When my 11 year old Grandson comes from Brooklyn he doesn't want to go to the Beach. He wants to…read morego to the pool at the Rec Center. He loves it. That says it all about the pool. A wonderful benefit of my Medicare Supplemental plan is free access to lots of gyms, including the Rec Centers. So I get free cards without having to pay the city resident's annual fee. Recently my use has been limited to watching from the bleachers while my son & grandson swim. Also I love early voting at the Rec Center. In my earlier pre knee replacement days & before retiring I would walk to the Rec Center to both swim & use the machines in the work out room. The pool is great for water walking & other non impact exercises that I learned in a pre knee surgery physical therapy program at another facility. The machines in the weight room were also knee strengthening learned from previous Physical Therapy. Because of the swim teams & classes offered I learned the best time for the pool was when the Rec Center first opened for the day. There were always tons of people waiting for the door to open. The crowd mainly consisted of seniors who would go to the pool every day or do gym walking decked out in fashionable sweatsuits, probably widows or widowers trying to attract a new spouse. The Senior crew that chose the pool didn't interfere with any of my exercises. There was a group who spent their time in a circle treading water & gossiping. Since I knew a few I was invited to join, which I did from time to time. Those sessions provided me with all the scoop on everything happening In Bayside at the time. The crowd left when classes began, which gave me time to get home & ready for work. The weight room is well stocked with equipment on which one had to do a short training session before using. The early crowd there consisted of buff guys who wanted to work out before work. The Rec Center consists of much, much more. There are a plethora of classes ranging from Crafting to Yoga & Pilates, which I really should take advantage of. Workout groups are offered. There is a racquet ball court that seems very popular. Adjacent is a disc golf center. The very large indoor pool offers an open area, swimming lanes, diving section & much, much more. I wish it had built when my son was young & was on a nearby Bayside neighborhood swim team. The bleachers & lounging area outside the pool window wall offer a great view for parents to watch. It's such a wonderful facility to be in the neighborhood. Thank you Virginia Parks & Recreation.

He now swims year around at the Princess Anne Y and I find myself back at Trashmore today which seems odd. Tide Swimming continues to use this location for age-group swimmers. The Trashmore YMCA could be the oldest at the Beach. It most certainly is the most central. Located off I-264 and I'm sure you pass it often and wonder how to access. There are two entry points off Independence. Southern and Edwin both take you into the Y. Parking is typically adequate, but usually full in front. The only way to enter is the front. The parking lot and walk up often has debris like it did today. This Y features an indoor and outdoor pool which is my primary reason for coming with my son who is a club swimmer. The 6 lane 25 meter indoor is old and rough, but they keep the water clean. Maintenance is an issue. A lot of rust can be seen including an overhead roof access that's a rusty mess. There is spectator seating to watch lessons. I believe all lessons are conducted in this pool. A small youth locker room off deck as well as an adult locker room. In the past they have been challenged on cleanliness. The outdoor 8 lane 25 yard recreation pool also has a small adjacent water park only used in warm months. This is the pool that my son would mainly practice in. It's in great shape and swim is year around when bubbled in the Fall and removed in Spring. There are no restrooms off deck. Other programming I'm familiar with is Spin and Yoga, but they have much more. Cardio and weight rooms are divided. The Trashmore Y has several classrooms that are used for programming. One of the most popular features of the center is childcare. The final aspect of my write up highlights staff that I have encountered over three years. This includes front desk check-in and aquatics. I have been very pleased with their professionalism, friendliness and helpfulness. Lots of examples of going above and beyond for our family. I think a 3.5 suits them, but rounding down due to aging of the building and maintenance.

The last time I went in and asked for a mop, that I was willing to use myself, the staff member at the counter was extremely rude, and acted like I was bothering him, even though he was just sitting there on his phone not doing anything. He would not help me at all and just dismissed me. I don't know what kept me so calm. I only joined the Y for pickle ball, and lately I'm wondering if it is worth the monthly fee. I do have fun when I play there with the other members. Here's to hoping things pick up.

That said, it wasn't my kids' favorite. My kids are elementary school aged, and they've been spoiled by going to 6ish different camps over the summer. Who knows if it's because they didn't know the other kids in this program, but the feedback they gave me was that they did a lot of waiting. They claim that the only things they did in their 6 hours there were eat breakfast, go to the playground, eat lunch, and work on a salt dough sculpture. My daughter said the only time she touched a writing utensil was when she used a marker to roll the salt dough sculpture flat. Take it with a grain of salt, because they're kids, but that was their perspective. I did like that breakfast, lunch and a snack is included in the day's program. My kids ate something they described as a waffle for breakfast, and they ate chicken nuggets, sweet potato, and apple for lunch.

Both of our sons attended the school for a couple years each. Our boys are very different in personality and learning styles. The Barefoot team provided custom teaching styles to fit each of their unique needs. One of our boys is hard of hearing. he required help with his hearing devices, had regular speech therapy at the school, and was expressing his needs with sign language. The Barefoot staff was fully supportive and made every accommodation requested. Their team is always VERY responsive and proactive. It was truly sad to see our boys move on to other schools.

It is downtown, so finding parking can be horrendous unless you pay an extra $10 mo to park in their garage. I had to park very far away to take the 6 pm bellydance class on Monday and I didn't feel safe walking alone to my car. So, I may have to pay that fee just to be closer to the building. Other than that, I haven't experienced any negatives.

My daughter has now been attending Strelitz for over a year. She started at around 8 months old…read more(as a little bub) and is now 20 months old in an early years/toddler program. She is thriving. They are teaching her so much! She is loving playing, singing, reading, and running around. She has learned to sit at a table, clean up after herself, say words and sign "more" and "eat". I'm so impressed. They send us weekly newsletters with tons and tons of photos and there is an app for parent updates and so we can interact with teachers throughout the day. They are very responsive. There is also a nurse on staff at all times and the administration (Elyssa and Natalie) are also very responsive and attentive, knowing every single child's name in the halls (I am impressed). The staff for the babies and toddlers are wonderful, loving and caring people. Bianca, Janae, Raven and Marisol as well as now Jaime and Sydnee are all stellar and I am happy to have my baby girl in a location with such attentive and caring people. They are always coming up with creative crafts and fun, letting the children explore with their senses, and teaching them to be kind and caring individuals. My daughter is happy about coming here every day and that is all I need to know. My parents and her other grandparent attended their grandparents day together around the Thanksgiving holiday and were super impressed with the school as well as the teachers. There was a welcome reception and then activity in the rooms where the grandparents got to see their spaces and do crafts with them. They had made each grandparent a thoughtful, personalize gift with photos to keep and my daughter's grandparents are obsessed. The facility, as mentioned before, is wonderful. It's a large building with secured entry and security who take their jobs very seriously - they have everyone scan in (and a photo shows up) and if you don't have your fob you must show ID and be on a list. I know this bc once my husband used my fob and they hunted him down bc his picture wasn't mine. LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. The school is K-5th grade and they take babies as old as weeks to care for. A wonderful, wonderful establishment. Well-run and the best I've seen throughout the area. I could not be happier that my baby girl is here.

All I'm going to say is I'm zoned for one of the best public elementary schools in the area and continue to keep my kid in this school. They actually TEACH my kid. Not just plop them in front of a computer. Worth every cent!
