. Said it's not their issue it says on the mention that it's "our duty" to notify server sooo rude. Then proceeded to yank things from out table throughout the evening without saying a word and server said that it was in caution of allergy ‍ just insane. Zero hospitality or people skills.
