Food was pretty good. I split the rueben and the salmon sandwich. Both were great. The pasta salad was good too, needed some salt. They pull off the English pub vibe very well too. Our server was great and fast, it just seemed like they were a bit understaffed while we were there, so we had to wait a while for things. Had a great time out on the back patio! Service was excellent, I got the urban family sour but the tap blew about 3/4 into pouring so they gave it to me free of charge. Started with the tortilla soup that's hearty with a good spice from the beef and chorizo combo. Then there was the Soba Noodle Salad. It hit the spot with its cool noodles, fresh veg, and honey habanero pork that had just enough heat. Mahi mahi tacos are my favorite. Servers are great at splitting plates if you want to share. The taco plate is pretty big!

Great like their sister restaurant, the 74th Street Ale House on Greenwood, which is an absolute favorite of ours. Casual pub with friendly service and good food and drinks, and with a slightly expanded menu from 74th. I really enjoyed my mahi mahi tacos on my visit and have my eye on that hummus plate in the near future. They also had some interesting drink specials. Very happy a friend is opening a shop on QA so that now we can add Hilltop to our regular rotation as well. read more

A day trip to Seattle found us here before we headed back down to PDX. It was an off-time: about 2:45pm on a Tuesday. Hilltop was empty except for me and the Significant Other and maybe 3 or 4 other patrons. I ordered the Tuna Melt with pasta salad and the S.O. ordered the Red Reuben with pasta salad. We really liked our meals. So much so that I forgot to snap pictures. Oy. Our only complaint was that the pasta salad portion was really meager and had too much bell pepper. We've been coming to Hilltop Ale House frequently for the past 4 years. Recently, we brought our friend and autistic brother there and the server was kind of nasty towards us. Being autistic, my brother struggles with social interactions and when the server was speaking to him, he ended up saying "what is wrong with you!?" in a very condescending manner. Cool little bar/restaurant in Upper Queen Anne away from all the tourist attractions/hyped up eateries. I was a tourist but this place was recommended by my local friend so we met up there for dinner. It was a nice change of pace from other places I was visiting on my trip. You can tell they have "regulars" and it's really no surprise...the restaurant is a quiet, home-like feel- perfect to catch up with someone. They have a good tap list of local beers and American/bar food menu. I ordered the baked goat cheese salad. It was pretty tasty! I'm a huge fan of goat cheese so baked was interesting and very delicious. The dish was large as well. The waitress was very attentive for refilling our drinks. I would love to be able to give 5 stars. I love the food, drinks, atmosphere. Food is actually incredible. It's my kind of spot. Only problem so far is service. Last 3 times we've gone, our order has been incorrect. Food usually takes a long time to come out, but I'm not a stickler about that. Last time we went in, the bartender/server was a bit rude to my wife. That was enough for me to decide to not come back. Each time this has happened it's been the same server. Bummer because I loved the place, but my wife prefers other spots. I always give her the nudge to give them one more chance. The staff giving her attitude for literally no reason is lame. Honestly, I'm surprised the asian bartender lady hasn't been fired before this point - and I'm only calling out her race just so that we can all be specific here. The other bartenders and staff are fantastic. I say this as my husband and I have frequented Hilltop many times, have been perfectly pleasant, and she has been surly to us and to other customers during every experience. Tonight, I order a caesar salad with blackened chicken, no croutons due to dietary restrictions. The bartender makes careful note of my requests, but I end up receiving a caesar salad with blackened chicken including croutons. Obviously I understand that this is a fault of the kitchen, not her. I ask this bartender for a separate plate to leave the picked out croutons. She brings over a small plate and apologizes for the kitchen, and suggests that they remake the salad. I politely tell her "No need!", I have no problem with picking out the croutons myself within my salad. So, for any human who has eaten a salad before, you can understand that you come across things as you eat a salad. You can probably imagine that I'm coming across more and more croutons as I eat my salad. Suddenly, as I'm halfway through my salad, the bartender comes over and snatches up my small plate with croutons, without asking or saying a word to me. Why would she do this? She must understand that I'm gradually picking out the croutons that I just told her about 8 minutes ago, right? When she makes her way towards my end of the bar again, I point this out to her. Constructive criticism, right? Nope! She takes immediate defense, and then becomes a broken record as she repeats "I asked you if they should remake your salad! I asked you if they should remake your salad!" Um, I don't need to waste my entire salad and have them remake it based on croutons. I just need you to understand that taking my plate away without asking WHILE I'M EATING is kind of not okay? She gets more upset and accuses me of being condescending. Here's where the wild part starts - My husband comes back from the restroom, and I begin to talk to him directly about how she started this whole thing over taking away my small plate with croutons. Then, she starts shouting at me and repeats several times, "Don't talk about me to your husband!" Um, what?!?! You are trying to dictate what I can talk to my husband about? Then she proclaims, "I will cover your bill, just get out of here!" Um, I mean okay - I guess if you want to cover our drinks and our dinner, please go ahead and do that?! LOL. The worst part is that I just feel bad for the Hilltop owners. They must have no idea that this bartender is pretty much giving away food and drinks for anyone that gets in the way of her ego. read more

Good but inconsistent food with consistently bad service. It's not entirely the fault of the servers, there's typically just one tending bar and dealing with the whole front of house. Still, we usually feel like we're a bother. Some locals like that feeling of familiarity that breeds contempt. I don't. We eat out about 5 times a week and most of the places we frequent on Queen Anne know my name, they know the drink I want, etc.... I'm not asking for that. Im just asking for the same service I'd get at any run of the mill restaurant. We have 2 particular favorites from here, so once every couple of weeks we pop in and brave the bad service to get them Not anymore. Today we were charged for their error. I stopped in early in a Saturday evening! The staff were super accommodating and the atmosphere was wonderful. Its clear there are quite a few regulars who were present and were very friendly! I had a Reubens Crikey IPA and the special of the day: chicken gnocchi in a cream sauce with Parmesan! I really enjoyed visiting hilltop ale house, I ordered online and went in to pick up my order. The inside was fun and clean. The pickup process was simple and easy I was able to get in and out quickly with my order. The pulled pork sandwich tasted great reminded me of the home cooked pulled pork my mom used to make. The Reuben was good as well. My only suggestion, is to try and divide the chips from your sandwich. The juices from the pulled pork soaked into a few of the chips making them a little soggy. read more

What a nice low-key dive in the heart of Queen Anne! My friend and I had an early dinner across the street but had such bad service and were rushed at the end so much so that we felt the need to continue our night on this side of the street. Thankfully they have a back patio (you wouldn't know it unless you ask!) Unfortunately there are no heaters out back. I'll always like these alehouses--there are three in the chain. They all work the same faux-British feel, and they really make it work. Here's the rundown, which applies to the other locations just as much as Hilltop (they're very consistently well-run): Pros: Neighborhood place. Very local and connected to its regulars. Friendly, homey vibe, from the bistro seating out front all the way to the nice staff inside and clean restrooms in back Plenty of flat screens tuned to the game They show all different stuff, not just the big American pro sports Longish bar, plenty of table seating. They expect people for food, beer, or usually both They play good music (especially if you're over 30) No deep fryer on premises Decent beer lineup, proper glassware, clean lines Cons: No big demerits, but a couple things that are less interesting than the competition-- Beer list is old-fashioned. This is a draw for some people, but if you chase crazy hoppy or sour stuff, these guys skew away from that and toward classic, malty beers with a focus on UK breweries and British styles. Plenty of local kegs though Food is not super ambitious. Soups, salads, sandwiches. Well-executed every time, never disappoints, but never memorable These guys have very successfully supported the beer industry in this town for longer than some of today's brewers have even been alive. There were half a dozen breweries in Seattle when these guys opened their doors, and they always bought kegs and served good pints. The quesadilla was grilled and filled with chicken, Monterey Jack cheese and cilantro pesto,and served with a small greens salad tossed in a chipotle vinaigrette. The salad was light, and not over dressed. The quesadilla was crunchy and had just the right amount of bite. Hilltop is a staple on Queen Anne - we've been coming here for years. I have a few favorites (the tuna melt or the rueben with one of the pilsners they have on tap), but the weekly specials have been fantastic too. Had the pork tacos yesterday (for Taco wednesday) , but it was a tough call between the tacos and the meatloaf sandwich. I'll be back for the meatloaf. They recently added a back garden deck - a great spot to enjoy the weather. We try to grab one of the tables on the front patio when we prefer to people watch. read more
