I'd like to address the hamburger I had today. One of the best I've ever had. Served on more of a roll than a bun, the lean beef burger came with Pepperjack cheese, center cut bacon, green peppers and onions accompanied by a special house mustard sauce. Typically I'm that guy who pulls everything off my burger and redesigns it the way I like it and then add ketchup and mustard. Ate this as is and loved it. Good service here too. What a perfect neighborhood joint. Every single time I've visited, everything from the service to the clientele to the tap list to the food has been just great. I love the outdoor seating in both the front and back of the establishment. The front provides a great opportunity to appreciate some very cute pups being walked - and ideally given a treat from the pet shop next door - and the back is cozy and quiet with some nice coverage should Seattle weather be Seattle weathering. I have been a resident of Queen Anne for 32 years and a local restaurant owner. I walked into this restaurant on Wednesday night at 9pm when the place was closing. I was starving, and did not realize places close so early~my bad. There was no one behind the bar, or on the floor. Apparently, the waitress was sitting in the back eating, so I was unable to ask her if there was a possibility of getting something to go. The cook was starting to break down the kitchen and asked him if he would be willing to throw something into a to-go box for me. He happily said YES! What a kind and wonderful man! Then, the cranky server comes out and sarcastically said. "You should have talked to ME! I've already turned away 4 people." Well....I would have asked you had you been in the front of the restaurant taking care of your customers rather than stuffing your face in the back. Chastising a hungry patron rather than using some grace and class may result in a better review. Needless to say, I have zero interest in going to a place where the idea of HOSPITALITY has gone completely down the drain. You may consider getting into another line of work there sister. You SUCK at the people business. I understand there's a shortage of restaurant workers stressing out those that are currently on staff. However....there is no reason to be so surly and certainly RUDE. Keep it up and you'll have NO ONE coming through that front door. read more

I just moved to Seattle yesterday. This was the first place I tried for food and drink since it was a 4 min drive from my place. I walked in and was immediately warmly greeted. There were a few regulars it seemed. I took a seat at the bar and quickly started making conversation with them. I got 2 20oz pints of very good local beer and I ordered the buffalo chicken tenders on happy hour. Price, service and atmosphere were all excellent. Came in here on a rainy Saturday; was immediately met with friendly bar staff and a welcoming atmosphere. My husband had the chicken sandwich and I had the gumbo and goat cheese salad combo. We also got the black raven scotch ale and the boundary bay IPA. The IPA was phenomenal, but we expect that from boundary bay! The scotch ale was ok. What was a bit annoying was the $6.50 price tag; but it was a nice establishment, so we semi-understood. The chicken sandwich was solid, well done meal. The cream cheese was a nice touch and the accompanying pasta salad was delicious. The star was really my dish. The gumbo was actually spicy and super flavorful and interesting. The salad was a run of the mill salad expect for the amazing croutons and FRIED GOAT CHEESE. Whattttt? I've never had that before and it was spectacular. Made a common salad garnish into an interesting and sophisticated idea. The servers were kind and attentive. And while I wasn't disappointed, I found myself questioning whether I could really say whether this was the best or not. It was great, and it made me happy for sure. Best in the city? Went to the Hilltop Ale House with Ron M. wayyyy back earlier this year and had a really great meal here! The food was awesome. We went with the fish tacos (tasty!), cilantro pesto chicken quesadilla (EASILY my favorite thing we got, so good!), and some of their roasted garlic and herb bread (nom nom). This was enough food to feed an army! Ended up with plenty of leftovers, which is always totally awesome. They have specials that rotate every week, which is pretty cool. The staff was really friendly. They also have plenty of TVs to watch whatever sporting event happens to be going on at the time. Prices are reasonable and the location on Queen Anne Ave is perfect. Great drinking establishment that serves one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had! I totally agree with Laura S. that it is a destination dish! Their menu describes it as: "Lightly breaded, boneless breast of chicken, seared in garlic olive oil, then topped with Mozzarella cheese and baked in the oven. Served on toasted rye bread with cream cheese, sliced tomatoes, sliced red onions, mayo and lettuce." It's also a very good deal for $10.95. Get it with a side tabouli instead of potato chips. The gumbo, blackened salmon sandwich and pesto chicken quesadilla are damn fine too! They have an array of great beers on tap and are served in true Imperial pint glasses. These are 20 oz glasses that are the standard you would find in your typical English pub. US pint glasses are 16 oz. The obvious difference other than size is highlighted by the bulbous bulge near the top of the Imperial pint. I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember this place used to house Queen Anne hobby way back when. UPDATE: 07/25/07 Had a late dinner here after catching a sneak preview of Sunshine. I tried one of their sandwich specials: Caribbean Pork Loin Sandwich. This sucker was crazy tasty! It's slow roasted pork loin that's rubbed with Ancho chili, allspice and black pepper, sliced and marinated in orange juice, cilantro, habanero, green onion, garlic and fresh basil. Grilled and piled on baguette with caramelized onions, mayo, lettuce and cilantro. Served with a side salad with honey mustard/chipotle dressing. It's a little pricey at $13.75, but it's worth it! Came here for drinks on a Friday night. The bars on the strip were mostly busy because there was a game going on,but there was room for 3 here. We helped ourselves to the seat. Atmosphere: lively bar scene. Food: we only got a few nibbles including garlic bread and artichoke hummus pita plate. The Garlic Bread was what you'd expect. The Pita Plate came with vegetables aside from the main artichoke dip, which I enjoyed. I had a margarita cocktail that came in a big glass. Service: the person taking the order was nice in coming by our area and checking on us, especially since we weren't sure what we wanted and ordered our items at different times. We came here with a Groupon deal. It's a small restaurant, but it has a neighborhood feel and our waitress was very nice. The special seafood soup was delicious, as was the fresh bread and butter that came with it. We split 2 sandwiches-the salmon and the steak. Both were awesome. The dijon on the salmon sandwich really set it off. The pasta salad was a perfect compliment to the sandwiches. I came here with a Groupon on a Friday night. It was pretty packed with a good atmosphere and a lot of neighborhood locals. The menu is made up of mostly sandwiches and salads along with a few appetizers and entrees. All three in my party got beers and all really enjoyed them. I tried the Pacemaker Porter and thought it was delicious. Two of us got the sandwiches (one went with the Reuben and the other the salmon) and thought they were really good. The Reuben is delicious, plentiful, and came with pasta salad. I had the hot and spicy gumbo and it was indeed hot and spicy. The bowl was filling and delicious but make sure you do like your heat. Our service was friendly and prompt without disturbing us much. It can get loud in the restaurant but not overly so and the kitchen did get smoky and they had to keep opening the doors but it wasn't a problem. I would definitely come back again. read more

This one is hard to write, because the food has gotten so much better over the years, and the service/bar staff has also gotten way better. Even the bathrooms are cleaner. BUT the owner seems to make everyone uncomfortable. I am not sure what is happening at the ale house, but people who were there for years are now gone, and when the owner walks in, the mood seems to shift from fun to dark. I hope things resolve. Well, I found something on the menu here to get me away from my usual gumbo! Had lunch with a friend who ordered a weekly special of Oyster BLT. As I savored my gumbo, she raved about this sandwich. I couldn't stand it, so the next night I took my husband there, and we both ordered it. Whoever came up with the idea of an oyster BLT should get a bonus! The flavors of the oysters with bacon and the chipotle mayo they put on it were spectacular! Add the freshness and crunchiness of lettuce and tomatoes, and it was a great sandwich! In fact, we enjoyed it so much that we went back 2 days later for lunch to have it once more before the week was up. A great neighborhood pub, with a really good steak sandwich. Sadly, they've discontinued their grilled ahi sandwich (I'm told the tuna was getting to pricey). The fish tacos and reuben are good too, and they have a good selection of beers. The stews and soups come with various names, but pretty much all taste the same - some folks like them, some don't (I'm not a fan). Sandwiches are served with potato chips (Tim's?) or tabouleh. We aren't big drinkers so we passed on the beer. However, we both tried weekly specials. I got the bangkok chicken salad and he got the beef pot pie. The salad sauce was surprisingly really tasty. It was somewhat sweet, like the peanut sauce they use in Thai places. They sprinked wonton skins and peanuts all over the salad. Unfortunately they used plain iceberg lettuce for the salad, and I would have prefered romaine or mesclun... since the salad regular price was $14! The pot pie was okay. They should have mixed the contents of the pot pie or something, because the top layer did not have that much flavor! The bottom was very rich and tasty. The pot pie is pretty smal though and served with a giant salad. The server was pretty friendly and had no issues with the Groupon. I'll come back again sometime to try other foods. read more

We were out and about with friends on a Saturday in the Queene Anne Neighborhood and wanted to have a beer and snack and we stumbled upon the hilltop Ale house after looking on Yelp. When enterring, I felt as if I was going into a pub in England. People playing cards, nice people behind the bar who greeted us as we came in and a great atmosphere. Beer selections were awesome, with 4 rotating winter ales available. As a vegetarian, the hummus plate was execellent. She went straight to her plate of food at the bar and started eating. I finally got up and grabbed another waitress who simply walked over to the girl eating her food and pointed at me. That girl then proceeded to roll her eyes at me, put down her fork and walk over to us. I asked for the bill, and left. Never EVER GOING BACK. This place has remained one of my favorite spots in Seattle for years now. My love started with the boneless jerk chicken strips and the Caesar salad. I love chicken strips and these ones are SO good. In recent months I'm also a huge fan of the baked goat cheese salad (if ordering takeout--get the dressing on the side for optimal experience! So good) They also have great soup and sandwiches too... I have yet to try anything that isn't wonderful from this place. The atmosphere inside is also super comforting too and it's a perfect spot to grab a beer with dinner. During the COVID restrictions I've placed takeout orders over the phone and this restaurant has my order ready by the time I get there (10 minutes or less). I went to Hilltop to watch the game with a friend and they were closed for their holiday party, which is fine. The party hadn't started and the people inside were just sitting on chairs so I knocked on the door, hoping to ask for a suggestion for another place to go. 4 different people looked at me and refused to come to the door. 2 people looked at me, got up and walked out of sight. An older lady just kept staring at me while I was in the rain knocking. Finally, someone came over, but wouldn't open the door and told me from the inside she doesn't know the area to get me to leave. Hmmm... As a person of color, I wouldn't be surprised if they felt I was going to do something (even though there were like 10 people inside). For whatever reason, they decided to treat someone who simply asked for a suggestion of where else to go like a criminal. I ended up at Paragon, just 2 doors down, which turned out great. Walked into this place and literally stood at the front for 5mins, just waiting and not one person acknowledged my presence. No sign saying seat yourself or anything. Finally I walked to the back kitchen area and asked the bartender who'd I caught eyes with multiple times to ask if it was open seating. He looks away and says "ya find something".
