This was our last time eating at Hillstone. It's no wonder I'm seeing so many negative reviews lately. At 6:00 p.m., they were already out of two fish dishes. On top of that, they refuse to make even the slightest accommodation or deviation from the menu--none whatsoever. The food used to be very good here, but that's no longer the case. And whatever you do, don't order the crab cakes. While they contained very little filler, they had absolutely no seasoning and were completely tasteless. Save your money and go elsewhere. read more

I have eaten at restaurants all over Miami and beyond. High-end restaurants, neighborhood favorites, hotel dining rooms, industry events, openings, and everything in between. In all those years, I have never experienced anything remotely close to what happened here. My friend and I were seated in a booth. We ordered drinks and were preparing to order dinner. At one point, I handed my friend my phone to show him an Instagram video. Not a phone call. Not FaceTime. Not a conversation on speaker. An Instagram video. Before I could even hear the audio myself from across the table, a server who was not even assigned to us appeared and sharply informed us: "No speaker or FaceTime here". The tone was what made it memorable. Not polite. Not professional. Not friendly. The tone you use when somebody has already done something wrong. My friend and I just looked at each other in complete disbelief. We genuinely did not know what had just happened. What made it even stranger was the environment itself. This was not a quiet dining room where a pin could drop. The restaurant was buzzing with conversations, energy, and noise from every direction. In fact, I could barely hear the audio from the video myself. Yet somehow, in less than a second, we found ourselves being corrected by a server who was not even taking care of our table. At that moment, the meal was over before it started. To be clear, our actual server was kind and professional. When I told her we were leaving, she offered to get a manager. I declined. Some experiences are so bizarre that you decide to leave. I paid roughly eleven dollars for a Coke and a sparkling water and walked out. What makes this whole situation such a shame is that the restaurant itself is beautiful. The atmosphere is attractive. I have also heard good things about the food. We were fully prepared to stay, order dinner, and enjoy the evening. Instead, one unnecessary interaction completely changed the experience. A restaurant can have whatever policies it wants. That is not the issue. The issue is how those policies are enforced and how guests are made to feel in the process. Unfortunately, what should have been a pleasant dinner became one of the strangest and most off-putting restaurant experiences I have ever had. And yes, when friends, followers, or anyone asks about Hillstone, this will be the story I remember telling. read more

Our waitress was pleasant and accommodating. Nice atmosphere surrounded by exclusive stores. The restaurant is small so your wait time can be 2 hours long. As a big fan of Houston's and hillstone I'm always excited to dine at one of their many locations. The bal harbour location is one of my favorites. Easy parking, quiet and great food. Last time I dined there I had the shrimp Louie salad and a side of fries. Both items were delicious and I left satisfied. I am such a fan of all the Hillstone restaurants and this location is no exception. It is on the smaller side, which adds to the intimate feel. The food is all excellent. We, of course, shared the spinach artichoke dip to start and our server anticipated our request and brought out additional chips and salsa for the table. I then enjoyed the kale salad with the yellowtail which was incredible. The fries with the special fry seasoning were fresh and crispy and paired well with the spicy aioli. My boyfriend loved his crispy chicken sandwich, which he orders every time we go to a Hillstone restaurant. The only not positive thing I have to share is that somehow there was a hair buried in our salt shaker, like mixed in with the salt. The food is always good, but last week I went with my sisters who were in town with their kids, we were 7 people in total, 4 adults and 3 kids under the age of 10. It was a Thursday afternoon around 3:30pm, which meant the restaurant had very few people still eating. With more than 80% of tables free, I asked for a table and the hostess girl (an 18 year old kid herself) said they could not accommodate 7 people in any table, which was, you know, not true since they do have bigger tables. I explained that regardless, we had small kids, one of them being 5. She called her (adult) manager to handle such a difficul situation (yes, sarcasm). The manager came and was furious at such an crazy request... But wait, it gets better, her precise words were (I almost burst out laughing when I heard): "you guys can have 2 separate tables, but the kids cannot come and sit with you". Then back to the kid hostess. She kept repeating the same words, like teens do when they are fed up with their parents? She was soooooooo rude that 2 things happened: we literally walked 5 steps to the left and had a great meal at the Argentinian restaurant which is right there, and the couple who was behind us, also wanting a table also decided not to sit after hearing how the hostess treated patrons. And their words were: "ay no mi amor, aqui no, que pereza de hablar con esta niña". Guys, wake up and train your staff, this is Miami and there are 6482920 other options where this kind of thing doesn't happen... read more

Not too much to say here. My friends were super excited to go to Hillstone as they go regularly where they live in Houston. We found out that this location is considered a "boutique" location. The menu was different and even tho there is a full bar, you could pretty much only get what was on the menu. I learned that by ordering an espresso martini. Our server said that no one could make it good so they scrapped it from the menu. Her words. Also, several menu items that we ordered from the menu were not available. Had it not been such a far ride, we would have elected to go elsewhere. I settled on the salmon which was just ok. I probably wouldn't run to get back here at all. read more

This location is fun especially if you like to watch the wealthy Miami patrons- the cars below in the valet parking are amazing! The food at the Hillstone restaurants is always good! Had no idea there was a millstone at the bal harbor shops! I was a big fan of the one in the gables, so we decided to eat here. Very clean inside, we didn't have a reservation, they told us there would be a 20 minute wait but they took us before. They may have been understaffed, because there were open tables and they weren't sitting us. we had to point out the empty table to the hostess. that part was annoying. but the food was delicious and made up for it! our waitress was very kind. she helped answer all our questions and helped us select our meal. In the end we ordered: cashew and kale salad- crunchy, refreshing, asian tasting salad with cashew, onion, kale and a delicious dressing shrimp and coconut sushi roll- huge slices but filled with big shrimp and a wave of coconut taste hits you at the last second with all the coconut flakes. get a side of their spicy mayo to dip Ding's crispy chicken sandwich- i have been waiting to try this! the chicken was so juicy, not too oily. paired with a delicious slaw, tomato, cheese and a buttery soft brioche bun. it was hugeeee (three big pieces). came with shoestring fries that were just okay. read more

We had dinner reservations last evening at Hillstone at Bal Harbor. We did early shopping and were hungry. We drove up to the valet service rather than spending time looking for a parking spot in the garage on a busy Saturday. The ambiance is upscale casual in a modern glass and wood decor on the second floor. I liked the glass elevator overlooking the Bal Harbor mall with the waterfalls and foliage. We looked at the menu but didn't see very much that appealed to us. It seemed to be more sushi and fish items. Near the bottom of the menu, we saw French Dip Au Jus with fries, and we both ordered it. It was good but not outstanding. Our server was Joseph, and he was friendly and attentive. Our water glasses were not kept full, and we had to ask for water refills. The prices were high but the quality didn't match. Hillstone is part of the Houston restaurant chain, and some of their food items are similar. We always enjoy Houston's. This was our first time at a Hillstone restaurant. Would we come back? Terrible experience at Hillstone. We came in for a relaxed lunch expecting a high level of service, but what happened was truly shocking. To be clear, the issue was not the food--we didn't even get a chance to eat. After we were already seated and our waitress clearly saw that we were a party of five, including a toddler, our food had already been served when management approached us. In the middle of the meal, three managers--Luther, Alex, and Cindy--came over in a very unprofessional and disrespectful manner and demanded that we leave the restaurant immediately. There was no proper explanation and no effort to handle the situation respectfully. This was especially upsetting given that we were with a hungry toddler who was waiting to eat. Being forced to leave under those circumstances, after the food had already been served, is beyond unacceptable. We dine at high-end restaurants regularly and have never experienced anything even remotely like this. Being asked to get up and leave mid-meal, without cause, is simply disgraceful. This was one of the worst dining experiences we've ever had. We will not be returning and would not recommend this place to others. read more

Dear Hillstine Management, I'm writing to share my disappointment with our recent visit to Hillstine for a relaxing dinner and a birthday celebration, which unfortunately turned into a very unpleasant experience. From the beginning, we had an issue with the sun shining directly into our faces. We asked if we could either close the blinds or move to another table. The manager on duty, whose name I believe was Hanna, was extremely unhelpful and dismissive. She gave us a hard time about closing the blinds and refused to move us, even though there were clearly empty seats available. To make things worse, most of the blinds were broken. When we tried to escalate the concern, the general manager, Avery Colgan, didn't seem to care about what we had to say. Overall, the experience felt unprofessional and disrespectful--especially disappointing for what was supposed to be a special celebration. I would appreciate it if someone higher up in management could contact me directly to discuss this matter further. I hope you take this feedback seriously so that other customers don't have to go through a similar experience. read more

It never fails, as many times as I come to bal harbour and give this place a chance I always regret wasting a night of dinner here. The staff is always SO RUDE and of all the places to eat at in the mall, this is by far the least family friendly restaurant of them all. No kids menu, Burger was good which is the only reason for the extra star, otherwise i would have rated them a 1 star. I've been a loyal Hillstone customer for years and have visited many of their locations. The food, service, and ambiance are consistently excellent everywhere--except the Bal Harbour location. After waiting nearly two hours to be seated, the food was great as always, but the menu felt limited compared to other Hillstones. No Hawaiian ribeye, no spinach dip, and fewer options overall. The biggest issue was the service. We had to repeatedly remind our server about simple requests like extra sides. We had to flag someone down multiple times just to get water or ice. Every time we asked for something, it was either forgotten or never brought at all. It felt like we were being ignored. Hillstone is usually flawless, which made this experience especially disappointing. I hope the Bal Harbour location can improve its service to match the high standards the brand is known for. read more

This is the place to go if you and your children want to be treated like second class citizens. Rudest staff I've ever experienced. They asked me to leave when my one year old was making some noise. They called him a "distraction" to the other diners and asked me to leave. Not my husband, just me and the baby. The reason he was making noise was because first of all he's 1. And furthermore, they don't have high chairs, so he was sitting in my lap, waiting for food that took forever to come out. Awful experience from top to bottom. Management thinks they're running the French Laundry. It's just a hillstone guys, ctfo. They robbed their own waitress out of a bigger ticket because they think it's acceptable to treat mothers like garbage and call babies a distraction. read more

It's located within the beautiful Bal Harbour shopping mall. The location itself is one of the smallest Hillstone I have been to. Even the bar is super tinny, you can't even get a drink there. Service is one of the main reasons of the shortfall here and that's the reason I'm striking a star off. I ordered the crispy chicken sandwich which comes cut into 3 pieces, and my friend ordered the ribs. I traded one part of my sandwich for some of his ribs. The ribs were my favorite. They were phenomenal. Great taste and very tender. The ambiance can sometimes be loud. We ended up moving tables because the guy next to us was loud on his cell phone, but the staff were very accommodating and happy to seat us a little further away from the loud mouth. read more

She asked us for our drink orders and she filled our water glasses. Off to a good start! We ordered the Spicy Carrot and Avocado Roll, Warm Bread Plate, Caesar Salad, and Veggie Burger with Fries. We asked the server to course it out. We asked for the roll with no cilantro and she said they couldn't do that. She came back later and said they could leave off the cilantro. The salad and bread came out and the "sushi," just a minute or two later, so not really coursed out. All the food was just ok. Nothing bad, nothing special. Nothing that made us want to come back. Service was adequate, but nothing special. Everything was dropped off by random people. Sat for a bit with empty water glasses. The bread course was kind of odd. It was more like a fancy Texas toast with warm butter, olive oil, olives (pitted and unpitted), and herbs. I honestly would have liked some explanation from the server on how to eat this dish. I've never had bread service like this. There were 3 pieces of bread and we only ate 2 pieces. which never happens. The salad was our favorite of the dishes we ordered. Overall, nothing was bad, but nothing was really good. Meh. read more
